I wish I could love this game but the throwables meta, which I suck at, makes it lowkey unplayable for my lizard brain, I have like 40 hours on console and am already 6 star cause I’m a decent shot, and then I run into people who have mastered the audio and map so perfectly that while I’m pie’ing a window I get a perfectly cooked dynamite stick to the face, I want to like this game, but it’s too punishing to play solo

The point about every hunter having the same amount of health is so crucial. In games like Tarkov or even in battle royales the difference armor makes on balance is enormous. It makes loadout choice at the same time more complicated (since there are more variables to account for) and more restricted (since you have to always assume other players are using high level armor).
The level playing field in Hunt results in you always feeling like you had a chance in a fight, no matter what loadout you have. Even if there's a huge skill gap (which unfortunately happens a lot even with SBMM) in the back of your mind you know that if you had gotten a little luckier or just payed a little more attention you could have gotten the kill.

I had one highlight experience in Hunt:
Myself and a random fellow joined together in a pair and went out into a game, I brought a single-shot sawed-off shotgun and a combat axe.
We were just going about the map and didn't have any encounters up to this point: We crossed through a corn field and wanted to get into the farmstead that was across the way, seemingly though there was a sniper hiding in a barn that we did not see and they waited until we were at our most vulnerable - ducking through a hole in the fence-line - then opened fire.
What followed was a bout of insanity that I have never experienced again in gaming. My companion was shot down, this prompted me to retreat into the cornfield to conceal myself. I sat there stuck in a bind without an idea of what to do, but apparently, neither did the sniper. You see, I had just gotten off a game of Dead by Daylight, and while playing as a survivor my eyes were opened to the potential that a cornfield has to conceal you.
After a moment of waiting, the sniper made the rash decision to come out with a lantern to ignite my companion, little did they know, I had manoeuvred a distance down the fence, ducked under a different hole, hid in a bush and was able to shoot him before he managed to finish my companion. I picked my companion up only for him to yelp a warning and get shot back down. Another pair of players came from the direction of the barn gunning for us both, I was on the other side of the fence and made the split decision to put a pile of lumber between them and I, I then managed to shoot one with my gun, headshot instantly downing him, and his partner, expecting me to be reloading my single-shot firearm, pushed me only to run headfirst into my axe.
I picked up my companion again and he was promptly shot AGAIN by a pair of players coming down the road on my right, I retreated into the cornfield but apparently the noise generated by the skirmish thus far had lured another pair of players from the road on the left, both teams jumped into the cornfield and they all began shooting at each other with me concealed in-between with the crossfire whizzing over my head.
But as was stated before, the poor fools were in my territory. With a cool head, pinpoint focus and calculated movement, one-by-one each team would fall to my axe, gunshots, screams then silence in the fields. Somehow I had soloed seven men.
I picked up my companion one last time, he'd been watching me in spectator mode and was flabbergasted. We didn't even bother with the bounties, we looted the bodies and ran, wheezing and giggling from the aftermath. Soon the bodies of these hapless hunters would be dismantled by crows and only the corn was left witness to a slaughter that... If I'm honest, I had no idea how I pulled it off! And I was never able to recreate such a 'clean-house' scenario in that game again.
It was awesome, one of a kind. And a testament to how unique Hunt: Showdown is.

Honestly I love moments on Hunt like this, it honestly makes you feel like a legend when you pull off some crazy stuff.
I had a moment one time when I was duos with a friend and we had just killed a bounty and set up traps, then 3 full teams tried to come for us and we dealt with them all. Two of the teams came at roughly the same time from different sides and didn't even encounter each other, I took on one by myself whilst my friend was on the other side dealing with the other. I managed to deal with the team I was fighting first and went over to help my mate and then before we could even breath, another bloomin team of 3 showed up haha. Thankfully the traps helped a bit with the first two teams though.

In my experience, Hunt: Showdown was always just... Odd. I love the game but everything everyone said about it always felt the opposite of what was said.
For the SBMM for example, even after several weeks it never felt like I was put with people around my skill. I always felt like I was put against people leagues above me who just so happened to be put into a hunt with me on their way up the ELO ladder. Pretty much every match went the way of going well right up until either I'd simply die due to a player completely stomping me in an encounter or I'd simply... Die to a player who gave absolutely zero indication they even existed to me outside of the fact they'd just headshot me.

