Visited sister in Laughlin NV. Brought home dirt from the mountain wash. For a second forgot how to pan. You brought it all back. Thank you. Pam Walton.
I really like the idea of using small lead BBs to fine tune the process. I'm in an area with nothing but some flour gold, so I'll need something like lead BBs to make sure I'm panning correctly.
I found your video because my homeschool children were interested in how to pan for gold after their science lesson on density. I grew up in the Black Hills, so I take the knowledge for granted, having been to expos and tourist traps as a child. You are an excellent teacher and craftsman! Thank you for sharing!
Great video, Gary! I would only add that before using a brand new plastic gold pan, its important to remove all of the residual oil left over from the plastic molding process. I use Dawn detergent, and light scrubbing with 0000 steel wool. I scrub the new pan until all the shiny surface is removed. This is especially important when you are panning fine to flower gold without a safety pan. Thanks for all the great videos, but most importantly, thank you for your service to our great nation. Be well, and stay safe!
I agree whole heartily. A plastic pan gets better with age just like a steel pan. As the pan ages it gets a rough texture, that helps greatly to hold the gold from sliding out when cleaning up. Thanks - Gary
Gerry ,- your tutorial ,- the tutorial from Gary Smith ( Barkerville ) and the tutorial from "WalNLiz" Australia ... are the best I have see'n so far on RUclips 👍 For Beginners is that a real good start to modify there own technique in further years ! Absolutely on of the best ,- in my modest opinion since 1980
This is a superb video. I especially benefited from your tip on keeping the angle of the pan perpendicular to the water in such a way as to keep the gravel an inch from the edge of the pan. Also, watching the inner edge of the gravel, not the outer.
Go tour the destruction left in Cali from the 49ers before you book a flight to a pristine forest. Guys like 2 toes are responsible prospectors and take care to leave it as they found it, a swarm of gold rushers leave total waste land. Don't catch the fever. Spark a passion for natural beauty.
He had patient teachers himself in that 85 and 90 year old so if you take his example when you teach your son or daughter the joys of mining and panning especially you'll create a bond with them and pass on the love of the gold hunt to future generations. Good show Gary!
I enjoyed the part when you realized that you had some gold , you had a little excitement in you voice . Also you make learning easy , I am going up north past Kirkland Lake , located in Northern Ontario Canada, there has been a recent gold discovery in the area . This will be my first time panning and prospecting for gold specifically , so even if I don't find gold I'm sure to find peace of mind .
I love the anticipation and excitement I experience each time I go out. Some times you come home with some nice gold, some times - no gold. The best part is, you never go home with nothing. The excitement of the hunt and the beauty of the outdoors is yours to keep forever! Good luck and thank you - Gary
highenergyog I'm from Timmins Ontario! roughly 2 hours away from Kirkland Lake. I'm also just getting into prospecting! I just ordered a Royal Manufacturing 30" sluice and a few pans and classifiers! If you live in Canada, I strongly recommend checking out www.Fred'sGoldPanning located in Kelowna B.C!
Nice tip with the four bee bees. The first thing I did with my new pan was to scrub it with a green pot scrubber to take off that glossy shine. It looks as if I been panning for years.
Thanks for sharing, especially that number one rule. When I was a kid, My dad was a prospector and he had a claim in Prescott, AZ. He never told me about the bottom of the pan rule. I am middle aged now, and have watched many you tube videos on finding gold. You are the first one that has shared this tip... So thank you for that! I have subscribed to the channel. Keep on keepin on!
The heavy and light rock helped me a lot ! And now at the creek I know what colors to look for red nr 1 jasper ,white nr 2 quartz nr 3 black and smooth 🤔 ? I use those as my guide now Thanks Mister two toes 😊
Thanks for the good advice Off we go to pan our Arizona dirt/sand We picked up at the base of the Superstition Mountains by the lost Dutchman’s mine Fingers crossed
I trust someone that enables comments. There will always be haters, but if you disable comments, I don't trust you. (There are certain videos on here for panning for gold that the comments are disabled, NOT yours!!) Thanks so much for your video!!
Thank you for a great video. I live in Mariposa California, with a small Creek through my yard and I think I'mm starting to get Gold Fever. You answered my main question, about the color of pans. Thanks.
THANK YOU! Im really good at panning and the #1 thing that allwed me to pan completely to clean is the very very first thing you pointed out. I've watched Lots of other videos to pick up some tips or tricks. No one explained that #1 thing and they were how to and in depth by experts. You are amazing! And you pan like i do lol!
Big help got a good starting point now in socal we have streams flowing that haven't in years bout 3 miles from Mexico border at 4000f high desert I can get way back in on my bicycle I kno to look under big rock will need to watch more on finding it but ya thanks for this
Excellent video for panning for Gold!..Being I'm new to panning and Sluicing ..I think the big thing you showed was patience.. looking forward to additional videos of yours..
when I was learning, I used fishing weight, very small ones (lead), and would use three. I lose them in the dirt somewhere, then each time would get them back, so I knew I was doing good.
Thanks. Great video. I appreciate your care for the river. Where do you stand on adding jet dry to the pan to break surface tension of the water? Is it necessary? Are their alternative methods that are healthier for the river?
Yup it is Easy! I've made it from full pan to clean in 38 seconds with the only thing you need to remember is that Gold is Stupid heavy in water and will sink right to that v he pointed out. EVERYTHING ELSE is garbage you just need to wash it off. Shaking makes the gold sink. Practice like he said The best thing is it gives you confidance!
Hey Friend, I had my first odd experience yesterday when panning. I’ve panned about a hundred times now after watching several experts & yesterday I panned out some really good strata that I know has gold in it but came up with zero gold in my pan at the end. The only difference in the process was that I broke up multiple chunks of compact iron black sand sediment before beginning the process. My question is… because there was so much extra black sand in my pan, is it possible that the gold rode out of the tailings on top of the black sand during panning? The last time I panned this soil I didn’t break up those iron sediment clumps. I simply classified the material through a coarse kitchen strainer & ended up having to pan off a lot less black sand throughout the process & had gold in my pan at the end.
Will this back wash technique of flooding the pan also work to save (non pickers, very fine gold) I have in my area, or should I back wash with less force. New to this pass time, so might sound like a stupid question....Great video saved into my favorites many thanx
Hi Gary, I really enjoy alot of your Videos!! I have seen some past GPAA T.V Shows, and I remember them EXPLAINING, that you should Rough-Up the BOTTOM of your GOLD PAN, Before you start PANNING!! You can either you SANDPAPER, or some ROCKY GRAVEL!! Is that TRUE or really NOT NECESSARY? Many THANKS, NamVetLesTreasureSeeker.
interesting - i'm fairly new to this an my location is mainly flour and small flakes too. Should I be doing anything a little different to this video for flour gold plz?
Finding Treasure in Colorado I too am interested. Here in Southern California I have only been able to fine tiny specks of fine gold thus far, but its hard seperating it from black sand
Very cool I wanna get into panning, thanks for the lesson. Is it easier to use the flat part or a pan that also have the smaller ripples for beginners?
Thanks Gary it was another great Video. Gee you are making some half decent prospectors Over here in Australia. You Are The Man Mate. Please dont take that lightly.👍 And thanks again. Do you know i even rung a local helicopter company the other day to see if they could drop us out bush were i googled and there is no access .but there was no answer. Not that we got too much coin but hey😉 you know how It is. I will call em back tomorrow. Uluru.
Its all about your priorities, should I eat this week or get a helicopter to drop me in. For me, the helo always wins! I greatly appreciate your support. I really enjoy reading the comments you guys send. Thanks - Gary

