I do love a well done plastic watch… That said $630AUD is a bit much for a watch with a sea slug on the back!
It’s an understandable error, since Sistem51 movements can’t be opened. This blancpain x swatch watch has a snap on case back so they can be opened and the movement replaced and or serviced. Given that this is your main criticism I wanted to mention it.
Not that you really can service it. A lot of the parts are soldered together, including the mainspring so you can't regulate it, and you can't easily buy bare movements and have your own watch person do a swap like you can with Seiko.
Good point! Since you can remove the dial and rotor only the bare movement remains. To replace it will still produce waste but honestly, who will ever pay for getting their NH35 serviced or repaired if you can buy a new one for €50?
I confess i queued up for an hour in covent garden. Joined the queue at 10am, no camping. Didnt get one but im glad. The queue was filled with youths who didnt know a blancpain from a bell & ross. Went home and picked up a Squale on ebay for the same price....gotsta scratch the itch.
You shouldn't fomo into these watches, wait in queues, try to flip them or really treat them as anything other than a plastic fun little watch. It's fun! I'll buy the artic, use it in the sea here in Greece ( just like my Swatch scuba) and if it breaks then it'll sit in my watch box and remind me if the fun I had with it. If you like it and are ok with the price lovely. If You don't, don't buy it and let us suckers enjoy ourselves 😉
I don’t disagree with any of this. However… I am an 80s kid and loved a Pop Swatch in my day and I don’t mind Swatch using these collaborations to make money or to build up their other brands. Also, I love Blancpain and the Fifty Fathoms is my grail watch, but it is unlikely I will ever be able to afford one. This is about as accessible as one will ever be. I’m not into the hype, but in a few months I can see myself getting myself one. You’re dead right on pointing out that once the System 51 breaks that’s it done, which makes it different from the Moon Swatches where you can generally stick another battery in. And they are pricey. I suppose it’s about going into it knowing the cons - which all the hype is designed to hide.
...Isn't the whole point of budget watches value for money? I mean, for under half the price of one of these I've got a Titanium seiko powered diver from Aliexpress.

I expected to get it back in a month or two but six months later I get a parcel from Switzerland containing an apology letter and a free Swatch watch. Since then I have owned several Swatch. My favorite is the SCUBA. They are all fun and silly. And I would love to have a Moon Swatch but I'm not going to pay that much. When the hype has died down I will buy a used one. Probably wait until they are valued at $50. Not the crazy prices now. And all the phoney ones out there. Not playing.

Hey MWC! Great show and you’re spot on with everything as usual. Blancpain was already on my radar, so much so that when I am on hols next March in Vegas I was likely going to treat myself to a real 50 Fathoms as I remember them being available when I was there a few years ago but couldn’t stretch with the dosh. Now that they’ve pulled this stunt it’s out of the question. Poor Blancpain - but at least they did this before I bought one thank heavens. Plus it’s reassuring to know that Rolex and Breitling wouldn’t ever be doing this! Statistically I wonder how many people who buy the plastic toy version upgrade to a real one and how many like me who were looking at a real one now won’t and will keep their money.

Disposable is inherent in any Swatch as is availability. They last awhile too. By the time it no longer records time accurately you should be ready to chuck it and get a new one.
Got my Moonswatch after one year. Will apply the same rationale to acquiring one of these. Will buy just for fun, as I’ll never buy a Fifty Fathoms until they make it in a wrist friendly size, which I doubt they’ll ever do. Not sure if Blancpain haven’t scored an own goal here because Fifty Fathoms sounds much deeper than 91m.
I'm just new to your channel, but Mate I have to say you're one of the best entertainer on YT! Love your enthusiasm and your clever humor. Keep up the good work! Cheers.
I’ve been able to resist the hype of the “MoonSwatch” but felt more pressure get in on the hype when this was announced. Thank you for the video because I had not idea about the movement. When I heard it was automatic I just assumed it was a conventional movement. So much of the appeal in a watch is sentimental so, not being able to service it if there is an issue kills that experience for me. Thanks for saving me the frustration. I think these watches are great for the people they appeal to but would be a nightmare for me.
If my watch could speak, "I don't feel special anymore", (that's what she said too). Glad I got rid of her before the hype. Nice to hear a true refreshing voice amongst all the fanboy YTubers.👍
Defo buying one just wont que for it dont buy a watch if some1 else tells you buy what you like... 😉 and yes you can swap out the movement as you can open it
Repeating a comment i left on a post by Britney Pearce, i saw the watches in person. They look the part, but the bioceramic has a gritty, like sandpaper, look. Furthermore they are not readily available Best Regards
@ I always watched Jeremy clarkson wear his planet ocean seamaster on top gear and wanted one but I could never afford it. So I got some cheap omega moonswatches last year. I quickly sold them and got a vintage manual steel case omega from the 1940s. Didn’t like it so I returned it. Got a new citizen automatic and vintage seiko lordmatic. And recently these past three months got rid of those Japanese watches because I kept remembering the finish and quality of the Swiss made omega watch I had. Went on eBay bought a 1971 omega seamaster that gave me what I was searching for in an automatic watch. Thought that I should get into the hobby even deeper and built a Rolex with genuine case and dial for very cheap using a miyota movement and now have a two watch collection. I have a cheap timex t78587 on the way to hold a third spot in my collection for now as a beater so that I don’t feel compelled to splurge so soon on another luxury watch. During this winter I plan to build and work on more watches. Good to stay busy watching videos on watches as well :)
Yeah that was a wonky comment, Swatch are hugely successful and everyone seems to forget what the S in Swatch actually stands for - use your loaf people!
