    ** Why the ANZEIGE (=Ad) message? **
    According to german laws everyone has to mark their videos as advertisements as soon as there's a single "subject relevant" product, tag or link in it. Even if you didn't get paid for making that video. Sounds confusing and it really doesn't help the viewer to see which is a paid review and which isn't.
    --- The line of truth: Is this actually a paid review? No it isn't but some of the gear I'm using were sent to me by the brand to make videos with them. (I update this line for every video).

    Great comparison! I have the original captor and bought it over the Ox Box for all the reasons you mentioned. I like using just the cab section of my Neural DSP amp sims with it. There are several Two Notes IRs that I really like, but also have a few third party IRs I like to use as well. The Ox Box definitely looks and sounds great. I also like that it looks a bit simpler/straightforward to use, but at the end of the day, price and flexibility won out for me. The original Captor is a fifth of the cost of an Ox Box, so it's even a better deal. I use it nearly every day.

    After owning both I kept the Captor X and sold the Ox Box. In the end they are both great sounding products. But, after weeks of connection issues which I have a low threshold for troubleshooting, I happily sold the Ox Box. The Captor X using bluetooth instead of wifi hooks up in a couple of seconds faithfully every single time in the hundreds of daily uses I have put it through. It was a no brainer since they both sound great. Peace of mind, no connection issues, ever. Captor X wins.

    • @MasterControlKnob
      @MasterControlKnob 2 года назад +2

      Yes it's really weird that UA cannot get these issues solved. I have a lot of Wifi equipment and the OX is the only one that does not connect to my router. I'm using a dedicated IPad that connects to the OX ad-hoc network which does work. But this also means that I cannot use IPad for anything else unless I change its network settings. For a device that's so expensive you would hope that they can get a Wifi stack going....

      In the videos I immediately recognize the Ox which to my ears and taste sounds better than the Captor X. Have the Ox at home but same connection issues in Windows. It worked at startup for a short while and then lost connection forever. Have been troubleshooting for a week without success. Maybe it works better with an Ipad, but I am not an Apple guy. The Ox goes back to the shop.

    Just got the Captor X two days ago, I can't pretend to say I really know it yet but I am impressed with what I hear so far, My Revv Dynamis and Hovercraft amps have efeects loops but my Deluxe and Princeton amps don't, they are the ones that benefit most from the load box ATM.

Just got my captor x today and was trying it out tonight on a couple different amps, in the next few days I am going to plug it into my apollo x8p and try some plug-ins 1176 ect ... with the captor x. The possibilities are endless here with either unit so whatever you buy just have fun and enjoy they are both great, a buddy has the Ox so I am familiar with both as well as the apollo interfaces.

    I own a Captor X for almost 2 years now & been always chasing tones. I can agree with Kris on choosing DynIRs over IRs I've bought over the years. The DynIRs give you so many tonal options.! In this demo however I preferred the OX Box. It sounds more natural to my ears. More muddy, fuller tones that remind the days I used my mics to record. I am very happy with my CaptorX but using it for so long now I can notice the slight differences I guess. I sometimes find myself struggling when mixing solos specifically. The Captor can get harsh/thin at time. I also hate the choice of EQ on the Captor. OX's EQ is far superior!
    Overall, I can't say how much the CaptorX has helped me. I wouldn't play as much if I did not have it. But we always want that extra 2% don't we? ;)

    • @ChrisM541
      @ChrisM541 Год назад

      "always chasing tones" - the torment of every guitarist. In the 'old' days, if I remember, it was 'simpler' - choose an amp, pedals/fx and geetar. Today? choose an amp, pedals/fx and geetar, maybe add Kemper/AxeFx, and something from a small range of a billion software emulator/plugins. Lol.
      I still have Strat, Les Paul and a couple of acoustics, pedals together with Fuchs TDS amp but now I have so very much more in the PC - and sounding better and better - to totally fubar my head :)
      I also have Palmer loadbox and my GAS is telling me that Captor or Ox would be the bees knees.