I have seen many videos of many ways to pin for gold and so far yours is the best and makes the most sense.

I grew up in the Black Hills, so I take the knowledge for granted, having been to expos and tourist traps as a child. You are an excellent teacher and craftsman! Thank you for sharing!
I've watched many videos on panning, but yours has helped the most. Thanks for the great tips!😊
same here...

been learning for eight years, still learn the finer points from all your vids. "old pros" like you know the finer points. thanks for all you do.
This is a superb video. I especially benefited from your tip on keeping the angle of the pan perpendicular to the water in such a way as to keep the gravel an inch from the edge of the pan. Also, watching the inner edge of the gravel, not the outer.
Thank you and good luck!
The first tip alone was worth the watch never heard that one before but I definitely will be watching that from now on
Thanks, just got a panning kit and I feel this video has some great tips, glad you got paid with some gold for showing us!!
That was my first lesson.
It was great, thank you.
NQ, gold fields in rainforest areas are said to now hold as much as was there 100 yrs ago.

Thank you so much you're the only one who actually made any sense on the internet

+John Gates Thank you very much! I have a new video on - How to pick a gold pan . It should be out in a day or two.
when I was learning, I used fishing weight, very small ones (lead), and would use three. I lose them in the dirt somewhere, then each time would get them back, so I knew I was doing good.
Very informative. Thanks for showing exactly what you meant and your simple tips.
Thanks. Great video. I appreciate your care for the river. Where do you stand on adding jet dry to the pan to break surface tension of the water? Is it necessary? Are their alternative methods that are healthier for the river?
I only use dish soap and I use it when I pan in a tub at home. There is no need to use any on the river. Even then only a couple of drops are needed.
you are a man full of knowledge very greatful thank you sir and looking forward to your next video
Thank you very much.
Think I'll break out the pans today and practice some more... Lol.... Great video Gary.... Can I call you Gary?...👍👍😀😀✌
Awesome video..I'm a beginner and wonder where you grab the rocks from..in the river beside the River?
Thank you for having the details because if you didn't i wouldn't have got gold thx soo much
Looking forward to your next video!
+John Gates Thank you - the great feedback makes me want to get right on the next one! If it doesn't rain I will be doing that this weekend.
Very good explanation bro!
You make it look so easy!
After you lose the fear of doing it wrong and panning out your gold, it really is easy. Thanks - Gary

My main area has flour gold, mostly all, so I am an expert at panning now lol - cuz I get the flour easy, which is harder than larger gold
