And he just won Unbound Gravel !
🎉🎉🙌🙌
Lachlan Morton has done so much for the sport of cycling... and he has done it with a grace and humor that is so rare these days. Thank you, brother!!
He sure has... thanks for watching and commenting :)
Wow! The data is impressive, but even more impressive is the work you put in to deliver this info. to us. You are without a doubt one of the best RUclipsr's out there and you always deliver it with no BS just good solid info. Thanks a bunch!
Thank you so much for your kind words!
Lachlan is already a legend whether his ITT record on the divide stands or not and I’m sure there’s more to come ! Such an inspiration for a rider that is my age. My knees are jealous !
😂 thanks for sharing - well said 🤙
WOW!!! I'm exhausted just listening to all those stats. Great job.
😂😂
Sheer brilliance as ever....thanks for the hard work putting this together. Your enthusiasm and sense of humour stands you from the crowd.
Wow, thank you! Appreciate the kind words 🙏
As a 76 year old -that was participating on the outskirts and in the increasing awareness of American endurance road cycling in early 70’s and 80’s- the efforts are now are astounding.
Thanks for sharing :)
His ability for recovery is ridiculous as well. Just a week later, he went to Chequamegon pro Lifetime Grand Prix race and got 23rd. Then a month later got 10th place at Big Sugar.
Most of us mortals would be done for the year after a Divide finish
Great points- thanks for sharing 🤙
I don't know how these guys do it. I rode 31 miles a few weeks ago and haven't even wanted to LOOK at my bike since then! Excellent video chock full of data. Bravo.
😂 thanks for sharing! Ride on :)
For me, the most impressive thing he did (if what was filmed was indeed a genuine act) was to clean up after himself by wiping the public bathroom floor down after he got it dirty, even though he appears hypothermic, as seen in 'The Divide' around min 27:05 to 27:15.
A persons character will live on longer and impact more people than an FKT ever will.
I agree 💯 - thanks for chiming in 🤙
WOW! Your effort here is on an immense level, suitable to the stupendous endeavour of Lachlan. Those figures were delivered in a series of breathless monologues that really synched with the subject matter. Chapeau.
Thank you very much!
This is the nerdiest and MOST usefully inspiring essay on ultra cycling! Thank you so much.
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for the time spent on the research! I dig it!
Thanks for keeping it real
Thanks, Wade!
This was fantastic! It shed all kinds of light on the Tour Divide. Love your videos!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks a ton Allan for creating this video. Lots of great insights here 🤗💕🐕
Glad you enjoyed - Ride on!!
Yes! Respect is all Lachlan deserves. He's a beast and a fabulous human being. Lachlan rode the miles and deserves the record. Film crew BS aside. He's a beast and congrats to him for crushing Unbound yesterday as well. Thanks for doing this. He's one of my favorite riders.
100% agree, thanks for watching and commenting :)
I’ve been away from riding for too long. Finally back and checking out some of my old favorite YT content. Your videos don’t disappoint! Thoroughness and passion for bikepacking is evident. Thanks for all that you do to promote cycling.
Thanks so much for the kind words! Ride on :)
Great video. Well presented and analyzed with no extra words. Lachlan is one tough cookie! Thank -you.
Boy is he ever... a tough cookie with a smiley, positive mindset :)
This is beyond impressive🔥👍🏼 Thanks for the detailed analysis!
Thank you for watching :)
Great video and stats. Unbelievable what a human is capable of on a bike. Inspires me for my July 5 start date of the divide
Best of luck and have a fantastic adventure out there!
Loved it, nice work DT
Thanks a ton!
Fantastic video. Thank you very much. Please provide another following this year's Tour. Fascinating content.
Will do my best!! Thanks :)
Thank you for the video. Fun to watch😊
Thank you for watching!!
Thank you very much for your efforts! Very interesting and useful 🙂
My pleasure! Thanks for watching :)
I’m from the Port Macquarie area and a couple of friends of mine have been involved in local rides which he participated in too. They said it was hilarious. They would be putting in maximum effort uphill, this guy would glide past like he was going downhill and calmly offer advice such as, lower or higher gear, would be better.
