I'm a banker and we discuss the same things among ourselves. It is very frustrating and sad that the big loans are 'gifted' by our supervisors at the top level and we at the lower levels of leadership are harrased by the management to recover even in thousands. Of course,even the thousands to be recovered is public 's money and should be recovered but the pressure is immense . Miracles are expected from us.
Amount-wise, our top officials are responsible for more than 80-90% of the NPA and we get the heat for recovery.
In 2021, an aspiring athlete hailing from a poor family, who was enrolled at a HPC(High Performance Centre) in Bhubaneswar, was treated like as if she was a naxallite by one particular lady staff(probably the senior most by age in that branch) at a SBI branch. All she wanted was to close her account but she faced a lot of mistreatment in the form of scoldings. I can never forget that sight. I have no explanation as to why it happened other than to think that the branch was allergic to poor customers.
bank employees have become a punching bag for customers and executives. banks are using their own money from operating expenses to show recovery. there are 100 reports every month one has to submit, attend meetings and achieve target also. the future doesn't look good.
As a banker can you please explain how is a loan written off and what constitutes a GNPA or NNPA? The procedural part.

This is a known fact amongst Indians living in the UK: Businessmen from a particular community take loans worth hundreds to thousands of crores from Indian banks and then divert a portion of it to the UK and then they just willfully default on it and afterwards they just settle down in the UK !

The problem is ‘state owned’ banks. Doesn’t matter who is running the state. It was perhaps a good move to nationalise banks in the past, but the utility of that move is well past expiry date. Perhaps time to privatise them and hold them accountable.

The problem is bank employees(just for some bribe) gives fresh loan before 90 days gets over so that they can payback old loans and get fresh 90 days for new loan and this keeps on continuing until the borrower defaults when transaction becomes big at the end. I think a solution can be that there must be a 2 year cooling off period between repayment of previous loan and asking for a new loan

Whatever due diligence is being followed by CBI after the fact needs to be taught to & implemented by all the banks before issuing loans, especially public sector banks.
Pathetic working condition. I work in psb. We are forced to recover loans. So we have no choice. If any documents are missing by any chance we are penalized. Bank apne employee se bhi Paisa nikalta hai. By not increasing salary.
All r interconnected with this issue banks are greedy for earning more from interest from company so they lend money to them.

When former governor of RBI Raghuram Rajan had highligted this issue of NPA his tenure as the governor was not extended. Subramanium Swamy of BJP went out of his way to attack him. As someone who is starting his business i can tell you banks are ruthless in giving one a leverage. They will ask you for collateral and charge heavy interest rates. Even GST payback for exports is not done in a timely manner by the government. The amount of documentation required to be submitted is mind boggling. Modi government is useless. They have been way forgiving with the crony capitalist. They have pushed their risk to the common taxpayers. I am just furious at these figures. I want them to go. Satyapal Malik was right. Modi apne me mast haai. He js like to hell with everything. I fail to see how people continue to vote that man in power. We don't have much time left.

So True. Common man struggles to get a loan and farmers commit suicides with the fear of loans. But on the other hand wealthy businessman are provided 1000's of crores by banks which is never paid back and many flee the country. This is the sad reality which people of India must accept and voice for a change.

This hits so hard! I run an SME. Even during Covid time, they charged interest penalty on late payment of GST by even 4 days. 4 DAYS! All together charged us 4 lakhs interest at 18% per annum! And wrote to bank to freeze account 😢

This charge is from a different department of the govt. It's not exactly charged by your bank. However, the penal provisions under GST are very harsh. Many have gone through it and nothing much has changed. Even when the GST website was not working properly and people couldn't file returns, they levied late fees and penalties. My way or no way is the culture. This is seen in many other departments as well. The MSME/SME players suffer the most.

I am a Concurrent Auditor Assistant and I Audit loan files of all types of loans in SBI and it's true that Bank demands every single detail of borrowers and disbursement of amount sanctioned is in installments.
Very strange that where retailers are subjected to so much scrutiny for paltry loans what happens to the same bankers when the loan amount reaches 1000s of crores? Is the scrutiny inversely proportional to the loan amount? Unbelievable!
Onces i heard a auto driver saying bank give loan easyly later people after selling property but loan amount remain outstanding even onces delay in emi they charge penalty upon every day.
Thanks for making part 2 of this series. I feel your pain, when I see my father on full panic mode sometimes ; putting in some few thousand Rupees at the last moment which he had withdrawn due to emergency that was meant for the down-payment of EMI . He fears of the bad credit scores if the required amount to be deducted is not present in his account. I see this fear developing into some kind of hysteria TBH.
Some years back my housing loan cheque was cleared two days late by the bank due to some internal reason. (Those days we had to give cheques for all the monthly EMI's in advance and NEFT/UPI transfers were not being preferred by banks themselves) I was charged a late fee plus additional interest. To this day, this instance shows up on my CIBIL report which irks me a lot. I had taken up this matter with the bank but finally gave up after a while. This is despite the fact that I had an impeccable repayment track record and I have always been so very particular about repaying loans on schedule (or even pre-paying them, when possible!!).
