You look for degree of difficulty on musicianship, and overall sound, in a drum battle not trickery. And overall without a doubt PV whom I love is still a peg under JSU....

Pvamu..... much clearer sound, much more controlled. WT was great,don't get me wrong, but they tended to get muddy in certain spots.

+james thompson I think there are a few others that are actually better than PV. NSU, SC State, and Bethune would eat them. They are great, but they need a bit more practice to come and wreck shop in the meac.
Cold steel would dismantle every part of PVU wth a warm-up.I like Cookman to wax PVU as well no problem.Hell I like FAMU too!!lol

WT took this one...just might be the best drum line in America. The precision and togetherness is unmatched...jsu snares just give me that unique groovy hbcu sound that matches the style of hbcu bands...I don't like when hbcus play on corp style sounding drums...I'm not a drummer but imo this is one reason why jsu has the best band the way the drumline sounds and the overall cadences Etc has a lot to do with how the band sounds as a whole
That's some real shit. The problem is that majority of the drumheads out here love the sound of the Kevlar heads. Most HBCU snarelines use them now. I heard people ask why dont WT switch to them. They dont understand that if WT snares used them it will not only kill their sound, but the overall sound of the Sonic Boom. That's why JSU, SU, Grambling, Alcorn, still use a traditional sound. Now when it comes to best lines I'm going to roll with Jackson St, NCAT, BCU, and probably South Carolina St. thing is they are all different in their own right on how they do their approaches

MSD put on a drum show. WT came to battle. You will probally never see WT do a drum show in a battle. They have groove cadences for that.

PV was good, but they chose the wrong type of cadences to play against WT. Its obvious that they came to chop, so I gotta give the W to WT.
wrong PV smashed them....The cadences were alot better, JSU had nice chops but the cadences were horrible

Both did their thing in this battle. So it boils down to critiques.
MSD wasn't as together (as they usually are) in quite a few spots; some of them were doing movements differently.
WT: all I see is a snare drummer missed a head flash in the solo...
I'd give WT the win as a result.

I liked PV's presentation way more. WT played a couple of cadences and that was it. Sorry...but WT was mistaken if they thought that would be enough to get over on PV. PV got this one...as expected.

As a trained percussionist I have to give it to WT. I look for chops first, grooving second, and entertainment third. WT played with all 3 in tact. I didn't see MSD chop as much.
Although a crowd is there to be entertained, I think that it's understood that a line of the caliber of these two schools goes in understanding that there's always a statement to be made to the opposition. I saw the statement more from JSU and the material that they chose to play.

Face to face drum battles should be cadence for cadence... Not feature for feature.. Unless it's discussed ahead of time.. This battle would've been very easy to judge had MSD played their battle material.. They're nice with both features and battle cadences. W.T. ftw IMO..

I have to agree. WT painted a picture with each cadence. They made music. Not just a bunch of rudimentary flashes and unfinished cadences. Sound like they only played half the song. Sound like they kept changing channels and every channel was some bullshit
What is the drums ( snare drums and particular )sound different even though they're made by the same drum company?
The type of drum JSU got they came with clear heads they just changed them I'm not saying you can't put a black max on it it would just sound different but those drums are made for show style
Pv snare they use the DFX snares those can be used with both and get a different sound qualify because they have 2 snare guts JSU has the same branded drums they use for practice they just took the second snare gut off and use different heads

Ok PV won this one. Reason why their rudiments are clean. Listen to the Snares, Quads, Basses and Cymbals. Even though War and Thunder sound ok, its not the cleanest. I have seen JSU play clean before on those Power stroke 77s. Like Scott Johnson said with the old school heads you can get away with hiding some bits of rudimentation but when i comes down to it and you really really listen it sounds dirty. Vs the Evans Heads that see on PV's Snares. You can hear the cleanest of the snares and the hear the rudiments. That's what sets the two SWAC lines apart. But on a Flip Side JSU's Tenor and Bass Line is nothing to mess with. They are clean but the Snares need to get on their game. I look at the whole and go base on the cleanest rudiments. Don't matter if its show or corps, what matters is playing it right and sounding like a unit and not sounding dirty. Got to sound as one, not two or three. If one person is off then it looks bad and you can hear it on the audio. That comes from true percussionist.
+Travis Cyprien Regardless the heads they're playing on, both had their dirty moments.. So that discredits your judgement about half way. Power strokes don't hide anything.. If it's clean, it's clean & vice versa.. Another thing, you're basing the battle off of the snare lines alone.. Me personally, I listen to the grooves (entire section) and rudimentary variations being played on both ends and then I judge.. WT for the win..

CLEAN IT UP! Tip: Don't smack the shit out of the drums and you can get a better sound out of them. A good, uniform sound > Loud. I can't even tell what the beats are supposed to be.

I Crabbe in 97 when they was the box I wanted to see this battle. It wouldn't have even been close...box all day. This version is good. Pv took this one MO doubt. Technical wise and show wise.

JSU is a great drumline but they lazy and dirty you can look and tell .. PV won this one by musicianship and technique because they were clean and sounded clean just needa lock in there rolls but JSU needa practice on playing together because the cadences would be great if it sounded as one but I do agree they need Evans heads ..

I like Jackson state band . But they drums sound horrible . Best drumline in HBCU goes to MDFS hands down . They will eat ever drum line in the SWAC including WT . They don’t even want them problems with Norfolk state drum line .