😂 he's a machine. He could match my FTP with a single leg. It makes you feel a little inadequate.
Haha! Love it :) thanks for sharing 🤙🤙
😂😂
Fantastic vid, bro - thanks v much.
This is super interesting analysis
Thanks for watching! Ride on 🤙
Thanks for the great video! While I’m not in their league, I gain a lot of inspiration from riders like Lachlan and Lael. It’s fun to ride their routs even if I’m not in FKT contention, it’s impressive how cheerful and enthusiastic they stay even when in the pain cave.
Thanks for sharing!! Well said 🤙
What a legend. Lachlan brings so much to Cycling; it's so fun to follow his stuff. Thanks for that nice breakdown video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm nearly 63 and Lachlan's my hero for multiple reasons. Firstly: we hail from the same area, ie Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. Secondly: he's such a great ambassador for our sport! Thirdly: he continues to think outside the box when it comes to taking on new challenges! Fourthly: I love his altruism! Fifth: he's just a cool, down to earth guy and now I regret not going over to him in Christchurch Airport in March and saying "Hi" (despite my wife encouraging me to!) and finally: he's one hell of a hardcore bike rider!!
Thanks so much for chiming in!! I appreciate you sharing this 🤙🤙
Bonkers! Stonking effort. Great overview. enjoyed that. 👍 Subscribed.
Thanks for watching :)
Wow. What a cool deep dive. I never would have done the research for this, but it was super fascinating!!
Glad you enjoyed it 🤙ride on !
What a legend of a rider!
Great job putting that video together, a lot of work there! ✌️
Much appreciated! Thanks for watching :)
Super interesting video. Thanks so much for getting all of that data and presenting it in a fun and interesting way. Its interesting the whole length of time riding and resting. But also being able to smash out 400 km in a day certainly helps get places quickly on a bike !!!! Love your work as always.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for commenting :)
Excellent video, Amazing stats!
Thank you kindly!
Thank you for taking the time to do the maths! Massive effort. Appreciate you!
Thanks for taking the time to watch :)
Very good video explaining his feat! 👍 Love your sleeping cat photo. 😺
😂 thanks so much :)
Dude, you are the best. Thank you for everything.
Thanks for your kind words! Ride on :)
Fabulous presentation. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Very interesting. Thanks for the breakdown
Thanks for watching :)
Mr. A - you be the Tour de Nerd ! Great, keep the data coming!
😂😂 thanks 🙏
Excellent work!
Thank you! Cheers!
Absolutely brilliant analysis!
Thanks!! 🙏
Awesome video. Thanks
Glad you liked it! Ride on!!
thank you very much for your fantastic work!!!
Thank you for watching :)
Excellent video! The man is super human in performance and being good person. He is definitely a person to look at for inspiration.
Absolutely! Thanks for watching and commenting :)
Great job Alan! This was so cool to see. I wish you had gotten this out 10 days ago-it would’ve been perfect to get me fired up before our GDMBR start on May 30th! Unfortunately Sally and I had to halt the ride north of Pie Town after she had a crash and broke her collarbone…darn it!
No! I’m so sorry to hear that!! Praying for a quick and full recovery and that Sally will be back to riding soon 🙏
Dude! Keep it coming.
Will do! Thanks for watching :)
great analysis of an epic ride. Chapeau to you Lachlan. Really an outrageous ride. Epic.
Thanks for watching and commenting :)
Another insightful video of an epic rid well done data points and conclusion
Thanks for your kind words :) ride on!
Phenomenal breakdown!!
Thanks for watching :)
Wow! Amazing video, I’m not a stats person but I couldn’t stop watching it, great job even though I have no idea what you just said 😂
I have no idea what I said either 😂 ride on!!
Like before start watching the video because I know this is good stuff! Cheers from Norway 🇳🇴
😂😂 thanks!!
Great video!
