From what I’ve seen so far, I would use the IRX with my Seymour Duncan Powerstage, into m 4x12, and nothing else. No need for any additional pedals. Okay, I might keep my Kemper…
I have a very similar setup but with the Friedman IR-X. Some pedals > IR-X > Mooer Tube Engine (always shocked how underrated this all-tube poweramp is) > 1x12 Cab w/V30.
Great setup! My home rig has the UAFX Ruby on my pedalboard going into the Fryette LXII power amp (mono 100 watt) going into the UA OX box with speaker cab or pedalboard with Ruby into H&K Stomp man (line out) into the 'hidden' UA OX box line input. All these setups sounds and work great. I'm planning next year to pickup the Lion for a true stereo rig with the LXII going straight into two 1x12 speaker cabs. Not because I really need it but because I can 🙂 Greetings from Holland!
The OX Stomp is very versatile in its routing. Add the Fryette PS and it’s a really useful home rig. I run my Ruby, Iridium and amps into my PS 2 , line out to OX Stomp and into DAW, I’ve also run very similar to this set up into cabs .
Interesting combination - I tried the same with the Strymon Iridium and the Orange Pedalbaby, one side with IR to recording, the other side with a "null IR" (no IR) into the orange and cab -> instant fender/vox/marshall in a tiny rig
Pete Thorn used a Two Notes Revolt direct into his PS-100 and the results were excellent as well. For high gain, one could use a Soldano SLO pedal as the preamp.
I recently got an OX Stomp and what I did was configured 2 presets identical doing the 1 mic panned hard and one DI panned hard the other way like you've done here but on one preset, I raised the output by 3dB so that I can use one switch to toggle delay on or off and the other switch is a decibel boost for solos.
I was just thinking that a more portable and affordable version of this would be to take something like the UA amp pedal and run it into the fx return of a small combo (6L6s in a hot rod deluxe, etc)!
I have 3 Powerstation 2 (Racked). 1 plug on a Ampete 88 S Studio + 8FX 1 plug on KHE ASX 8 + AFX 8 1 one stand alone The best attenuator in the market because of the reactive load when others attenuators are passive. No sound coloration at all, no dynamic loss, no compression, no frequency loss… I even use one for a little time to drive a Syn-2. And it was awesome (I have the Syn 5050 now). In the same type of rig which is exposed on the video. I just ordered a KSR PA 50 poweramp + a KSR CERES + a Zilla 2x12 slanted vertical Fatboy (V30+G12H75) and i’m pretty sure this rig will do great for metal tones
Great idea to get the bigger sound with less back surgery. Have been trying something similar with my woodrow into the ox stomp + power amp and cab. The Fryette is amazing and love that you mentioned making smaller amps louder. Set a mate of mine up with a small head based on a tweed champ into the Fryette then into a 2x12 for his band. Insane sound. Still waiting for the vaccum cleaners at the end,
Thanks so much for putting this together and making a video. I’ve had my Fryette PS2 a few years and I have a 50 watt Plexi, but my Lion 68 comes in two days, so I’ll be trying this. I don’t have the OX box, but have a CAB M+ or HXFX I can try. May pick up the OX.
Interesting setup. I have been using a Kemper with the PS--2 once. But after a while I found this setup too heavy (the PS has around or almost 9kg). So I started to experiment a little and found an even better power amp than the PS-2 is. I have used the return input of an old Amp1 from Bluguitar, the so called "silver edition" to amplify my Kemper. This 100 Watt power amp is dead quiet and sounds extremely organic. Maybe you try this combination and demonstrate it. Would be interesting. And a very compact and light setup.
Shit even those 2 uafx pedals combined with the new fender frfr cabinet would be pretty cool if you can't afford the rev cab and the powerstation ! But love the idea
Ahh so Henning really means.... having the ultimate Marshall rig without having a Marshall amp. And what he suggests is probably good. Except there's been better options around ever since the Fryette PS was released. These are ... any good analog Marshall in a box pedal >>> PS2 >>> Real Cab. There's many great Marshall in a box pedals. My fav is MI Audio Super Crunch Box V2. It's much better, cheaper and more versatile, than UAFX Lion. Plus, it's all analog so there's no a-d-a conversions :)
Great video thank you. Love the versatile modular idea… I have been slowly building a (very) poor man’s version using the stereo DSM Simplifier DLX. Planning to power the cabs with a Harley Benton Thunder 99, so I can run the whole thing in Stereo or Wet/Dry. …Unless someone has a better (but still budget friendly) suggestion for the stereo power amp???
