Congratulations on your new home and studio. One thing that hasn’t been mentioned is that it is something special to have a wife that is not only your soulmate but someone who is supportive every step of the way. My wife and I have been married for 45 years and has been with me ever step of the way wether dealing with business deals, health issues, death in both our families and whatever else there will be to face. I’ve been playing guitar for about 20 years and have really enjoyed and learned a lot from your videos. Keep up the great work!

@greg schoenherr you and I are lucky. I’m also married to my best friend and soulmate, and she’s been behind me and my music 100% since day one. And I support her photography and all of her endeavors all the way as well. I realize that guys sometimes make mistakes and marry a woman they thought they knew, but I’ll never understand those guys who marry for any reason other than real compatibility. Money, power, social status, marrying the boss’ daughter, a trophy wife or because they “think it’s time they settled down” - those are the wrong reasons that end up in misery. Anyway, just had to comment. All the best.

  • @Retrograde6
    @Retrograde6 Год назад

This is a great vid, different than what I was expecting. I have to drop a comment because you brought up Bob Vila and This Old House a couple times. I went to Berklee. I rented and eventually bought what had originally been Bob Vila's very first building he'd built to house the production of This Old House - and converted it into a music studio. Not a recording studio, but a space in which I taught guitar for years, practiced, had rehearsal, etc. Downstairs was a 32' x 28' open bay with one (big) garage door, more outlets than you could possibly want, with a 10' ceiling. This is where they built cabinets, etc. It was raw drywall, concrete and filled with sawdust floor when I first moved in. Took 3 days just to get the sawdust out. I painted it a great cool creative color (s), built a wall & door where the bay door was, put carpet on the wall to kill sound, etc. I can relate to all the work you've put in.
So in it's weird but very appropriate way vis a vis this vid of yours →Bob Vila's original This Old House became an actual music studio.
I left there a long time ago, but starting the process again - which is why I watched the vid. And somehow it all comes full circle. Congrats on the basement studio! (I've watched some of that)

One idea for your loft...Leslie rotating speaker cabinet. And experiment with wet/dry/wet, both wet amps in stereo. Maybe all three up there firing down at you. Maybe just the dry channel. Maybe one wet to get the left (or right) some serious room separation to help with wide imaging and huge sense of space. Killer room, enjoy experimenting!

The coolest thing about the loft is that it lets in tons of natural light and the ceiling that vaults upward to it gets rid of two 90 degree angles. I don't think I'd want to climb up and down the ladder all the time, so I'd go with those who suggested room/air mikes and cameras aimed downward. Then I'd put something you find inspirational to look at, whether it be artisan glass, plants, wind sculpture or a couple of vintage instruments. Regarding the ceiling fan, I'd keep it as it will make the space more comfortable but I'd add a remote switch to the recording desk so you can switch it off before you press "record" and back on when you hit "stop."

Here's my tip on the acoustic panels you mounted to the walls. If you space them out from the walls up to the thickness of the panels, it will extend their effectiveness into lower frequencies. They won't absorb proper low frequencies as they're just not deep enough. But they'll work at lower frequencies than they currently do by spacing them out from the wall. If you space them further than the thickness of the panel, it becomes less effective again so there's a limit to how much gain you'll get from this.
    Good luck.

You should get a "top down bottom up" blackout cellular shade for that window. That way you can blackout the light or open it from lifting the shade up or letting it down from the top. You can really fine tune your amount of light. I installed shades for 10 years and those are the most versatile.

I often wonder why "living with parent´s" is considered such a "shame" (with more intensity in some societies, like USA). What if it is a big ass house/mansion? Many people in my country also live in the same building (sold the house and got several apartments). Many people will regret not seeing their folks enough when they get to adult age.

Thanks for the breakdown and I'm all kinds of jealous / envious of your setup. While I have a well functioning, modest home studio my cat has destroyed two sets of headphones. He doesn't like anyone to sing and he'll slip in during the middle of a session and start chewing though the headphone cords without anyone knowing it until suddenly you can't hear yourself! I can repair the cords but they are never the same. An easy fix is to shut the door to keep him out but in my house the ventilation isn't so good so it gets really hot if I do that. So now I have set up all my gear to face the door so I can see him when tries to slip in. Even so, he found a way to voice bomb one of my sessions. I was tracking some layered harmonies and got everything down but on later playback I could hear a faint but very audible "meow" in the background! Evidently my cat wants to be part of the creative process and if he can't be, then he wants to shut it down. Never thought I would be trolled by my own cat.

