    Great video. Great tips. For my TD23 I did one thing I never saw anyone else do, and it is a classic through hiker move, and that is cold soaking. I don't know why more TD racers don't cold soak. I rigged up a modified water bottle cage to hold my 1 litre GSI Fairshare mug. It fully seals with a legit rubber gasket. Every evening, or late in the day I would put 2 packages of cheap ramen noodles in and by the time I stopped to sleep, they would be ready to eat. They generally only need 20 minutes. Then before bed I dumped 5 packets of instant oatmeal into the container to scarf down while packing up in the morning. I managed to cram in more calories at bedtime and in the morning than the other riders I rode with. For shorter races I usually cold soak using ziplock bags. Oh, and a good spoon or spork are a must have for me. Oatmeal and ramen noodles are in most convenience stores. ANd it feels sort of like real food.

    Great video. I’m a Randonneur and often eat at Gas Stations. After watching this I have an urge to go to 7-11 for breakfast 😂
    Also very well written. Top tube pantry and drafting on the intelligence of others. I’m going to use those.

    A couple of things:
    String cheese is good.
    I often find cashews, macadamia nuts, and beef jerky in resealable ziploc bags to be a good thing. If only because you can reuse the empty bag for trash or other stuff.
    The caffeinated Clif Bars, if you can find them, are an awesome emergency food. One of them is usually good for about three hours of motion.
    Lemon drops are good quick energy.

    Hey DT, KW MD here. Love the lowdown on PO intake for the TD. This is the best instruction on high density caloric intake for long distance endurance bikeletes I’ve heard. I’ve given the glycemic index speech to hundreds of patients. Great job! While food choices are often limited, on the Trans Am and GDMBR I fell in love with Minute Market food, supplemented by cafe food. There’s a surprising diversity of tastes, flavors and textures. I’m not a racer, and a little more weight - tolerant, but I always plan a little extra bag space for takeaways… Subway, pizza, fried chicken, hohoes, fruit pies. If I come home > 6-7 pounds lighter, I know my calorie intake ( and likely pedaling performance) suffered. Thanks again. You gave a good didactic nutritional background with lots of practical food suggestions without geeking out on the biochemistry of exercise and starvation. Perfect!

    Allen, your always so informative. I completed the upper 1/2 of the TD and this summer will start in Steamboat Springs to ride to Antelope Wells. Then the next year I will ride the entire thing. My summers only have so much time to do these things. Next summer I am retired and can go till I want to finish. Keep your posts coming. I have watched them all. Ride on Allen!

    Such a good video. I’ll be watching this one over and over. Salt packs are good with some warm water for an oral rinse or toothpaste tablets w tea tree oil help ward off oral sores.

    I just got into bike touring & racing late last year but been a thru hiker for the last 5 years coming from that to this definitely helps and makes it kinda easy i did WV to FL on the eastern divide this winter I’m doing 3,000 miles on different routes this year and the tour divide next year , this year is all training and getting the rig built while checking off routes also a bilateral amputee, just saying if you have a dream do it don’t put it off , life is all about experiences

    I'm always checking the "calories per 100g " value on stuff here in the UK. My go to is jelly babies, walnuts, raisins, cheese and mini pork pies. Yum. The main reason I want to get into ultra endurance is for the excuse to binge on crap food .. ✊

    I understand that pemmican is a good source of trail calories, there are many videos on it's home based manufacture.
    This is something that I need to learn as well.

    Just subbed you. Great info. Remember bonking once.......was enough. Want to do this next year 2025. Have been a part time cyclist over the past 60 years so not too bad of shape but need to start ramping it up and getting my training in order for fueling, etc.. Remember giving out on only one occasion in 112 deg heat almost made it back home on a 133 miler. I am a gluten for punishment and 98% of time will not quit but that one day scorched me. The info you gave out is quite condensed so at least offers up many good info tp sort out out and add to a list to be gone through gradually before the date I intend on doing the divide ride.

    Love your videos! And your replies are never snarky which is hero level. I’ll be “touring” the ride this summer and can afford the luxury of store shopping thankfully. Btw I know that are probably the most processed food imaginable but I really like carrying Uncrustables (peanut butter jelly frozen round sandwiches) .. that are easy to eat in the bike .. and fit as a stack in feed bags perfectly !

    I always have baby food with me during rides. They are all organic, don’t expire for a year, super easy to digest, don’t get smashed in your pocket and are about 80 cents each…

    I’m betting we don’t see many vegans on this route. I recently did the Erie Canal Trail in NY and this man is absolutely correct… A C-store attached to a gas station was an oasis.

    Allen thanks so much for putting this video together! I'm just breaking into bikepacking and this is the kind of information that's gold for a person like me. Question: how did you estimate how many calories you could process per hour? If I wanted to estimate this for my own body, any tips or resources you recommend to do that?

      Thanks for your kind words :) great question… answer, trial and error and making mistakes is how I’ve learned how my body reacts to caloric bombardment… and it’s always ebbing and flowing… I didn’t get into it in this video, because it was TD/gas station focused- but whenever possible, I take in lots of calories via high carb drink powder (tailwind, sis, gu, etc) in my water… and has electrolytes too… ride on!

