  • Théo de Blic's tutorials is a free web serie where I give a few usefull tips on various aspect of paragliding. The tips I give are coming from an already long career as a professional pilot in acro paragliding.
    In today's episode I am talking about how to exit an autorotation ! It's not the most fancy of subject, it's not as flashy or attractive as wing overs, stalls or infinity tumbling but it's one of the first reason to many paragliding accident.
    This subject is rarely spoken off on social medias, and there are close to nothing in term of video explanations on what to do in order to react to an autorotation. So I felt the paragliding community deserved to have this here even though it won't make as many views as other subject I am sure it might be useful to many of you guys and it might save some lifes :)
    It's a complicated and tricky subject and I tried to make it as simple as possible with being as clear as possible. I cannot cover it all in a video but I think this tutorial will give you as much information as you might need in order to understand and see what this is all about. It will give you first hand tips from a lifetime of experience in flying and if you apply them it should be able to sort out many tricky situations ! I also used an EN-B as well as an EN-C in order to cover the widest range of pilots possible !
    Please subscribe to my channel, like and share this video in order to support my work. More tutorials are on their ways to the channel this season ! So you better subscribe in order not to miss them !
    Pour les français il y a la possibilité de mettre des sous titres en Français !

    I just want people to know that in the worst case scenario, if you're twisted or whatever, pulling the breaks or rear risers hard enough will stall the glider and from there throwing the reserve works better than in autorotation.

    • @DrAElemayo
      @DrAElemayo 4 месяца назад

      Very important to note: Make sure the glider STAYS stalled while you throw the reserve. Put both brakes in one hand and keep them in backfly position or lower. Then throw the reserve. The stall exit can make things a lot worse. If you're too low though just throw your reserve fast enough to hopefully have it slow down the stall exit surge before it gets too strong.

    Thank you very much Theo for making these tutorials, I do not have acro ambitions (50 years now), too much adrenaline) but love to learn more and make my flying safe as much as possible. Full stalls, autorotation, cravats, twist, reserve throw are surely matter that every pilot should master. Would you do one day a tutorial dealing with asymmetric and frontal collapse? As seen from your personal perspective. Maybe that is not for your usual audience but many could benefit from it, I would surely spread it around. Thank you anyway.

I have always thought that knowledge from acro pilots is high value for every average pilot doing recreational flying, of course, practice should follow to be effective and this is not happening every time, however many of us want to improve, so we love to know from you what technique you would use is such scenarios.

    Merci Théo, ca explique bien comment basculer son poids dans la sellette réoriente le parapente et sa gestion d'energie. J'espere pas faire de l autorotation dans le futur, mais au moins ca donne un peu plus confiance par rapport à la conclusion du vol. Est ce que quelqu'un à deja essayer de tirer sur les autres elevateurs pour fermer le profil completement ? Je me pose la question de détruire le flux d'air pour stopper l'engagement de l'autorotation et ainsi sortir le secours en mode un peu plus 'sécu'

    • @theoflies
      @theoflies  4 года назад +6

      Yes with a twist it become even more complicated ! because you have to manage the changes due to the twist, harder pressure, disorientation, changes of direction for handling... Twisted autorotation is one of the few incident which result in rescue most of the time..

    • @DrAElemayo
      @DrAElemayo 4 месяца назад

      It shouldn't change much. Though the brake pressures would probably be different. Either way, you pull as hard as needed to stop the rotation. It will be a lot more than you think

  • @mmmmkkk
    @mmmmkkk 4 года назад

    Funny how sector maintains the outer side collapsed, which actually helps the pilot, but indeed, higher AR wings are not made for SATs ;)

  • @crickhowellparagliding

  • @crashdown45
    @crashdown45 3 года назад

    I assume highest risk for auto rotation is after an inside collapse and cravat in a big wingover? So you're already high energy and spinning? All the assymetrics I've taken in normal flight, or even on full bar in SIV, have resulted in little change of heading / rotation (high en-B) unless I actually lean into the collapse

    • @DrAElemayo
      @DrAElemayo 4 месяца назад

      A cravatte is very different from a collapse. Even a small cravatte can cause huge amounts of brake pressure. With induced collapses, you can have more than half the wing gone and it will require only a small counter rotation.
      Cravattes mainly happen (for non acro pilots) from things like badly done wingovers and stall exits. Both of which can also give you a head start on the rotation.