Thanks 🙏
Great work - I dot-watched at the time & was blown away by Lachlan's ability to ignore accepted wisdom and stick to his strategy with the stunning outcome. I had also dot-watched Joe Nation's 3rd place behind Ulrich in '23 and noted his longer stops (4.5hr+ was common) & higher moving speed. Maybe this strategy will become more popular for future editions of the grand depart?
It’ll be fun to see this year unfold for sure!!
WOW!! WHAT a report!! DAYUMN!! A NY AND ALL the data anyone would want or need!! I was just in Hatchita yesterday and found the mini market is open til 10pm at night the young lady yesterday was soo friendly and helpful!! Good luck to all doing the 2024 version!!
Thanks for watching and commenting- ride on!!
Brilliant !
Thanks!
Well done Alan!
Thanks!
Outstanding and great for cycling I hope he keeps it up. I never met him but he seems like a good person
I agree! Would love to chat with him over a beer one of these days :)
Loved the video, and I'm definitely in your camp re the Whereabouts series, and Portuguese women. Shame you're not riding the TD this year.
😂😂 thanks for sharing! Are you riding the TD this year? If so, have a fantastic adventure!!
My pleasure. Yep, currently in Banff ready for the TD. Lots of Kiwis doing it again this year. And, thank you.
Hi. Great video. I did some similar calcs but there was a gap in Lachlan's data on Strava that was missing between just after Platoro and Abuquiu.
After making some estimates based on the terrain and other factors for that, i wound up with 202 hours 38 minutes of moving time. Average pace of 21.31kph. This gave me 16 hrs 11.5 minutes of moving time per day.
Thanks for the info!
That was some interesting jibberish Brudda..always great to watch along
Miss ya man! 🤙
really cool!
Thanks 🤙
Great video. Love the start to put down the haters
Thanks for watching and commenting :) Ride on!
Cut you some slack?? We love you, your videos and def Lachlan! Best physics, math, science lesson ever.
😂 thanks for the kind words!! They keep me going 🤙
Outstanding Alan ! Is there much difference in weather between the early June Grand depart and August ?(that rain/mud can slow you down so much)
Different every year of course - but GD tends to be wetter/ snowier/ muddier / slower up north - but August tends to be monsoonish and brutally hot in southern CO and NM… so ITT’s in August/Sept may be a little faster if lucky with weather, but def no picnic… ride on!!
Appreciate the breakdown. Curious your thoughts on the use of an electronic derailleur on this type of ride. He was having rear derailleur issues at least as early as day 7.
Definitely pros and cons to both electronic vs mechanical- I know lots of folks successfully using both sram and Shimano electronic for big bikepacking races, TD, etc- with zero issues - I think Lachlan just had bad luck, and yes, seemed like mechanic at orange peel noticed there was an issue too. IMO, on TD, benefits of blips / remote shifter pods on aerobars and less finger strength needed for shifting is nice. I recently did AZT 300 with mechanical, and my right shifting thumb still has nerve issues… I’ll be switching to electronic for CTR … anyhoo, thanks for watching- ride on!
excellent timing given what he did at Unbound yesterday. Speaking of TSS, did you see Lael's for the first week of her Around the World?
No I haven't... but I'll look now - thanks!
Congrat Lacky for taking the W in Unbound today! Couldn't think of a better guy to take that one.
💯
He's an amazing & humble rider ..as always an informative video 👏🥳. Ps check out him riding GB Duro 2019... again an awesome 2000km ride
Thanks for adding that 👍 I could’ve made a whole video just listing his accolades :) ride on!!
Reminds me of Jacques Boyer on the RAAM. Challenging the conventions of sleep deprivation. Just be really really fast so you have time to sleep.
Thanks for chiming in 🤙
Met him on ride, my place, they call me trail angel giving water cooler at road. Pretty cool guy & went on his record ride.
Thanks for sharing :)
Great video, congrats! You might like to check your dietary energy intake data again. I think the kJ to calorie calculation is a bit faulty.
