  • Beginners guide to tying the Perdigon Nymph, by a beginner. I've caught so many fish with this fly and have a lot of people new to fly fishing or tying ask me about this fly so I put this video together. You don't have to be a great tier to catch fish - and it's a blast to catch fish on something you tied! I hope you give it a try - let me know in the comments if you do.
For the experts out there - I know I made tons of mistakes - this was to inspire others to give it a try.
To get straight to the tying - skip to about 3:20 of the video.
What I used to tie this Olive Perdigon:
    Hook: Hanak 450BL size 16
Bead: Copper 2.0 mm tungsten bead (I often use Brass color as well - I usually use brass in 2.5, 3.0, and 3.2 mm beads)
Tail: Coq de Leon, medium pardo
Body: UTC 70 thread - Olive
Ribbing: UTC Ultra Wire - Gold, size Small
Collar: UTC 70 Thread - Fl. Orange
Wing Case: Black Nail Polish (Sally Hansen Insta-Dri) you can use a black sharpie, too)
The finish is: UV Clear Fly Finish
And for beginners, you will need a UV light to shine on it to cure it.
Both the UV Finish and UV Flashlight I used were from Loon.
I hope this helps - AND you have a ton of fish on! Tight lines!

I’ve been tying my own flies for years and wouldn’t do it on camera. Flies don’t have to be works of art to catch fish. I admire your desire to share building a fly you love with us. Thanks.

You've got the spirit, mate... and that is the most important thing. But please don't cut the tips of the Coq de Leon, they are so beautiful, instead start fixing them with a couple of loose wraps while keeping them much longer than you like, then pinch the butts with your fingers and pull them towards the eye of the hook, slowly, until you see you've got the length you like, then you can add tighter wraps. Anyway, you're on the right path. Subscribed!

Hi WCC. Nice work. I don't currently tie but the perdigon will be the first I try following your instructions. Something I have seen other tyers do, they show the thread spool label of they are using (just like you did with the Loon UV). Mother Nature does not draw in straight lines.....sometimes imperfection is perfect (referring to your black fly). Tight lines.

Thanks! Would love to hear if you end up tying and how it works for you. Thx for the tip on showing the labels - I'll remember for future videos - appreciate the helpful comment! Cheers :)

Beginner just like you. Enjoyed the video. You’re much better than I am... Really want to tye this kind of fly. One question: do you spin the tread clockwise or counter clockwise? It looks like you did both. Maybe it doesn’t matter, hey? Canada here 🇨🇦

You spin it counter clockwise - it flattens the thread out so you can lay down a smoother layer. Thanks for watching and appreciate the comments! Love Canada....I have spent many days at Whistler and Big White! Tight lines!
