Smh, these comments are funny. Yes, a lot of the individual parts for Southern's cadences may be "boring" for most of you but playing alot of notes doesn't always make a sensible cadence. It's the relationship between each and every beat of the various parts (cymbal, snare, tenor, bass) that makes a cadence whole. When Don Dillon and Johnny Lane and other various percussionists put these cadences together they weren't focused on "oh the snare or tenor drum part just has to have 50 million notes to make a part. And it has to be super difficult to play." they keyed in on the musicality of accenting each of the instruments at a different times to make music. If everybody's part consists of a bunch of notes then it's gonna get jumbled up... which is another reason Southern doesn't have quads, or quints. Any good drummer can play with a hi-hat, snare, floor tom, & a bass drum. You don't necessarily NEED 4-5 more to sound good. If you played them all at once you'd sound like a jackass anyway. So no need. Don't forget that a drum section is supposed to emulate a drum set.👍🏾

Zachary Walker THANK YOU! Good to know that someone else gets it. It's all about the "conversation" between the voices in the drum section.

Yeah, a lot of it sounds way different than before. I also wish the "AY-OH's" was louder. I remeber as a kid I could hear it from far away. It's kinda how you knew when Southern was coming. Now, unless you're right in front of them you cant even hear it.

Like in the 90's-2000's they would damn near scream it. 2009-2013 it turned to chants. Now its like mumbles.

crazy_asf there style is old school. They don't carry around quads. It's snare, bass, and tenors. That's it legit drumline. Quads is not part of there old school style.

One of the reasons I went to SU...."no quads" (or, any other "fat" for marching bands...ie flags). I played quads in HS, and couldn't wait to get to a section without them...lol
