      @@xXchiliXx11 Castor oil itself isn’t dangerous, it’s the effects of castor oil that are dangerous. It’ll give you such severe stomach cramps & very bad diarrhoea, which in itself can induce labour & that alone puts baby in stress, because the contractors are very hard & fast (as they’re mixed with stomach cramps too). It isn’t even worth risking a baby’s life just to self induce.

    dates and raspberry leaf tea aren't meant to bring on labour, they are just super foods, as far as I know they are meant to help strengthen your uterus and ripen your cervix and such so that WHEN you go into labour your contractions are more efficient. Also dates are a good superfood to aid in your body recovering from birth.

    • @Livvy_L

      I never took the dates, but I took raspberry leaf tea during my first 2 pregnancies, and it strengthened uterus too much! I literally took the labor and delivery class again with my 2nd child to know what I missed with my first (born 5 weeks early). You see, I didn't realize until after I had my first that I had been having some serious contractions 2.5 weeks before. I hadn't realized because my belly didn't get hard and soft. I thought I had just missed the signs. So I was the only one in the labor and delivery class who had given birth before, and I raised my hand and asked what a contraction (hardening and softening of the belly) felt like. I literally was constantly feeling my belly during my 2nd pregnancy and never felt it once until I was in full blown labor after my water broke while in labor and delivery. In fact I ended up on bedrest for 3 weeks with my 2nd because my midwife at my appointment asked me if I was having contractions (I said no) and hooked me up to a machine. My 3rd pregnancy my husband insisted I not take the tea because he thought that was why I had my problems. He was right. My belly acted normally and so I could gage if I needed to take it easier or not. I only took the tea the last month. Baby #3 was born at 40 weeks!

      Yes! I started red raspberry leaf tea in second trimester, didn't even drink daily maybe a few times a week and in the third trimester I started getting very mild cramps/ contractions immediately from drinking the tea so I stopped. I knew you were supposed to start with dates at 36 weeks but I totally didn't realize they were in Lara bars I would eat (not sure when I started eating those). It was my first and I went into natural labor just after 37 weeks. Even my midwives were surprised. Water broke around noon that day and had mild contractions until 5pm they started picking up. Baby boy was born at midnight that night, no interventions or epidural. And I'm telling you I wasn't very active, I didn't eat crazy healthy (probably ate worse from cravings), I didn't do anything physically to prepare for birth besides those 2 things and practice breathing. I made sure I prepared mentally as much as I could not knowing what it was going to be like but that's it.

    There are actually some studies about the effect of dates on breaking our bodies resistance to the action of oxytocin on our bodies during labor. It makes dilation happen much faster, since contractions get consistent (Something like that). It also softens the uterus, making dilation even easier, and has benefits on milk production and breastfeeding once the baby is born.
    I read a couple of serious, peer reviewed scientific articles on the matter when I was pregnant, but I no longer remember the details.
    And I actually ate the dates from 34 weeks till the 40th week, when I gave birth. I was in labor for only 2 hours, so I guess it worked for me...

Furthermore, most doctors know little to nothing about holistic medicine. They're put through big pharma medicinal education. You think big pharma wants people to use holistic medicine they can't put a big price tag on? Kids under 2 cannot take any type of cold medicine so when I went to pharmacy and asked the pharmacist about the natural medicine. I was told they could not give me any information or advice because it's natural medicine and there are no studies done on natural medication. Find a good doctor, listen to what they have to say, but don't let them be the be all end all of your information. After all one of the biggest causes of medical death is medical malpractice. 🙃

    Two things: Castor oil does in fact work and is an effective way to induce labour. It isn't usually recommended because it causes nausea and diahrrea. It's safe though as long as you don't mind the gastro side effects. Also, dates are great for pregnancy and while they don't induce labour they have heaps of other benefits for eating during pregnancy, and potentially can contribute to shorter first stage labour and lower rates of heamorrage. I got this info from Evidence Based Birth - just Google Evidence Based Birth Castory Oil and Dates for induction they did a podcast episode on it in which they discuss the research papers, including a cochrane review on this, and you can read the transcript on the site.