I've been one the fence about the lion- I already have a Headrush MX5 and with the York IRs- it really sounds great. But- everyone keeps talking about how the Lion sounds so much better than any other sim- but when listening on line like this- you can't really tell. You can tell it sounds good, but you can't really tell how much better it sounds than say the Headrush- which also sounds great online. Once it's been processed through the internet and comes back out over my speakers- after reaching a certain quality it's like it's capped- it all sounds the same. Which just means the quality of the audio has reached the pinnacle of what my sound system can reproduce- anything past that, I can't really hear. I also worry about my cab- i's just like my sound system- it's only capable of a certain level of quality. What if it's simply not good enough to really let the Lion shine like it's supposed to? I guess I could always sell it- it would sell super quick right now I'm sure. And if it's as good as everyone says- I could sell my MX5.
For a more pocket friendly option albeit no tubes, you could use a Blackstar Amped 1 which is 100 watts and plenty loud enough. You could even bypass the OX for more savings and use the cab sims in the amped one to DI out
I run an Origin effects Overdrive into the Ox Stomp into an Amped1 with the channel in DI so there’s no cab sim from it. Sounds great. If I had a Freyette powerstation I’m sure it would be awesome as well

Man that seems like a very great but expensive setup... I'd be happy with just the UAFX Lion a power cab and my pedal board drives in front of the lion and my time based after the lion :)
I run a Ruby into my Powercab Plus. It needs a buffer between the Ruby and Powercab as the Ruby is an unbuffered output. Not a big deal though as lots of pedals , e.g Boss delays and reverbs , provide a buffer. It sounds great Naomi imagine the Lion would also.
Making equipment for electric guitars has got to be such a brutal business. It’s evolving so fast now. I feel like every week there’s a new system or way of making the tones we all love . Maybe they should make a company that makes a speaker cab with inter changeable faces and amps you can just insert . Are we just breaking down all the components and making them plug and play ? 😅
It’s so unfortunate that they do not implement midi. It’s such a standard and has been for decades why leave it out? That really spoils my plans for a massive DI rig with four guitar channels, including electric panels/organs
This video is what I was looking for, amazing! Just one question, can I do the same with a real amp? I would like to use a SV20h taking advantage of the effects in the OX stomp but through a real cab (not DI or interfaces). Is that setup possible?
Well what did I bought a Pyle PVTA80 Wireless BT Tube Amplifier Stereo Receiver• $200 And hooked my pedal board to it ,in stereo it sounds incredible believe it or not
Marshall silver jub mini, two notes captor x, your cab, your pedals. Bada bing. Bada boom. Or Henning's engineering wunder. Listen to the master who gives us possibilities. He is the best.
How does this power amp compare to the Seymour Duncan power stage 200? I want to build an amp setup that fits on a pedal board with tube preamp pedals, and the Seymour Duncan form factor is much smaller than this so I'm leaning towards that. No idea about sound quality though, thoughts?
I too have the Seymour 200 and am working towards that goal. The Fryette wouldn't fit on my pedalboard🧐. Not a pro player, looking to save my back at band practice. 'Very good' sounding is enough for me. 'Perfect'...too expensive.
Friedman IR-X does work in place of the UA pedals. Just disable IRs and you can send the Friedman into the Line In which frees up the Power Station's effects loop (giving you the option to either run time-based effects post Friedman, in its dedicated loop, or utilizing the Power Station's loop).
The Fryette PS is the best piece of gear I own as well. I can finally use my 73 Superlead because of the Fryette. I've also used the PS as a straight up power amp with a Tech21 PSA 2.0 preamp with great results.
@@EytschPi42 if I just watched this before purchasing my SV20H lol . I also own a Fryette (just to attenuate the SV20H) AND I have a 2x12 loaded with green backs !
I really want to get the OxStomp to expand my Dream 65, Ruby 63, see if it works well paired with my Two Notes Captor (not x) to get in the ballpark of a poor mans ox box for real amps, and/or even try it on the line out of my JC40 to see if i can get a good direct tone with that amp. I think ur combo of the Lion, Power Station, and OxStomp sounded great. Really surprised on how good it sounded through the actual cab and mic.
