Another use: You can take the unit out of the cage and there is an RCA input inside which can be used as a line level input. Clearly you would destroy the warranty and UAD have said on other forums that it was probably used for testing. It definitely works however. This massively expands its use because you can run amp models or amp sims through it and just use it as an IR with no amp needed. Some people have drilled a hole in the back and made their own line-in jack going inside to the RCA jack and then put the cage back on.
the most useful ox review i've seen!
Very helpful. Thank you
Absolutely love that strat! Can you share any details about it?
Another thing you could do is use the OX as both an attenuator and as a means of running a stereo wet / dry / wet rig using only one amp. Unlike Western Electric's straightforward idea of using the OX's onboard delay and reverb as the only wet modulation effects, one could instead run the Ox's speaker simulated line outs 100% dry into a UA interface like the Apollo X8p. Doing that would let you send that dry signal to many parallel stereo effects chains in UA's console, allowing you to use any of UA's plugins as your wet effects with sub-2ms of latency (far below the threshold for human perception). You could also opt to use some of the Apollo's line outs to send your dry signal through actual outboard gear or pedal loops and back. Then you could mix all of the parallel effect channels to your liking (in stereo and 100% wet, if desired) and send that mix via stereo line outs to a pair of powered FRFR monitors, positioned on either side of your real amp & cab (which is your in-the-room 100% dry center channel). Of course, the inclusion of a UA rack interface and whatever plugins adds a lot of expense, but it pales in comparison to the cost of actually building and maintaining a big vintage rack effects rig (e.g. UA's Dytronics CS-5 Tri-Stereo Chorus plug-in is $100, whereas the actual unit would run you $3,500+ by itself).
Hey Dave, how do you get the Ox's speaker simulated line outs 100% dry? I can't find a bypass switch in the OX app that bypasses all cabinets, microphone and OX effects
Hi, I liked your demo very much. Maybe you have an idea if Universal Audio will do another update
Love my ox
Great review. Can I connect just my amp head and 2 4x12 cabinets into Ox and use as just a load box/attenuator? Thx!
Great vid. Another use... I run it as means of getting a Wet Dry Wet rig...by keeping my amp central (attenuated via the Ox) and then run the L/R Ox outs to a pair of Headrush 8 inch FRFR cabs either side of my amp. The amp remains dry/unaffected and sounds like it should, but the Headrush frfr monitors have the Ox Cabs and effects - Rev/Delay/Comp/Eq as per stored preset. I am looking for a three way footswitch to allow me to turn say the Rev/Delay/Comp on/off individually in real time. The feed for recording to a DAW or front of house in live situations, is simply taken from the 'output' XLR from each Headrush monitor. Huge sound.
Great idea using the wet monitor outs to feed the FOH! But I guess that would necessitate not running the OX's stereo effects on 100% wet... Or you could do 100% wet OX effects via stereo line out, but also physically mic up your dry cab on stage, in order to send a totally dry center channel to FOH. Alternatively, if your amp head has a line out, you could run that into a cab sim and then direct to FOH for the dry center channel.
What does I R mean?
Came for the Ox Box knowledge and was wowed by some of the juicest strat tones I've ever heard...wtf...what amp were you playing through????
For alternative choice 1 you can also send the "Di Signal" to your power amp in on a high powered tube amp making your 10w vintage tweed amp a 100w stage monster... while using the other side with the traditional tweed cab algorithm to feed your stage monitors. 2. Same with the second idea... solo boost into your slave amp via power amp in (effects in) so your vintage amp gets bigger and louder for solos. 3. I absolutely agree about the dynamic response. Even now, I have a few different versions of attenuator to choose from for my high and low powered amps... and the OX seems to "feel" more natural and exciting just as an attenuator. When recording it feels just like my amps and I don't notice a real difference between my favorite set ups with real mics and the algorithms for ... like.. 90% of my work. For all it can do, it's not really expensive after all.
Is there anyway to use the attenuator on the cab in the room and the line out for effects to a powered wedge simultaneously? For a wet dry sound?
so did i get u right: you're NOT able to load an custom IR directly into the software? you have to mute the cab section to use it as a pure loadbox and then you can put on an custom IR later? (sry for crappy english)
is it possible to run the ox effects into the speaker cab , not using front of house option in live playing ?
Did you get an answer to this?
That damn box worth every euro it costs!!! 😎
Can you run the ox from pedalboard, say from a revivaldrive directly into the ox with no amp?
Exactly, wondering the same.. would be cool if that’s possible, could keep the kit really minimal. Strymon Iridium is good but wondering if this gets even closer to an amp without compromising too much.
do you need a traditional high wattage amp for the ox, or can preamp pedals work well with it?
you need the output from a tube power amp (which normally goes to the speaker) to go into the load box of the OX
Excellent vid, playing, and out of the box ideas Tom! Picked one up two years back and was interested to increase its uses, so thanks for that. Do not use Apple devices and struggle unfortunately getting access to the internals (Wifi w/ PC issues). So far the good has outweighed the bad... Keep up the good work!
Hey great video! I can only hear the effects/settings of the OX through the headphones but not through my amp is this normal?
Yes.
@@cardbored_ I wish there was an option to play the OX effects to my cab - love it’s reverb and delays.
So there's no way at to hear the IR cab Sims or effecs through the amp with the ox hooked up , I can only hear these features through headphones ? They doesn't sound right what about through monitors ?
Waza tube expander has improved on the ox and for me it no longer justifies its price.
Except the sound of the Waza is way worse. The effects sound terrible and the cabs are no where near as good as the OX. If features is the most important thing, get the Waza but if tone is the most important the OX is hands down best.
@@cardbored_ how about the a/d and d/a conversion? Does the OX box sound more accurate as compared to the TAE? Because i want to use my own irs anyway.
