Turning the Channel 2 volume to 50% increases channel 1 gain and midrange without a jumper. The pot impedance becomes greater than the impedance of the mixing resistor at that point, which sends more of the channel 1 signal(V1A) into V1B.
You don’t really need to know how it works, just experiment with it.
If you’re into mods, lifting the mid pot grounded leg cuts out the tonestack. You’ll get a 3db increase in gain and a TON of midrange. I like to install a DPST switch in the “Channel 2 Low” hole and use it to cut out the tone stack AND negative feedback. It works in everything from a Tweed Bassman & High Power Twin to a JTM45/Super Lead/JMP/800 with 4 inputs. It’s a very “Brown” sound with those mods and it’s entirely reversible with no damage done to the amp.

    • @Polentaccio
      @Polentaccio 3 года назад +1

I've noticed that too. I picked up a Bugera 1960 Infinium for fun (because it was cheap) but I would say the downside is I am not sure it's auto bias function will work with a variac..it also has a bit of blocking distortion when I go past 7 on the treble POT with everything on 10. I might lift the ground to mid pot to see what happens with this amp as I liked it on my old home made 1987x rather than chancing the variac. It is a one trick poney sound but does kick!

  • @erictripton

6CA7 tubes are part of the recipe.
Amp will do fine without bias adjustment if you lower voltage, but to run it exactly what your center tap is wound for will yield similar results.
If it says 120 or 220 on your power transformer, that is optimum.
In other words, for me, I run 120vac.lower to 89 volts for awhile, then go back to 120vac to help tubes last. The variable trick is not a huge difference.
Provided you are using a Plexi NMV, you will always achieve Edward Van.
    Great video regardless.
I hope young players wise up to the Holy Grail of hi gain

NO...what EDDIE did with the variac was drop the voltage to where the amp stops working and then bring it back to an appropriate volume for the venue...and he ALSO had one thing that is necessary to this setup... A SECOND AMP....run the first amp (JTM 45 I believe was the start of this method and the reason for the need to do what he did to generate distortion and have effects loops )with a power attenuator into the input of a second amp...(I believe the space between amps was now co opted for certain effects he did not use in front of the amps thus making an effects loop in amps with none...I am unsure of his effects order)...the second amp got the variac for output volume (the phase 90 was likely in front of the whole thing) YES eddie later used cascading gain amps to do basically the same thing....and so do you...but if you REALLY want it to be the true sound (NOT BROWN sound...that was a WALL of sound concept like Phil Specter had...Eddie and Alex talked about the whole band meshing into a Brown Sound, so it meant bass and guitars and keys and all)

After that mod , we now see the guitar the DiMarzio Super Dist or maybe the Mighty Mite.

You're sound and tone are spot on ! Your kit is rather simple and I measure your achievement as pretty damn good ! With the "variac", it gives an interesting result but I would remove some treble (the harsh part and/or some presence is the amp is equipped with it). I would also boost the bass a bit (with a MXR or BOSS eq) since your plexi doesn't have a "resonance" control that act on the power valves. Last detail, I heard that Edward could sometime boost the pre amp of his tape delay to hit the front of the amp. That pre amp is existing (without the tape delay) in a small pedal.

totally...i think everybody ears different so to get "the" sound on your head it's no a bad thing adjust to taste...my version of the Echoplex it's the EP booster from Xotic...Cheers!

No pedals!…just the Phase 90 or my Mxr Flanger…it’s the amp crancked running at 90 volts…the correct type of pickup ( overwound PAF )…and greenback type speakers ( blackback in my case! )….

I’d be interested to know if songs you played at the beginning of the video like DOA were done before you re-biased the tubes and lowered the voltage? I thought there was a some extra bite and growl that was slightly lost later in the video.
That said the “elastic” sag/compression sounded brilliant and Show Your Love & Unchained were spot-on!
Really enjoyed the video keep up the good work.
