- The Subaru WRX and the Hyundai Elantra N go head-to-head in the latest video in our U-Drag series. In this drag race video, Ryan ZumMallen from Edmunds heads back to the track with the two brand-new performance cars: the 2022 WRX and the 2022 Elantra N. Which of these performance sedans has the quickest drag race time and the most horsepower? Is the WRX's top speed higher than the Elantra N's? Ryan covers all of these questions and more in the third video in our new series we dubbed "U-Drags." It's the 2022 Subaru WRX vs. 2022 Hyundai Elantra N.
What is a U-Drag race?
A U-Drag race consists of both cars heading down the track like a standard drag race, then braking hard, flipping around and then heading back.

I own a 2017 wrx. Not surprised the hyundai caught it on the big end
Do dct versus civic type r or vw gti or golf r.
Yall should try testing with someone who can actually drive that WRX. This was embarrassing for y'all
I knew it. My tuned 18 Elantra Sport 7DCT beat my friends 11 STI with 320WHP on a roll from 30MPh to 1xxMPH by 1.5-2 cars…
@@the_slow_sti Well, the fastest time on both cars was the same driver and the N was still faster.
Imagine if every other car manufacturer evolved as Hyundai and Kia did over the past decade.
Now they are gunna try to play catch up and fail miserably. Hopefully Hyundai doesn't become stale and boring after they take their throne.
Do you think you can beat the Elantra N with your accord 2.0T ?? love ur channel btw
That’s not saying much considering Hyundais and Kia’s are still huge piles of shit.
@@goybi7356 C’mon man. Everybody knows there is no worse pile of shit than BMW. Nobody is as bad as expensive euro trash.

This U drag race may be the new thing! This is such a cool race!
It really does make a difference because handling matters just as much and sometimes even more than straight line power.
Agreed I really enjoy it.
Me too! What an awesome way to test a car’s performance...any other day this could have been a close one just comparing straight line performance. To me a well rounded car is the better choice
Hyundai and KIA are still selling cars in russia.

As a subaru fanboy, I'm very impressed by the Elantra N. Kudos to Hyundai for making a rad car!
as a fan boy myself, subaru has been shooting themselves in the foot for the past couple years. Completely new designs but the engineering has really become quite mediocre
Hyundai definitely benefited from the guy that came over from BMW. I'm a Ford guy but I'm getting my elantra N in a month. First ever non Ford I will have owned

@George-qw8ss how's the EN after a year of ownership?
This video showcased how the driver makes all the difference. He roasted the N off the line in the WRX. And then he roasted the WRX off the line in the N with only FWD.
Well…the N still won even with that heinous start so case closed lmao
But the driver didn’t make the difference…the Elantra destroyed in both races lol
I feel like both the drivers kinda botched it. I launch my '17 WRX premium way better than those two.
@@jacobdicicco2044 yes but the N won by a MUCH larger margin in the second race. And in the first race the WRX flew past the Elantra at launch. Second race, FWD N stayed right with it. And murdered the WRX buy a huge and much larger margin than in the first race. Just showcasing that even though the N is a far superior driver's car, the driver also makes a difference, even if the N will take it every time. Planning on getting one myself soon as I sell my mk7 R

I had decided last year I wanted to get a WRX, until I saw the new version and started really researching the best option for a manual compact sport sedan. I took delivery of an Elantra N two days ago. I'm glad this test didn't go the other way.

