Nik, I just love your approach to a creative life! I'll bet Rit would be proud to have you as a spokesperson/demonstator. I am in Santa Clarita, 30 miles north of L.A. and it is HOT! We had all that rain last winter and we are still living with the water evaporating off of the mountains. So, last week we were in the 100's with cloud covered skies. 100 today and foggy. It's like Ohio!!! So thanks for this cool break!
I found the Sherman High School 1916 yearbook, The Athenian, online! The high school is located in Sherman, TX. You can view every page if you want to see the people whose pics were cut out 😆
So Cal here....blazing hot and we had all our rain last winter. Good time to fool around with dye.....Inside! You are a delight and I think your ribbon is pretty.
I like how they turned out. The strips have a grungy look to me. A fun project to try while staying indoors out of the Texas heat. Ugh. I heard you talk about your trip to Dallas. I should be used to it but I’m not. 😅
"It's giving 1970's green Tupperware salad bowl." I really should NOT be drinking anything when I watch your videos, I lost count of how many times I almost spit out my morning coffee. LOVE those books!!! 🙂
Hi Nik. I broke my tooth at breakfast today!! Thanks for reminding me I need to call my dentist. Great experimentation, the green Tupperware brought back memories.
I remember that Tupperware bowl very well, it perpetually stayed in our refrigerator, sometimes with a decent salad inside, other times, well... not so decent. I like the color of your dyed cloth and ribbon. Yep, I do.
Omg guess what I've been doing this last week? ........ Instead of dye I've been us watered down acrylic paint to dye some old cotton bedsheets to make ribbon and some fabric for book covers Fabulous colour Nik love your videos ❤❤❤❤
I would love to read the John Calvin book! Ugh, almost 10 pm here and we’re just now getting down to 85 degrees..it’s been so hot and humid. Not bad, if you enjoy chewing the air you breathe…🥵
This was just what I needed to start my day as I wait for the pain pills to kick in. Maybe it’s my screen, but I loved them both. It’s hot here in Georgia day and night. I sympathize with the construction noise. My neighborhood is 20 years old, so repairs are pretty constant and almost everyone has a lawn service on a different day. Wow the pills make me chatty even in print.😁
I just choked on my graham cracker when you mentioned the seventies Tupperware Green Bowls. I still have the nesting set of two. The lids look horrible from the microwave but are still functional. Now, I feel there should be a tribute journal made to celebrate their long service in the kitchen regardless of their unappetizing color. 😂 I'm totally cracking up! You could make an hour long video of paint drying entertaining and hilarious. :)
I'm doing great, thanks so much for asking. Yeah things are good, it's my birthday on Sunday, having lunch with friends, and eBay sales seem to have picked up. Life is good.
I'm glad you dye with actual dye. I cringe when I see people make gorgeous ribbons with water reactive ink pads. I made that mistake and ended up with color bleeding later. It was such a bummer!
Well, we were very happy that it's only going to be 100 for the week. lol! We've had 106 to 113 for the previous week and a half...that was flat heinous! I liked you winging it, the best stuff always happens in experiments!
Ooooh, please rebind the cookery book! It's been really hot'n'humid here. "It's not the heat, it's the humidity. " Now we're getting bad storms rolling through overnight. I really don't want to spend the night in the basement...
What a wonderful gifts of the antique books! Yes, it's hot here in the Arizona Desert! We are hoping for monsoon season which will cut the heat. Fun to watch your mad scientist of colors play! I like the results!
I've never used RIT Dye to change the color of Fabric, but I have A LOT of different types of white materials that I'd love to color up! Thank You for The Motivation!!! ~🙏💙🙏Much Graditude From The Carolinas🙏💙🙏~
your gifted books are fabulous! lucky you! Also I like both the muslin and the rayon ribbon dyed….different textures and fabric, therefore different results. I dye quite a bit of the rayon ribbon using procion dyes. It’s addicting 😊
OMG Nik...You wouldn't even believe how friggin POIGNANT this video was for me today! UGH!! Thank god I am not alone! We are on the exact same wavelength, my friend! ...I am laughing and crying hysterically! That's it...I'm gonna find some sh*t to dye right now, and have fun making a big mess, cause I am already in the dog house. I feel like I'm Thelma, looking for a Louise! CHEERS TO YOU NIK! TFS! Lil hugs xo
I love the old books. And I love the ribbon. Maybe you can tea dye them to make them look older and more grungy. I really want to try dying some ribbon now. Thanks for being inspiring.
I love to read old cook books. I find some of the terms used in them to be interesting. I noticed that red embossed book. It would make a lovely cover for a junk journal. LOL. I've had a bit of a trying day. I helped a friend get her printer set up yesterday. I got a call to help again this afternoon. Got a gut feeling that I'm going to be getting many more calls. I don't know why I do it to myself. She's had the printer for months and I thought that if I got it setup, that would be enough. It never is.
