I was so thrilled when The Daytrippers finally got a proper DVD release a few years ago, that entire cast is wonderful (yes, I have always been a massive fan of Parker Posey as well, but the late great Anne Meara gives such a towering performance of both comedy and drama in that too).

I actually watched 'Weekend' just the other day and Dan is right. It is in its own small way a remarkable film. The director Andrew Haigh's new film 'All of us strangers' has just come out and I'm now very excited to see it.

    • @mostynf

His film 45 Years is also amazing. It’s centred around an old, long term married heterosexual couple, so in some ways the opposite to the two gay men of Weekend who have only just met, but both done incredibly sensitively. Nothing over the top and very real and believable characters. Haigh is a very talented director!

I wrote down the ones on Dan Levy's closet list that I've not seen because I fully appreciated that first pick, which is one of my favorites. Yes, I surprise friends when I admonish them for not seeing Moonstruck or Pretty Woman, but both have dialogue I enjoy immensely. My own recommendation? GODZILLA MINUS ONE, the first Godzilla film I ever watched. Thankfully I was gifted a full year of Criterion Channel on my birthday last month -- BEST GIFT EVER!!! -- so I took the time to see the original Godzilla and then returned to the local AMC to watch Minus One again. Verdict? Even better the second time, and the non-Godzilla-fan with me was impressed -- and he cried 3x, too, on the same parts that got me during both viewings. THANK YOU, CRITERION, both for these marvelous moments in the closet and your channel, which I now recommend to everyone. PS: Please roll out a referral program so we can spread the word and both parties are incentivized...hmm, not sure that's a real word, but you get the idea. A free month for them, a free set of 4x6 postcards for us -- DVD covers from your collection -- which can be sent in a basic envelope via USPS for the cost of a first-class stamp. Just throwing out ideas, hope others chime in below!

Which perhaps happens to us when we get older (anybody else over 50 think this also?). I remember years back living in NYC would always be at an art house cinema just thinking 'enlighten me'. Speaking of non-family-friendly movies.........My friend Duane, who was around 50 years old at the time, was hosting a visit by his parents. They were in their 70's. They were at the Blockbuster and he saw a movie that looked like it might be appropriate for them all to watch. A while into the film, things started to happen that were making everyone a bit nervous. These were Swedes. His parents were people who would make Surströmming every year at the holidays. So, they're watching this movie, and things become very uncomfortable for Duane. But his parents are being extremely polite, and continue to watch.
The film was David Lynch's "Blue Velvet."

The Piano Teacher story reminds me of the time I was at a Blockbuster (remember those?), and being honest, I was a bit tipsy 😇 and I recommended some old horror movie, I can’t remember what movie on the account of being drunk… I mean tipsy. But this movie had just been remade at the time, so I just had to recommend the original to a middle aged woman and, I assume, her teenage daughter who were just trying to find the remake and be on their way. If you’re reading this ladies, I apologize for my drunken, snobbish recommendation, although I do hope you ended up watching the original version of whatever the movie was at some point! As for Dan’s picks, I’m actually kinda shocked he hadn’t seen Kagemusha at that point. One of my favorites that I would drunkenly recommend to everybody and anybody! Hell, I’d recommend it if I was sober. Like, now! Go watch if you haven’t already!