    • @murdurmuffin7872
      @murdurmuffin7872 2 месяца назад +43

It takes a while to learn everything. There probably was some sign or indication, you just didn't know what to look/listen for... or know that the absence of something was important.
For example, last night my buddy and I were about to go into the boss lair when I got a "feeling" that we shouldn't go in just yet. There were no sounds, no distant battles, no AI walking around the lair, no birds or horses... and the boss indicator was pulsing white indicating there were no other hunters in the zone. Something just didn't feel right. I told him to go inside and start working on the boss, that I'd stay outside and watch. Sure enough, about 30 seconds after he got to work a duo comes out of the bush across the field headed straight for us. They had intended to ambush us after we had our ears filled with screaming boss noises. They didn't count on me waiting outside in a counter ambush.
I've easily had a hundred situations like that and experienced both sides of it. Hunt is not a game to be picked up quickly, it's absolutely one that needs to be studied and experienced first hand a thousand times before you get a handle on everything. I rarely get wall banged any more, I rarely get sniped from across the canyon, but I still get ambushed and outplayed all the time. I've died to traps set out in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. Riloe described it pretty much perfectly. Every single match is a double blind experiment.

    • @AcitoriaVakarianIdunno

      @@murdurmuffin7872 Which I know.
But when there's dead silence because I'm watching what I believe to be an aftermath of a fight from somewhere hidden and I simply die all of a sudden... It becomes a bit hard to listen for things.
Sure there is times like that where I'll admit that it was well planned to use distractions... But there's also an equal, if not increased amount, of times where I simply... Die out of absolutely no where. Like I don't even hear a single bit of hint/info until after I've died sort of "out of no where," including the gunshot that killed me.

I don't think any other game has given me as much joy in skill progression. I used to play competitive halo (H3, H:Reach) and I gave CoD my best efforts up until the SBMM apocalypse. Nothing has been like my journey in Hunt though. Went from a newbie occasionally getting a lucky shot and dying way more than I was comfortable with, to a 5 star ambush nightmare in just under a year. It's been a wild ride.
Last night I was playing with a 1* buddy who got me into the game. He ended up getting redskulled due to MY mistake, and I had to go steal a bounty token from a kill greedy solo player across the map... alone. Ended up coercing said solo player to let me navigate his booby trapped lair for the spare token instead of fighting it out. Rescued my partner and he was able to retire his hunter. Felt really good to experience that kind of "can't plan that" story.

One of the interesting aspects of the game you didn't mention (there's a lot of interesting things to mention - impossible to fit them all in one video!) is the shooting itself. Hunt rejects the high velocity, fully automatic weapons we're so used to from other shooters and instead gives us single-action revolvers and rifles with one shot in the chamber. Every shot counts, because there's going to be a significant delay between them! It forces the player to be more deliberate and considerate with their shooting and to consider other options to gain the advantage in a fight such as traps and laying ambushes. Positioning, listening, and patience are all important qualities to succeed, and I'd even say more important than what particular weapon you're bringing to each round.
It also allows firefights to be slow, drawn-out affairs. I've had multiple compound fights last for 10 minutes or more as each group attempts to out-manouver, out-smart, and out-last each other. And I tell you what, they're always more intense and stressful than any fast paced shooter action I get from other FPS games.
    Great video, by the way!

I once worked with someone who was a semi-professional fencer. He told me intermediate players like him were average difficulty, but outside of that, beginners were just as dangerous as experts. The reason being as a semi-pro, everyone was doing the same dance waiting for their opponent to slip. While experts would take advantage of mistakes he didn’t even know he made, beginners were so random with their behavior that the “dance” wasn’t reliable, because as much as he could try to force someone into it, there was no way to tell when they would do something random and stupid and get a strike.

You have alot of good points and I love having people explain things in words I cant.
but another thing alot of people dont really talk about is the "down time"
with hunt matches being set up that way there is alot of down time were you arnt ACTIVLY shooting someone, and in modern shooters thats like the greatest sin you can commit.
but I love that because you dont get combat fatigued, its not just 10-30 mins (or several hours if you can chain matches fast enough) of non stop combat with no chance to breath... its alot of walking, planing, keeping a tense ear out for enemy teams that are also scrambling around...but that calm tenseness ELEVATES the gunfights making them feel all the more intense because the fight is a peak in the match rather than the constant median and 'expected status quo'
its like a horror game/movie. if its just non stop jump scare and spook back to back it eventually becomes grating, but if it puts you on edge constantly, teasing you and making you crave something to happen...that when something DOES happen you REALLY feel the scare... its the same idea with the matches of hunt.

