    I bought my first G-Shock in 35 years last week - the 5610u. It does everything better than any of my automatic watches, and it even has a notable history to refer to, namely 40 years of consistent success. The fact that it is a great watch and a beater, makes it rather special.

    Great list, Russ! I'd add:
    1) G7900: low temp LCD for us poor Canadians, plus a moon phase (plus lotsa movie cameos)
    2) GG1000: the awesome ana-digi mudmaster with a compass
    3) GW9400 Rangeman with instant stopwatch and a surprisingly useful barometer while camping!
    Cheers!

    Always up for a G Shock vid!! I decided to do a quick inventory of my collection and I currently own twenty four G's. Those were all excellent picks Russ. Like you, I love my GBD 200. I have a couple of models with a smaller form factor like the MTG-M900 and the G300 Street Rider. I believe they are older designs as they are really difficult to come by now. The MTGs are Tough Solar and Multiband 6. The GD-350-1BER is a stealthy all black with a vibrating alarm and the best negative LCD panel I've seen on any Casio. The numerals glow a greenish gold color when light hits them. Not sure why Casio hasn't made all of their negative displays this way. It's one of my all time favorite G Shocks

    MWC, I presently have three G-Shocks: the G7900, GA1000, and GA100. I'd like to get a square G-Shock like the original I had. I had one of the early ones when I served in the US Navy, BTW. I bought one of the square G-Shocks back in 1983 or 1984. I dropped it, hit it, dropped it paint, removed the paint with dry cleaning solvent, had salt water on it, and so on. No matter how I abused that watch, it came back for more! I've been a fan of G-Shocks ever since... :)

  • @MrOmriSan
    @MrOmriSan Год назад +2

    My father had the original G-shock. He bought it in the late 80's and the original battery lasted for 19 years! Legendary watch.
    He bought it after one of the guys at his work got one and back then know one really knew what a G-shock is.
    After that guy got the watch he was pranking people - telling them he had enough of this watch and toss it onto the next wall.
    A couple of years ago I got the 5600 and when I got it my father asked me why I bought an old watch.. 🙂
    I love that watch.

  • @dorbei
    @dorbei Год назад +10

    A G-Shock that often gets overlooked, because it is considered the DW-6900's "little brother", is the DW-9052. That model was quite revolutionary, as it was the first G-Shock that split the date and time display - a feature that has become a staple among modern digital Casios. I recently got the DW-9052-1V (the original color scheme from 1996) and IMO it blows the overrated DW-6900 (which is really just a mash-up of the DW-5900 and the DW-6600) out of the water. Such an iconic, stealthy and timeless design.

    • @squirelova1815
      @squirelova1815 10 месяцев назад

      Ah, yes, the nice looking little DW6900 can be seen as "stylish" but it seems a bit "weird" to me in the G-Shock evolutionary timeline.

    • @Ricelord4
      @Ricelord4 Месяц назад

      I have a DW-9052, as well. It was my brother's old watch, but he's letting me hold onto it. Had to replace the bezel, bezel studs, spring bar, and battery, but it still works after 15+ years. It's super comfy, and it still has the best EL light out of all of the CASIO watches I have. I'm not sure which design I like better - the 6900 or 9052, but I'm glad I have both.

    At first I was skeptical about the G-9000, after numerous reviews warning about its hard to press buttons. But now that I own it, I wouldn't have it any other way. They constantly remind of the Mudman's sturdiness and safety, which in turn gives me a peace of mind no other watch in my collection can provide.
    Since I was missing a green G-Shock anyway, I snagged the one from your video for 77€.
    For that price the functionality it offers in combination with its protective qualities, the G-9000 is second-to-none. Not only is it a great stopwatch, it also has world time, DST and 4 alarms.

    Thanks, great lineup. I have the Rangeman GW-9400-1 positive display, black with red accents. This is the only G-Shock I have and really love it, does everything I need and a lot more. I bought a G-5600UE-1 solar, positive display, but found it a bit small especially the strap, so gifted it to a friend. Considering getting another one or the 5610u positive display. The GBD-200 looks good, probably the only negative display I would buy as legibility is important for me. The Casioak watches also look good. Decisions, decisions!

    I love Casio, and especially G-Shock. My first and only G-Shock is the gw-m5610. I got it about 2 years ago, and I use it almost daily. Its solar battery and extreme accuracy have made it THE time/day/date reference for every other watch/clock in the house.

    I have to agree Russel the GBD-200 display is bonkers, incredibly readable even from the moon (assuming you have a decent enough telescope and you're not on the wrong side of the planet). The 5610 is probably my favourite though (bonded with this one during a couple of surgeries in hospital a few years ago, this one will never be sold) ahead of my full metal 5000's and the resin 5600's. I'm also a fan of the 7900 so you can tell the tide and what the moon phase is without even looking up, now that really is amazing.

That thing is basically useless without it. But after reading some more info about solar watches and I heard it actually lasts longer than other watches, even those that have 10 year batteries, my opinion on solar watches changed and I now find it useful and reliable.

