    According to german laws everyone has to mark their videos as advertisements as soon as there's a single "subject relevant" product, tag or link in it. Even if you didn't get paid for making that video. Sounds confusing and it really doesn't help the viewer to see which is a paid review and which isn't. But it's the law so whatever...

    Still remember when I bought my first guitar, a classical, at the age of 14. The neck was definitively not straight, by any account, but not knowing better, I was happy to have it and assumed having an action so high was normal. Later on I tried to have it fixed but luthiers in the area told me it would be too expensive. Still have it, currently on loan for a friend to start learning. Everytime I buy a guitar nowadays, mostly e-basses, the first thing I check is the neck!

    The effects loop is def useful for getting big sound at low volume.
    Inserting a good amp emulation, like the Catalinbread Rah or SFT, the Walrus 385,( personal fav),CTS Falcon, or prob the new Walrus multi amp emulator( haven't tried yet).Compressors can help simulate higher volume feel and conditions, as well.
    Good point about just using the main amp with an attenuator instead of buying a designated " practice " model.For players that have been at it for a while, having 5 or more diff kinds of amps isn't unusual( and it is notable how much an amp can determine and shape the sound and your playing,- often overlooked.), but if you're just starting out, it's better to concentrate on one good, all purpose, set up.You find that the varied amps are going to respond differently to the rest of the rig, and you spend more time tweaking and setting up than playing.
    Peace.

    I completely agree that Fryette Power Station is just awesome for bedroom level volume. After trying VSTs, solid state amps, the likes of Yamaha THR and even Kemper in the end nothing beats a tube amp with a real cab for me. At low 'master' volume it wasn't sounding amazing though. However, with Fryette Power Station it just shines. It's awesome.

      The Power Stations and ToneKing Ironman II attenuator are at the top of the food chain for attenuation. The Power Station can be off putting to some due to the re-amp design. If you want a more purist option the Ironman II is the one. I say try both if you can and keep the one you feel the most love for with your own rig and in your own room/studio setting. 👍

    Hey Kris. Thanks for the video. Actually it helped me learn about attenuation. I have a fender hot rod deluxe and at some point 2 years ago I did a passive attenuator (without knowing this name) by just adding a 100k pot in the pedal loop. It works fine but not sure it kills the tone (actually it doesn't kill it but you end up losing some after all). Since I'm not willing to spend much, thinking on improving this, adding 2 pots 100k in series, and putting treble bleed on them.
    Any thoughts? Willing to try?
    Tks and keep up man.

    The cost of the PS-2 is tough to swallow. However, it’s so much more than just an attenuator. It is a tone shaper, a re-amper, and a recording interface. But, more importantly for me, it also creates an effects loop for amps without one. It’s made all of my amps from 5W to 55W more usable. I definitely feel like I am getting my moneys worth.

    Kris... As per... I went out and got the new Dunlop Volume X8 pedal today. Genuinely inspired by the way you applied a Volume pedal. Having watched other significant Artists use it before on RUclips, you demonstrated to me yesterday, some truly subtle and sublime color wash to the palate of color you were using. Going to work on it! Here's the thing... I'm not sure why, but you have nailed the relevance of the content of your Videos. Too many, well intended others, simply add way too much superfluous and unnecessary chatter. Quite tedious. Just keep doing you lad. I'm in. FYI? MESA? MAY not ME ;-) p.s. I got the Strat back cover style of rechargable battery, to avoid tricky routings. I'll have to cover and redrill the screw holes because they don't align, and will probably have to enlarge the holes to get the cables trough... But that seemed more doable with my current skills and tools than routing 🤓

    Nice video and nice RHCP shirt! Regarding attenuators, I was wondering lately to get an attenuator but there are a lot to choose from, passive, reactive with IR loader or without etc... The captor X seems like a good choice for the price as it has an attenuator option, and all this fancy IR stuff and app and all, however I am afraid that the -20db and the -40db attenuation levels are way too much if I want to jam in my cellar but still get a decent volume with the air push feel from the speakers but the power tubes cranked... But I don't know as I haven't tested it yet... I think the Rivera RockCrusher might be a good one as its passive and should not affect the sound and has more attenuation levels, and also a direct out that I can hook up into my interface and just get an IR loader plugin in the DAW or get some speaker or room simulations from Amplitube and that would be almost the same features as the Captor X has in its app... Of course the best solution would be an OX but it costs twice as much as both of the above mentioned... What do you think? Is the Captor X too silent with attenuation and do you think the Rivera would be a good choice? Thanks for any feedback in advance...

