    Wrap coat is a classic. Love the ankle length pant and sleeveless tops with ballet flats and sneakers. White and black t shirts look classic with blue jeans... Levis and Lee jeans always look great on women with the cuff up or rolled up to the mid calf with sneakers and a hoodie sweatshirt. Cardigans are classic when worn as a tippet around the shoulder as a scarf or layered with a blazer. Looks great with wellies and a trench coat or a shiny rain slicker. Cute florals always play up spring and plaid makes winter fashions fun. Black riding boots are always classic. Shirt dresses and polo dresses are timeless and a basic boat neck shift will carry you through seasons, year after year. Classic, not trends, make a wardrobe.

      For me as a German the terms Sloan Ranger and Preppy are unknown. I do however recognize a certain style in the fashion of Ali McGraw in Love Story. Actually I knew a girl in the 1970s who looked like her and wore similar clothes. She also had that natural hairstyle, hardly any make up and bushy eyebrows.
      I would have called this style (elegant) college girl look.... :--))
      Lady Di has quite a different style I think. More colour, more pattern, more embellishments.
      So I would prefer Ali's look, because I think you are on the safer side with her fashion.
      Thanks so much to you, Beth, all your explanations are very interesting.
      Compliments from Germany!

    • @maryokeefe5351
      @maryokeefe5351 3 года назад

      @@elisabethlinz4256 Preppy comes from prep (college preparatory) schools in the US. Sloane Square is a posh neighbourhood in London where Diana and her set hung out. Diana was a real trail-blazer in fashion, just like Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Curious who the German fashion icons are? I love German designers, such great quality and cut. There must be some very well-dressed women in Germany?

      Mary, I am so amazed that you took the time and explained the unknown words to me. Thank you very much... how nice of you! The Sloan word is a real insider term as I can see now.
      German fashion has the reputation to be of solid quality.... Made in Germany once was a trustworthy label.... :--))... :--))
      Globalist times however have changed many things.
      Who is a fashion icon in Germany.... Hard question.
      Our chancellor??? Not really.
      Actually I think of private acquaintances, when I think of well dressed women. The above mentioned Ali McGraw lookalike would be still today one of them.
      Thanks again and best wishes. (Are you American or British?)

    I grew up in a very upscale neighborhood in Rye, NY. There was a store in town called “The Prep and College Shop.” I have 4 Lilly dresses, shorts, rompers and blouses. I think preppy summer clothes are very classic but comfortable. You don’t see many people wearing preppy clothing anymore but for me it’s an easy, very wearable style .

I have many of the pieces you mix and match and now that I’ve subscribed am able to see how to put them together. I was lucky enough to find a pair of Tommy Hilfiger shorts for $5 at the local thrift shop last weekend. Score!

    That was fun, Beth! Love Story sure popularized the preppy look in America. I actually think the prep school uniform thing was derived from British "public" schools. Ralph Lauren is often attributed with copying English Country Style, commercializing it, and then selling it back to the Brits! Much like the US shoemaker copying Jackie's Italian sandals and re-branding them as his own. Ralph Lauren staff are often found trolls yard sales in the English countryside, looking for old saddles, steamer trunks, etc. for their store displays. Lily Pulitzer, however, is uniquely American, sort of a country club/Florida look, which you would never see in the UK or continental Europe. Love this convo, maybe compare French and Italian style sometime? Thanks for all your great ideas.

    LOVE Preppy Style, too! Ali McGraw was sooooo fantastic in Love Store for her clothing and her long dark hair. A lot of us wanted to be Ali! Good choices from Talbot. Now that I've learned that, yes, I love classics but it moves into Preppy, I've bought quite a bit from Talbots this Winter and Spring. A few pieces from RL and Tommy Hilfiger. The bad news about TH is that this Spring he's changed the demographics for his target customer. He's now designing STREET STYLE for the 15-early 20's. That explains why I've seen so many rock-bottom sales on the "old" TH looks!

    I have a pair of Jack Rogers sandals that I still love, after about 15 years. However, I don't find them super comfortable. The toe separator is a bit difficult to wear for a long day. I save them for when I don't have to do a lot of walking.

    Beth, my other favorite RUclipsr is Marie Anne Lacoeur who teaches French style. Marie Anne recently said she would love to do a collaboration with an American style blogger. She gets a lot of requests about American style. Since she is French she doesn’t really do American style and would love to share it with her subs. I think you would be a perfect pairing. Please check her out. Also, I have a closet full of Lilly shifts and tops as well as Jacks. Since we have a beach condo, it is my summer uniform.

    Hi Beth,
    I live in Nashville and I think every woman in my neighborhood shops at Talbots. My son calls it the Soccer Mom uniform store. And he's kinda right... I coached his Soccer team 3 yrs and we would laugh about Moms wearing the same pants, tops, sweaters. Don't misunderstand, I love lots of their clothes and buy them, but I'm tired of looking exactly like my neighbor. How can I do preppy in Spring and feel more unique? I've been thrifting now that stores are reopen and found a couple cute pieces... a pencil skirt in light blue, and a peacoat in pink wool. Also, pale pink jeans. How do you dress differently than your friends or neighbors, and still hit up your favorite stores?

    • @BethDjalali
      @BethDjalali  3 года назад +1

      lots of different ways to rock the same item. that's where your personal spin comes in with accessories - shoes, jewelry, sunglasses, and handbags are a start. wear the skirt with a chambray shirt or a tee with a chambray shirt popped over the top. honestly, the options are endless. And I would suggest taking an item from a mid-price brand and add a luxury brand. True high/low dressing.

I hate trends, cookie cutter styles!...I love being stylish, comfortable, etc...There is Karenbritchick....I simply love her c hanel from New York!...she Stresses the importance of wearing what makes a woman stylish, happy, her individuality , NOT cookie cutter trendy, looking like someone else!...This is 2021!....Women are excelling in all areas of life...but it makes me so irritated seeing everyone dressing like someone else. I love being a woman, being sleek, stylish, exhibiting my own choice, taste, individuality, class in the clothing I wear...Just sick and tired of the old, stuffy, carbon copy , trendy , style of clothing that others insist someone should wear!....I really hope women find their own style, in clothing...Exhibiting color, class, style, fun, sexiness, art, great fit/cut, strength, even being comfortable and confidence in their choices of style....Women, please know or fully learn who you are and exhibit your own style, taste, reflecting your personality and individuality...

      Seventh - It may be hard to comprehend but there are women who do not have a sense of design or are not that concerned about the visual - It does not mean they are not individuals - I have a friend who is has a Ph.D. in Chemistry and a very demanding job - She never wants to think about clothes or interior design so if it looks good on the manikin she buys it and she hires people to decorate her house - But, she is definitely an individual.

    I think Beth looks best with pants and tops. I love how she layers her outfit. Very classy looking. But with dress and skirts? I find it a little off on her. Specifically the ones that hit around the mid thigh. Kind of awkward looking due to its length. I see some woman in their 60’s that can still pull it off. I think it depends on the body type. No offense meant. Just an honest opinion.