@orryfishburne5326 Sorry if I missed something from your comment, but isn't the Captor just a loadbox? So why would you need that with a pedal amp like the Dream 65 or any other "amp sim pedal"? These pedals are not real amps and don't have a "real" speaker output, therefore they don't need to "see" any load, like a real amp does. Also , as I mentioned, the Captor is just a loadbox and doesn't amplify the signal like the Fryette. Am I wrong about this? Maybe I misread something.
@@miketanarur yea the captor is a reactive loadbox with cab simulation. The captor is for my tube amps not the Dream or Ruby. I dont use the captor with my amps that much. Im just personally not a big fan of the stock ir's and the Two Notes software that comes with it. I could purchase more "cabs" in their software, but i honestly would like to try something different instead hence why im curious how well the OxStomp pairs with the Captor. I like the reactive load part, just havent found ir's that i like yet. I mainly use the Dream 65 now a days while my tube amp and captor collect dust, but i would like to use them more.
@@EytschPi42 Yeah true. DI has more midrange honkiness, speaker & mic is a bit more flat & a bit more sparkle to it! EVERY time I hear a comparison Henn, I still prefer the real thing! Blended WAS good however!
Has anyone tried the Lion, WITH cab sim engaged + power amp (e.g. Fryette PS) into a cab loaded with an FRFR speaker, such as Celestion F12-X200? In a live situation, FOH could take an output of the Lion with its cab sim and on stage you'd have nearly the same sound from the FRFR- loaded cab? @eytschpi42, any thoughts on this?
I have this exact amp and speaker, but have the Dream 65 instead of the lion. The Dream 65 sounds great this way. I just ordered some Synergy stuff and the OX Stomp to use with them as well. Hopefully it will sound great as well.
I've been experimenting with a similar rig with a UA Dream into a PS-100. One thing I noticed is that the output signal from the Dream is relatively weak, especially with cleanish tones. This means you can't really take full advantage of the full power of the power amp. I imagine the Lion is similar since I see here you seem to have the output on the pedal cranked to compensate for this. I have noticed that if you run the UA pedal into the Power Stations's FX return rather than the line in, you get vastly more volume and punch. Unfortunately, you also lose the ability to use the Power Station's effect loop in the way you're doing here.
Ok so if I had the Ox And the Lion, was going direct only and wanted to use the cabs in the Lion. I could run into the Ox, turn the mics to direct on all 6 rigs with different effects and just use the Ox as an effects box with 2 rigs switchable on the left and on/off on the right??
I’m sorry it doesn’t sound rock’n’roll. Player’s long hair and colour of the cabinet(definitely NOT flowerly green) is essential part of the sound. Hiding all digital effect inside of empty chassis of Marshall on top of NOT green cabinet would also greatly improve the tone.
Hi Henning, another great video - cool idea with the Fryette. What do you think of this setup with the Vox Valvenergy preamps? You have 4 amps and you can switch them using the link function on the pedals.
No, I don’t really publish my music. There is no point nowadays. I have tons of albums that are already released, but nothing I write now gets released.
@@EytschPi42 I belive you on that matter, but ís all the fuss worth it? :-) DSL have FX loop though, you can run it also on half power and have two master volume pots, that you can also switch using optional 6 button footswitch. All DSL's can be used on standby with power amp off, but line out have implemented CAB sim. Not the best one, but I never had issues with that.
Running the DSL into Cab M then to your speaker would work, you could then use the Cab M line outs to mixer etc. You’d only have reverb yes but the Cab sims in Two Notes can be dialed in very closely to the OX Stomp. The key here is that in the set up Henning uses the OX Stomp is running as a mono signal to the mixer. The biggest differences between the Two Nites and UA approach is that UA has the ability to pan the mics and room individually across the stereo field, Two Notes does not . The UA also has mics in its ‘room’ whereas Two Notes is more a space to create reverb. I’ve copied a few of my OX Stomp cabs into my Captor X and Cab M , copying a mono sound with no panning. Works very well and is as responsive through a mono speaker, in stereo though the Ox Stomp has a special magic.
@@duncancartledge1667 i use it with DSL20, but 40 is better. No issues with that. I don't use reverb that I can't take out :-) but on headphones it sounds good enough.
Henning, I have this kind of a setup with my KHE audio amp switcher but I cannot figure out why the effects loop on the power station does not work unless I have the unit on and in operation mode. Can you explain why this is and can I get around it?
