Even Finnish made, not just designed. Now you have to make a visit, the factory is on a beautiful lake front. Of course as a Finn I have had Genelecs at home for at least 15 years. Oh yeah and don't forget the chocolate. Fazer beats any Swiss or Belgian chocolate.

    • @McSlobo

@@TheDrunkenScoundrel Finnish language being from a completely different language family (Fenno-Ugric) than other Nordic (Germanic) is actually full of vowels. In some dialects you can form meaningful sentences with just vowels. The word Genelec however is not a Finnish word. We don't have native Finnish words starting with G and C is a foreign letter to us. If it was written in a Finnish way, it would be Kenelekki. No, I'm not kidding, we dont have words ending with k either, so the only obvious ending is kki.

I bought the captor X when it came out, pre ordered - this was actually right around lockdown time, I remember since I ordered it in hopes of getting it for a silent stage gig I had coming up (it was postponed obviously)… at any rate, it came during the summer of 2020 and Ive used it every day since. It was a lockdown savor, allowing me to record and play while stuck at home and has since become an indispensable recording and live tool. Really incredible piece of equipment for the money. Highly recommend from a recording/touring player

Game changer, guys! I live in an apartment and have valve amps and even though they have master volumes, turning down the master is ok, but it’s just not the same as letting them off the leash a bit. Running my AC15 into a Captor X and a monitor, and I had the Top Boost cranked and the master up high and got great tone and could talk over it. Incredible.

I got both the Captor and the X, the latter being one of the best pieces of gear I have ever bought.
I run my amps cranked through it, even more than I would through cabs or built in speakers.
The room mic’s don’t do justice here of course. 70 dB is ridiculously quiet.
I paired my X with some bigger monitors that work well from super quiet to instant feedback volume.
Below certain volumes your tone won’t be inspiring anyway so if I really need to go so low I rather use headphones.
Closer to 80-85 dB is better and still much quieter than the 110+ of a cranked 50W Marshall.
In addition, since I started messing around with the X I discovered how important cabs are to the overall tone. It’s something that I as an amateur had overlooked.
Really great stuff and I am so happy I bought the X

I got the Burgera PS1 to attenuate my 100W Orange Rockerverb and 20W Friedman JJ Jr. going into a 2x12 for basement jams, and it works perfectly. I can crank those amps, and lower the volume on the attenuator, and I still get that huge thick sound of the amp and speakers that works for home use. I do think that is an important consideration, because it's impossible to fully emulate the sound of large speakers in a cab, but this is still a good options.

When I was a teenager I bought a Carvin X100-B (one of the OG models) and had a Tom Scholz Power Soak to lower the volume. I loved that rig, and still have it, but there was no decent IR or speaker simulation of course. Over the years going to college and living in apartments in the 90's I had to stop using it and switched to an OG Rockman, which I also still have. I never use either of those anymore since I've spent a small fortune on various modelers over the years, from the PODxt right on through a Kemper Stage and others. It's been so long since I've played though an actual tube amp I've forgotten what it's actually like! I don't doubt what you're saying in this video in the least. If I'd had a load box with current IR tech the way things are now, I may have never gone the modeler route. Such cool stuff available now no matter which route someone wants to go!

Don't get confused by the attenuation ability. I've been using the Captor (not X) for a long time and in conjuction with my Plexi (volume on 6-7) the -20db seem totally not realistic! It's still pretty pretty loud, way above bedroom level! So the attenuation part of the captor isn't great really. BUT I do almost all of my recordings with the Captor. Works brilliantly. A very organinc and vivid signal that you get from the unit and that you can work with in your DAW. The Wall of Sound Software is cool, but nowadays I'm only using really good IRs. Honestly, the whole DynIR thing and promises by Torpedo are exciting in the beginngn, but once you have used for example a great York Audio IR, you'll never return to Wall of Sound. Mixed feeling here overall, still I don't wanna miss the Captor for recording purposes.

And when you are playing live but can’t take a 4 x 12 cab to the venue you can go straight to the PA and use in ears. This has been my set up since 2017 not changing it until it goes bang. Playing through a valve amp is not about feel it’s learning how to play the amp digital is sterile. Plu the torpedo live has a led VU meter

Looks like an interesting solution. I'm curious what will happen if you do a comparison - real amp + attenuator + IR loader against a digital modeller that supports IR, with the same IR file loaded on both. That would completely expose any difference between the amp sim and the real amp.