    1) Looks absolutely bad bass. Retro futuristic, a timeless looking thing. Originally launched in 1992, It's SO good that they are still making it.
    2) Wore by John Goodman in the Big Lebowski...hence the nickname "The Walter"
    3) First G-Shock wore by an astronaut in Space
    4) First G-Shock to have "3 eyes"
    5) Originally It didn't have a backlight, new ones do have
    6) Back in the 90's, It was a hit with skateboarders (?) in the west coast, before being re-imported to Japan in which It gained huge popularity among musicians and trendsetters (?)

    Thanks for the update. Personally bought the solar powered version of casio G-Shock DW 5600 watch...
    Utterly disappointed with brand Casio G-Shock!
    Just after 3 or 4 months of normal usage ( No swimming, No Diving, No Extreme water Sports, No Surfing) it developed fog and water vapour inside the glass disrupting the time view.
    I went to the Casio Service centre but the service center people bluntly told me that there was no option for replacement. They also shamelessly told me that their watches are water resistant and not water proof. They said they never claim that their watches are water proof in their advertising also. They simply changed some parts and dried the fog or water vapour inside AND after a few months the fog and water vapour inside the glass RETURNED. What a Waste. 👎
    Had it been the case of putting the watch under extreme conditions , it is understandable, but the refusal to replace the watch under normal conditions seemed callous and unprofessional on part of Casio. Utterly disappointed by such a big brand LIKE CASIO AND G-SHOCK with big & HOLLOW claims! 😒
    Big advertising and low quality.

    I have a tough solar watch that is my outdoor sports watch. It's not a G-Shock but it has done everything a G can do. The cherry on top is I got it at Walmart on clearance for $13.00 dollars.

    Before watching: GW5000U-1JF is a simply OUTSTANDING watch and 💯 worth the extra cost. All the G anyone would ever really need, and a perfect half of a two-watch rotation (if one was working under that limitation 🤦🏼). My other "half" would be the Sinn 104 I St Sa. One perfect, indestructible solar/atomic quartz G, one beautifully engineered, perfect GADA mechanical tool watch. Great vid, thanks for posting MWC 👍

I do have a mud resist but it is the GG-1000 ana-digi Mudmaster I use for trekking and mountaineering also the GA-700 in red, love the colour and my very favourite for traveling, and the Casio Royale AE-1200 world timer. But I do like your list too!

    Everyone should have a 5610 (or if the budget will stretch to it a GW-5000). My other faves are my G-011D (Cube) the original stainless square. Yes to the GA-2100 which I managed to snag at launch just before they became THE watch to have complete with waiting lists and eBay hawkers price gouging. Also love my GBD-200 ( in spaceman off-white, and now I've seen yours I want a blue one as well) Last of my five is oddity GW-M850 with the "Rally Timer" and all the top stuff like Tough Solar, Multi-band 6, and an easy to find front-mount light button. It's taken an absolute battering and still works like a charm.

    I know you're a huge Casio nerd, but who, apart from you, needs so many G-Shocks? I have two, the DW-5610 and the GBD-200 in lime and that's it. I'd rather spend my money on more serious pieces like a Pelagos, Sinn 857 UTC or some nice vintage ones.
    Apart from that, i gotta say Rus, the videography is second to none! If this doesn't get an Oscar, i don't know what will. 😂😂

    I have the 5600e for 6 years. I've beat the crap out of it dove 20ft many times in salt water, full time handyman and I ended up getting new rubber a few years back to spice it up. I've got the solar version and the military version i have a few other round models including the dive. They all are solid and I've replaced batteries, used silicone on the o-rings and never had a problem being water proof. Just don't stretch out any oring while applying the appropriate silicone.

    I'm almost 23yo and just bought my first G-shock, a DW5600BB, i love the negative display on digital watches, so that was the thing to choose this one, definitely gonna buy and collect this guys, the next one gonna be the one my father had when he was younger, i could choose that as my first, but the DW5600 is a piece of history and the design suits me more (my father had the DW5900)

    As I'm not the sportiest person out there, while I love various Casio watches - I've yet to really pull the trigger on a G-Shock. I've wanted to for some time as a sentimental throwback to my Mom having gotten me one back in elementary school as my first ever proper day to day watch (unfortunately lost between various moves). These picks have really helped give me some ideas to narrow things down a bit. Thanks for the vid!

    I have trouble getting into the DW5600 because of the Adjust button. It's recessed and on the left side of the case so changing anything is a pain. I love my GD-350 and think it's a better King G-Shock. I also really like my GA-800 ana-digi because it is a super legible 3-hander with a positive STN display and dual LEDs. As long as you can get over the gas mask look I think it's a great contender for all-rounder.

    Great summary, but wouldn’t call all of them essential. In my opinion every collector should own at least three squares (the 5600, the 5610 and certainly the GW-5000) a version or two of the 69 (the original and the GW69), a 2100, a high end Mudmaster (the 1K or the 2K) and a high end Frogman 👍