You're right about the Elantra's steering. It feels amazing. I'm thrilled every time I get to drive this car.
Can you describe it more for those of us who aren't as lucky to drive it
Any issues yet? I want one but all of Hyundai’s recent issues has me steering towards the SI.
@@ROBMACDUI What issues? Hyundai has been killing it.
@@ROBMACDUI It's been rock solid.
@@motormusique -LOOKS: It is staggering how much better this car looks in person. I'm not entirely sure why it doesn't photograph that well, but in person it makes an impression even just sitting there. It's aggressive without being overly showy. All the salesmen were drooling over it, and before I arrived, they turned down a few customers wanting to test drive it since I already had a deposit down.
-INTERIOR: Sit in the driver's seat and it's obvious that this is a driver's car. The entire cockpit is oriented on you as the driver, everything in very convenient reach, and it feels like the entire thing is hugging you and holding you in. Very aggressive bolsters on the seats, which work great for keeping you secure in the twists. I'm a big guy and still found it comfortable. The infotainment is very responsive and intuitive, and there are so many options to explore and play with. Even the little things like the light-up seats and the changeable ambient lighting are fun and contribute to the whole feel of sitting in the car. Everything feels quality, too, nothing loose or rattling.
-DRIVING: Of course, this is where the car really proves itself. Even Eco mode feels nice and is perfectly comfortable and capable on the highway. Then, with every successive driving mode you feel the car come alive a little more, until you hit N mode and it just wants to GO. You can feel the car wanting to speed up, and in the turns it actively claws at the ground to pull you out of corners. Even just highway driving, you can easily find yourself cruising 20MPH faster than you thought you were. This car feels absolutely rock solid and it responds to whatever you ask for, going exactly where you ask it to go with speed and precision. It actually reminds me of driving a little-brother version of my buddy's M3, which I guess isn't a surprise given the pedigree behind N design. If there were no badges, you could easily believe this is a German car. I'm also baffled by certain reviews that say the suspension is too stiff and gets uncomfortable, as I found it the perfect balance of comfort and connection to the road. I took my 65-year-old mother for a drive and unprompted she actually commented how good it felt.
ODDITIES: The cupholders are a bit weird. Center armrest storage space could be bigger. Seat adjustor bar is a bit hard to reach. So far, just minor little things that don't ultimately matter that much.
OVERALL: It's as good as they say it is.
I work at a Hyundai dealership and we got one in and my co worker bought it right away and I was absolutely shocked at how Hyundais n division made a regular old Elantra into a fun powerful sports sedan. Also we got a Kona N in and that made me realize that Hyundai wasn’t screwing around with these cars but I was also overly impressed with how quick but very practical it was.
Hyundai was screwing around for the last ten years, so they could sit back and do what they do best: wait for all the others to invent and design everything, then reverse-engineer their way to success. They don't get credit for creating a true driver's machine. They get credit for monkey see, monkey do. They should change it to be the 'M' line.
It's not a old Elantra. It's a new platform
Bro I’m about to buy one too, it’s nice we get a discount too
@@thesorrow619 Good luck with any major warranty claims. Both available transmissions were developed in-house by Hyundai. You won't notice many shortcomings, so long as you plan to drive it like a grandpa. But when problems start to develop that they are unable to cure in two or fewer service visits, they will simply brush you off. They replaced two major components of my drive train on my vehicle (their 6-speed manual crap box and the propeller shaft) that had fewer than 4,500 miles on it. I bought it brand-new. Their favorite phrase is "Working to design and intent" when the ugly flaws reveal themselves. That's how I was treated. Even after I engaged the help from the consumer defender from Channel Two in Houston, Hyundai stood by their remarks. Despite having assessments from ASE Certified mechanics to back it all up, Hyundai North America completely ignored the evidence and refused to service my car under warranty any further for the issues I was having. There were others with similar experiences. So go ahead and grab one of those cars. They'll be changing the body style so radically in two model years, that you'll get to experience the feeling of owning the 'previous generation' model very quickly.
@@7t7o7 well I’m a Hyundai tech, so If I need to make a warranty claim, I’ll make sure I get it. and i ordered the manual transmission instead of their shitty automatic dual clutch so I’ll last longer
I have a Veloster N DCT, I know everyone loves a manual but the dual clutch in these N models are absolutely insane. I absolutely love them. Highly highly recommend hyundai N
DCT is faster and more fuel efficient. Which I would personally take over manual feel. That and no chance of money shifting haha
@@TheRealCatof I can verify. You cannot force it to shift to 1st lol
Kind of like the GTI’s/Golf R. These cars are meant to be fun DAILY’s, and they will never be sports cars or weekend toys, so I think the superior autos are actually better for the cars’ purposes. My Camaro on the other hand, I would never get in auto lol (it actually didn’t even have an option for auto)
@@shiberino8413 i dont know, when looking into Hyundai's N models, they actually want these cars to be played with. I looked through warrenties and asked around. They actually cover damages to internals such as the engine, transmission, dual clutch, etc if you take them to the track or "street race" lol
@@shiberino8413 I even heard about one instance where a guy had a manual Veloster N and money shifted it on the highway and they fully warrentied the replacement of his engine and transmission.

