Love the way you demonstrate all the different outcomes Theo. Like the bad exits, collapses etc. It's fine reading or being told the theory, but it's better to see someone actually do it and see what happens.
The volume of information in this tutorial is amazing. It definitely gives an huge amount of background knowledge that hopefully, people will take with them to an SIV.
Pour tous les rageux qui ne veulent pas de sous-titres, je propose que Théo se double lui même en français, ça pourrait être fun ;-) PS : super tuto, vivement le prochain !
Thanks, Great Video, I had a incident in Organya when I tried to exit a spiral by suddenly releasing brake and putting opposite brake which flung me nearly up and over the wing, I ended up in twists but kicked out. Thanks for the tutorial and advice
That's a wonderful video about spirals I'm kind of terrified of spirals and spins. I'm just learning to fly my epsilon 9 at the school to get my first license and I'm only ground-handling now. I love your attitude. It's a great big nice flat giant place to land with a tow truck, where I go to the school. I'm worried about getting a locked spiral. You are the happiest most reassuring person on the internet talk anybody spiral how to deal with it, kind of start it how to stop. I love your style flying along with no breaks waving your hands while you talk.
What a brilliant, clear and comprehensive tutorial, thank you Theo, very impressive. I did my first and second SIV's back to back last year and, through this vivid demonstration, could feel those manoeuvres recreated and reinforced again.
This is great. Thanks so much! I managed to learn myself how to spiral dive using your tutorial, and it's so much fun! Perfect explanation, "best practice" tips, and - what I personally really like - you explain how to start easy and slowly and escalate difficulty level according to experience. Perfect for beginners. Thanks again. Please keep up your tutorial series - this is awesome!
Me too. After watching this video I tried spiral dives. On my third try I got to almost nose down, maybe 80 degrees for a millisecond. Have to keep practicing. I have to keep weight to the inside and turning to dissipate the pitch surge/shoot at the exit.
Merci !!! Bons vols
Perfect tutorial , perfect way how to explain and demonstrate. I am a beginner and I really appriciate this kind of video lesson. I cant wait to excercise. Thank you very very much Theo. Respect from Vetroplach (Slovak Republic)
Thanks! Been missing your tutorials. Great explainory and very nice approach you have with us (pilots watching) going step by step to feel comfortable when doing this.
Well done Theo! very helpful... I fly with NOVA ION 5. One quesition please, when you initiate the pitch exit you apply the outside brake. What happening with the inside brake that moment? Is it necessary to release totaly in the same time or is better to keep slightly brake the inside during outside brake input?
You're showing both regulating by releasing inside and by releasing a bit inside and braking outside. Any difference to know between the 2 approaches? I think outside break stresses the glider more?
Awsome!! Perfect video! I'm just not sure to control the pitch.. When goes forward: Pull breaks... Release at the top.. And ... Pull again when the PG is swinging backwards? Thank you!!
Thanks Théo, I enjoy your tutorials and find them helpful. Can you clarify something: You say that you must keep your hands up before the glider goes past your head. Watching the video it seems you are braking a little bit after a rapid exit while the glider is still behind you. (18:56 into the video.) Did you mean that you must not brake while the pilot is shooting up (glider falling back in relation to pilot), but that as soon as the glider starts to rise in relation to the pilot you should brake a bit to slow down the glider, even when it is still behind you and you are facing the sky? (I suppose while being careful not to stall it.)
I guess, on that try he brakes while the glider is behind just to show what would happen if you do that, not that it is correct to break while the glider is behind the pilot.
Super nice tutorial, thanks a lot for that, but what about compensation and it's effects on exits ? Could you develop a little about the outside brake and its effects on spiral dive training ? Cheers ^_^
Nice tutorial Theo. Maybe it will be better to make a window where you were filmed from the side a little bigger as this view is also informative. Anyway great thanks.
The lower aspect ratio of A and B gliders make them more sensible to instable / neutral spiral. The fact that they also are really solid helps that’s why :)
Théo I m 86 kg in flight ,it s ok to take an xs ion 6light for me ?Now I fly an arak which is an 75-95 range but I feel uncomfortable in thermaling and turbolence .thank you so much for your tutorial
My Teachers showed me different way to do, which seems to be wrong or simply with missing information. I will try this simple way next time in Annecy, thanks! I watched and was just like 😳... Eh so easy? 🤦♂️
I learnt spirals during a SIV course, and the instructor there told us to exit a spiral only by pulling the external brake, warning us that releasing the internal brake will just make the spiral faster. Is this wrong? From the video I understand that releasing the internal brake is a very common way to exit spiral
You did not watch the video completely. You can exit the spiral by releasing the inside with a small spiral. But for deep spiral you need to pull the outside brake to exit
@@theoflies thanks for your reply. Actually my doubt is: is it correct to exit a small spiral by pulling the external brake or this could lead to issues?
@@amgalbu185 yes, you can exit pulling the outside brake and releasing the inside brake...it will be a faster exit (with more energy), but as long as you are aware of pulling the inside brake and/or weight shifting on the inside immediately the glider is in the vertical/neutral position...otherwise you risk going in the other direction, etc. If the spiral is small and you are just starting, slowly releasing just the inside brake and keeping inside weight shift, as Theo recommends in this video, will allow for a slow/safe/controlled exit (energy management).

Hello , great tutorial, thanks to you.
What is a average sink rate speed m/s in small spiral ?
It goes from 5 / 7m/s on a small. And 7/15 m/s for an intermediate one. And then 15+ on deep spiral
Great video! During a strong pitch, should you look upwards at the glider or straight at the horizon?
In between. The idea is to have the glider and the Horizonte both in visual !
Nice Video, Please, where this place?
