  • Théo de Blic's tutorials is a free web serie where I give a few usefull tips on various aspect of paragliding. The tips I give are coming from an already long career as a professional pilot in acro paragliding.
    In today's episode I will talk about spiral dive, deep spiral and nose down spiral. Spiral dive is a really well known trick in paragliding. It is one of the most used rapid descent technics and therefore is one of the most dangerous one because many pilots do not know how to perform it.
    In this tutorial I am giving you all the tips I have about how to learn spiral dive, how to manage the Gs, how to train the exit, and how to handle the possible danger of Spiral Dive.
    This tutorial is one of the most complete I have ever done and so I apologise for the fact that it is 27min long but there are so much stuffs to tell on this particular exercise !
    As always please subscribe share and like this video. This is really important in order to maximise the amount of pilots who get access to this tutos but also to give me more views which eventually translates into more videos :) Thanks in advance !
    Pour les français il y a la possibilité de mettre des sous titres en Français ! Profitez en !

    Love the way you demonstrate all the different outcomes Theo. Like the bad exits, collapses etc. It's fine reading or being told the theory, but it's better to see someone actually do it and see what happens.

    That's a wonderful video about spirals I'm kind of terrified of spirals and spins. I'm just learning to fly my epsilon 9 at the school to get my first license and I'm only ground-handling now. I love your attitude. It's a great big nice flat giant place to land with a tow truck, where I go to the school. I'm worried about getting a locked spiral. You are the happiest most reassuring person on the internet talk anybody spiral how to deal with it, kind of start it how to stop. I love your style flying along with no breaks waving your hands while you talk.

Is it necessary to release totaly in the same time or is better to keep slightly brake the inside during outside brake input?

    Thanks Théo, I enjoy your tutorials and find them helpful. Can you clarify something: You say that you must keep your hands up before the glider goes past your head. Watching the video it seems you are braking a little bit after a rapid exit while the glider is still behind you. (18:56 into the video.) Did you mean that you must not brake while the pilot is shooting up (glider falling back in relation to pilot), but that as soon as the glider starts to rise in relation to the pilot you should brake a bit to slow down the glider, even when it is still behind you and you are facing the sky? (I suppose while being careful not to stall it.)

    • @laltin0
      @laltin0 2 года назад

      I guess, on that try he brakes while the glider is behind just to show what would happen if you do that, not that it is correct to break while the glider is behind the pilot.

    Question: yo say that some en-A or B they have the tendency to remain locked. Why, what is the reason, theory?

    • @theoflies
      @theoflies  2 года назад +2

      The lower aspect ratio of A and B gliders make them more sensible to instable / neutral spiral. The fact that they also are really solid helps that’s why :)

    Je suis curieux, à notre école, pour sortir des spirales, ils nous faisaient garder le frein intérieur et ajouter très progressivement du frein extérieur et ne rien relacher avant de sortir, on avait pas trop d'abattées à la sortie. C'était vraiment super facile à gérer et assez rassurant. Quel inconvénients tu y vois?

    Nice Video, Please, where this place?

  • @amgalbu185
    @amgalbu185 2 года назад

    I learnt spirals during a SIV course, and the instructor there told us to exit a spiral only by pulling the external brake, warning us that releasing the internal brake will just make the spiral faster. Is this wrong? From the video I understand that releasing the internal brake is a very common way to exit spiral

    • @theoflies
      @theoflies  2 года назад

      You did not watch the video completely. You can exit the spiral by releasing the inside with a small spiral. But for deep spiral you need to pull the outside brake to exit

    • @amgalbu185
      @amgalbu185 2 года назад

      @@theoflies thanks for your reply. Actually my doubt is: is it correct to exit a small spiral by pulling the external brake or this could lead to issues?

    • @riconjos
      @riconjos 2 года назад +1

      @@amgalbu185 yes, you can exit pulling the outside brake and releasing the inside brake...it will be a faster exit (with more energy), but as long as you are aware of pulling the inside brake and/or weight shifting on the inside immediately the glider is in the vertical/neutral position...otherwise you risk going in the other direction, etc.
      If the spiral is small and you are just starting, slowly releasing just the inside brake and keeping inside weight shift, as Theo recommends in this video, will allow for a slow/safe/controlled exit (energy management).