      Sex one is true! But I didn't orgasm! My first and only child I was one day from being induced. That evening at 5:00 I told my boyfriend that I heard sex can induce labor and I was ready to get that baby out (he was a summer baby and actually just turned 13yrs old 6/22/09) I was like "well I get induced tomorrow it's probably not gonna work" but we did and I went into labor 30 mins after at 6:00pm. I started having light period type of cramps and figured it was from being active having sex. And I went and took a bath to help ease the pain. Had no idea I actually went into labor. While I was in the bath I told my boyfriend not to call my Mom and tell her bc I definitely thought it didn't work and I wasn't in labor. Mind you I was 19 3 months from turning 20 and this was my first child. I get out of the bath and get dressed and my Mom is outside. I said "I'm not in labor! It's just a stomach ache!" So, we went to my mom's and as time went on, the "cramps" aka contractions were getting worse. So, me and my boyfriend walked up and down the road bc I figured if anything it was bracksten (sp) hicks contractions at that point. After we got done walking, I was beginning to really be in pain at 11:00 pm. I called the hospital and asked if I should come in (bc I didn't wanna be sent right back home) and they said to go ahead and come in. 12:15 I'm in there and I can't remember how much I was dilated when I got there but I was immediately put into the delivery room after they checked my dilation and I had my son 4 1/2 hours later with no epidural! Bc I had severe preeclampsia. My OB/GYN called 4 hours later at the time I was supposed to be there to start induction and said I see you had the baby? 😂

    There is actually scientific evidence backing up dates for cervical ripening. Eating 6 dates per day every day after 37 weeks can promote cervical ripening. Eating dates does **not** “induce” labor, but it can help the cervix to be softer and more ready to dilate. OB/GYNs are not always up to date on research that doesn’t specifically fit their residency or boards but that research still has validity.

And there is a way more recent Norwegian study from 2011 that has found a C-section to be 3 times more likely in women drinking this tea. (After correcting for bias).
      Midwifes in my country agree it seems to make tearing 'down there' more likely and heal slower/more complicated. (But this is only empirical).

      Think about that- for like 3 seconds. If you start doing something weeks before labor- it will induce labor…. For that to make even a little bit of sense logically you’d have to assume that labor wasn’t going to happen otherwise, which is obviously preposterous. I could say that I started sniffing cilantro everyday for weeks before my due date and went into labor and that means the cilantro induced my labor. Obviously that’s absurd. This is why “holistic remedies” which do actually have research now that often (but not always of course) say they don’t work take hold. People not understanding basic correlation and causation principles. You can’t attribute induction of labor to anything that doesn’t pretty immediately induce said labor because you can’t know when labor would’ve started otherwise.

    • @ClareWiley
      @ClareWiley 6 месяцев назад

      @@ButterSandwich there is a lot of high quality research showing that eating 5-6 dates a day for a couple weeks before your due date softens your cervix, making spontaneous labor more likely and a shorter labor. Not everyone just goes into labor on their own and for some people it is weeks and weeks after their due date. You can absolutely do research that shows the efficacy of eating them over a period of time. It will not start contractions for you but your cervix being softer means baby’s head can come down lower and put more pressure on your cervix which causes your body to release its own hormones to start labor.

    • @ButterSandwich
      @ButterSandwich 6 месяцев назад

      @@ClareWiley "it will not start contractions for you" that's my point- dates do not induce labor. Can dates help make labor easier? Sure. I'll take your word for there being high quality research on it. I'm not anti-dates in pregnancy. I'm saying that it is preposturous to say that *anything* can induce labor when used weeks in advance of normally timed labor- that isn't how causation works. Unless you can show that people who eat dates close to their due date always go into labor within x number of weeks of starting dates, and people who do not are significantly more likely to not have labor start on its own by, say, 42 weeks, you can't say dates *induce* labor. Why does it matter? Because someone might be scared away from medical intervention and try to use dates or other remedies to induce labor to a point that waiting for labor becomes less safe. Because people may experience health anxiety thinking that accidently eating dates too early will cause early labor. Because someone who experiences extremely early labor after eating dates might blame themselves. Again- eat the dates, but don't claim dates- or anything else- can induce labor if it cannot- medical misinformation is inherently bad.

    Best thing to do: don't try to endure labour.

      @@kathyryder828 there is plenty of anecdotal evidence to suggest it does help induce labor, and speed it up, if labor is ready to start. This is well known in midwifery and the herbalist community. They don’t do enough studies to make herbs like this anything more than anecdotal, but that wouldn’t make them any money so they never will.

