I love how in the last couple of Criterion Closet videos they actually show everything the people say, and don't cut out a bunch of their commentary, and film picks.
he's so effortlessly charismatic
Y Tu Mama Tambien was one of the most beautiful film experiences I’ve ever had. Awesome to see him here.
you must've seen like 12 films in that case
@@FSVR54 several thousand, but thanks for the comment 🙂
Yeah same here, still one of my favorites
an immediate favorite
It's strange actually.... I associate him so strongly with that film, and love his character so much I got weirdly emotional when this started seeing him all grown up!
I like what he said (in reference to Blow Up) about how people had more time to get involved in unexpected situations prior to the age of the cell phone and social media. So true. An actor whose work I have consistently enjoyed, a great selection of films and oral history, thank you!
Sigh. Saying things like that is a sign that one is getting old. Well, it happens to all of it. But yes, I very much enjoyed seeing him here.
4:45 is an all-time great criterion closet moment...
He’s right too, Y tu mamá también would be canceled nowadays
@@tonym6566nah ngl some art house directors would have the balls to make it. It's was very controversial when it released as well
You are absolutely right!
Um, it still exists and nobody is trying to keep from you seeing it.
Are all of your opinions so stupid and predictable and unoriginal?
@@tonym6566 Why does everyone always say such-and-such movie would be “canceled nowadays”?
When “Y tu mamá también” was initially released in the US, it went unrated in order to avoid being essentially “canceled” with an NC-17 rating. Roger Ebert criticized the puritanical nature of the ratings system at the time that forced the director to retreat to Mexico.
If the movie came out today, you’d have a bunch of people whining that it was “woke” because it featured POC actors and accusing it of “grooming” because it had two straight guys becoming gay for each other.
My son is named Gael in honor to this great actor and human being. Gracias por tu arte crack.
I was an extra on Rosewater and I wanted to ask GGB what genre Y Tu Mama Tambien it was and he said "whatever you want it to be". Super cool dude. Went and saw Mala Educacion the next day
Que bien como pronuncias el English.... le aporto ese gustico por el dolar, y ese grito como al final de la cinta que se confunde con lo cheyene.....No country old Men de los Hnos Cohen....
Love Gael. Criterion needs to include Motorcycle Diaries and the Science of Sleep. He's amazing in both films.
fr! and No (2012) pls
Yes!!! Both of those films are amazinggggg
NO and Neruda are Aweeeeeesome!
Agree. I would add No and Babel as well.
Seven minutes in heaven in the closet with Gael.
Hmmmmm.......
So which film made you horny. ?
Well said, do you have a similar collection yourself?
Crazy to see him older. Time passes but we are forever young on film.
Silver hair looks gorgeous on him though.
Still handsome.
Ageist much

Such a refreshing personality and great smile.
I just watched Y Tu Mama Tabien for the first time an hour ago and it blew me away, I gave it a 9 then went back and gave it a 10. At first glance it looks like a sex comedy, but instead turns out to this profound examination on life, sex and friendships I have ever seen. A Masterpiece.
Gael for me is Amores Perros and Science of sleep, guy has a very interesting filmography (Larrain, Innaritu, Almodovar, Gondry...big wow)
Thank you Gael and please criterio we need more BUÑUEL please!!!!! Los Olvidados should’ve happened long ago please 🙏🏻
yeah Mexican collection when
100% agreed!!!
This man is a true artist. Much respect from Brasil. Hasta la vitoria
I’m glad he mentioned the erotic thing. There needs to be more sexy films again. Such a huge part of cinema has been lost when they stopped making them. Thanks to a few that are still doing it , crimes of the future, piaf, and a few french ones but the rest need get back on board.
The only reason you watch films
@@shiven513You deluded little person.
Problem is polling data shows the younger generations, despite being a very thirsty bunch, don't want sexy films. They look at sex with suspicion & reflexive fear of abusive productions. It'll probably be another 15 years before someone makes the "breakthrough" erotic film that then starts a wave of rip-offs and imitations that produces yet another generational anti-sexy movement.
Yes, absolutely. Of course there's always some examples we can point to, but generally the real artistic efforts which are dangerously shaking status quo, challenging audiences with ambiguity, uncomfortable situations & gritty aesthetic are fewer & fewer.
As a film student, the last thing I want to choreograph and direct is a sex scene. Unless it's something like Boogie Nights, where sex is crucial to the story being told, sex scenes are unnecessary, exploitative, and gross from a production standpoint.
Just watched Memorias del Subdesarrollo this afternoon... incredible movie, and happy to see Gael mention it
Alain Delon was great as Tom Ripley in Purple Noon. Good pick by Gael!
And a great blue and white "on the water" shirt.
Amazing film... one of my 2023 purchases, along with Delon's Mr. Klein & La Piscine.
@@Jimmy1982Playlists Yeah, amazing movies. Although I gotta say, Delon in Le Samourai is really something else.
Protect this man... from his kids