    Bruh! Great video.
    I am not a tone snob but I do find that software latency is a bummer.
    I own the CX-16 and I LOVE the option of using several amps with headphones or attenuated (through several cabs) as I like.
    I find 2 problems:
    The first is that many players are accustomed to their cab in the room but not necessarily miced- this can be a psychological hangup. The twonote cabs are very good and I try to use MINIMUM eq (but I love the noise reduction!)
    The second problem:
    The attenuator really sucks. Neither level is usable AND the quality of the sound is poor (sounds processed…blech!)
    PLEASE TWO NOTES- design a firmware update for the attenuator.
    Happy new year!🇨🇦

    Got the captor X because of the choice of cabs and their DynIR stuff is awesome. The attenuation part is better to my ears too. Have to admit the embarked reverb is not that great. UA takes advantage of their stellar effects integrated into their unit... well this can be externalized anyway

    I was convinced the Ox would be a far fuller richer sound, so I was shocked that I guessed wrong on that first sample. The Captor X sounded much better to me in that test for some reason. The Ox is great, but not twice the price great, especially since it doesn’t let me load my own IRs. I am definitely going with the Captor X after hearing this.

    Funny. Just re-watched the 1st video yesterday. Now had this as recommended. About the blind fold test. Mmh. I think that you can get nearly identical tones / flavors. Meaning, there is no change in *quality* I perceive (on studio monitors). That one sounds thinner is just the setup / IR chosen. That thinner sound might not be prefered playing alone in your room, but sit much better in the mix. I guess, again, there is no real comparison. Both are pro tools. My favorite are Ownhammer Friedman / and Michael Nielsen the BHP Full Warm. But my life is full of happy distortion. Thx for doing this, Kris.

    i'm looking for a load box to use for making captures for my Quad Cortex. (trying to avoid having to mic every cab for every amp I make captures of). I like the OX Box because you able to use multiple Ohm impedances. The Capitor X is also very nice (and half the price) but you have to pick an impedance 8 or 16 ohm. I'm not sure which one I'd need most, and if I ended buying both an 8 and 16 ohm Capitor X then I'd be spending more than just buying the OX Box. I've heard the interface for the OX box can be unreliable, and the Captor X has a iphone app. I'm confused on which one I should buy. Any thoughts?

    I like the ox because it's chunkier/fuller sound, so maybe good for rhythm and I like the Captor X because it sounded more airy and clear, so better for lead or reverb/delay type effects. Together I think they could sound amazing and a real weapon for a home studio or even live situation.

  • @hcrockso1
    @hcrockso1 2 года назад +1

    In your comparison the OX really sounds better, and on the captor X recording there is also a "hiss" kind of sound, don't know if its maybe compression related or your camera mic interfered in the mix or something but that is the first thing I heard. Yeah, the Captor x sound a bit thinner and the OX sounds like it has more "meat", but that can also be only differences in the preset. I have the Captor X and I really love it, actually there is only a small number of DynIR cabs I like in it (like 4-5) and I only use them, and in some cases load OwnHammer IRs in it and those just sound amazing. I don't have the OX, I really don't need it beside the Captor X, as when you sit down and play around a little bit with it you can get some really amazing sounds out of it that actually surprised me how authentic they sound... anyway, good comparison and amazing video as always!

    I figured it right on the blind test - not to brag but a blind test is to test that we don't hear with our eyes right - because the cheaper Captor X had this 'metallic sheen' around the notes, maybe because of the onboard reverb? Also a little bit leaning towards tinny.

    IMO, the main thing here is that I think these products cater to two different types of players. The OX has value as a really high quality studio tool for professionals and the Captor is for players without pro gear budgets or playing live who wouldn't notice that extra 2% of the OX with the rest of the band ripping around them and that handy bluetooth connection is nice to tweak on the fly.

      Hi, my signal path is really basic: guitar - guitar cable - amp - from the speaker output a speaker cable - into Captor X - 2 xlr cables go into my Audient audio interface - computer. That’s it. And you’ll find my Captor X setting in the video. I hope you’ll find the reason for that hum. Cheers!

  • @keithbriscoe99

    seems like Captor X was set up a little "drier" and OX a little "wetter", so really curious if you had ANY reverb or eq on for the comparison playing. Ahhh, I see them now.

      Yes, I have some verb on both the OX and Captor X presets. Not a lot, just enough to make them feel nice to use. I’m basically stimulating some actual space with them to avoid the “sterile simulation vibe”.