    I've had three kids, the first was a hospital birth with an epidural. The next two were natural home births.
    All of these tricks (excluding castor oil) can benefit in different ways. Dates help to ripen your cervix. Red raspberry leaf tea helps to strengthen your uterine muscles to make your contractions stronger when they actually start. Walking and stretching are great in general. Bouncing on a birth ball and squats can help to loosen ligaments and allow baby to drop a bit which helps put pressure on your cervix (the pressure is what gets contractions going). Spicy things and castor oil can cause intestinal cramping which "can" stimulate uterine cramps/contractions, but is not a for sure thing. Castor oil can be dangerous because it can cause the baby to poop in utero which can then be aspirated and cause issues. Do not use unless under Dr instructions

    I had castor oil work 2 times. First time it worked and my baby came flying out and I didn't poop in labor bc it all came out before I headed to the birth center. I was under the care of a midwife for these though.

    I do housekeeping in a hospital and this week has been crazy for births! Our maternity gloor has been totally full. We had to discharge 4 moms late Wednesday night to make room for urgent intakes, and last night I was cleaning the emergency room when 2 ladys walked in right after eachother, I'm sure the elevator doors closed on the second lady's face their arrivals were so close. It seems there's a baby season around here lol, and it's in full swing

    Raspberry leaf tea, dates, pineapple, okra water, are not meant to induce labor, it’s meant to prep the uterus and cervix. There is no formal method of “natural” induction since the results vary so widely about who it actually works for.

    Dates aren’t for inducing labor, they’re for shortening the labor and delivery process. For 4 of my labors I did the 6 dates a day in the last two months thing and all of those labors were less than 12 hours (instinct that today will be the day and realizing the Braxton hicks have a pattern to holding the baby). The one I didn’t have dates for was 17 hours total, and my outlier, with dates, was an induction with pitocin a week early for preeclampsia. She took 27 hours from arriving at hospital to holding her; about 17 hours from when the pitocin actually seemed effective.
    I dunno if it’s placebo effect, and I don’t care as long as it keeps working for me.

I didn't do a lot but I swear that's why my son ended up pooping while inside me.. I ended up after an emergency c section as well but that's because of all the complications that started after I received my epidural. My son was born, inhaled his poop was in the nicu until we left at the end of the week long stay. Thankfully he was/is healthy but I will NEVER do that again and I ALWAYS Try and talk people out of using that junk too.

    I’m going to disagree with you with castor oil. I actually induced 3 of my pregnancies (2nd,3rd,4th pregnancy) using castor oil. Because I had a c-section with my first (didn’t fully dilate), I didn’t want to have another one. The doctors said either I’m having natural labour or will be having an elective c-section which i absolutely did not want. Made a delicious shake using chocolate ice cream, banana, milk and 2tbsp of castor oil, and went into labour that day. It works. And it didn’t give me diarrhoea!! I had loose stools 1-3 times during the day, but if anything it felt nice to empty my bowels before having my baby that day.

    My brother and his wife just had their first. The midwife they hired recommended castor oil to help induce labor because she was a week late. She immediately started having full contractions. The midwife said it was normal and said they should stay at home, they would pass. She was taken to the hospital in an ambulance and had to have an emergency C-section because the baby was breached and in major stress due to the contractions. The doctors didn't think she would be okay and had flight for life running on the roof ready to take her to the children's hospital.
    Mom and baby are doing just fine now and have both recovered.

    My mother in law convinced me to do it because I was in so much pain at 39 weeks and 5 days. My doctor refused to induced me, so I took it and felt everything this doctor just described. I was in the hospital laboring for 2 days the end of the second day a doctor walks in and tells me if I don’t show any progress or have him within the next hour I’m going for emergency c section. By the will of god I had him exactly 40 minutes later, with a lot of bleeding hemorrhaging, uncontrollably shaking, absolute mayhem. My daughter on the other hand made it 7 cm no intervention, however I couldn’t relax my cervix towards the end there and in fear of tearing it I was convinced to get an epidural from the on call night doctor 10 minutes later I had my daughter. But because I was already so close and having back to back contractions my back got stuck with a epidural needle about 8 times because everytime they stuck me I would have a very painful contraction

    Y’all she’s 100% right ab castor oil. I did the castor oil method when I was pregnant, went into pre labor for a week straight, contractions were inconsistent and not very long but VERY painful when they did come. Went to hospital they said baby was fine so they sent me home told me to wait until contractions were a few minutes apart lasting a certain amount of time. Well that never happened but a week after I took the castor oil, about three days after I went to the hospital, the contractions ended. Then I got induced about a week maybe 2 weeks later.
    It could’ve went a lot worse and I regret ever doing it however I learned from my mistake. I was very uneducated on it and just decided to do it on a whim cause I was sick of being pregnant and miserable. Never again!

    I had a castor oil shake (mixed with fat and protein to diminish the diarrhea effects) and gave birth ~24hrs later.
