Thanks for all the great fatbike content. I moved from Phoenix to Maine a few months ago and your advice set me on the correct path. Never had a fatbike, studded tires, or a ride on the snow. Now I’m set up with a beargrease, 45 north boots, tires that cost more than my dirtbike rubber, and those old man winter pants. Nailed it on my first ride, 3 hrs of single track at 20 degrees over snow and ice. Now I’m happily riding at 10 to 20 degrees. Poured over all you equipment list on the web too. You’ve got the best content available and I appreciate it. Keep up the great work, even these unobtainium bling wheels are interesting to see, the tech will drift down into more affordable versions eventually.

Nice one. I've had HEDS for 5 years, amazing, I have 2 sets now as wanted the best and rim weight matters a lot, way more than the hub.. I have cracked a couple but very easy to get fixed and still going strong. I'm a wheel builder so always build my own and use Hope hubs, which I must weigh. But for me, reliability matters over weight and getting parts. Love Onyx. Maybe next build. I have built a few for other people. I am a Hope fan though lol.
My only issue has been getting replacement spoke washers. (Impossible to get in the UK) so improvised with duck tape under a washer and it works fine.
have run mine at 5 or less in the winter over roots and rocks and bar a tiny crack have had zero issues and never had a burp.
To cut to the chase. HEDS rims rule! Period! Second place Nextie Xiphias

I’ve been running the 26” HED rims with Industry9 hubs and aluminum spokes for the last 6 years and absolutely love them with D5’s winter snd Jumbo Jim’s summer. Not as fancy as this new build though!
That HED / I9 combo is a pretty sweeeeet wheelset though... Ride on!!

I'm still running my first set of HEDs at about 9 years and still going strong. They've outlasted a couple hubs until I put some I9 hubs on them. Couldn't be happier, the lightweight wheelset is a game changer, my old Fatboy SL is still hard to beat at 26lbs (tubeless)

While I’ve been really interested in the Berd spokes since they came out, my main concerns were the mod to the hubs(that most likely voids your hub warranty) and the how they’re attached to traditional hubs doesn’t instill great confidence. Onyx’s custom hub that addresses both seems like an awesome solution and more people would check them out if the design trickles to other hub spacings. Thanks for the awesome videos, sharing your infectious positivity and humor!
broadfjord, I agree with ya 100% - the hooked flanges found on this hub are a game changer for building with Berd Spokes... I hope with enough demand, we'll start to see more options with these flanges, and the potential of buying the hubs seperately... I know I'd love to build a set of MTB wheels with Vespers and Berds... but with the rim of my choosing :) Ride on!

Like the wheels, the spokes I have wanted to try, but figured I will wait to see how many folks have them fail from getting cut by debris. I always wanted to run that silent rear hub but when you, me or anyone else drops 3k for a custom wheel build like envies the weight of the hub makes it counter productive as you have pointed out.
I know plenty that have been running Berd Spokes on mtb's in all kinds of tech terrain for a while now... feedback I get is they hold up as well or better than steel - I think I'll give them on the next set of mtb wheels I build... ride on!

As the wheelset they gave away at Fat Bike Nationals last year, probably the most Bomber set you can build. Will be curious to hear how they work long term.

DT swiss hubs + Sapim 2-1.8-2 spokes + Nextie rims 85 mm = 2000 grams, it seems that onyx hub pretty heavy.
yep, that setup is definitely a bit lighter than these... I know people with dt hubs, nextie xiphias, and berd spokes... smokin light - ride on :)

Great stuff, but if they're unable to be run under 8psi, that's a HUGE issue. I can't remember having my fatbike above 8psi in the winter, ever.
Fango925, great point... I know tons of people with HED carbon fatty rims, and everybody runs them way lower than 8... I know I'm rarely above 8 either :) I think HED just does that for liability/warranty reasons... but figured since there's a big old sticker on the rim, I should at least mention it in the video... ride on!!
They are not spokes they are cables, seeing that your hub "hanges down, from the top of the wheel " anyway, guess it should work. Good. After all many bridges, hang thousands of tons of concrete roads from them.
Berd spokes are a departure from conventional steel offerings, but spokes nonetheless. 12x strength to weight ratio of steel, great vibration dampening, uses standard nipples, feather light… what’s not to love? Other than $$ :) I’ll be building my next set of mtb wheels with them :) Ride on!

They will look amazing on my Mukluk… Not on my wallet. I usually ride in the 4-5 psi range 😢. Not for me.
Yep they'll look amazing on your Mukluk... Even though they don't recommend under 8psi, pretty much everyone does it anyway... but split tube or fatty strippers help from burping if consistently down in that low psi range... ride on!

No way-in-Hell am I paying over a grand for bicycle wheels. These are for gram-counting weenies. Those that obsess at dressing-up in spandex and showing-off their wealth by riding multi-thousand dollar rigs on weekends. I've had Nextie & HED carbon on my alloy Corvus. Both wheels fractured. the spoke nipples, broke through the rim in several places. And I was denied warranty claims. Wider rims seem to be a failure for heavy riders. Thin & cheap material, to keep the wheel weight low. Now I use a smaller diameter rim on the rear with a 3.8 tire inflated to the max. And a 29x2.8 for the front. Much better weight distribution for us over the 250 pound barrier.

Reason 1- Most fat bike rides are frugal in many ways,,, its way easier too save a few lbs on other things that are waaaaay less expensive... The majority of riders don't race... They are simple every-day riders that just get out there to enjoy the great out-doors...
Reason 2- $3800 hundred bucks is enough coin too use for outtings and trips threw out the year...
The saved coin allows us gas money to drive too riding areas,,, general repairs on our bikes,,, food and hanging out with our friends and family...
And many other things...
Hey,,,, the idea of high tech rims and hubs are great,,, but do the vast majority of fat bike riders need something like this...
Not really is my take...
Buy bike,,, rig it up for what We can afford,,, and enjoy being out there at our pace...
Keep it fun and frugal which allows us too enjoy many things in life...
Fat biking alone has knocked 5 too 7 lbs off my body which is free savings and my heavy bike gives me a workout that is part of the sport too begin with...
I dropped 2 teeth on the front sproket which gives my fat bike bull low low gear for climbing hills with next too nill of human watts...
Time and distance is irrelevant when fat biking...
They ride there pace as others ride theres...
We all end up at the same place at the end of the day...
My saved funds buy beers for the crew which is waaaaay more enjoyable...