Girl, it never is. I have a sneaking suspicion that printers do what they do to deliberately drive humans to madness. They intend to take over the world. Just don't let on that you know! 🤫
@@NiktheBooksmith my old (15yrs) printer died, bought a new “all in one” but it has been there in it’s box for months now. The dread of setting it up, removing my trusty old canon, and the scanner… I’m old and even though i used to be the go to in electronic stuff, I’ve settled well with what i had till the world marched ahead… now I’m lost and my grandchildren raise their eyes when i ask a question “how can you not know this gran?”look. Nik, i bought a few of your mini books and went to staples to get them printed! Yes the printers of the world are uniting! 😄🤷♀
Yes we've had a lot of hot weather here in Indiana and tonight we were supposed to have a bad storm warning and rains it would bring down the temperatures. All I've seen and heard it thunder and lightning but no downpours yet! That's not good LOL
I liked the cotton ribbons: I think it they would look great on an ocean themed junk journal/project. You can glue some sand/rocks on the ribbon for color contrast. The rayon ribbon would look great in a floral/forest themed project.
If you wet the fabric first and spray the dye, it will diffuse and blend better. If you spray direct on dry the dye will grab and sit and have more definition. At least that’s what happens when I use Procion dyes on natural fabrics. Great video. Thanks for sharing! Be well.
Oh to feel 68 degrees! Here in the Phoenix area we’ve hit a record: it’s been over 110 degrees for at least 28 days in a row. It’s 8:45 pm here right now, and it’s 108 degrees! UGH!
It keeps fluctuating between 17 and 24 Celsius in the UK. But its the the humidity that makes it feel worse. So we have a mix of half a day hot dry and half hot rain. Another day hot muggy, then more hot rain. Occasionally it cools down in the morning before going hot again. Blagh. Give me cooler weather thanks. Garden is over growing into a wild meadow, but we can't get out to maintain it due to the erratic weather. However nowadays our winters are not cold. I want proper seasons back, but unfortunately that won't happen in my lifetime nor future generations. Why do humans gave to so dumb? Erghh. Never mind, can't change things now. That was a lovely collection of books. I'm going through my books currently and trying to give away as many to charity as I can. Blooming hard as I'm a book hoarder. Some books were easy to give away, but the rest is harder to part with. I only have limited bookshelf space and I really can't leave all my books in piles on the floor. I recently found I have a lot of colouring books, untouched, so I'm scanning them a bit of a time onto my computer. Once done I can then give the books away to some one else. I thankfully have back ups of back ups for what I save on my computer. My plan is to print off any lineart I want then rip them up to make collages for me to either paint over or cover with layers of patterned tissuepaper. 😊
So funny. I have a dentist appointment next week, so this was perfect! I absolutely hate the dentist, am scared to death of her, so this was a nice distraction!
4:05 I don’t remember what that process is called, but it has to do with when the book was bound, the pages were not cut until after. It caused the leading edges of the pages as well as the upper and lower margins to be uneven. Also, you’ll notice that the text block sometimes shifts orientation on books with this page unevenness.
Hey there Nik, my mother had that "lettuce bowl" with the thing inside that you stabbed your lettuce head onto, LoL. As for how I'm doing, I am recovering some what from an intense stabbing pain between my left shoulder blade and backbone that radiated down my left arm to my elbow. This has been since July 1rst. The Dr (loosely called) thinks muscle spasm but is more interesting in my blood sugar & colesteral levels than my PAIN level. Yikes 😳. And that office call ($$$$) was on the 5th. But I'm doing okay considering. 68 degrees sounds good to me. We are pretty hot here, but at least for now we are not in the 100 degree plus temperature (in the shade)😮. I think about you all the time, which always reminds me to pray for others much more than for myself. Take care young lady ❤️ and God bless you and yours. Sincerely Becky B from Arkansas
Hi from Germany! 😊 Do you do anything to the books before you use them as a junk journal? I mean like brush baking soda on it or leave it in a plastic bag on a warm place? I've seen a video the other day where the lady highly recommended to do that because of mold and fungus. What do you think about it?
Hi Nick, this has nothing to do with marbling paper, but it’s something I’ve been wanting to ask for a long time. Do you have a video on how to make the bands that go across the spine of a book???? also, does the book need to be covered in leather to do this???? Can you have bands, say, on a cloth covered book???? I hope that makes sense. I have learned so much from your podcast,I’ve gone back and watched a lot of of them. I couldn’t find one on this particular subject though. thank you!🙏😊❤️
Hi Nik! Do you have any advice/tips on adding pages into an already-made text block? I want to add divider pages into a notebook, could I just add the pages and glue the spine as if it was a regular, glued text block? Thanks!!
Great video! Can I ask how you set up your camera to show your perspective without impeding what you can see or getting your head in the shot? I always wonder with videos like these.
Hi Elizabeth! I have a couple set-ups, one is an overhead contraption that my husband built and the other one I got on Amazon. If you want to check out the different types of overhead mounts, click on the link to my Amazon favorites lists under this video, there should be a few on the Tools list. It all depends on the type of camera you'll be using. Some mounts are for lightweight recording devices like phones or webcams and others are more robust for full-sized cameras and such. I hope that helps you a bit! =)
Maybe a tiny spritz of bleach? Or a tiny spritz of some kind of distress ink, liiiiike..... Vintage photo? What do you think the sales ratio of Vintage Photo is to any of the other colors? 😄
Was that your voice during the lava lamp segment? That voice sounded like she who will not be named in our home (Alexa). That original green color was lettuce keeper green. Also surgical scrubs green. It also has a feminine hygiene vibe (I don’t know why). I think you got the recipe right. Now you can make a tab journal. Have fun!
No one wants to change you. We love you just the way you are 💛 and we’re here for all of you great projects and experiments ⭐️