    • @KrisBarocsi
      @KrisBarocsi  3 года назад +1

      I wouldn't go with the OX for attenuation. It's incredible for cab sims and all but the attenuator swallows the high-end. The Captox X on the other hand is killer for attenuation. The -40 is really really quiet, you're right. The -20 could work though. If I crank my heads with that setting on the Captor X I'm definitely beyond bedroom volume. Not sure if that's enough loud for you, I think you should try it if you can. The Rivera is also really good and gives you more attenuation levels. I never A/B tested the X and the Rock Crusher, so I can't tell which one I prefer. Both are very good for sure. Cheers!

      Try comparing some for yourself. They can all feel and sound quite different. Also try the ToneKing Ironman II or mini and Power Stations for comparison at least, then you’ll really know what you want and whether the more expensive ones are worth it to you. The UA OxBox is a great digital/recording interface but the power attenuator is quite inferior at retaining the real character of your amp when compared to the dedicated attenuators from the likes of ToneKing.

  • @fraenkiboii
    @fraenkiboii 3 года назад

    Hey Kris! Can the Captor X be used as a full attenuator without a cabinet connected to it? As soon as Marshall SV20 are available again, I’d like to buy one and use only the head with the Captor X. Is that possible without damaging the amp? Cheers Frank

    • @KrisBarocsi
      @KrisBarocsi  3 года назад

      Hey, absolutely yes! That’s how I always use it in my videos. If you don’t connect a guitar cab the Captor X automatically changes to full amp power load. The amp will definitely not get damaged. Cheers

    Hello Kris, I waited until you upload the final video with the improvements in your HB, but I would like to ask you the following: the marks that the strings leave on the frets (especially the 5 and 6 string) like a string-print, do they affect the sound? We have to file them when we are going to change strings? Thanks.

    • @KrisBarocsi
      @KrisBarocsi  3 года назад

      Hey, do you mean the carvings on the frets? If yes, that's normal and it's called fret wear. You don't have to worry about it as long as the strings ring out properly and they don't start to buzz and fret out. It can take many years until you have to go to a guitar tech for a fret leveling. And even more years until they have to refret the guitar for you. You can polish the frets when you change strings (with a fret rubber or with 0000 steel wool) which makes the frets really smooth. But don't worry about the fret wear too much. cheers!

    • @KrisBarocsi
      @KrisBarocsi  3 года назад +1

    No one ever buys the right guitar. Especially now with social media.

    yep , don't become a guitarnerd , it will cost you a lot off money , spend on way to expensive gear wich is not much better then the regular gear wich for most coverband / pub gigs players is good enough , so you don't need an expensive fender or gibson , in these day's the top range epiphone's and squire's ,and prs se's are very well build guitars , and this advice from someone who has probably spend about 30 - 50.000 euro's on indeed way to much expensive gear the last 20-30 years or so but has now finally learned this lesson . For instance : my squire "parts "stratocaster i have now ( wich in total cost me 350 euro ) sounds and plays just as well as the fender custom shop stratocaster i have had before ( wich cost me 3500 euro ) ect. ect. ect . , the fender for sure wasn't then 10 times better , i have become a better guitarplayer over the year's though and started to realize in the end , it's not the gear , it's talent , practice , passion ect . My guitarnerd eyes where opened when i saw vids on yt off jack pearson on his squirer strat and crate amp some years back , absolute killer playing and sound ! And for the critics ect . , well if you have the money and want the real "deal " , go ahead , but just realize , it's just a tool , you're holding !

      agree antoon.
      many of the cheaper guitars profit from modifications though.
      often those cheaper guitars have not so good sounding pickups. and if you don't like your guitar's tone you won't play very good. i hope that doesn't sound weird to you.
      it's also very helpful if the guitar is nice to play and you like how it looks.
      but.......you can have a non pricey guitar which is as nice as a custom shop one. this is
      where i want to agree with you fully.
      a guitar is nothing without a good sounding amp. lol. next thing to philosophize about.

      @@BigEdWo yes , a good set off pick ups is the best way to upgrade an bugdet guitar , my squier "parts" stratocaster is made from a squire bullet strat body and a squire classic vibe strat neck , it has fender tex mex pickups ( with also better pots ect. ) and it play;s and sounds great and also looks nice ( artic white body and maple neck ) . Amps and pedals are even more important to create the sound you are looking for and again you often do not have to buy the most expensive pedals and amp to get a good sounding rig .

    4X12’s don’t work well at bedroom amp levels? I’m not so sure about that. My EVH 5150iii 50 watt head is sitting on top of my EVH 4x12 in my bedroom as we speak and it sounds great! But, I am an inconsiderate neighbor after all. 😂 I guess everybody has a different definition on what “bedroom level” is. Now excuse me while I wipe the blood from out of my ears. 😂
