    ⚠Corrections:
    The goggles Hound Wolf Squad wear in Resident Evil: Village seem to be the recently developed L3Harris F-Pano, a Panoramic NVG with integrated Thermals.
    Interesting addition: the earliest depiction of Panoramic NVGs in media is possibly in 2010's Alpha Protocol; G22 Operatives seem to wear ANVIS 10s or something similar.
    Thank you for the comments with corrections and additional info! Significant amounts of research writing went into this video, but as with any subject you're unfamiliar with, I'm sure there are some holes in the data.

      Qtnvgs makes some that are 17k-20k and thats really good however my gripe with them is u really gotta tighten your helmet on ur head and add extra heavier counterweights or the helmet will sag… but tighter helmet+heavier load+ cumbersome makes everything worse… instead a pvs31 in wp is more comfortable lighter and overall easier to use… HOWEVER FOR DRIVING AND NAVIGATING QUADS SUPERIOR.
      So in conclusion if im warfighting id chose wp binos any day of the week but if im maneuvering quads…

      @@riloegaming Heya! Can't do it in Ground Branch unfortunately, though there is a way to disable the blur you see on your character when you use the goggles. Disabling the blur also lets you see through magnified scopes in the game, so it's unfortunately stuck behind a system mechanic. Unless they add a way to dial your scope in the future, I'm not sure they'll let us use magnified scopes with them.
      Thought I'd mention since I make a lot of Ground Branch mods and spend a lot of time with the game, and hearing you mention it in the video was SO awesome to see! I also got drawn to the video because Night Vision and how those devices work are so intriguing to me, and I love talking about it, so seeing you deliver all this information was amazing to hear! Great video!

    • @Nighttimeduck
      @Nighttimeduck 3 месяца назад +4

      No not really. There are a few that do ok even if you can get the eye relief right but there are other issues. You have to really mess with diopter focus on the scope to get the reticle close to matching the same focus as the target and alot of the time it’s not possible. When you can get it to work your tube is focused so close it’s not usable for anything else. Only use case I found for it is getting lasers close before zeroing. Sometimes it works out great though, some of the less common ACOG models just so happen to work despite not having adjustable diopters or parallax adjustment.

    • @NamTran-ie7yr
      @NamTran-ie7yr 3 месяца назад +5

      GPNVGs are nice but there’s a reason why you still see dual tubes used more frequently. Even with a counterweight on the back of your helmet, your neck will be pretty unhappy after extensive use. You likely won’t want GPNVGs in your bag if you’re out and about for days on end. Hence PVS-31s remain common.
      Also not just the cost from having 4x tubes, but the real deal special operations groups buy the highest grade tubes. The “best” isn’t GPNVGs, but fusion tech (thermal plus light amplification) is the future. All GPNVGs do is increase FOV. The new COTIs are already out there, and definitely have an advantage.
      Correct from others saying you can actually use magnified optics with NVGs. Really comes down to the eye box and if the tube gets in the way or not. I have not had issues with using my dual tubes with my G33 magnifier. Is it optimal? Not really. But it has its applications. Quad NODs are yawn honestly. Nice to have, but if you don’t run NODs often, quad vs. dual vs. single….i can see people just fail IRL. Honestly, single works fine, I have duals now and I’d argue the advantage they provide is more so less eye strain. But my trusty PVS-14 still had a purpose…just easier to have on you.

    Riloe one thing about the GPNVG depictions. There is a mod for a VR game called Hot Dogs Horseshoes and Handgrenades. That has GPNVG's depicted perfectly. They work by literally rendering night vision in those goggles. and those goggles sit on your helmet rather than a filter being applied to your screen. you can adjust the positioning of both sets of lenses to fit you perfectly. The effect you get is similar to the one from ground branch and you end up with a very immersive experience. Sadly there is no better depiction of it yet.

    A nerdy comment. When charaterizing night vision tubes, it's normally not thought as "pixels" or "resolution" in that sense, a more accurate way to describe how they are tested are "line pairs per milimeter", which is how many black/white line pairs you can resolve in one milimeter of physical space. Thebmilitary uses that line pairs per mm due to the fact that image intensifying goggles that they use are analog, not digital. "Military grade" requires at least 64 line pairs per mm.
    As for why they changed from green phosphorus screens was that it turns out in dark conditions the human eye doesnt see best in the green spectrum. In the human eye there are two types of photoreceptors, rods and cones. Cones better at well lit conditions and distinguish color, they are located at the center of your vision. Rods are better for low light vision and are at the edges of your vision, and as mentioned in the video are what your peripheral vision uses. The light sensitivity of rods peaks in the blue spectrum, around 500nm.

