this was forever ago and assuming you got the position you’ve probably had lots of opportunity to grow in your style. now, that said: this was fantastic. really good cue technique and pattern, but it is all so forced. the way your band plays should reflect your conducting. your band, if reflecting this style, would play with great accuracy and effectiveness. i think what you should focus on is emotion in conducting and letting loose. your table is so so established that i think you could relax and easily maintain it. after, i’d say try conducting just your patterns in pieces and feel the music. your band won’t really need all the elaborate cues. cool? heck yeah. you’re really good at that. but i would establish emotion in conducting and let loose before adding all those in. but it was a pleasure to watch this

I did the second movement for my audition! This is so surreal, even though it isn't the same part. We both have different styles, but it's so cool!

Liz M I see 4. 2/4,3/4,4/4/&5/4.It just looks like more because of all the different types of conducting patterns he's using. Sorry for the late response.

It’s on beat and there’s some okay subdivisions your show, but there’s just so much hand mirroring and you’re not showing how the notes should resonate. As a player this would be uncomfortable to watch, and I would have no idea what you want me to do. The only thing I know is what count we’re on.

@@johnrodriguez700 Not every single note, but stylistic conducting is absolutely possible. I saw minimal styles displayed. And yes players should have it memorized, but then you could say there need be no conductor. A metronome would be just as fine. But as musicians, I'm sure we can both agree real conductors are better. Professional orchestras might have certain pieces memorized, but conductors still show style. So I'm afraid I disagree with you. Not that he was bad, but that it wasn't quite what I'd use for study or tutorial. Wish you the best!

@@johnrodriguez700 I never said this was an orchestra... I mentioned that so you'd hopefully understand the importance of an interpretive conductor. There's little variation in the piece to reflect changes in the musical texture, harmonic context, or emphasis on the development of motifs. I have this problem with other drum majors, not just picking on this guy. But to me, the lack of deeper musical education is appalling. It is an honor and a privilege to stand in front of an ensemble and conduct. It requires proper training to be a competent conductor. Proper training includes being able to understand those details I mentioned earlier. Instead, band directors just say "Oh, learn this pattern, beat in time, and you're good." These drum majors learn nothing about music and walk away thinking it makes them proper conductors. My band director saw I was able to understand that stuff and she let me conduct all of the concert and symphonic pieces for my school, and when I competed in drum major competitions, surface level analysis like mirroring hands and showing little understanding of the music itself was subpar.
