  • It’s a problem most of us home-based players run into. We want the sound and feeling of a cranked up, but we can’t actually crank an amp. BUT... with a couple pieces of reasonably priced gear, you can get an unlimited amount of amazing sounds at bedroom levels.
    This is my setup for a DIY amp attenuator/oxbox.

    Great video! This is exactly my setup and you're right it's fantastic, I just have one thing to add. The reason studio monitors work so well is because they're 'short throw' speakers with smaller cones than an amp. They're designed to be heard sat right in front of them, rather than projecting their sound far and filling a room.
    My amp is a 20w Blackstar Core ID and even when I put that on the same (ish) volume as the monitors, its so much more booming and full that I worry the neighbours will hear it through the walls. The monitors begin to lose their punch even just by stepping away from my desk. Thanks for the video, I think this could help a lot of people

      Ah, that’s a good point about the monitors. I didn’t even think of that. I used my monitor primarily for video editing, but now I use it all the time like this and it’s awesome.

    I really appreciate your content having relevance to middle class guitarist dads and not just another gear porn extravaganza by some virtuouso who plays nightly in highly paid cover bands! Don’t get me wrong, I watch those dudes too, but you definitely hitting closer to home for a lot of us

    Thanks! I went that route at one point and I enjoyed it but still dig my tube amps. The basement is my workplace and guitar/amp room so I can play at a good volume downstairs which makes all the difference, especially for gain.

    If my neighbors can’t come over to the house to hear me play I’ve got to do something to brighten their day. Crank that amp!
    Let rock’n roll echo through the lonely streets where prisons have no key.
    Let rock’n roll ring! 🎸
    Pissing off the neighbourhood isn’t rock’n roll it’s just being a jackass, but if you can mow your lawn in the afternoon you can play a little loud for a little while too. 🎸 Thanks for the vid.

    The Spark Amp may not sound as good, but for around $250, plus the ease of use and the chance of using it via the phone or tablet and putting a backing track or song and selecting a tone in seconds, makes it an amazing option! And sounds great at low volumes, and you can also put headphones, or connect directly to a DAW and record as well. If you have a chance get one, would be great if some day you can review one.

    Pretty much the same setup I use in my studio - easy to upgrade from there if you want as well. These days too things like the Neural DSP Quad Cortex and Line 6 Helix, even the almost (dare I say it) outdated Kemper, work as interfaces as well for guitar/bassists, although at a much higher price point. The BIAS Amp II plugin is also pretty versatile, I'd recommend that for beginner digital amp users. For more niche-oriented players the Archetype plugins are unreal (see the Cory Wong sig for the cleanest cleans you can get... I'd suggest the Tosin Abasi sig for versatility). Amp sims have come such a long way in the last couple years, it really is a treat to have studio quality tones so easily accessible.

    Irig HD2 works great as a guitar interface and comes with the basic version of Amplitube (I’m using it with studio monitors in the same setup that you have here)

    That’s a pretty cool idea. I hate earphones too. We don’t realize how fatigued our ears can get after a practice on headphones 🎧. A two notes captor could also be another option. I’m leaning that way. But the pc isn’t in my den. Oh boy.

    Great video! What about when you use a pedal? Does it go straight to the interface?

    • @guitarmovies
      @guitarmovies  3 года назад +1

      Yeah in that case it would go Guitar > Pedal > Interface > Computer. Or I just use the pedals inside of Amplitube/Logic.

    Do you think the Amplitude/Axe bundle would be worth it? It's like $299/399? I've really been wanting to check it out but been kinda gun shy on pulling the trigger for it.

    • @guitarmovies

      I have the Amplitube Max bundle. I love it, but it’s hard to say if it’s worth it for someone else.

    Great setup. But there's some latency. At least 5-6 ms in this case, possibly more.

    A simpler and cheaper option would be the JHS Little Black Box or a DIY L-Pad attenuator

    • @guitarmovies
      @guitarmovies  3 года назад

      Yep. It's also massively limited in the amount of sounds you can create compared to what I was talking about.

    • @aayushkhare656
      @aayushkhare656 3 года назад

      @@guitarmovies True, but its till cheaper right, especially if someone has a custom built amp/ cab or pedal.

    I wonder if those of us that own something like Stomps and Iridiums could benefit from this instead of the more expensive frfr speakers...