Completely agree with you, but the movement can be serviced by a watchmaker, they can pull it by removing the crystal. It is not done as it is usually more expensive than buying a new watch, but can be done. This think still does not worth the price. Also i like the fun factor with the 🐌, they know it is not a shark so sounds fun to be a snail. I would buy 1 if they were 50£ I suppose :D
What watch are you actually talking about buddy?😅 This contains a sistem51 which is literally disposable, cannot be serviced. The entire movement can be replaced though by popping off the back cap.
And why would it not be serviced? I have seen 2 different watchmakers servicing 1 in front of me and saying it is possible it can not be regulated by hand but if it can be serviced and chances are it will run. It is not made to be serviced and swatch won't service it for you. Doesn't mean it cannot be ;)
@@StAntonioStefanov It's very similar to a typical LED light bulb. YEs, in theory, you could take it apart, fix it, and put it back together, but it's all put together with none of that in mind and you'll likely break it getting it apart and back together again.
What I don't get is them insisting on cheap construction techniques for these collabs. Within the Swatch group you'd have both the powermatic range and ETA 2824 to name a few. Stick something like that in with the dressing up (i.e. a maintainable movement), and don't make it out of melted down action man and what you'd have is a fifty fathoms for cheap, maybe £500-750 cheap instead of £350 but a good value option A bit like Epiphone or Squier in the guitar sphere
Good comparison! Although guitars need to be made out of similar materials to incorporate and bond with the musical elements but yeah! I don’t understand why there is a faux screw in caseback? Why couldn’t they have made it a proper screw down case back?????
Believe it or not the back of these actually pop off. They aren't like the other system 51 watches which are glued shut. I don't know what that says about whether or not they can actually be serviced but yeah that's the thing.
My question would be then be, how good is the seal once opened a couple of times??? They are hermetically sealed so once opened I’d read the small print on the warranty!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR yeah I have no idea, obviously don't have the watch. It's not a twist off, it just kind of pops off. This was reported by one of the other RUclips watch guys, and he even showed it opened.
All the points you made are valid. The thing is, I have Seikos already and the Arctic and Antarctic just look cool. Still on the fence but I may eventually cave and pick one up. I guess I'm weak. Swatch's diabolical marketing wizards have broken my will. 😂
At the end of the day, watches are awesome. If you know the risks of owning it, and in 4-6 years it could no longer work AND still are interested in it then I say go for it. We all gravitate towards different watches for different reasons, buy what you love and would want to wear.
Hmmm snap on caseback..so you dont have to destroy the watch if the movement need "service"...and also digital and quartz are both normal quartz watches....difference is that on digital the "info" goes directly to a digital screen and in an analog "info" goes via step motor....
If uou like the look of it, It is your wrist and your money so buy it if you want. All these Swatch collaborations are simply a very successful marketing campaign, just like most things out there.
Preach brother, preach. They should have just made these out of biodegradable material in lieu of the bioceramic seeing as the lifespan of the movement is so limited.
I think this would be a repeat of the moon swatch. At the height of the hype they were going for 3x srp which is bonkers only to be selling now below retail. The Seiko 55 fathoms are better IMHO. I love mine.
I get why they are doing it and when it comes to the Moonswatch you can atleast replace the battery. With the Blancpain collab I think Swatch is robbing people of their money. A plastic watch that will break eventaully and a movement that can be serviced. Those are just my two cents
Cant be robbed if you dont give them your money, and if you buy one then you were not robbed. Swatch didnt stick a gun in your face and say give me your money. You have to gladly hand it over.
People buy g shocks etc that are just plastic watches and will eventually break. What's the difference. People buy a new mobile phone for £1k every few years while the old ones just sit at the back of the kitchen drawer absolutely useless.
@@frankdux5693 difference is you can get a G shock for around £50... and considering they're some of, if not the toughest watches on the market they're definitely gonna outlast this cash grab
Perhaps “fleecing” would be a more accurate term then? Pushing them with the whole fomo feverish hype generation. Someone might gladly hand the money over but might well regret it later. I think that’s the point being made in this video.
So since it is disposable instead is calling it the sea slug they should have called it the 'ocean destroyer' (well the name sounds better anyway 🤷♂️).
Everything I wanted to rant about in a nutshell... I now feel better after watching! May I add that if you really want a Swatch get an full metal Irony chrono which at least looks good.
Russ - do you think in the next Bond movie, Bond James Bond will be sporting a Blancpain watch rather than an Omega; after the success of selling bucket loads of Seamasters?
Totally agree 100%. Do not join the hype train as these are just cash grabs from Swatch. For around $400 USD, I'd rather pick up a Hamilton Khaki mechanical and use it for life.