Wow, Gael has so much to say. A terrific Criterion guest.
Picking Closet Picks you appeared in would normally be viewed as narcissistic, but with the lovely Gael García Bernal, it's endearing. Free pass.
❤ agree
For real, and those are GREAT films.
I know he's interesting and intelligent and whatever else, but my god he's still just so hot
Just rewatched the motorcycle diaries for the first time in 20 years. God damn it holds up
Amores Perros!😍I just knew he was about to pick that. Still one of my all-time favourite films and the only film i have ever watched first at night and then woken up the next morning and had to rewatch again. Just astonishing. And Gael... always so charming🥰
Y Tu Mamá También.
That movie was AMAZING! Fully recommend, what a gorgeous movie.
Yay Blow-up and Luis Buñuel!! We're thriving 😄
This guy is so refreshing in his wisdom
I remember him since his first and only telenovela we were children back then and grew up with his movies. It's nostalgic now we have grey hair. I'm very proud of Gael for moving up to movies I known I will be watching him win an Oscar sooner or later for sure.
"Hello I an Gael Garcia Bernal and I'm in the closet" should be a MEME
Hahahahah, are you referecing Y tu mama tambien?
Bring Luis Buñuel’s Los Olvidados to the collection! It’s much needed!
Que bien como pronuncias el English.... le aporto ese gustico por el dolar, y ese grito como al final de la cinta que se confunde con lo cheyene.....No country old Men de los Hnos Cohen....98'9
Gael is NOW looking like a professor of films. Like his accent come out on films he adores. Blowout, was a great film to watch back then with such character depth.
Can't believe the Criterion team handed him just the French Buñuel collection! He deserves the Exterminating Angel too and a whole new Spanish language Buñuel boxset
lovely episode, I love gael garcia bernal! I've been following him since I first saw the motorcycle diaries
All great picks, of course... love to see the admiration for Buñuel & Carriere! Carriere's work with Pierre Etaix is brilliant, as well.

Mexican Legend… deserves mas vistas por favor!!!
I'm with you on the original film title. If the language of origin title sounds better, stick with it. "And Your Mother Too!" doesn't roll off the tongue as well.
Oh wow I thought we were gonna wait months for this TYSM ❤ Motorcycle Diaries on criterion when 👀
Yup, I'd be in for that! Also, when the heck're they gonna release The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and her Lover?? That film deserves the CC treatment more than any other film I can think of!
Nice to see some Buñuel love. I support this pick.
I am really hoping to see a nice Buñuel box set in the near future and that it'll contain his more obscure films like The Land Without Bread, El, The Criminal Life of Archibaldo del la Cruz, Mexican Bus Ride, to name just a few. I recently bought the Fellini box set and was blown away by the wealth of bonus material. Buñuel deserves the same treatment.
Land without Bread is incredible!
That would be absolutely incredible, I sincerely hope Criterion creates a Buñuel box set
knew he’s a man of taste!!! drop your letterboxd, gael hahah
Que bien como pronuncias el English.... le aporto ese gustico por el dolar, y ese grito como al final de la cinta que se confunde con lo cheyene.....No country old Men de los Hnos Cohen....98¡2
Loved him in his portrayal of Guevara in Motorcycle Diaries.
I respect Gael Garcia so much more now as an actor and a film lover. How he spoke in reverence of the film directors (including the movies he starred in) speaks volumes of how much he knows about great cinema. Also I'm super surprised he mentioned "Discreet Charm of the Burgeoisie" it's definitely a film to watch to understand society and class given unique dystopian experiences.
So true! The scene in Y Tu Mama Tambien with Gael and Diego (THAT scene), no at 54, still makes me hot as hell.
Nice to see some rarely selected movies instead of the typical movie-guy-picks
Nice to continually see RUclips physical media videos that AREN’T just nerds raving about overblown packaging in front of their collection walls!
Thank you Gael, incredible honour to realise that my films’ collection is embracing your choices! You are an amazing actor and I am so glad that you have mentioned how films used to make you horny and alive with emotion and anticipation. It would be nice to experience all of it again even for the old times sake. Cinema became pristine and dull in a nice way.
i love him so much 💗 y tu mama tambien is top 5 movie for me. i went to a Q&A of his last month he’s so wonderful
“vientos, gracias” te amo gael
¡Órale! 💜Y Tu Mamá Tambien
I remember watching him in "The King". That film is largely forgotten today. It's a shame. It's such a hypnotic and chilling film. What a wonderful guy!
Slept on film, Gael, William Hurt, and Paul Dano are fantastic in it.
It`s actually my favourite performance from him. He is both charismatic and frightening. Truly a wonderful film.
Que bien como pronuncias el English.... le aporto ese gustico por el dolar, y ese grito como al final de la cinta que se confunde con lo cheyene.....No country old Men de los Hnos Cohen....
Lo amo! This calls for a rewatch of all my favorite Gael films ❤
He’s beyond adorable. And a wonderful actor.
Woke up to a new closet vid. Awesome.
Amores Perros is such a great film! Many copied it after its release.
Been following him since the Levis Ad 😅
I love his films.
deep cut 😂

