First vehicle i owned soon as i got my driver’s license at age 16 was a jeep wrangler (gift from my grandpa) 29 now and got a 2021 4runner (sr5) AND I LOVE IT SO MUCH, i guess we all have to grow up sometimes. Edit: not bashing on jeeps, but the more you age the more bills pile up, rent, life insurance, cell phone bills,...etc..etc..the time i had the jeep it was in the shop more than a dozen times and i know toyota’s reliability is top notch, so that’s one less problem i gotta think about.
I've can say that I've never been stranded or broke down in my 88', sr5 , 4x4. 350K it's always been there for me, it's the 2nd. Woman in my life I've been told , I've used cruise control @ 65 mph in devil's race track, death valley, fun, the fuel pump in the tank has never gone out like it does In so many domestic trucks " what a joke". The 22re is bullet proof with OEM stuff but not after rebuilding with after market heads & headers, becareful there. It's the best purchase I ever made in my life.
I have this exact 4Runner. Love it. I take it on 2-track trails deep into the Rockies. It works. I have it lifted with Nitto Ridge Grapplers and NFAB rock sliders.
Nice dude I got a channel too and my 2021Barcelona red SR5 premium is featured. You got things I don’t on your TRD👍 crawl, lockers, reclining rear seat, wheels, 4wd shifter, nice rig dude.
The amber lights are the only true fog lights because the white lights reflect off of the fog, nice truck it’s a nice setup with the lift and tires good luck with it.
Thank ya buddy, that was bad ass, loved the video, you don't sound like a robot. you can have that 4 runner for 32 years just like my 88 sr5 1st owner 4x4 , runs great. My wife just went up to outside Portland, Oregon, a dealership and got everything we wanted outside of cali on a trd off rd premium, didn't bother looking anymore in the bay area (7 million people competing), we got all the packages we wanted and a great deal on a 1 year turned in previously leased 12,000 miles like new, started @ $41,990. Saved ~$5,000. from new. The only thing we paid extra was an Oregon cooperate opt. tax of $ 169. and plan ticket one way $ 212. and a tank of gas during the trip back to northern California. We also paid for some extra extended full warranty on electrical components & drivetrain 100,000/84 months. $2,900. everybody has to pay california taxes & DMV still. Total approx.$51,000. My long winded point being, we couldn't find shit in the bay area and I think the northern states get better packages for cheaper, but I don't know, oh what a feelin.
I have the exact pkg you have. Mine is a 2019 white / blk interior with the TRD wheels. I actually ordered a TRD pro but after waiting almost 4 months and no delivery date in sight our local dealer got our TRD premium in and we went ahead and bought it and gave up on the Pro.No regrets with 42,000 miles it has been a great vehicle for us.Recently almost traded it for a GX460 but decided not to and now plan on keeping it as long as i have had my 2003 sequoia with 201,000 miles
Correction for you about tire size and ground clearance. 2 inches of tire equals 1 inch on either side of the axel. Only 1 inch is below the axel so you only gain 1 inch of clearance for 2 inches of tire. But it is a nice upgrade to "lift" without touching the suspension, especially in the back because the pumpkin is now 1 inch up over the rocks. Just do a Body Mount chop to get rid of the rub.
I also got glass screen protector for the display, I heard alot of people complaning about being scratched from dealer prep, works awesome and cheap. you have a lot of miles already, I have @ 6400 miles, not a daily driver though. I bought mine for the same reasons you did, good choice bro
Hey Thomas, Appreciate the comments. My infotainment was slightly scratched from the dealership. Something I took notice after I had driven off the lot. It bothered me for a little while but I've gotten used to it. And yeah, I do have a lot of miles. haha. I put roughly about 1500 miles in the first three days since I drove it back from Washington state to California. So far, I've taken it to Utah, multiple trips into Nevada and some National Parks around California. These things will last forever and while I am not worried about the high mileage (because I am taking it to places I want to explore and see) I am mindful of how much I have. Thanks for checking out the video!
Nice rig, im getting a 2024 trd off road premium plus, same color, it happened very unexpectedly, been doing alot of research since i made the decision to get it, glsd the opportunity arose, i hope the 2025 models will prove themselves the way these models have, in today's world, the working class people really deserve a quality product we can count on!!! I've been a toyota truck guy for years, can't beat the longevity u get from them. Unfortunately, i live in a salt state & that eats them up, i have a 98 tacoma ext cab i bought in Tennessee in 09, put a 6" lift on & do not drive in the salt, drove out to alaska once, down to Florida several times, it has 220,000 miles on it now & still a real good vehicle, plan on passing it & the new 4 runner down to my nephews when its time for me to be done, hard to find simple quality products that last anymore, looking forward to start modifying the new one!!