@@EytschPi42 Darn, that make sense but I wish did because sometimes I do not want to use the power section of the Power Station and need the effects loop.
Does a modeling company have to pay royalties to the company whose product they modeled? Does UA pay Marshall a fee for duplicating the distinctive sound of their Plexi? Just curious.
@@gibgezr Thanks for the response. I understand the product name issue (the name is typically copyrighted); my question was more about the sound. One of the big issues brought up with the recent (now settled) actors/writers strike was maintaining ownership of your image/voice in an AI world. Wouldn't this also apply to guitar/amp modeling? It's an interesting topic.
This is honestly pretty fucking sweet, but, genuine question here (not trying to just be a fanboi of my modeler), but aren't setups like this becoming less and less relevant/practical when you have modelers simulating so many well known amps so well nowadays, and most importantly, **all in one unit/stompbox** ? Whether its Fractal, Helix, Neural, Kemper, Fender etc etc they all sound pretty damn good and most have a huge array of FX and IRs already built in. I feel like I'm missing something here, no? 🤔
the difference is the development that went into the Lion... it wasn't building a box that can do all of these things, but rather one that does this ONE thing extremely well... there is a big difference i the approach and the resulting product.
@@EytschPi42 I get that part of it, and you're right, this whole setup sounds phenomenal, I just don't see how it's a viable business model to simulate ONE amp really well when modelers are simultaneously not only simulating them almost just as well, but also include more than one amp model, are becoming more popular in the market, and are exponentially getting better with regular updates as time goes on while also including all the FX and IRs that pretty much any guitar player could ever need, simplifying it down to one product. To me it just feels like this setup missed "its time" and should have been THE thing back in the late 2000s/early 2010s when modeling wasnt really in the general players mind yet. I know tech at the time probably wouldn't allow that, but this just feels like an outdated, albeit great sounding, rig.
Okok but... 450 for ua cab, 450 for the ua lion, 1600 for the fryette. Dude... for 2500 you can buy a jcm studio, plexi studio or else and still have some cash in your pocket. Its a good equipement not a smart one.
Ok, now we need the same test with the Friedman IR-X

Marshall silver jub mini, two notes captor x, your cab, your pedals. Bada bing. Bada boom. Or Henning's engineering wunder. Listen to the master who gives us possibilities. He is the best.
Great video and usefull tips! I'd like to see Friedman IR-X with Fryette Power Station PS-2A and a cab! What do you think about it?
would sound great
How does this power amp compare to the Seymour Duncan power stage 200? I want to build an amp setup that fits on a pedal board with tube preamp pedals, and the Seymour Duncan form factor is much smaller than this so I'm leaning towards that. No idea about sound quality though, thoughts?
no tubes.... so you can try it, but I am not sure it's the same thing.
I too have the Seymour 200 and am working towards that goal. The Fryette wouldn't fit on my pedalboard🧐. Not a pro player, looking to save my back at band practice.
'Very good' sounding is enough for me. 'Perfect'...too expensive.
@@rickthomas393 nice, which tube preamp pedals do you have/plan to get?
First, that cab is fire.
Second, the Fryette PS is the best piece of gear I own.
Third, would that Friedman IR-X work in place of the UA pedals?
Friedman IR-X does work in place of the UA pedals. Just disable IRs and you can send the Friedman into the Line In which frees up the Power Station's effects loop (giving you the option to either run time-based effects post Friedman, in its dedicated loop, or utilizing the Power Station's loop).
I just got a PS-2. Can hardly wait to use it. I hear this a lot!
The Fryette PS is the best piece of gear I own as well. I can finally use my 73 Superlead because of the Fryette. I've also used the PS as a straight up power amp with a Tech21 PSA 2.0 preamp with great results.
Why not just get a Victory V4? It has DI, TwoNotes cabsim and ordinary cab out. All baked into one small enclosure. For less money.
This is basically what I do live except I use a Seymour Duncan power stage
I tried that and it doesn’t come close to the sounds I got with the Fryette.
@@EytschPi42
if I just watched this before purchasing my SV20H lol . I also own a Fryette (just to attenuate the SV20H) AND I have a 2x12 loaded with green backs !
Awesome 😎. Now I'm wondering if a micro terror into that would be a rockerverb for 900$ 😮
I don’t think it would
@@EytschPi42 a boy can dream 😂
Interesting. I wonder how a Synergy SYN-1 dock would work into the Fryette....
