I hope you´ll enjoy the video and my struggles. I felt shy about posting this video with so many silly mistakes of mine but hey that's what happened if you choose to learn to paraglide I'm sure you will have some funny stories to tell too. Enjoy 🪂
Loved the video, takk 👍 It's always great seeing people going through the learning of a new skill (and that includes the inevitable 'silly mistakes' 😀) Everyone should learn/appreciate the '4 stages of competence' model... both to understand what they will have to go through when doing something new, but also to have some empathy/appreciation for whe n others have to learn something they can already do! 🤓 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_stages_of_competence
Come on, this seems not to be the first time on a glider for you 😂... OK, Wind seemed to be perfect and calm in the first Spot but as you lifted the glider backwards I was thinking ehm OK this is too lucky for the first day 😅😅😅
This is a good thing to post! It allows you to stay humble in your progression. Humble pilots live longer. Live to Fly , and Fly to Live. Safety is important, and Fun is the motivation to stay in the sport. One does not supersede the other. If it's not fun, what's the point, if it's not safe, it's not fun in the long run. Keep learning ALWAYS. I really enjoyed watching you learn to fly. I look forward to seeing more of your adventures.
I'm watching this thinking, where have I seen this guy before? Ah, Skiing videos! I myself have been paragliding for a few years now and thoroughly enjoy it. I enjoy watching other people starting out. Days spent ground handling are never wasted! Ground handling is one of the most important skill-building things you can do. It's great when you start learning to thermal, I did a flight about a week and a half ago 4 hours and 13 minutes. Welcome to the world of Para-waiting! CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Ahhh good times, I remember learning to ground handle and the magic of my first real flights, such a cool sport. Paragliding and backcountry skiing are my favorite sports, both give you the freedom to explore the mountains in ways many people never will.
Fantastic video and well done getting your paragliding licence. It’s so much fun. I was really impressed with your instructor too. Loved his attitude to paragliding. 👍
This was really fun to watch and brings back memories for me. You handled it with great confidence and happiness which really counts for your next steps. Next to safety, pilot attitude is very important, and you're dialed in my friend! Congrats!
I have had 3 lessons so far. Got in 3 shlort launches on the bunny hill and did about a 20 minute tandem with my instructor out near San Fransico CA. Can't wait to get back to finish up. Had loads of fun watching you get your rating. I thought you did great and thanks so much for takiing the time to put all of that together.
And I thought getting back into mtn biking was dangerous! I did bust knee cartilage and have a plate in my rt leg now from getting buck-flipped into a rock garden. All the best Jens & Stomp It bros!
So much fun seeing the progress throughout your course. Seems like there was a good amount of ground-handling 💪💪 Very good. Keep having fun 🪂 Best regards from 🇳🇴
That was good thanks, and good to see you save the situation early on when the wing went off to your right; so many people would give up and plonk the wing down to start again.
Great video documenting your learning Jens! Some similarities to the kite boarding class I recently took. For that, LEI (inflatable leading edge) kites are used. Started with a 5m kite with short lines and progressed up to 12m full length lines kind of like you did the first day. Be safe and have fun!
What an incredible adventure thanks for sharing this! And I thought skiing at Mammoth 11 days from June 30th to July 14th was awesome! Did my own little private mostly mogul/some freestyle personnel summer ski camp. Really tightened up my descending mogul lines actually. But you were FLYING so I tip my hat to you Jens. Thanks again!
@@StompItTutorials Oh yes indeed, I had such a wonderful time! Even better having learned some tips and tricks from you! I have so much to practice now, it's awesome! Yup skiing is my #1 too. Be well mate!
How long do paragliding helmets last, how often do you need to replace them. HP Openview logos on the helmet.HP and HPE split 7 years ago! Great video either way and welcome to the club.
Brow i really enjoe your video, I want to know hows your evolution, ok ! Don’t stop to make this fun videos. Congrats and be welcome to the pilots fun team!!!
Was fun seeing this. I used to paraglide myself but ended up having too many hobbies with too much traveling distance (living in the Mittelland and wanting to ski, bike, hike, paraglide, be in a sports club etc.). So after 5 years, 140 flights and 4 times missed practical test i quit. Regarding the practical test, you have to do landings in a 30m circle in Switzerland (as one of the exams). I once had the person infront of me (like 30 seconds between us on landing) crash into the car parked like 10 m next to the circle - focus gone. One other time a guy was flying an RC plane on the landing place right until i went into final - focus not on the circle. Another time it lift me up so much on base so i started making S-turns. But soon was at the point that the next guy was there as well and he had priority. So i was flying behind the corn field to land - not in the circle. And yes, one time it was purely on me... At this point i was like: f*** that s*** and stopped... and there are not that many days in the year where i really want to fly. So without being somewhere, where I can easily go for a post-work flight or on an afternoon or so, i probably won't start again.
Wow... When your instructor say "stop", you definitively need to stop. It's better to stop when your feet are still on the ground than going up with an issue on your glider... This is very very very important... Like, lives may depend on it...
@@StompItTutorials Great! And hope you added the abort scenario on your take-off procedure :) Like, i have a key on my glider, i abort. I have a very strange feeling about my wing, i abort. I hear people hailing me, i abort. And so on :) Safe flights!
Noone of the beginner pilots looked up at the wing after it inflated before take off. That creates bad habits for their solo flights. Imagine having a cravate on the wing, when the instructor repeated to STOP. When someone shouts stop, you always stop, even if you don't see a point and you have actually looked up right before.
It's actually not a good habit to visually check the canopy during forward launch. Long story short, given the typical conditions that necessitates forward, looking up (particularly in new pilots) may introduce a short pause (wing unloading) or directional disorientation. Best way to train for proper forward is to build an accurate sense of wing condition thru the feel on the risers and brakes.
Speaking as an instructor (decades RE-training pilots) I've had to spend a LOT of time braking the dangerous 'taught' practice of "looking up at the wing during launch". I've lost count (while flying at 'open' sites) of the number of messed up launches due to pilots 'checking wing' once its overhead! Pilots SHOULD of course fully check the wing long before it can lift them off the hill, teaching pilots to FEEL the wing (via risers) is a significantly safer practice!
‘If you don’t have fun you will stop doing it’. That can be applied to many sports and many people make these decisions without realising that fact. Why is fun and safety seen as two ends of the spectrum. Why can’t you have a bit of both? Well done all.
My advice. Take up paragliding when you are younger and stronger. I started at 63 with some extra weight and not in shape and it took me months. Also if you can afford it, take lessons 4 or more days a week. Not just weekends. If the weather is bad you can go 3-4 weeks without flying. Last practice kiting if you can’t get to a lesson. Kiting is 80% of the work. I found thermaling intutive, I try to think like a hawk. If I feel lift I turn. If I lose lift I try to go back to where the lift was.
Fair enough Id be pissed off too as an instructor. Having been flying with a few instructors now a part of the mistake was on them too. They never taught us how to abort a start nor said much or anything about having to abort. Now knowing how to abort by pulling on one side of the B lines made me feel safe to abort. Shit happens when nervous and hyped up to run and fly.
These guys made better progress in 5 hours than me in 5 days (not sure though how many my successful training hours there were in total). Now trying to figure out, why it turned out this way.
19:14 not just some "silly mistake" that's literally a "you can't come back here, no refunds" fault. There's no amount of hype or amp you can be to willfully ignore an abort command. Ticking Time Bomb
Agree. Just walk fast then maybe run if needed. But... it was so fun doing those first tiny flights wanting to jump to make it happen due to lack of a mountain and wind.