    • @riloegaming
      @riloegaming  3 месяца назад +52

      Not to be an "actchually" guy, but the "Pixels, or picture elements... etc" line at 1:51 is pulled directly from one of the studies this video was based on, verbatim. Line pair per mm showed up a lot too though. That detail about the rods/cones stuff came up in one of the laters studies as well, but TLDR a lot of the interesting science had to be cut from the video for time. I wish I could link all the studies I used in the description, but some of them are PDFs I downloaded from god knows where at this point, it was quite the search for this info! 😅

    • @Nighttimeduck
      @Nighttimeduck 3 месяца назад +9

      Line pair per MM is still a measure of resolution, just a different one. The data sheets for my tubes list the spec as resolution. Also tube screens are made with phosphor not phosphorus.

    NVG builder and user here, this video covers all the major game titles that try to implement POV of GPNVGS very well. A few things of note: Ground Branch's POV of GPNVGS is exactly what it looks like IRL, all the details are strikingly accurate. You have to suck the GPNVGS all the way to your eyeballs to get the full peripheral advantage which means you cant really wear eye pro, a disadvantage in my opinion. You actually can use magnifiers with night vision goggles, it just requires messing with focus and playing with your eye relief. CQB is easily the biggest advantage you get with these bad boys but the extra weight endured during extended training or operations can cause issues.

    One notable error in your presentation which stuck out to me was the statements about being unable to use magnified optics in ground branch... Here's the problem with the assessment, From personal experience, you CAN use magnified optics in conjunction with night vision goggles, they do not fall out of focus and inherently bloom out. If you can adjust the eotech in front of the magnifier to the NV settings, you can use it AND the magnifier in front of the NVG. I have personally done this with a Trijicon VCOG in real life. The REAL limit of this is in fact that it is horrendously cumbersome to position your lens inside the eyebox of a magnified optic, and most often magnified optics do not transmit light well enough for it to be all that practical to use NVGs behind them, as the greater the magnification, the lesser the light transmission, and it really only tends to be useful even on LPVOs on very bright nights.

    insurgency: sandstorm has nighttime variations of its maps in which players can equip NVGs in the equipment selection menu. haven't played these maps in a while, but IIRC, sandstorm's depection of NVGs and GPNVGs are pretty well done. there are green filters and amber filters, but only the GPNVGs can use white phosphorous filters. the GPNVGs also have a higher FOV than the other NVGs available. the trade-off is that they cost quite a bit more to equip compared to the other options on the table.

    I’ve built and owned dual PVS14s for about 3 years now, something I’ve always dreamed about in tarcov is the ability to blemish your tubes if you look at light too long or have a laser shined directly into your night vision. I think it would be super cool to be able to choose to be able to assemble your own nods with different generations/blemished tubes at a lower price. Eventually overtime the fleemarket will have cheaper blemished used gen 3 tubes or even cheaper blemished gen 2 tubes. It would also be pretty cool knowing that if you bought a blemished tube it have been blemished through another player in active combat.
    The addition of different night vision bridges as well you can get a wider pov with a bridge that just pans the two tubes out farther. Stat increases for better bridges would decrease the amount of time it takes to stow your night vision up or deploy your night vision down would also be an interesting addition.
    also correcting the difference between NVGs with an eye cup vs NVGs with an eyecup, I should still be able to see the terrain in my peripheral vision with NVGs without eye cups, albeit dark I should still see if someone turns on a white light or fire off in the distance in my peripheral vision.
    TLDR: at the start of a wipe all tubes are brand new and clean and overtime tubes become blemished and cheaper through hard use. Different night vision bridges can pan dual tubes to get a wider FOV as well as decrease the amount of time it takes to stow and deploy your NODs as well as correcting peripheral vision with NVGs without eye cups.

    There's two key aspects that you didn't touch upon that make a lot of people who have access to these tubes choose not to use them. And those are weight, and lack of manual gain control. There are newer housings that fix the later, but the weight savings you get by going to binocular tubes makes a lot of people favour them for most use cases.

    Another funny slur for these is Reindeer Antlers. I think it comes from airsoft because after Zero Dark Thirty, a ton of plastic shell replicas hit the airsoft market and because they had no function other than decorations, they were always flipped up, hence, "Reindeer Antlers."

    Fantastic video. I’m a huge night vision enthusiast and own an RPNVG with L3Harris unfilmed white phosphor 18UM spec tubes. My use case is for aeromedical work, shooting and hog hunting.
    I’m definitely going to start using this video as an “Intro to Night Vision” when I have friends wanting to purchase them. Like most, video games were our first exposure to the night vision world. For me, it was Splinter Cell, the original Ghost Recon, the original Rainbow Six and Metal Gear Solid. All within about a year.
    Pretty crazy how those games ended up costing me a pretty penny as an adult, between my night vision and suppressors. 😅

    The GAMMA modpack for Stalker has the absolute best depiction of nightvision I've seen in gaming. It doesn't turn your peripheral vision to black like other games and you can still see in normal vision around the edges of the NVG tubes since they do not completely cover your eyes.