    Great advice. Chocolate milk is my #1 choice when racing so glad to see you mention it. I get 3 litres at the end of the day. I drink one before bed, the second over the night, and the third for breakfast. Calories and hydration in one package! My #2 choice are almond Magnum ice creams. My record was 8 in one day: it was 40C+ in Turkey on the last day of the Transconinental Race and it was all I could stomach.

    I had a lot of pop-tarts and honeybuns during my race in 2015. Lots of carbs, and calorically dense. Subway flatbreads were in constant rotation as well. I hit diners whenever possible and open hours matched up. Plenty of burgers, fries and a beer if handy. Candy bars, although they were hard to deal with many due to the heat. I did have some simple sugars (swedish fish, sour patch kids, etc) but I was really worried about sugar crashes for some reason, so I used those as a treat rather than a steady source of calories
    I was still down about 20 lbs by the time I hit Antelope Wells. Post race, I was really craving fruit, especially blueberries and peaches for some reason.

    I've had to start finding foods that I can snack on that don't require a lot of chewing while riding, or if I do, I have to take very small bites at a time. I started subscribing to Picky Bars and will jam as many of those things in my bags as I can. I love chocolate, but it always ends up being a complete mess in my bags - I have to eat it right at the store. Having dental floss handy is awesome for so many reasons, but being able to get that one pesky piece of jerky out of my teeth is such a mental bonus sometimes. "Miranda Goes Outside" here on YT did a great video on making your own gummies using electrolyte drink mix ("Backpacking Gear You Can Make at Home!").

    My quick observation on more than half of what makes a good ultra athlete is that you are able to process calories and foods that aren't always "perfect" as stated in the video. I top out on 9-10hr rides max, but that's normally 90% Infinit (450 cal/hr @215#) and every other hour a fig or granola bar. If I eat nuts or high fat foods, things, things are not good...The issues I've always had for long rides are nutrition strategies and I've tried a ton. I will keep trying things to dial it in, I'm only 26yrs old now and have been doing longer rides for only 2 seasons now, so there's still much to learn. Good info, I will try to apply some of this to some of my longer rides.

    I heard one year on the TD some guy would buy like ten maccers cheese burgers and chomp on them for a few days….lovely cold burger….i get it though having done quite a few long rides…ohh and i prefer gas stations as it’s safer to leave the bike and quicker to grab some junk food 🤗🥳

    Thanks for discussing a topic that I've only seen snippets from other videos. Great presentation!
    I'm interested in seeing this type of video on the subject of issues one encounters when riding in the open country, no tree cover, and you suddenly have to go to the restroom. This may not be a big concern when you're out in desolate area, but if you find yourself near well traveled roads, which don't offer much privacy. Obvious solutions are found in businesses, hotels, campgrounds. My concern is those unfortunate times when timing of not the best.
    One other topic I've looked for is for bike/gear security when you're traveling solo. Do you take your bike and electronics into a business with you. All it takes is one thief to end your tour!

      I have ridden with a hydro pack that has pockets on the waistband. I kept my [very small] wallet on one side and put my phone in the other. I locked up the bike with a very thin cable combination lock to prevent the opportunistic thief. I figured if someone did take the bike, at least with the wallet and phone I could get myself home.

      Neil/bikepacking.com made a good video on security - you should check it out - there’s a few deterrent hacks we do, pulling chain off the cassette, strapping helmet thru spokes, etc, small cable locks, short stop times, rolling bike inside the store, etc I’m away from a computer so don’t have the link, but should be easy to find… ride on and thanks for watching!!

      having a filthy bike loaded with tons of weird-looking junk might also dissuade them :)@@DirtyTeethMTB For big grocery stores if it isn't busy I ask them very politely if I can park it inside. The workers normally don't care. It's not their store - they work for a giant corporation.

    Hungry now. Some additional things to consider….protein reduces the intake of carbs….you can train your stomach to digest more carbs…food in the belly is not the same as energy in the blood.

    I'm sincerely amazed at how Americans don't have gut issues ingesting gobs of oily nut butter and junk food.
    As an Asian, I'd prefer 7-Eleven Onigiri or Japanese microwave pasta. But that's the United States for you.

      Who says they don't? Stomach issues are really common in ultra cycling. And even if you're eating very clean, the constant activity paired with eating quite a bit can easily upset your stomach.

      Can't compare Japan 7 and USA 7. The quality is so different. I wish all US 7s would be more "healthy" like Japan. I agree I can't stomach many things in US convenient stores. Gotta find a way though!

    +1 on avoiding real groceries stores on the road. There’s nothing worse than trying to find food in a stores you don’t know the layout. Just awful

      Re grocery stores, at a slow touring pace, older Divide rider, I focus on Ramen or Knorr packs, tuna or chicken foil packs, cheese, milk, some fruit, trail mix nuts, cookies and head back to the bike. This year I'm using panniers for better food carry.

      True if you spend all day sitting in your mom's basement making snarky comments to youtube videos, but when Alan is working hard 24/7 in a calorie deficit his body's response to sugar is much different.

      @@oldanslo I'm just here for the algorithm mate. You have to admit, the TD is a pretty bonkers event. Between the food, physical exertion, sleep deprivation and things that will eat you, it's amazing anyone finishes at all.

    That travel diet of yours is horrendous, if only you were able to develop a menu plan that could be duplicated as needed and then stashed along the race route to be retrieved during your high speed passing by.