My home rig is 15 year old vox VT 30 modified with a Jenson speaker on the vox AC 30 setting, I have cheap silver horse klon in-between the amp and my Harley Benton vintage series custom telecaster. I love it I don't think I could get a better sound in my small flat with paper thin walls. Even a five watt tube amp is way too loud for my gaff. I had the landlord round a few years ago with sound recording equipment because the neighbors didn't like it when I got my fender 2x10 tube amp almost to number 2 on the volume knob, each to their own though isn't it, whatever floats your boat, I mean for me I've got to be realistic I've got no use for anything bigger than the combo I've got, it's the just the nature of home playing in a house that isn't detached.

I've thought about getting one of these, but instead got one of the JHS Little Black Boxes and put that in my loop of my 120W 5150 head into a 4x12. Crack it and at bedroom levels. But anymore I mostly run my laptop into an audio interface (Focusrite) and powered speakers (JBL),with the Neural DSP Plugins. For $100 they sound amazing, have effects and stereo. Just another option if you play at home. Mesa's, SLO, 5150, etc. I'm at my desk anyway so makes things easy and quick. Save as many presets as you want and use a Behringer FCB1010 (or other midi pedal) and scroll and turn effects on/off.

Bit too spendy to use with a little 4 watt DIY champ clone into my 2x12, but having heard the name Bugera in this video and then read about them I'm going to buy one of those power soaks - just the job for me at home.

Running a Captor 8 between my Victory Sheriff and a 1x12 cab in my living room. Definitely don’t love the 20dB pad but it’s not terrible. I wonder if I should try running the dual output of the amp to both the captor and my cab. Still could route the line out to a studio monitor or maybe a FRFR. Should be said, this is most useful for recording to DAW. I didn’t need the X because you get Wall of Sound plug-in and a couple of IRs for free.

I have the THR for some years. It's a great package and sits well on the desk. But... I'm a geek and I build my own tube amp with 12AX7 and just 5 Watt. I also build a loudspeaker as a 2x12. The amp has drive and master volume, but with full drive and a low master volume, it was still to loud for the kids. So I build in a headphone amp with different analog cabinet simulations, but I forget that the tube amp always need a load = cabinet. So, the next thing is to build a silent mode for it.

I suspect you'd need a bigger active monitor to handle the lower range frequencies.

Big speakers can go quiet too and you keep the low end
Put a compressor before your amp and an attenuator after your amp. You get the "air moving" effect

I bought a captor 4 hoping the -20 db out would be a suitable practice volume using a 1964 bandmaster. It wasn't, but that might be because my drummer mics his kit, and has 2 18" subs behind him and a full range monitor.

I have had a captor x and put my nice amps through to my genelec 8020. nice enough but an hx stomp is infinitely better sounding as well as easier and more versatile

The results of the sound with the captor depend on the amp for me. I played a PRS MT 15 through it and it just kinda lost all its tightness compared to being cranked into a cab. My Hughes & Kettner Grandmeister sounds better through it but the captor is kinda defeating the purpose because that amp has a built in Red Box and you can go straight into your interface.

I have the bugera psa1 and a nice 4x12 that i use at my apartment with no complaints from the neighbors. If I close mic the cab I'm positive I could record great tones at home. The line out does leave much to be desired but it's jsut a power soak essentially

I had the captor but the volume cut was too much. The PS1 is a perfect solution for me too. Pity the line out is so crap but anyway, the attenuation is amazing.

Im surprised you guys havent taken a look at the Fryette Power Station PS-2 and PS-100! I think you'll be impressed! Ive been using two, live and home, through a 1959HW and a JTM45 (both acquired through Andertons I may add ;)) and Its ridiculous how transparent it is with not only the sound, but the feel. They don't have a cab sim built in them but you can run out of your cab at whisper volumes., or just use a cab sim pedal/software on computer. Also has an FX loop as its a re-amping box, sort of like the TAE but id argue sounds better even thought less techy.
Would be interesting to see//hear what you think. :)