    We used night time image intensifying binos in the army in 1999. We'd spot people smoking cigs over two kilometres away at night in the forest. There's also the buffered image binos, which compare before and after images. Used to spot snipers creeping up on the camp.

    As somebody who’s actually worn PVS-7, PVS-14, PVS-31A, and a version of GPNVG…the FOV and resolution improvements have been great, it’s the depth perception improvements which really helped many become more efficient with NVGs. Rating the depth perception of those NVGs from 1 to 10; PVS-7s and 14s are a 2 or 3, PVS-31As are a 4 or 5, and GPNVGs are a 7 or 8. The next generation IVAS (individual vision augmentation system) will also incorporate thermal, LIDAR, POV drone video, and networking among other features. Having the ability to pass live video feeds from multiple drones to everyone with an IVAS is an absolute game changer.

    I had the chance to work with this device throughout my time in the military, I really want to give props to you for the research you've put into this video, it was really accurate and enjoyable to watch. The Goggle has slightly fallen out of favor in the past for its weight and bulk, compared to dual tubes the GPNVG doesn't articulate, you will often find yourself getting stuck or banging your head on a doorway, additionally its almost twice the weight of dual tubes which is why the latter is still often picked even if an operation involves a close combat environment throughout its duration, at last the GPNVG doesn't have any form of manual gain which takes control away from it's user, which is something you don't want in a high risk environment.

  • @PreppedScots
    @PreppedScots 3 месяца назад +1

    One thing that the games normally mess up is the issue with focusing, your night vision device works very similar to a magnified optic or a camera where you need to adjust your objective lens so that everything is in focus and most units have a adjustable diopter to account for eyesight
    In games everything within view is perfectly clear while in reality say you had your objectives set to infinity (where you can see out to distance) then it’s a case that everything up close is heavily blurred, hands, rifle, kit on your rig, etc etc.
    This has beginning to be combated recently within the civilian world with adjustable iris’s on the object lens at the cost of loss of light transmission to achieve actual infinity, this is something I personally use on my personal device
    Going back to the general question on pano technology there’s been a few ideas being floated around in the civilian world to achieve the WFOV without getting quad tubes, panned out duel tube systems or something like the new photonis boomslang 50° lenses or the newer 58° Chinese lenses that are floating around the hobbyist circuits currently, however like mentioned at the start of the video, sacrifices the resolution of the image which makes it a challange to read anything up close even with the mil spec standard of 64lpmm resolution
    I’ve already seen a few folk in here bring up the Argus panos and also there’s alternatives from companies like Lindu, IIRC on the US side nocturn industries are making a bridge for a quad tube system and LLI will be making a kit for their new MH-1 ecosystem to adapt it into a quad tube system also

    You can buy pano night vision as a civilian btw. Second hand ANVIS-10's are on the market and Argus have released their own Pano NVG unit based off of the L3 Harris GP-NVG 18's for the US and international civilian/commercial use. They cost about 1/3 - 1/2 the price depending upon the tubes (they also use PVS-14 IIT's as it easier to source).

    As a Marine grunt, I had the opportunity to facilitate some training exercises for a higher echelon foreign military unit from a very wealthy ME country and I will always be jealous of their kit. Each member had dual tubes (31Bs) for general nighttime ops, GPNVGs for CQB, and a PAS-13D so they could use their organic rifle optics at night. Must’ve been $200k in glass per guy, easy, but I’ll be damned if they didn’t employ them correctly during the various drills and exercises. Would love to see a hyper realistic game or movie get that bit of minutiae right, as long as they include the extra batteries needed to run all those toys.

    What I really love about Ground Branch is that it's the only game where NVGs are a magical 'see in the dark box'. They still need some light to intensify. In GB you can find yourself in rooms that are actually pitch black and even your NVGs will not allow you to magically see without the aid of some form of additional illumination.

    For the SPT mod of tarkov, there are two mods that address your gripes about the way Tarkov handles the NVGs: The Borkel's Realistic Nightvision and the Realism mod. Essentially, the realism mod doesn't allow the player to scope in if their nvgs are enabled and instead will make the player point fire. Borkel's mod also attempts to make the nvgs more realistic (or as realistic as possible on a screen) by making the tubes visible and by allowing the user to see out of the peripherals where the nvgs don't cover their eyes.

    I feel like nvgs would only get more realistic when you dive into vr. Ghosts of tabor (garlic but in vr basically) does a pretty good job of depicting nods. Quads are expensive, bright areas are hard on the eyes, and long range optics are unusable (this is solved by making them extremely bright rather than blurry)
