Converted sales of the blancpain swatch to the real fifty fathoms will be difficult. Few people can wear a 45mm watch, let alone pay 10k. If the Blancpain had changed the case dimensions of the fifty fathoms to the swatch version or smaller of 40mm-43mm and with similar styling of vintage fifty fathoms, this would have been a home run.

(I have not yet been given 100% confirmation from a source I can trust completely, but apparently the movement and crystal are indeed welded in and not replaceable.)

      @@Rob_1689 A 390 € disposable watch? Really?
And the point is that Blancpain x Swatch has a less strong crystal and a movement which WILL stop working very soon and is overall far less reliable and fragile. Compare it to loads of other watches in the 50-500€ price range: so many other watches have stronger replaceable movements, far better quality crystals (even sapphire) which are also replaceable. Other far cheaper watches can be kept running for decades and decades. This Swatch WILL stop running, I'm told in approx. max 10 years, and many have had their Sistem51s stop running in a few years.

How long does the happiness or possible pride of ownership last when the plastic deteriorates the second the watch is unboxed? Not to mention the whole disposable thing. It doesn´t rhyme well in these times of us supposedly being environmentally conscious. Well... It is what it is...

I was at the Brussels Grand Place on the release of the Moonswatch, and the line was across the entire square and down the street. Though I believe they only released approx. 500 on the first day. My heart was a bit broken, but I'm kind of glad it was (in hindsight).
Yesterday we went into Brussels for some shopping food and drink and saw the new Blancpains on display at Swatch. Went in, and the gentleman showed me the collection along with the black "Ocean of Storms"...maybe the boring replica but the one that had my eye from the start. We went and had a beer at a little hidden place we routinely visit, and my wife said I should buy it. So we went back and I did. They only had 50 pieces originally and only 14 left, but surprisingly no line, but it was the watches everyone was looking at.
The couple bits of info I think that are left out is that the lum is "Grade A Super-LumiNova" and it has a sapphire glass on the rear. I gave it a good light shot around 11pm and at 6am this a.m. it was still faintly glowing, but enough so to make it legible.
I am not a fan of quartz watches unless they're solar mostly because I don't like to change the batteries, and the 90hr power reserve is the longest yet. Not on par with the real FF's 120hr (I believe its that much), but I'll take it!
My personal feelings about the one I bought is that I believe it's fantastic, but I'm going to be bias as why otherwise would I have spent €400 on it.

I could see them doing a Swatch X Breguet Type XX model in the future, but I can't see them doing much with the likes of Longines, Rado or Hamilton since they're already "budget" watches (or at least, the retail prices aren't multiple times the Swatch price). Could see a Glashutte Senator Sixties/Seventies model perhaps, but my guess is the Collab needs to be with iconic watches, so maybe they'd go back to Omega and do a Seamaster 300 or ProPlof model.

    • @almac9203
      @almac9203 Год назад

Yes it has to be an iconic watch that is also expensive. That leaves Seamaster and Breguet. Glashutte could do with promotion but it simply isn't well known enough. To get full value from this collaboration they need to introduce a smaller fifty fathoms because 45mm is simply too big for most people. I would choose 40mm over 42mm because 40mm could be unisex whereas 42mm is pretty much men's only.

I would like to see the Hamilton x Swatch, but with the Ventura instead of the Khaki. Also, if you can get the family on board (which may be the biggest issue), you would promote the differing designs as tributes to Elvis Presley, the Ventura's most famous owner.

To close the marketing loop, what they should’ve done is offered a discount equivalent to the price of the plastic version (either Speedmaster or Fifty Fathoms) toward the original in the metal. This would incentivize buyers of the X Swatch versions to get into the more expensive models.
Additionally, and perhaps more for those who were already contemplating the steel versions, they could offer the plastic version as a gift with purchase.
Awareness campaigns are far better when they they sew the seeds of brand loyalty.

Apparently before the launch of the MoonSwatch, Swatch made 3 prototypes, the BP FF, Omega Speedmaster & Seamaster. So I forecast the Seamaster is next. Blancpain is not a huge industrial concern like Omega and I understand only produces circa 7-10k watches annually. If there is a big increase in sales orders on the actual Fifty Fathoms (40% uptick in sales as has been suggested for the real Omega Moonwatch in the year following the launch of the MoonSwatch), I don’t think BP would be able or want to meet that demand, they aren’t meant to be mass market “me too” watches. So hello waiting lists.

I think that this may also not be a wholly successful story for Blancpain. Fifty Fathoms, is something that many will imagine (because they’ll not have even googled it) is very deep, adding to the mystery of a dive watch. Now, we all know it’s only 91 metres, so nothing particularly special for a dive watch. As for the availability of these collaborations, I feel that this is deliberate as a means to prolong the hype for very little cost to Swatch.

Rich man's toy. They might not be unaffordable, but it's a lot of money for a novelty conversation starter. They are being flipped for about £800 on eBay. People spending that much will almost certainly already have more expensive watches. This isn't the democratisation of quality watches. It is a marketing exercise money grab by Swatch. It doesn't damage Blancpain's reputation, but it does seem to go against the fundamental concept of watch Swatch watches are for.