I answered this question for someone else… if you’re thinking it is 1 to 4.184 don’t forget to factor in the 25% for metabolic efficiency which brings it to 1.046… or pretty much 1 to 1- google trainerroad kilojoules to Calories blog for more info 🤙 ride on !
wow, thanks for this rundown here. also, thanks form the tire building show last week. you offer a lot to think about, and inspire new plans.
Glad you enjoyed it! Ride on :)
Keep an eye out for my buddy Alex Schultz this year as he does the triple crown. Last year he won the AZT 800 and set a new FKT beating Lael Wilcox’s time.
I’ll definitely have my eyes on Alex :) Ulrich Batholomoes is also doing the triple crown 🤙 I’m also working on a video analyzing Austin’s new FKT of the AZT 800 - stay tuned…
Yeah a deep dive into Unbound would be cool
Workin on it 🤙
You need to be a freak of nature! Very few have an engine like him.
He’s definitely a gifted rider! Thanks for sharing :)
To make it easier for you English speakers: Ullrich goes by Uba, and that is fine for him.
I really like those comparisons a lot. And I think the best approach would try to get a motel about an hour after sunset and start again at sunrise. Of course that is not possible in the mountains, but Lachlan was close.
But in the end you can’t compare different years, routes, weather, kinds of support, and so on. It would be interesting to see Uba, Lachlan and maybe Sofiane and Joe Nation in one grand depart.
But in the end they all are doing great work. I was so smashed after 32h, 10.000 feet of elevation gain and less than 100miles with roughly the same amount of gear.
Thanks for sharing 🙏 ride on!
And now he is underway winning Unbound.
What a ride at Unbound 🤙
Definitely super human.. physical and mental strength to endure and still maintain top level performance is incredible.
💯 thanks for commenting :)
Dude you got the Zwift front lift how you like that? Ok back to focusing on this video you created.
Haha I love the kickr climb 🤙
Ace - you need to have an interview now with LM
I'd love to sit down for a beer with him and get fired up on some adventures :) ride on!
That was really interesting. I weigh double his weight, 120kg 😂 I found the good sleep aspect very interesting, and his low zone 2 riding.
Thanks for sharing! Ride on :)
In the UK a guy called Tommy Godwin in 1939 rode 205 miles every day for a year....and then went off to war.....now let that sink in 😮
Impressive!
Mike Hall Forever
100% ride on!!
Thank you, sir, for such a nice and very highly interesting with great quality of your report, that you are excellently sharing! Stay blessed and many friendly greetings from Sweden!💯👍👌🙏💖
Thank you very much for your kind words 🙏
Ovando, MT in 2 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes. That is just insane.
Maybe Lachlan did us all a favor, I hear Mike Lee has taken out KoKo Claim so that records will be comparable. 😂
😂 thanks for watching and sharing :)
@@DirtyTeethMTB What I really need to know is what ‘food bag’ was Lachlan using that he just through over his shoulder?
@@Michael-rz7ic good question… not sure exactly which one he had, but the sea to summit ultra sil is a popular one… ride on!
TL:DR: He rode WAY faster than all the other top guys (his avg. speed while riding was about 30% faster than the other top guys!) - perhaps largely due to Lachlan's better skill of riding efficiently - since his power wasn't that much higher
Thanks for commenting
I am not sure about your Kilojoule calculation. I think it might be kcal, because 8900kJ would be about 2200kcal, which is just slightly about average for a normal pencil pusher. If you are a tall pencil pusher that would be below your resting food consumption. To convert kcal into KJ you have to multiply by 4.18 (the specific heat capacity of water).
Otherwise thanks for the great and interesting run-down of the race.
kJ’s are coming straight from Lachlan’s head unit data and Cals burned to produce 1 kJ are 1 to 1.045 ratio… roughly 1 to 1… your formula is forgetting last step to divide 4.184 by .25 to account for body’s 25% of metabolic efficiency - google: trainerroad blog kJ to Calories conversion - it’ll help explain- thanks for watching🤙
@@DirtyTeethMTB Thanks for the correction. I did miss that it was about actually performed work here, you hardly ever see kJ used in that sense, though it is actually the correct unit.