Can't agree with you more. Toyota are built to last forever. Even the new "hybridized" Tacoma and Tundra will last - I still see 1st gen Priuses on the road. That speaks volume! It might not have all the bells and whistles you see in BMWs and Mercedes but it sure will outlast them. I've been a Toyota owner all my life so I might be bias but it's hard to stir away from its reliability and longevity. I also plan to keep this 4Runner. Thanks for watching!
Those xenon depot are crazy bright! Worth every penny. I have mine already for about a year and a half. They are starting to show its age though. It's not as bright as when I originally got it.
Excellent review on a sweet rig, also like your choice of mods. Don't worry so much about fixin your grammar I never do. All my videos are one shot one take, I don't take it too serious it's just a hobby for me.
Thanks! I’m learning how challenging it can be to relay information, talk to yourself on the camera and make sure the lighting/sound is good. For the other you tubers who do it well and make it look easy, I now understand how much work goes into it. I enjoy it though. ✌️
Just got my 2022 Toyota 4runner TRD off road premium..51k out the door. I have upgraded wheels, black out package, pro skid Plates..Barcelona Red!!!. I bought BF Goodrich KO2's immediately. I am going to black out the front and back bumpers. Have no idea why Toyota keeps the Grey bumper s. Overall I'm extremely happy. This truck is a head turner!!. Love talking trash to Jeep owners!!!
I actually like those wheels. I know that wider tires look cooler, but one must really ask WHY they feel they need them. I personally think a stock width and maybe one width wider is enough. The KO2 looks great no matter how wide they are.
I’ve got a 2019 TRD off-road with the same height lift and 285’s also, except I have SPC upper control arms which have the most adjustability of all the UCA’s especially caster. No rubbing for me at all even aired down in any situation!
great info ! very nice rig !thank you!! purchased 21’ trail edition wish i’d of gone with trd o.r.. just really liked the army green color & not a fan of leather interior.. in time would like 285’s , upgrade suspension with focus on leveling & maybe look into e-locker. only upgrades so far are white led interior lighting, ceramic coated with ppf and last year when i bought it had it undercoated (live in snow belt)..🥶
Yep .. would be nice to have the dual climate control, but the fan speed buttons that come with it cant be found reaching without taking your eyes off the road. I'm a fan of the large knobs ! Nice review man! I think I'll do the 175 size tires. I dont want to take off the flaps.
great reviews bro! love the trd offroad 4r. I notice you got about 17-18 mpg, which isn't great but not too bad. How is the lane departure assist ? When I had the 2018 Sienna , it beeps non-stop and can be very annoying, so I have it turns off most of the time. Also it is good to know the backseat can recline like that, as my 2000 land cruiser can do the same.
I’ve got the same year and trim as Francis so I’ll chime in. It’s about the same as the Sienna it sounds like haha. Around town I keep it off but if I’m in heavy traffic on the highway or going longer distances where I might get a lil tired I usually turn it on.
I've got a 2021 of the very same version in solid black on order. It's supposed to be here by mid-July....I just can't wait. There's a reason these things are still built in Japan. To keep the quality and reputation up on top. And coming from a company like Toyota, that means the best of an already long line of high quality vehicles. Toyota's "garbage" still has a longer life expectancy than the best everyone else has to offer.
Love your truck! This is the best setup one can have from factory. I never knew KDSS was optional on TRD ORP. If you don’t mmd me asking - What did you pay out the door without any taxes and title.
Nice ride I also have a 2020 trd orp, in super white, very capable, non kdss I have bilstein 5100's, wheeler t1/t13 coil springs, jba uca, driver side lean front and rear spacers, rsg flat sliders, rci steel engine/transm skids and lfd steel transfer skid, I did the diff/ locker breather(scuba) kit just like wanderlost. I still have stock dunflop tires, going to get Toyo AT3 stock so i don't rub. just did lasfit LED dome, map and cargo lights, those are nice. Anyhow nice rig Francis!
@@francisngo I have seen no difference, still getting between 17 and 18 mpg, but I would definitely say they are stronger than aluminum, I hit a rock on the front skid hard and no damage or dent like aluminum would, just a scrape. but i don't have a fridge, rtt or front/rear bumper. I would like a winch /front bumper, not in the works now, as I don't wheel crazy. the lfd skid has the muffler clearance, so it doesn't rub and rattle
Failed to do your research pal. TRD Pro also comes with a JBL stereo and dual zone climate control. Since you opted for the TRD ORP, you should’ve ordered with the KDSS as that is the only real reason to go with the TRD ORP in stock form. A secondary reason for the TRD ORP are the wheels which are slightly wider than the TRD Pro wheels.