    Great vid! Your explanations and demonstrations are very easy to follow--well done! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!! Lastly, isn't an autorotation the same as a spiral? If so, why a different name?

    • @theoflies
      @theoflies  4 года назад +1

      Hello, Thanks for your message. If you look closely at the outside footage you will see that a full autorotation is not turning the same as a spiral. An autorotation is closer to a SAT with the wing turning around the pilot. + an autorotation is something which is un wanted and un created by the pilot. A spiral is normally created by the pilot. hope this is clear :)

    One question. In case you have a big and fast autorotation and you have spacial disorientation, you feel totally lost will be a good solution to put your two hands and barkes totally down? Then wait a straight descent?

      Même principe, si on est "face" voile, faut juste inverser les commandes.
      Si la commande de la demi-aile volante reste bloquée à cause des twists, je PENSE mais me TROMPE peut-être, qu'il faut tout décrocher pour lancer le secours en "sécurité".

    • @theoflies
      @theoflies  4 года назад +1

      It makes to me a big difference to put weightshift. First of all if your weightshift is on the outside it is much easier to put brake in the outside. So I have to strongly disagree with what was told to you :)

    • @englischdude
      @englischdude 4 года назад

      @@theoflies but if half the glider is collapsed you are basically hanging from one point, namely the one riser. you can shift your weight all you want, your weight is still always hanging on the same point?!? please note, i am NOT an experienced pilot so it is very interesting for me to understand this. Hi Theo, Thank you for your videos, they are great and very useful! Allow me a question on autorotation: in a podcast by Gavin McClurg Matt Beechinor talked about getting into such situation over a canyon. He said he got out of the autorotation by pulling about 3 armlegths of the brakelines of the collapsed (i.e. slack) side and after that the glider started to re-inflate. I was surprised when I heard this, however, Matt was referring to the fact that acro guys use this method. Do you know something about such a solution? Could it be the way to go when the risers are twisted? Thanks! Ivan (P.s.: He called it "ESP" and you can listen to it here from the 33. minute: www.cloudbasemayhem.com/podcast-episode-2-matt-beechinor-the-glider-podcast/ )

    Pourquoi tu ne précises pas de quel côté il faut mettre le weightshift ? Càd du côté encore solide de la voile. En français on dit qu'il faut contrer c'est dans le sens du mot mais en anglais weightshift est juste un déplacement latéral du poids, or c'est justement en mettant le poids du côté qui a perdu sa portance qu'on démarre l'autorotation.
    Dans un soucis d'accessibilité, il serait peut être utile de préciser le côté du transfert de poids.

    • @theoflies
      @theoflies  4 года назад

      Dans la video je dis "counter" qui est l'équivelent de contrer en francais... Du coup il me semble que ca coule de source :)

    • @butchdelayaute
      @butchdelayaute 4 года назад

      @@theoflies
      oui counter veut dire contrer :-p
      en fait je n'ai pas remarqué que tu le disais car tu l'associes a l'autorotation et pas au transfert de poids.
      car si tu transfert le poids du mauvais coté tu vas empirer l'autorotation.
      pose la question a 10 debutants: "quand je veux contrer une autorotation du a une fermeture assymetrique d'un coté, je dois faire un transfert de poids. de quel coté doit etre ce transfert de poids? cote ouvert ou cote fermé"
      pour tous les gens qui savent gerer la reponse est evidente, pour ceux qui ne savent pas ca ne l'est pas forcement.