I had this game in my library for a while and never played it. After your video I installed it and motivated two of my friends to play it.
I've waited to write this comment, I wanted to play and feel that it is described in your vid (40h for the moment).
And damn the sound specialisation, the atmosphere and the satisfaction of fights. Never felt that so quickly in a pvp game (1000h on PUBG and 2000h on CS).
This afternoon we did 2 grand slams (with 2 teams destroyed), we had all had a slime on our faces for a long time. Because of what ? Satisfaction, we were proud of our games.
Hunt is for me one of the best pvp games (despite the bugs and the awful UI).
PS: The sensation of hearing someone in your headset and knowing exactly where you're looking is as real as life. Once again, I've never seen anything like it in a game, multiplayer or PvP.

I was so excited when you brought up yomi. I thought you were going to talk about yomi hustle (your only move is hustle) its a turn based fighting game. that very much follows the rule of "yomi" you were actually talking about. never knew that yomi meant that or had a place in game design, and i can only assume it was intentional when used in yomi hustle

Yomi hustle had to (technically) cheange its name to 'your only move is hustle' because Dave Sirlin, the guy who coined the term, used it in the title of one of his own games and is a dick about anyone else using it - although to be fair he is also clearly a talented and insightful game designer.

This type of "instinctive" gameplay can be achieved in pretty much any game. The difference is how much it is expected and integrated in the gameplay. For example, back when I played Counter Strike way more (mind you I was never that good) I think that I got so used to flanks and dying in specific ways that I started expecting an enemy to come from somewhere. I started to tell myself what the last enemy would do as I spectated my teammates. To this day CS is the only game that has done that to me.
Sorry for the rant, just wanted to share my experience with instinct and how I realise what "game feel" actually means.

My biggest concern with where Hunt is going (as someone with an unhealthy amount of hours in the game) is the current situation with bullet penetration.
In case you didn’t know, they recently “fixed” a bug since the game initially released that gave weapons decent damage when they penetrated surfaces. Now, even stuff like long ammo and Nitro do negligible damage through most surfaces.

One thing I like about Hunt is that when you lose or die, you rarely ever feel the game is bullshitting you.
'Aw man I shouldn't have peeked that spot again.'
'Aw man maybe I shouldn't have ran into the compound'
'Aw man maybe I could have gotten the last guy with my melee when he was low'
Hugo Martin said this when he was working on Doom: Eternal; *"We're fine with frustrating the player so long as they have something to learn."* and I think that applies to Hunt: Showdown as well.

  • @Ricval33

I tried to get into hunt showdown because one of my close friends was (is) really into it.
I just couldn’t because I found it too hardcore… Barely any UI, so many things thrown at you from the start, extremely hard to differentiate enemies from the environment and just overall very punishing as a new player. It felt like I could never get the upper hand on others no matter what strategies I tried simply because there was always something I didn’t know or understand. (Keep in mind I have about 80hrs into the game)
At its core though I do think it’s a good game and I really like the aesthetics, but yea similar to Dayz, it’s just too punishing for little reward.

Hunt is a game I really wanted to like. When the early marketing was going around it caught my attention mostly for the world, lore, and PVE elements. Gothic horror cowboys with occult knowledge hunting demonic monsters corrupting the landscape was cool, and is still an incredibly cool concept. The PvP felt from all the material I saw as a tense possibility, which seemed fine at the time, but it turned out to be the focus of the game and 90% of what you're doing in it; navigating the hordes and monsters to take down the main boss and get out with the bounty is almost a footnote compared to the meat and potatoes of the game. Hunt feels like someone killed and hollowed out a game I would have adored and used the skin to dress up a game I would have ignored.

Hunt: Showdown is the only extraction shooter I've ever been tempted to play. I had a brief stint with Tarkov. I felt so far out of the loop I'd need to spend months of my life I didn't have banging myself against the skill gap until it pitied me and let me have fun. It never felt rewarding, only punishing. Hunt: Showdown seems like a different beast that more aligns with my interests, that I'd actually like to spend time on if the itch ever comes around, even if the skill gap is an equally immense ocean of suffering. Maybe I can finally bridge that gap between me and the average player. Thanks Riloe.

I've done pvp in Destiny, and Halo, and a few other shooters in the past and none of them hooked me. But there is something about Hunt. I've gotten some good plays, and I'm usually not just steamrolled. But there is something about the mix of atmosphere, gameplay loop, and the way the firefights feel that just keeps me in the game.

Great video. I only have about 40 hours in hunt, and I'm still 3 stars, but my trio is a 5 and 6 star but I've never felt the matchmaking made me want to quit. Yeah there are games where we get demolished, our record time was 45 seconds in a round before getting triple headshotted at the first location, but even with the rank disparity I never felt the game was unfair, just that I could improve. The game does have an incredible ability to give you long range engagements when you bring a shotgun and short range when you bring a rifle. I'll live and die by the Lebel and Sparks though.