    Kris, excellent review thank you. Have you compared Ox/Captor to Helix LT/Kemper etc ? specifically the quality of recorded sound.

    • @KrisBarocsi
      @KrisBarocsi  Год назад +1

      Thanks! Nope, I haven't. I'm pretty sure it's only a matter of preference, all sound awesome. The last thing I wanna do is getting rid of amps. I much prefer using a load box and cab simulation over amp simulation like the Helix, Kemper etc. I can get a pleasing tone with my amp + cab sim much faster than with full simulation. And then there's the feel and how pedals react to a real amp... To me those two are the most important factors.

    • @JimiSomeMoore
      @JimiSomeMoore Год назад

      @@KrisBarocsi thanks for getting back, maybe an idea for a video comparison ? Once you have a Preset/s (with Snapshots etc) you like on Helix, you are good to go, very quickly. Also incredibly flexible, fast to change/add sounds to suit the song. I am fortunate to have lots of ‘real’ amps collecting dust and have that ‘itch’ to see if I may prefer load box/simulation options or more likely it becomes another ‘tool in the box’ rather than an either or.

    I already have an Torpedo Cab M+ so the test is not relevant for me. HOWEVER the recommendation for the FreeRock2 DynIR was really great. I bought it (and Deluxe Reverb DynIR) and it's really good for Humbucker guitars without needing to adjust the equalizer. For single coils I prefer the Deluxe Reverb but that one needs big EQ adjustments and doesn't sound as well with Humbuckers.

    Thanks so much for the unbiased comparison. Your playing is very nice… Sonically, both of these units had attributes that were a cut above-no pun intended,😂. My impression of the Captor X was that it shined in the crunchy tones above the OX Box-but the Ox Box really shined above the Captor X in the cleaner tones, possibly due to the nuances of it’s preloaded effects. My studio headphones made the tone differences seem wider, allowing the Ox Box to have the all around edge in tonal quality. Without putting a solo track from each device to a mix it’s really close, but I would personally spend the extra cash and get the Ox Box, hence the term “buy once cry once.” ☮

    I just purchased the OX Box yesterday. There is no signal at the headphones, line-outs, or in the app. I do have signal on the speaker through. I have updated the firmware and software to 1.2, performed hard reset, swapped out cables, etc. all with the same results. I can set everything up in my Captor X and all works as expected. So frustrating. Anyone have any ideas? Waiting to hear back from UA.

    Having owned both a Captor and an Ox Box I can honestly say that the Ox for me was sooo much better in terms of tonality. The Captor felt digital, brittle and always felt like there was some form of weird filtering to me. The more modern X version of the Captor seems to be getting good reviews but having sold my previous versions I will be keeping my Ox. I just think that the cost of the Ox is ludicrous for what it is though, so budget is always one of the main obstacles. Absolutely love the plate reverb on it though, it’s to die for!

    Hi Kris,
    I don’t get it.
    I own a Captor X as well for a while. Since I never been able to get a decent sound with the DynIRs from TwoNotes, I learned how to create IRs from my own cabinets. My own IRs sound great.
    But I won’t believe that you can’t get a great sound coming from TwoNotes IRs. So I recreated your Settings. Using my Amps (Mesa, Marshall, Laney etc) it sounds muddy and harsh. Your recorded sound sounds fantastic. I know that it‘s hardly possible to say but: what am I doing wrong?

    • @KrisBarocsi
      @KrisBarocsi  2 года назад

      Hey Chris, I can’t possibly tell for sure why it sounds so different (bad) with your amps. Have you adjusted the mic positions in my preset when you tried it? I’m pretty sure I moved them around until I was happy. Other then that, I can only think of the amps sounding so different. My Revv and Mark III are both very full sounding, but tight american voiced amps. Not sure which Mesa you have, but it’s possible, that your British amps would need a different cab sim / EQ in the X.

    • @KrisBarocsi
      @KrisBarocsi  Год назад

      Audio interface: an outboard sound card for your computer. It has mic and line level inputs where you connect what you want to record. A mic, a keyboard, whatever.
      I use a cabinet simulation (the OX Box) after the amp head to keep the volume low. The OX has TRS jack outputs which I connect with the interface‘s inputs. Then I record the sound with a DAW (it’s called Studio One). I hope that makes sense to you. Cheers!
