    The kid's are awesome, they were there to have the time of their lives. It wasn't about re-creating anything 100%, it was about getting as close as one can with what they have to the experience and sound, and most of all, HAVING FUN! Who cares about the pin point accuracy of the sound between the kids and the original, you can never replace the original, no on is disputing any of this, they were there to have a wonderful recording experience, and at their age that is the main goal. And they sure had an awesome time, thanks to Warren and Sunset Sound. These kids are amazing, and so is the whole production team - I am grateful to the kids and the enitre production team involved who spent goodness knows how many hours putting this together for all of us to watch FOR FREE. Thanks kids and and thanks to all the team who made this happen!

    I see a lot of people are doing a detailed analysis of the sound/performance, etc. but for me, just watching the whole video, seeing what was used to record that first iconic album, and watching the kids pretty much nail it, including the girl's vocals, because she has the chops, it was awesome. Forget the details of comparing it to the original recording. Even Van Halen didn't nail it the same way live. That's what's great about music. Overall, well done! Loved it!

    One thing that may be off-
    In live VH recordings from the club days, you will hear the car horns here and there, operated by a foot switch.
    I think they had taken a few and hooked them up together, just as a silly thing to have onstage. These may have been housed in a deactivated WW2 Bomb they had onstage (I'm serious. There are pics of Edward, in a club, next to a bomb) but I am not sure.

    • @chasebeavers
      @chasebeavers 4 года назад +6

      The bomb had a rack delay unit Eddie used for Eruption. I think the car horns were on a piece of plywood, but not sure.

    • @AgentXPQ
      @AgentXPQ 4 года назад +2

      @@chasebeavers I think you are right. I have since seen photos of the bomb, and it had some kind of echo in it.

    • @thomasochoa2137

    Just one tidbit; The date at the top of the "studio notes" is 12/78. The first album was recorded from 8/77-9/77 and the second album was recorded from 12/78-1/79. Based on the date on those "notes," I'd say that sheet is for the second album.

      Not only that, but the notes also say "546" (Shure Unidyne III) for the top and bottom of the snare, as well as the bass drum. The guy in this video is saying they used SM57 for that, which isn't altogether true because the 546 isn't the same as a modern SM57.

    • @StevenMikel1
      @StevenMikel1 4 года назад +1

      @@ShadovvV They probably didn't have any 546's by the time this video was made,they were budget versions or pre dated versions of known Shure mics.

    Your best video ever! I believe you have the tracks sheet for VH 2. The date on the track sheet is 12/78. Van Halen 1 came out Feb. 1978. Van Halen 2 came out early 1979. I'm sure that track sheet is for the second album. I don't think they used bottom tom microphones either. From the sketch it looks Alex had 3 rack toms in a triangular pattern with 2 microphones to pick up the signal.

    One of my good friends from the army worked there in the later 80’s. We were in a band together and I lost track of him. Garth, I miss you, buddy.

    Nicolette Larson was recording her debut album in another studio room down the hall at the very same time VH was doing their recording. Interestingly Ed was asked to put a solo on Nicolette's song Can't Get Away From You. He brought his Plexi with him to Nicolette's studio room where he cut the solo for it. Sounds nothing like his tone on VH#1 but the brown sound is still there.

      That must have been during Women And Children First because she sang one harmony line in "Could This Be Magic".

    I had to use sm57 in a recording once because there was no kick mic. That was the one of my best kick sound I ever caught.

    This is great, I'm incredibly curious now and want to try recording a kick drum with 2 57's. Great stuff as usually Warren!

    • @khronscave

      ... And yet, Warren's mix ended up with an incredibly "tubby" (read: punch-less / attack-less) kick, for whatever reason :P

      I know it's crazy to think that they used these inexpensive mics Matt! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

      Oddly enough, when I was in college, (music comp and tech) I did an album where I used an SM58 on the kick, just messing around, and it is to this day one of my favorite kick drum sounds I've ever gotten.

      I just thought, SM57's must work great for the resonant head on the toms. Usually, the bottom head is tighter with heaps of ring and tone.....hhhmmmm?

    • @khronscave
      @khronscave 7 лет назад

      You would think the bottom head would "sound" higher / brighter, but the sustain (or resonance) is actually quite low-pitched (at least, or especially, compared to the attack of the stick on the batter head).
      Do keep in mind there's a several-inch-tall column of air between the top head and the bottom head, and air is compressible, plus there's the little vent hole as well.