For my head-arithmetric I always use the estimation of 1kJ performed work equals 1kcal of food.
I am wrong -> This was calculated by google kj to kcal
Just a heads up for Europe Viewers the Cal Numbers are not kcal -> 8993 kj = 2149 kcal (which is quiet low for a full day ride ...)
What math formula are you using to arrive at that? Maybe not factoring in .2-.25 for GME? Here’s a link to what what I use and why… Cal to kJ numbers should be roughly 1 to 1 (1 to 1.045), no? If it’s different in Europe, that’s news to me, so thanks for sharing - www.trainerroad.com/blog/calories-and-power/
@@DirtyTeethMTB I am not deep into this, so I might have made a rooky mistake but just for reference my cycling computer reports (25km) 5373kj and the same route will be 1090kcal on strava ... (100g Chocolate Dark = 2452kj / 590kcal)
ok i see the Strava of Lachlan Morton hast kj = kcal then my Cycling Computer is measuring something different and it makes more sense now
I'm a big LM fan, but honestly I think this video says more about Uba's attempt than him. Both first timers on the divide, LM probably got worse weather overall but didn't have to spend hours in a toilet 🤣 ultimately he's got the engine and is a very intelligent rider of these long events. But listening to you go through the numbers, I think it's more impressive what a non pro can achieve even if it's not the fastest
Thanks for watching, and I really enjoy this comment- I too was super impressed with UB and Justinas for that matter (to catch back up after his issue) but even more so after putting this video together… like you said… rookie, non-pro, has a day job, and the threesome in the porta john :) - and still almost caught back up to the record pace… 💯 rockstar! Ride on :)
@@DirtyTeethMTB they are such strong riders. It shows what you can do as an amateur. But they could take a leaf out of Lachy and Joe Nation's book and get their head down for a good sleep and I recon they would be pushing similar power numbers to what we saw from Lachy. Its crazy how these guys can ride for 17hrs with less than 2hrs of faff time. Especially when Lachy sits down to beer and pickles at the gas station!
What’s on Alan’s cap? An upside down state?
It’s the state of Idaho (where I live) ride on :)
Congrats to Lachlan "wrong turn" Morton for winning Unbound 200 today!
😂 indeed :)
Wow - thanks for this great effort at summarizing this epic endurance event! Lachlan is the evolution of human performance 🎭.
Thanks for watching and commenting :) ride on!
The weather, the weather, the weather, of course it is an impressive ride and worthy of the title fastest supported ITT but don't say it is the fastest Tour Divide time, that is a race in June when there is often still snow on Red Meadow Pass to name just one. Look at last June's nightmare in the Basin which I think backs up what I am saying even further.
Thanks for sharing, and valid points worth mentioning 👍 everyone has bad weather and of course it varies year to year, month to month… Lachlan beat Uba’s time by 36+ hours with a broken derailleur for last couple of days and plenty of his own peanut butter mud ( and more heat in southern CO and NM) - pick your poison :) and to clarify: the Grand Depart is in June… but the Tour Divide race can be officially done anytime you want - ITT’s that follow the rules are equally as valid as GD times… which is why Lael Wilcox’s 2015 ITT is considered the current female record. One can also argue that it’s easier to set an FKT when you’re racing others at the GD… something to be said about the motivation of other dots/competition vs just a clock… thanks again for joining the conversation 🙌
I like the film crew ban.. rules are rules
Thanks for watching and commenting :)
imagine smashing the record and having a 57 mile day
Right?
And he wins Unbound 200!
Pretty impressive 🤙🙌
I don't really understand while bikepacking is all about sleep deprivation instead of enjoying being outside in the nature. Maybe I don't have a racer's appetite.
Thanks for sharing :) Ride on!
This video started at the 5 minute mark.
Thanks for watching
Climbing Uluru is disrespectful
Thanks for sharing :) 35 years ago, when I was there, it was "normal" to climb it, and I had no clue about the origins... they were still calling it Ayers Rock, etc...and I was a 10 year old kid, who would climb on anything... but knowing what I know now, I'd never disrespect the Anangu