That upper level inspires me !
With all the scientific instrumentation and technology it is overloading the vibrations with yang !
    Simply add ying...
    how?
    life affirm...
with a wild bird service Station...perhaps 3 droll Yankee feeders....a purpose designed Niger seed feeder ....sometimes called a finch flocker..
a sunflower seeds feeder ,a peanut feeder and a generall purpose grain feeder.
A clever trick would be a hanging bird bath ( ideally drip fed or strongly flushed rainwater in spout so it's self filling )
I have worked out if the overspill of the seeds lands in a small pond underneath it doesn't bring in too many rodents or scruffy street wise pigeons and sparrows.
Those water soaked grains are relished by various fish species!...so all very tidy and cyclical...ying up!
I only sat droll Yankee feeders because they look great last years and are considered squirrel proof.
The magic of seeing such colour and life will doubtless inject life into the music coming through all who practice record and song write therein...
if you have the inclination how's about a funky spiral staircase to access your mezzanine which you can deck out with luxurious lounging about pillows ,futons beautiful rugs and tapestries hanging on the little walls .
and of course some top quality speakers and some remote way to press play on your latest recorded masterpiece.
An ideal space to breathe life , actual life into your lovely new space.
Taking the time out to really enjoy what you've just created...or maybe spot the flaws in it?!
I don't think developing affinity with nature HAS to have negative hippy or oriental wisdom vibes...
    but maybe ?!
having a mini bar in a fridge and a small dumb waiter lift to bring up drinks and tasty snacks or brightly coloured fruits could all help you listen well to what you've been making....
That's what I'd love to see up there ...AND ....a great spot for a sexy siesta with your romantic partner ..!
Depending on your region the most magical visitors to a specialised feeder is of course the humming birds.
I want to send one to the guy who runs the OLivson hotel which is a genuine oasis in the heart of the hectic city of Porto prinz on the Caribbean island of Haiti...right in the centre of the capital they have at least 3 species of these amazing nectar feeding angels...including the world's smallest avian of all ...the Bee Humingbird ..
I honestly thought I was looking at half a dozen bumblebees until my Yankee ornithological friend enlightened me.
Any way best of luck with your venture...you can't beat the only four things we people guaranteed to improve not hinder the world .. Be.Artistic& create, gather & hunt and give your wilder birds the good news!!
    I can't count can I ?
    love and peace

Why regular people asume that living with someone else (your folks for example) is such a burden/shame/failure? That´s bs. You know how the Rockefeller´s or any other hyper wealthy family back each other?

Luxaflex is a reflector/diffuser. So hang some luxaflex in front of the windows and that way you can enhance the tunability of the room. Curtains in front of the loft will work too.

I'm sorry Rhett I just hear the echoey house acoustic in that vault space and then see the speakers on top the desk riser and omg a SUB under the desk and i think about standing waves at 40Hz or whatever the resonant /f/ will be in that room
The first thing I would have done is forget about the desk, just set the speakers up with some very familiar music and listen to what it sounds like in the room and find the best place to sit in the room where the bass from that SUB sounds the best, than mark that spot "X" and its where your listening position is (so where the desk goes is oriented to that point).
Or I'd just take the sub away and start with near fields only
putting a sub in that space without listening to what it will sound like with the desk against a wall is a recipe for bass frequency disasters for anything you mix in that space.
panels on walls only affect the mids and highs. low frequencies are room and position dependent
turn the sub OFF for a month I am begging you please

In the closet, lighting overhead, and on the left side as many shelves as you can get in there for the pedals. Or, cover a piece of the wall in 3M Dual lock and just have pedals in an ever-changing artistic collage.

Personally, I would say bust out those walls then put a smaller iso booth on the other side of the room in the corner (on the same wall as the bar and closet). That way you can have the control room look straight into the live room.

If you put the control room in the wood shop, you'll have to look thru the iso booth to see into the live room. If it were me I'd want the live room, iso room and control room all to be able to see each other directly.
Nice job on the acoustic treatment upstairs, but definitely would go with a cloud absorber for the ceiling, it will make mixing and tracking in there a lot more fun!

One thing that's really cool with you is that you basically started your studio journey at the "grass roots" level, working out of a basement. You learned so much from that experience, and have been able to translate that into your new space which is very much a "professional" environment. All the while educating yourself AND us too! Really nice work Rhett. Thanks for providing a clear, accessible view into your "world". Your video work is some of the most enjoyable stuff i view on RUclips. Oh, and your basement recording studio project sounds REALLY exciting. It's a nice space and i think it'll work out well. I'll tell you, your basement looks like it was MADE for being a studio. (I vote for the iso room btw.)

The 4710D actually has 8 channels of conversion. You could run the Helix and the Axe FX outputs at line level and go into the channel 5-8 converters on the 4710D, then you could plug your Kemper into the X4, leaving you two hot patch inputs on the X4. Just a thought. Have fun with it!