yay! i’ve recently just watched the science of sleep so excited to see gael here
Love Gael! Excellent picks! ❤
The Motorcycle Diaries! Great Movie with Gael
He was great in Station Eleven. Everyone was great in Station11
Finally someone chose memories of underdevelopment! It’s such an underrated classic
Lovely choices, and very rich commentary and insight that feels almost offhanded - a reminder of how many ways cinema intersects w life
Thank you, Gael; I looked at Memories of Underdevelopment after this video and promptly put it on my wish-list; the fate of South- and Central-America interests me greatly!
I love Gael's thoughts on how some movies inspire us to explore and have sex. More movies should.
Nice to know that I'm just as much in crush with him as I ever was!
Love Gael, since Y tu mama ❤

I love how he says horny so casually
Te amo Gael
the loneliest planet is my favorite movie of all time ! was super happy to see this video
yesss his most underseen that should be up there w his other best films (for me)
Y tu mamá también is one of the best movies I've ever seen. Glad to see Gael talking about it so fondly still today :')
I never thought Y Tu Mama Tambien was a teen comedy. It struck me as sophisticated, sexy, and deep.
"Bad Education" LOVE it!!
We love you Gael Garcia
Watched Purple Noon after this. Wow, it's much better than the US version.
love this man. so passionate and knowledgeable and real. yay!
Incredible actor. I wrote a part for him in mind. Awesome selection
Love Bunuel and Antonioni`s Blow up, still believe Amores Perros and Y Tu Mama Tambien are the best films Bernal has made, though he has a fine body of work, especially in collaboration with Pablo Larrain. Wonderful actor, great choices.
Other than Y Tu Mama Tambien, Love by Gaspar Noe. Two of the horniest films IMO ✨
First Gael Garcìa Bernal movie: Motorcycle Diaries
Favorite Gael Bernal movie (so far): The Science of Sleep
The imagination, the Love, the wonder
Love him! ❤Amores Perros 😮excellent choice
It’s really interesting to see Gael Garcia Bernal liking Luis Buñuel’s films. His films are weird but interesting.
What a cool dude. I always love his work.
OMG, and he's smart as a whip too. 😍😍😍
What a gorgeous, sensual man. He only improves with age. ❤
I wish more actors and directors picked their own films too 😊
Please please please get Diego Luna to do closet picks 💜💛💚
Totally! Love Diego, Gael`s great Bro.
Can you pop up titles on the screen as they mention it?
Pls dont. Perfectly fine to have them at the end. You can even take a screenshot a add them to your list and just listen to the closeted one
I’m waiting for Criterion to add The Science Of Sleep to the collection.
My god, he's gone gray! Good selections and good commentary here.
"Before we were enslaved by technology people used to wander and discover things..." Hmm... fancy that.
i love Motorcycke Diaries and the Soundtrack kills
Movie homework! Yay!
Didn’t know Buñuel knew n sang corridos! Hopefully there’s recordings available somewhere
Amores perros è molto bello 👍 ma Y tu mama también è il film più incredibile di tutti quelli che ho visto perché, dopo il dialogo finale, tutto quello che abbiamo visto prima cambia significato ❤
@criterion we need motorcycle diaries!!
yes pleaaase
absolute goat finally
he's so wise guys i can't
Amores perros una obra maestra
Qué tipazo ❤🇲🇽
I like Gael, he's one of those people you see and say "I want him to be my friend"... but it's not worth choosing two movies in which he acted. It's like wasting time to continue getting to know your tastes and cinematographic knowledge.
Finally someone I actually know.
Remember: GGB and Guillermo del Toro comes from the same city: the beautiful Guadalajara (México)