I would play the hell out of this game if I had friends that already played it, it is SO hard to get into as a solo newbie though.
Talking as someone who hasn't been able to play despite hearing all about it's timeless game design mastery, my point of view on why I haven't played it yet is not [entirely] on its edgy witchhunter theme or its elaborate menu system or its outdated feeling core. As an outsider I feel like this game pushes out anyone who's unwilling to play it lightly.
    The in-depth competitive PvP balancing of the game is always apparent by anyone even remotely mainstream discussing the game, with such praise, there's no way there wouldn't be such emphasis on it, respect where it's due;
However, having experienced both friend groups too 'old' for PvP and groups too 'young' for even barely non-conventional games, none of them would be comfortable with Hunt. It somehow perfectly avoids both extremes of the "Tarkov" and the "Talkov".
    If the already rare amount of praise going towards exfil shooters was all along about morally-grey interaction between potentially-likely-hostile strangers, most of all in the predecessors of the genre like DayZ n whatnot, even less so in games like Hunt;
The "Talkov" of the game only ever arrives after an exceptional amount of time spent learning the game, when in other titles, even hardcore ones like EFT, it can just brew up out of collective inexperience of the vast environment.
It may sound unfair to imply that's not the case for other games but I would like to consider this game much faster in comparison which works against that idea.
Essentially, these are time-sink games, regardless of how 'derogatory' or 'reductionist' that may sound, it doesn't imply anti-consumer grind mechanics in play; Under this context I'd like to say it plays into exactly what you described, (touching up on terms I cooked up in prior comments again) the game makes use of learning through instinct rather than memorizing through design. I called it a design flaw of Exfil Shooters prior, painting the idea of 'Learning through Design' to be preferable, I still think the same, hence why I think the game's a time-sink. I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing despite being a flaw; it just shows for the game's core being outdated in my view.

As a 3-4 Star who hasn't played recently, Hunt is probably the Extraction/BR game that I play the best.
At my MMR, I definitely feel that sound is not only an advantage that players can use to quickly analyze Hunt's depth, but also a weapon.
In my first few hundred hours, I've seen many players fail to register an enemy unless they make a noise or are obvious and moving. I even saw this in my friend group that introduced me to Hunt.
I've had a lot of fun building a playstyle around using visual and audible stealth, deception through noise, and just general ratting. I still remember my first PVP kill, which consisted of me sitting in a bush between compounds standing up to shoot him when he ran up. My favorite kill was a well-acted "I'm blind!" callout in local to convince them to push into a Slate after flashing.
When playing solo, I'm not technically good enough to handle the bosses, so I just play to Hunt teams 1v2 or 1v3. Use the bow to pick them off and, when they come to investigate my bush, a decisive frenzy with a machete to finish the survivors.
Hunt: Showdown is a horror game first and a shooter second, and I intend to remind the sweaties whenever they approach with a Yomi 1-3 mindset.

Hunt showed me that I just don't like extraction shooters. PvPvE (as well as PvP ones) is just an irritating game mode to me. I don't find engagement in spending hours building up a character just to lose it all from a single person camping an objective or extraction point. This type of game is a hot bed of try-hards and I don't really want that as a way to cool down after work. If my job was to play video games, it'd probably be a different story.

A friend of mine got me into Hunt, taught me how to play, how to listen. I'm a slot machine when it comes to performance, no matter the game. I've been six stars, I've been three. Throughout it all It's hands down been the most unique and rewarding shooter I've played. The mainstays of fps tie dopamine to quantity, kills in seconds of one another, streaks as high as you can get them. Hunt ties it to quality, the quality of your decision-making, your patience and aim.
It has it's 'junk-food' tools, fanning chainpistol, levering terminus, ratting in a bush 120m out with a mosin sniper. But buy and large you're on equal footing, one headshot and you're dead, you can hear everything. You just have to listen hard enough.
I'd encourage people to try Hunt but try it knowing you are going to get your head handed to you, that it's at least a passive investment of your time to learn the tells, how to move and how to deal with things. There are players that will abuse every advantage they can but putting an arrow between their eyes after being somewhere other than what they thought is one of the most rewarding experiences in fps.

There was a period where playing Realistic Tanks in War Thunder was similar to how you describe here... then they ruined it and one of the ways they ruined it was messing with the audio which as far as I know is still quite broken to this day. I haven't played for a few years now... being bombed by aircraft, which wasn't always a thing, and not being able to tel how far away an enemy vehicle is gets old pretty quick. Sometimes, other vehicles close to you just get drowned out or make no sound at all...