The ORP also comes with a sunroof standard, heated seats, and he mentioned his desire for the softer leather (leather just does look and feel nicer then cloth in the long run). As a daily driver these little things add up. KDSS is nice to have as long as it’s under warranty. Requires deep pockets to keep maintained if any issues pop up after that.
I'm looking into the same model u have...real quick, so u did not need to do a body mount chop correct to fit 285s? It's a great size tire. Not looking to go any bigger myself just want a little taller and more aggressive tire. Liked the info thanks. Have a good day
Hey thanks for the video man. I got the same exact car used 45k miles on it. Considering doing the headlight leds and bigger tires. Dumb question- i don’t wanna lift my 4runner, can i put 275/70/r17 on the same wheels? Will that rub? What is the best led headlight bulbs you recommend? Thanks man!
do you get flashed at all with your Xenon pro LED low beam bulbs? also if your tire went up in size by 2" you actually only gain half of that in ground clearance fyi.
Yes I have had been highbeamed for the Xenon LED Low beams. They are bright and positioned lower but I still get it from time to time from smaller vehicles due to the lift. And yes, thank you. I have come aware after the video was published. Thanks for watching and the comment!
Just sharing. I’ve owned 4Runner & GX with KDSS. I will never own a Toyota SUV without it. I have no plans to lift over 3”. I love my 2020 TRD ORP. A great vehicle.
What phone mount do you use? What window vent visors are those? I am going in tomorrow (10/11/2021) to hopefully get a 2022 T4R LR OR-P. As most owners I am already looking at mods. I already have Baja Designs & KC Flex Era 3 lights that I am giong to mount up. Just have to decide which ones to put where and what controller to get.
The rain guards help keep the power windows less wet and helps prevent future switch corrosion years down the road. That's the only possible issue later for replacement. Toyota should redesign that location.
The lift did not affect the operation of the Toyota safety sensor for me at all. I did not have to do any recalibration. For me, The sensor works the same way it did without a lift. Although, I can't speak for everyone as I have heard stories where people's sensor was thrown off but those numbers seem to be very minor.
Yes I am very happy with the RSG sliders. I like the kick out because it protects the vehicle in tight situations and can be used as a step to reach the roof rack.
My mindset around this was - "less systems to maintain and when installing a suspension kit, I don't have to worry about additional modifications as it shows for some suspension kits. TRD Pro doesn't have it so I didn't want it." The current drive on the 4Runner doesn't bother me and by upgrading, I was able to eliminate the nose dive. For me, The benefits of not having KDSS outweighed the benefits of having KDSS.
@@francisngo Well you are wrong 100%. Its easy to install suspension and maintain. The articulation is much better with KDSS and the Pro model is not made for rock crawling like a KDSS model. Shoulda done your research. I owned both and KDSS is a better system. Live and learn huh.
@@michaeldbhawker3556 You are right. I learned about that when I did my research as well. I even test drove one with and without one and to me, I didn’t feel that big of a difference. At least not big enough to justify the additional cost. Call me old school, but I wanted to keep the suspension simple. When I said “maintain”, I meant, if KDSS was to ever break, it would require the entire system to be replaced. Something that would cost more money and take a lot of time to do (at least for me, since I installed the lift myself out of my apartment drive way with limited and basic tools). For someone who may have a private garage or the time/money, it might not be a big deal but for me it was something I’d have to consider when I purchased the car.
@@francisngo There is a difference in body roll on and off road. If articulation in awkward terrain is not on your agenda then a TRD Pro type rig is your thing. But make no mistake a non KDSS rig is not as capable in gnarly conditions.
Question: Any truth to story that Toyota 4Runners don't do well with after market headlights? Because 2 years after I had them installed on my 2019 Off Road Premium my dash lit up. Dealer removed them and replaced .with factory ones.
Hi, I'm having a hard time getting the 4runner I want in California but saw one i want in Nevada. Do you have an issue registering the car in CA? I assume it's a 50 state emission vehicle right?
I had zero issues registering the car in CA. When I purchased the vehicle in WA, the dealership gave me a temporary permit, allowing me enough days to drive the truck back from WA. Afterwards, I just had to complete a couple of paperworks at the DMV to get my plates. In addition, I had to get the car smogged (even if it's new - due to CA rules).