FINALLY, I'm seeing some "Elantra N versus _____" videos... I want more of these! I think it's pretty exciting that Hyundai has entered the scene that's normally dominated by Subaru, Volkswagen, and Honda. More compare/contrast stuff that includes the Elantra N, please!
Love the new testing/video format! Much better than just a drag race. Kudos!
Please keep doing these videos, this was entertaining and informative.
Subaru's problem is that they've been standing still for too long and Hyundai not only caught up, but beat them
Not just Subaru most JDM brands are slow. But ya Subaru needs a push.
A Subaru on pavement is Michael Jordan playing baseball. Good on Hyundai for making a quick nimble car though
Now THAT was a great comparison for everyday drivers!!! Learned some new stuff with that one.
I agree, the Elantra N has great steering especially on curves, I own the same blue color, the car is fast.
Recently got one as well and damn turning corners give me so much confidence
I have the VN and scared the shit out of my buddy the first corner and I wasn't even pushing
Legit contemplating the switch up after owning a stinger. That n line spec really hits the sweet spot for daily and performance.
I'd be pretty upset to lose to a Hyundai, but the N is legit. That what Subaru gets for just minor improvements over the years, while other companies push it.
A subaru on pavement is Michael Jordan playing baseball. Too many have been made a pavement Princess though, why people expect them to hang in these sorts of tests
Very interesting and innovative addition to the common RUclips drag race format. Especially appreciate how you are including some more 'normal' cars.
Knew the Elantra N would slay. U-Drag is brilliant & should become a standard. Btw, 62 - 124 mph measurement is very informative, just saying...
its brilliant but inconsistent. The WRX driver looked like he thought the race was over after the drag race but then remembered it was a u-turn race. You can tell since he slowed down. Regardless, the Elantra definitely has the better steering, but in a drag race , the AWD from the WRX would win it the drag race.
@@georgehugeabutt9947 no, is hasnt better steering. it just hard and synthetic

I’m always excited for these videos!
Love the Elantra N. Would love to see it go against the new GR86 in a not so traditional matchup
Or MIATA
I still think the N would fare well against the GR86. Torque curve was vastly improved on the GR86 but the 86 was never about power. N is basically a muscle car compared to the GR86.
Elantra N would shred the GR86 in a drag context, even with the turn. There's just too much of a power difference (at least the 86 won't have the WRX's boost lag, hahaha)
That said, would be great to compare the handling as the 86 is amazing in that dept.
(coming from a Subaru-bleeding happy BRZ owner)
The GR86 probably dances better but the N destroys it where power matters.
장담합니다. Miata와 GR86은 Elantra N을 절대로 못 이깁니다. 적어도 Type R 수동변속기, GR Yaris 수동변속기 정도돼야 비슷할 겁니다.
First time watcher, great video format. Well done. Subscribed. Oh also THANK YOU FOR TIME STAMPS
Not just quick stock, the new turbo inlet on the N's makes easy 340 of a map and pretty easy 390 to 400 with supporting mods and stage 2 map! Add a dct to the N and that scobby needs a good 450bhp to stand a chance and even then I feel the dct would make the difference. Things have changed a lot in the last decade!! As a Scooby owner for many years I'd never ever believed all this if you'd told me this just a few years back! Seriously considering an i30N here in the UK. Great vid btw, best drag format around currently.
Honestly I’ve known about edmunds for 15ish years and have never gone to the site or thought about it. But this format of testing has sold me on your channel haha. It is informative, fun and makes me want to have local drag strips try and implement this if possible because I want to race this locally.
Please keep up this series, new cars are awesome but for some longevity and nostalgia please try and find classic rivals of the 90s and 2000s to do this race in both stock and modded versions if possible!
This sold you? The wrx had a killed launch the first run but the second time got beat off the launch. That should not happen. The wrx should win the launch against the elantra every single time without a question. It has way more traction.
Hyundai is killing it these days and Subaru is just getting killed. Hyundai is doing everything right with the N line and they are on my short list to replace our 2014 WRX. I don't know WTF Subaru is thinking. The 2022 WRX was a total let down on performance and looks. Some of the choices they made (you can only get the adjustable suspension and nice seats on a CVT???) are just insane. "Don't worry, just wait for the STi...." Lol. How did that work out?
subaru is dead as a car brand for enthutiast
STI is dead and N is coming up... Wow
Subaru left quality & durability years ago.
As a subaru fan, this is indeed pathetic. The 2022 WRX is a joke. Even when the 15+ WRX’s came out, you could tell it was on its last legs.
STI is dead
WRX murdered by Subaru

