Spot on. Years ago, I was part of an interesting meeting with Priya Rajan ji who was MD of SVB, where we had observed that SVB could loan out their deposits to manufacturers of the products developed by Startups depositing money with them (SVB back then was exploring options to get banking license in India, which they could never get). The representatives said they will explore the option and get back. They never came back. They chose to stick with ways to attract more depositors (grand challenges/hackathons to attract more startups, many a times with VC funding), which we couldn't categorize as a viable business. While output is always disastrous, the root cause behind a shortcut to make money in most of the cases turns out to be lack of farsightedness in the business.
Indian banks are more stable now, its due to these cross checks and small banks getting stopped midway that our banks are getting safer now. Read about it. You will get articles
Appreciate Mr.Banerjee for this very useful analysis of functioning of banks & their failures particularly in relation to failure of America's SVB Bank which was into doing business mainly for & with Start-up's...
Dear Akash, please make a video on stuck home buyers who have invested there live savings in these projects ,a case in point is 3c shelters & Orris infrastructure project in sector 89 gurgaon. on how they have taken homebuyers on a ride .
Good episode overall except that it was not a scam. Most of the banks holdings were locked up in long term bonds and since some big depositors decided to withdraw their money, it caused a bank run and in the process, the bank sold it's bond holdings (not sure all or some) for a loss. Fed ensured all depositors got money even above FDIC insured limit of $250K. All shareholders lost money.
If someone is paranoid about their money I have some calculations for them. PSB - 12, PvtBnk - 21, SFB - 12. Total 'Big' Banks: 45 A family of three can save upto 33.75 Crores a under the DICGC scheme. Here's how: Each bank will have 15 accounts each insured upto 5 lakhs. So 75 lakhs in each bank. 3 single accounts of Person A, B, C. 6 Joint accounts: AB, AC, BA, BC, CA, CB 6 Triple holding accounts: ABC, ACB, BAC, BCA, CAB, CBA. I don't know if this will help anyone but it was a fun calculation to do. 😂

The main reason behind the collapse of banks in the USA is that banks over there go around the world and invest in so many countries as a result the risk exposure is greater and also they invest heavily in risky fields, while exposure of Indian banks is very limited internationally and the majority of investments are done in India which limits their risk and get collapse due to their internal mistakes and a big change which hits their investments directly or indirectly. while USA banks get hit by anything anywhere in the world directly because they invest directly in the counties and the companies. (Just to highlight a very important aspect to the whole scenario)

Dear Mr. Akash Banerjee, FRS is not a Bank - but a system of 12 Federal Reserve Banks, of which FRB of New York is arguably most important. This system has historical reason - no other major economy/country has multiple central banks.

AK, Please understand economics before you talk. The investment was in very long term bonds locked for a period of time like FD's in India locked for a period of time. The issue is that if you break bond before term completion, it has to be pulled out in loss. Also the rate of interest at which they were getting returns on bonds was 50% of the current market. It is little ok if people like us get it a little wrong, but you shouldn't get it wrong even by 1%. Because people expect you to give them 100% correct information.

In America, after the bank failure, sizeable amount of total depositors' money withdrawal is allowed even beyond insured limit and that too within 2 working days. American system forthrightly takes care of Depositor's hard earned money instead of investors (who are somewhat gamblers with excess wealth). American banking system seems to render peace of mind to Depositors. This is the great solace to the depositors at the cost of bank's survival rather than vice versa scenario in india where depositors are kept languishing or made vulnerable to be duped in exercise of saving the bank. Caring factor of American system is most appealing to the depositors. Rationale of American system is perhaps that depositor is the living being and bank is non-living entity. Thank you Akash ji for your endeavour to enlighten us on bank failure issue by keeping juxtaposition Indian and American banking system.