How long will the system 51 movement last? In some forms, it will be 5 years if the watch is rotated, 2 to 3 years if worn daily. That is crap for a $359 watch.
I think you are missing the point- in my opinion these watches are supposed to be fun disposable toys - I got my son into watches with the moonswatch and now he owns a Hamilton and a Seiko 5 but still he has fun with the moonswatches - same with the blancpain I can’t afford 15 k but I can happily spend 400 and have fun with it and put in rotation with my sea master and speedmaster. Nothing wrong with that. But if you want a serious watch for 400 don’t buy it.

Got mine for a fraction of the price today in Qatar. It’s better than I thought to be honest.
Disposable is inherent in any Swatch as is availability. They last awhile too. By the time it no longer records time accurately you should be ready to chuck it and get a new one.
Great video, totally agree. Spend your cash on a G-Shock!
Just get a Seiko SNZH57. I've had mine for about 5 years and still think it's one of the best looking watches in my collection.
😉 and yes you can swap out the movement as you can open it
Brilliant as always! Thank you for always keeping it real! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Repeating a comment i left on a post by Britney Pearce, i saw the watches in person.
They look the part, but the bioceramic has a gritty, like sandpaper, look.
Furthermore they are not readily available
Best Regards
If Blancpain re-released the original as what it was, a 100m scuba, with a basic ETA to keep the price down that way I'm sure they would sell
Something like that would probably go for at least 5k just for the name.
Call it crazy but the moon swatch got my foot in the door for this hobby
That’s fantastic. Why though my friend?????
The digital PRX gag absolutely did me 😂
On the contrary Swatch have actually kept Omega afloat over the last 20 years
True story from an Omega AD
Yeah that was a wonky comment, Swatch are hugely successful and everyone seems to forget what the S in Swatch actually stands for - use your loaf people!
Completely agree with you, but the movement can be serviced by a watchmaker, they can pull it by removing the crystal. It is not done as it is usually more expensive than buying a new watch, but can be done. This think still does not worth the price. Also i like the fun factor with the 🐌, they know it is not a shark so sounds fun to be a snail. I would buy 1 if they were 50£ I suppose :D
What watch are you actually talking about buddy?😅
This contains a sistem51 which is literally disposable, cannot be serviced.
If Citizen can put fugu on their case back, why not sea slug?
Plastic is the issue, not sea slug. I would say that's the best part of these watch.
At least a Fugu can swim !!!!
Just have fun I am buying one too
me too! @@MAELOB
Hmmm snap on caseback..so you dont have to destroy the watch if the movement need "service"...and also digital and quartz are both normal quartz watches....difference is that on digital the "info" goes directly to a digital screen and in an analog "info" goes via step motor....
The colors look like they did an NFL collaboration like Invicta do ... just missing the Steelers, Chiefs etc. Logos ...
I guess in this case you'd rather recommend some of homages like San Martin, aren't you 😊
I was reading the blackbay 58 has a disposable movement.
i love the indian ocean green. so why not buy it if it comes with a f---ing 1 year warrenty ?
I also kind of felt of missing out, until I watched your video, thanks! 😅
Thanks for watching!!
Why? BRUH!!! Don't be sheeple.
If uou like the look of it, It is your wrist and your money so buy it if you want. All these Swatch collaborations are simply a very successful marketing campaign, just like most things out there.
Thanks I just purchased the seiko turtle eucalyptus Australia limited edition cheers mate
Just like a Tampon will get used once and then thrown away
Brilliant, I proper chuckled at the PRX part
Right on. TBH, i feel these are more disposable than the Moonswatches.
@@Crall-xb8he I can't imagine too many people being bothered about $400 to have any deep regrets.
So since it is disposable instead is calling it the sea slug they should have called it the 'ocean destroyer' (well the name sounds better anyway 🤷♂️).
Everything I wanted to rant about in a nutshell... I now feel better after watching! May I add that if you really want a Swatch get an full metal Irony chrono which at least looks good.
the case back is snap on with these so you can at least replace the movement
Russ - do you think in the next Bond movie, Bond James Bond will be sporting a Blancpain watch rather than an Omega; after the success of selling bucket loads of Seamasters?
I think the Omega contract is so big I can’t see it ever happening!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR do you mean the contract with Swatch?
Totally agree 100%. Do not join the hype train as these are just cash grabs from Swatch. For around $400 USD, I'd rather pick up a Hamilton Khaki mechanical and use it for life.
How long will the system 51 movement last? In some forms, it will be 5 years if the watch is rotated, 2 to 3 years if worn daily. That is crap for a $359 watch.
Hey I wanna ask you a question, which is the best G-Shock for the quality/prize ratio or like the one you prefer?
5610U
Never buying any Swatch collaboration after they reassured us all their moonswatches would soon be available online but then backtracked.
Swatch is irrelevant. Nobody was going to there retail outlets. The moonswatch and blankpains saved there ass from bankruptcy.
The good news about this is that I don´t have to feel bad about spending 350 dollars on Bulova Lunar.
Then make’s a fun disposal price !
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR that's 5 tennis lessons where i come from LOL cheers