Well this just completely validates my purchase of a new Elantra N (called Sedan N here in Australia). I’ve always been a Subie fan and owned 2 Subarus over the years. I’ve always driven manuals but I just bought the Sedan N in auto and I couldn’t be happier! The Rexy has a cult following but Subaru didn’t do enough to get my business on this occasion. Bought a '02 WRX wagon new and kept it 17 years. Dropped the clutch two times. Once in heavy rain just to see what it would do. Second time, pulling out on a blind corner only to discover a car was coming. REALLY, wanted the new WRX to be my new car. Can't get passed the plastic cladding & 3 hp increase. I have a 2014 WRX (my first ever) and overall it’s a fun car, but I wouldn’t call it fast. It’s punchy and on a twisty road a lot of fun, plus I love the look of it. However after thinking about it, I wouldn’t buy another WRX due to the fact they aren’t actually that quick or powerful. Case in point I didn’t realise an i30N has more power than my WRX. It’s quite sad that Subaru don’t seem to want to make more power out of the engine. A modern 4 cylinder sports car should be making at least 300HP now in 2022, com’on Subaru.
Right there with you I’ve had my for 7 months and already had to put a new engine in the car I won’t ever buy other wrx they are money pits think my next option in a civic type R 😈
Damn that sucks you had to put a new engine in! Funny you mention the Type-R, because I had the chance to buy a 2018 Type-R in 2019 for about $48,000AUD but didn’t want to spend that much at the time. Thanks to Covid they are worth about $55,000AUD now. The one that got away.
Subarus are made to be modded. How many car company's do warranty work on catless tuned cars? Subaru does. There are limits to that but they are known for it. Subaru isn't about being fast. It's about becoming fast. Subaru and dodge are the last 2 companies that make cars for real motorheads. Though there will be no sti 2022 model year so this may be an end to a jdm era like the evo a sad day for the manual transmission and boxer engine.
Same here! I have a 2013 hatchback, when i heard they got rid of hatchbacks i was pissed because that is all i like. Then next gens had pathetic power increase. Then i started getting sick of how much gas it consumes especially having to use premium is too much. I am currently looking for other brands.
@@christopherlarose2770 That's the issue. One shouldn't have to modify their car to make it fast, it should be able to compete with other brands out of the box. Modding takes a lot of time and effort which most people don't have. Also here in Australia Hyundai N cars are the ONLY cars that you can take on a race track without voiding the manufacturers warranty.
I love this, please do more! Put it against the civic type r and Golf R.
Hmm as a driver of a WRX sti I believe that the driving style of both drivers are not driving an all wheel drive car as it should be. Chris Atkinson explains how to drive all wheel drive WRXs. When turning into a corner you dont power through the corner in an all wheel drive, you need to let the car cruise through the corner then once your out of the corner thats where you apply more power.
Yea they only wanted to keep boost, but thats not wrx friendly
I have just over 1200 miles on my N. Love it. I have had 3 wrxs and a mustang. By far this is my favorite car. When that boost kicks in it is so much fun. Also round a bouts are so much fun. Insane how that car eats turns. The more gas you give it the faster the inner wheel goes to keep you in the turn.
just a good natured note-- the "outer" wheel gets more torque with the LSD, hence improving the ability of the car to rotate under power...
I'm glad you finally came out of the closet. YAY
Please more U-drags. I could watch these for hours
Great video, you guys picked good cars to go up against each other. You should do a golf R u drag!