Yes because the vehicle was bought out of state, California requires any purchase of a new or used out of state will have to be smogged. Afterwards, the paperwork will be sent to DMV where your registration will be considered complete.
KDSS means more parts and more maintenance. It's great for road driving but I was willing to compromise that for the ability to work on my car and add a 3" suspension.
I want a 4Runner Trd off road premium I guess it’s called I want the sunroof and leather. I don’t need the Trd pro it’s a waste of 10g just for the pro badges. It’s been a pain trying to buy one dealing with salesman in Washington state “ Seattle “ is horrible
How are the Softex seat to sit on? Do they stay feeling cool or do they make your back sweaty? I live in Florida where it’s HOT and am worried about synthetic leather being uncomfortable that way. Nice rig, BTW. I like the Barcelona Red as well.
Sooooo much better than leather and previous “pleather” type crap I’ve experienced. In Oregon, I know, but it was 116 a few weeks back. Not sweaty. Little textured, or porous or something. Besides the ac comes on cold soo fast.
Nice video!!. Question. I am currently looking for a 2021 TRD Pro Off Road or the Venture, have you heard anything about paint issues? I've heard that the Bright White color has recalls because it does not come with clear coat.
Thanks. I have heard about the super white being recalled but I don't know if it's because it doesn't come with clear coat. While Toyota makes great reliable vehicles, they are not known for the best quality paint. I had a 06 Corolla and the paint on the hood and roof started to get oxidized after several years. The front was filled with rock chips. If you are considering getting a 4Runner, I would recommend getting bug deflectors for the hood and ceramic coating. You could also get paint protection film. Labor and installation is costly but it's worth it if you are planning to keep the vehicle for a long time.
I got the super white and chose a 3m coating for the hood, door spots where scratches happen. Skipped ceramic. Love the coating and did full hood so can’t see the line, glad I did it. It was cheaper than a lift and tires! Hahahahhaa *I watch for recalls on the entune/Toyota app and none .. yet! Great video!!!! Awesome valuable info and something different than others.

@@ferlottes Then I may have misunderstood lol - thought that was the big difference between the Pro and other TRD models.
First time I’ve seen a review with a full tank. Haha!
gotta stay loaded!
Nice review! Why did you not want kdss?
Have a good day
Taller tires raise ground clearance by half the difference in diameter.
my next dream car
It's also my dream car!
Thanks man!
Hey man, cool 4R. Did you put trim covers on the dash around your radio head unit? If so, links appreciated!
Nope - This is stock!
do you get flashed at all with your Xenon pro LED low beam bulbs? also if your tire went up in size by 2" you actually only gain half of that in ground clearance fyi.
Yes I have had been highbeamed for the Xenon LED Low beams. They are bright and positioned lower but I still get it from time to time from smaller vehicles due to the lift. And yes, thank you. I have come aware after the video was published. Thanks for watching and the comment!
Nice review from a mostly Virgin 4runner!!
Congratulations on the car... I am interested to know why you didn’t want KDSS on your truck?
More systems to worry about and maintain. It made the aftermarket suspension install easier.
Just sharing. I’ve owned 4Runner & GX with KDSS. I will never own a Toyota SUV without it. I have no plans to lift over 3”. I love my 2020 TRD ORP. A great vehicle.
A Jeep bag to keep all of my junk.....shots fired......Well Played!! :D
Nice job. Good review.
Waiting for my 2000 to die, maybe I will get a 2020, or a at the rate it's going 2030?
What phone mount do you use? What window vent visors are those?
I am going in tomorrow (10/11/2021) to hopefully get a 2022 T4R LR OR-P. As most owners I am already looking at mods. I already have Baja Designs & KC Flex Era 3 lights that I am giong to mount up. Just have to decide which ones to put where and what controller to get.
Very nice I’m looking for the rain guard’s for mine which model did you choose and how do you like them....
The rain guards help keep the power windows less wet and helps prevent future switch corrosion years down the road. That's the only possible issue later for replacement. Toyota should redesign that location.
Did the lift kit affect the operation of your dynamic cruise control ? Were there any necessary recalibration?
The lift did not affect the operation of the Toyota safety sensor for me at all. I did not have to do any recalibration. For me, The sensor works the same way it did without a lift. Although, I can't speak for everyone as I have heard stories where people's sensor was thrown off but those numbers seem to be very minor.
Very helpful. Thanks
Are you happy with the RSG rock sliders? Do you recommend the sliders with a bump out?