The PS-2 served as the test platform for the Syn-1 and Syn-2 during the design process.
@@FryetteAmps Very cool.
NICE rig set up! Mic still sounds BETTER than DI/IR!
different, not better
@eytschpi42, any thoughts on this?
I have this exact amp and speaker, but have the Dream 65 instead of the lion. The Dream 65 sounds great this way. I just ordered some Synergy stuff and the OX Stomp to use with them as well. Hopefully it will sound great as well.
So, why not the HB Thunder 99? More compact and safe for the VHT lol. Oh well, by this logic, we could talk for months about building a rig.
With the Ox stomp you can, but not with the Ox Box because it has not line in.
Yeah I have the stomp. Awesome. Thank you sir.
Is the powerstation 50 watts ,as a poweramp, overkill for a small flat with neighbours? Beautiful setup!
you can run it at any level
I’m sorry it doesn’t sound rock’n’roll. Player’s long hair and colour of the cabinet(definitely NOT flowerly green) is essential part of the sound. Hiding all digital effect inside of empty chassis of Marshall on top of NOT green cabinet would also greatly improve the tone.
Hi Henning, another great video - cool idea with the Fryette. What do you think of this setup with the Vox Valvenergy preamps? You have 4 amps and you can switch them using the link function on the pedals.
The amazing thing about what I showed here are the base sounds from the Lion…. I don’t think many other pedals can rival that.
@@EytschPi42 Yes of course! 😎 But for anyone who needs a little more sounds, the setup is definitely a cool idea.
One more question: I plan to use the OX STOMP, Lion and Astra as a direct rig. Have you used the 3 together? If so, do you notice any latency??
I think you'll be fine!
Other than price, I don't understand why UA wouldn't incorporate MIDI into their pedals. They excluded a huge customer base by doing so...
indeed
How loud should it be to record a good sound with a mic?
Doesn't the Victory V4 Amp makes more sens ? Cheaper, more lightweight and probably as good tonewise ?
Not a tube power amp… probably a good product, but this here is very flexible and can be used in many combinations.. and there are FX
What is that awesome song that is playing at the end of the video?
One of mine
@@EytschPi42 is it available to purchase?
No, I don’t really publish my music. There is no point nowadays. I have tons of albums that are already released, but nothing I write now gets released.
@@EytschPi42 if you ever do I’ll be the first to purchase that. I loved that small sample. Thanks!
Can the UA lion be used as a simple guitar pedal and plugged into a fender amplifier?
I guess you could, but that wouldn't be how I primarily use it
Get DSL40C and Two Notes CAB M. Easier ans cheaper. And not bad on any way.
it's not on this level and you can't attenuate and have no FX
@@EytschPi42 I belive you on that matter, but ís all the fuss worth it? :-) DSL have FX loop though, you can run it also on half power and have two master volume pots, that you can also switch using optional 6 button footswitch. All DSL's can be used on standby with power amp off, but line out have implemented CAB sim. Not the best one, but I never had issues with that.
@@damasterkareju serious?
Can you explain why this is and can I get around it?
the FX loop goes to the cab... if you don't have it on, it won't amplify to the cab and not use the FX loop.
@@EytschPi42 Darn, that make sense but I wish did because sometimes I do not want to use the power section of the Power Station and need the effects loop.
How does the Lion take an external boost?
Great
Does a modeling company have to pay royalties to the company whose product they modeled? Does UA pay Marshall a fee for duplicating the distinctive sound of their Plexi? Just curious.
No. They would have to pay to use the name, but that's why it's called a "Lion" and not "1987 Marshall Super Lead" etc.
My god, I can not conecct the lion 68 vía Bluetooth with my mobile
Restart your phone 🤜💥🤛
ToneX with power station!!??
Works brilliantly, just turn the cabs off in the Tonex global settings .
No MIDI is the only let-down.Thanks, Henning.
Looks pretty slick. It’s a shame you have to keep qualifying how cool it is. It’s awesome… except… covers all… except… FX!… except Has presets… except
Couldn’t you just buy a Marshall amp and be done with it?
Not the same
Where is the Dampf?
No tube, no Dampf.
there are tubes... 6L6... and the DAMPF is in the room... can't convey that in a video... it was definitely there.
Pls Henning give me your Power Station? Xoxo
Nope
@@EytschPi42 I tried
Its a good equipement not a smart one.
most cleaner sounds sucked