You mentioned the equipment was working the 2nd race, so why no performance numbers (0-60, 1/4 mile, cornering G) like previous U-Drags? I love the format, but it is far better, when you give the subjective numbers in addition to the objective driver reviews. Keep up the good work.
Exactly. Gotta love the fact they never had the numbers from the first race, where the guy who could drive blew away the Elantra in the 1/4 mile
Agreed with your point, though i think you meant "objective numbers/subjective review"

I have a hold down on a cyber grey Elentra N with 6MT. Delivery mid to late May in North Carolina. So pumped for my first new car at 26.
Awesome format and ...... as I said, awesome
in the second run the WRX didn't "struggle" to get going; the driver struggled to launch it well. I'm not trying to make excuses for the car, a loss is a loss, and I think the N really is better overall. But lets be real here lol, the WRX should ALWAYS win off the line in this match up
Yea the Elantra N didn't get an amazing launch, its the WRX that had a poor launch in the second race
The Hyundai N models have redefined front wheel drive performance cars. Good review and great drag concept guys!
The CTR does it already and is better at it.
But the Elantra N makes it more attainable and exciting
Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
Maybe in the US, in Europe front drive performance has been strong for decades
Great videos, loving this style. For awd, don't just dump the cluch, slip it. Its faster and not abusive on the car.
Love U-Drags!!!
The Elantra N with a DCT and launch control probably would have won off the line too in the first race.
yup has more power than the manual version 290 "wheel"! hp! 🥵
Your right dct would. Shit stomped this wrx. I got dct version and. Gapped a wrx on hwy. wish I was recording it. And I had full tank gas and 2 passengers lol
And that boys and girls is the reason why there is no STI.

Very satisfying car test !!
I love U-drags!
The N has more torque, around the same horsepower and it weighs around 200lbs less than the WRX, not surprised actually, but impressed.
That 200lbs. Doesn’t matter I got the dct version I was on hwy had full tank gas and 2 passengers. In my car. Went from 60 mph to 140. And I gapped a newer wrx. Bus lengths. This car is impressive I can’t complain. Or find one thing I don’t like about the car I’m just blown away specially from a damn Hyundai.
@@Mmb0927 I think it's the 3rd time you talk about the "full tank of gas and 2 passengers"...we know ! Thanks. (just pulling your leg...don't get mad !) LOL

This is a really novel drag layout. Surprised this wasn't thought of sooner, or more popular. Hopefully others will take "inspiration" from this. These races shows a lot about the car, then just a quarter mile down some stretch of road.

I always see everyone turning on Sport Mode or Performance Mode for all the other cars when comparing them to a WRX but I never see anyone put the WRX into Trac Mode by pressing and holding the traction control down for a few seconds. This is supposed to help with the power distribution to the wheels because it locks the differential and doesn't cut power. I'm just curious why no one does this for any of these tests against a WRX?
You're thinking auto box subarus
@@anthonyi2221 nope my manual wrx has the same traction control off button
Yes I understand that, I also have a manual WRX but you're not understanding is turning off tracking control does not affect the power on the manual boxes... You actually don't even understand your own car.. the differential does not lock. It's an open diff on the WRX. Traction control is controlled with the rear brakes.. open differential is in the middle.. only the STI has locking differentials
@@anthonyi2221 not faster as in more hp, as in it doesn’t cut power due to wheel slip
That's embarrassing for a wrx to lose to a Hyundai the funny thing is that im a owner of a 2018 wrx
I find this U-Drag helpful in helping me decide on which car I want.