Yes I am very happy with the RSG sliders. I like the kick out because it protects the vehicle in tight situations and can be used as a step to reach the roof rack.
Good choice on the options and give yourself bonus marks for not putting another grey vehicle on the road. K.I.S.S. > KDSS
looks good man
Could you put a link for the ceramic coating kit? Thanks.
Sure! bit.ly/3qtIfMm
I bought the same model but a 2021. And it’s pulling to the right hard. Like it’s driving it self. I thought the tire went down. Nope
Found out from the dealer the alignment was off.
why did you not want kdss? it is a game changer off-roading and on road stability.
No issues with the Xenon Depot LEDs that I have had for almost two years now.
@@francisngo Thanks Francis!
So being from California myself, I was wondering about the smog and emissions stuff being that you bought it out of state??
Yes because the vehicle was bought out of state, California requires any purchase of a new or used out of state will have to be smogged. Afterwards, the paperwork will be sent to DMV where your registration will be considered complete.
vancouver washington? Had no idea there was a vancouver in the states haha
I didnt either until I bought this car. It's 20 minutes north of Portland, OR
@@francisngo Actually it's right across the Columbia River from Portland not 20 miles.
Are these headlights highway-legal in California ? Thanks 👍🏻
Yes Xenon Depot LEDs are street legal in California and the Diode Dynamics SS3 Pro are as well
Why did you purposefully choose a 4Runner without KDSS? Any particular reason or rationale?
KDSS means more parts and more maintenance. It's great for road driving but I was willing to compromise that for the ability to work on my car and add a 3" suspension.
18.1 mpg is good since you lifted suspension and added bigger tires.
My new Tundra is the same color. I use Durafracs for the winter. Factory Michelins for the summer
Nice! I don't see a lot of Barcelona Red Tundras in my area so you got yourself a rare one.
@@francisngo Ironically i wanted Calvary blue but was NA. Barcelona red was second choice. Injace seen about 4 or 5 where I live in that color.
Great info
Thanks for watching!
Any shakes in your steering at high speeds? Thanks
No change in driving except that it does feel heavier with the bigger tires.
I want a 4Runner Trd off road premium I guess it’s called I want the sunroof and leather. I don’t need the Trd pro it’s a waste of 10g just for the pro badges. It’s been a pain trying to buy one dealing with salesman in Washington state “ Seattle “ is horrible
Going from a 31 to 33 inch tire gives you 1 extra inch of ground clearance, not 2!
Can we discuss the Class Action Lawsuit on Toxic Mold in the HVAC of New Toyota's ???
..
Did the 2.5 inch lift affect the front safety sensor?
No it did not.
Did you replace the halogen bulb with LED or you got new 2021 headlight?
I replaced them with Xenon Depot LED. I don't think the 2021 LEDs are compatible with previous years.
@@francisngo oh ok. Thanks
Sweet
no wheel spacers ? nice set up!
Awesome video. You don’t need to make all those notes every time you flub a word, we know what you mean.
Nice review
How are the Softex seat to sit on? Do they stay feeling cool or do they make your back sweaty? I live in Florida where it’s HOT and am worried about synthetic leather being uncomfortable that way. Nice rig, BTW. I like the Barcelona Red as well.
Sooooo much better than leather and previous “pleather” type crap I’ve experienced. In Oregon, I know, but it was 116 a few weeks back. Not sweaty. Little textured, or porous or something. Besides the ac comes on cold soo fast.
Thanks for the reply,@@annapartlow2926, handy to know.
Never buy a leather sit in hot climate. And besides, it's more expensive.
Hi Francis, do you have KDSS on your OR?
He states no KDSS
the red is the best color, by far
Still have this gorgeous vehicle?
Yup still do!
How did you get the tailpipe soot around your mouth?
Did the lift affect the tss system
Take the sticker off on your overhead console, it's time bro :)
It’s so small I don’t even notice it up there. 😅
If you increased tire diameter by 2", wouldn't you only gain 1" of ride height, not 2"?
You are right and I was wrong in the video.
Why not the KDSS?
What is the best mpg you got on a long trip?
With the tires and roof top tent, I average about 14-16MPG. If I am traveling on a highway downhill, I may see 18MPG.
Your dry tone comment about cheap jeep bag 😂😂😂
Victory...
High beams as daytime running lights?
Yes, from factory, the 4Runner's DRL is just a lower output of the high beams. With Xenon Depot, I am able to keep the same setup but with LEDs.
How come no KDSS?
More mechanical systems. More potential issues and maintenance.
Very nice.
