I don't disagree that the choices here are good bang for the buck but for cheapest, I'd honestly just grab a Katana Artist combo and call it a day. I've gigged with the first generation combo and there's really nothing it can't do and it has great effects built in.
Yea, also used some time my Katana 50 and kills it honestly, would prefer the newer Katana 100/212, but my way to go for small gig rig is the SC20h plus JVMC212 cab, but thats way more expensive haha.

Cabs are in fact quite important, that's why whenever I find an old Crate Blue Voodoo cab I snatch it up, super great, and super affordable on the used market. Pretty sure it came with v30s or Eminence Modeling 12s. It was good enough for Marty Friedman on Rust in Peace, so it's good enough for me. The heads are great too.

Great sounding cabs, one of the worst sounding heads ever. People still swear they were great but I have never been able to get anything good out of them.
Crate got a bad name but people don't realize in the 90s they were made in Missouri. The cabs had eminence speakers made in Kentucky and they sound great. I still have my blue voodoo 120 with its respective 4X12 and it sounds killer. Back in early 2000s my friends would play on my amp and tell me how badass it sounded, then they proceeded to buy one but the new ones were made in China. Not the same amps boys.
That Epiphone Les Paul costs more than the entire rig I gigged with for 5+ years. Squier Classic Vibe Telecaster ($299 at the time), Vox Pathfinder 15R ($149), Digitech Bad Monkey ($49) and a Mooer Shimverb ($45). Played small clubs and bars with that setup for years.
I’ve used a ‘91 Peavey Classic-50 4x10 since 2005. It weighs 4,000 lbs & it’s time to retire-it to the studio … great-amp though. The smaller heads & cabs today are a godsend, but the choices are overwhelming. This was a huge help, gents. Thank you & happy new year! P.S. Exactly … Boss Pedals worked for Prince & Steve Vai. Having done lots of gigs in cruddy bars, this setup is way WAY better than what most bands go with, it's absolutely amazing!! this has the potential for not only gigs but also practicing and home recording
Mini amps today sure are incredible for the price. What we would have done to have little beasts like those 10-15 years ago (that weren't just the Tiny Terror or HT-5)
Get a Dean bass for around 200 the TC electronic tuner and a Behringer V-Tone Bass BDI21 preamp to plug in the microphone cable. Cheapest rig for a gig.

Yes the cab is so much more important than most people think. I parted my current rig together over time and saved changing the cab for last and honestly wish I would have changed it first.
I agree on the Epiphone...I played an Epi SG in store and it was too good and too cheap not to take home. Don't know what they changed...but it's good! I own lots of high end guitars and still love this thing.
8 years ago I paid less than 200 bucks for my gig rig. Bought a used red stripe bandit for 65 bucks and an American peavey predator for 115 and someone nodded it and put fender staggered locking tuners on it. So yeah this isn’t nearly the cheapest you can get away with lol
I still do the rock/metal/punk gig with 100w heads because they are barely breathing at stage volume...and there is less noise and feedback overall. I have a loud drummer that makes 100w solid state amps inaudible, and small wattage tube amps push so hard they become unusable and thin. It all depends on your gigging situation for sure. When I play with my church gigs is where low wattage is king.
I'm in a country rock band and my rigs range from a vintage Marshall jcm800 2203, orange rockerverb 50 to a Magnatone Super 15 with Gibson guitars. (61 jr and new Les Paul Traditional. That lil evh lunch box is calling my name. Dammit that was great. I'm not your normal country player. That's why guitars have knobbies. Great video. I stopped giggin with 4x12s years ago and honestly I never get my Super 15 above 2 at gigs and thats with a 1x12 Magnatone cab. I've gigged with my Marshall class 5 with no mic even.
Iv'e got the LP studio with the coil splitting and it's a great guitar! I have 3 different Epi's , an SG , LP and the 58' Korina Explorer. All are great and the QC was excellent!

That said, I would go with an Invective MH over the 5150 LBX, as it's only a little more expensive and comes with the noise gate and boost built in. Not to mention it has a much better clean. Also, as someone whose boost pedal of choice is an MWK Crissaegrim, of which only 11 have been made to my knowledge, I feel attacked by some of your comments lol
I'd actually argue that the 6505 MH is a better choice because it's both cheaper and it still cuts out a pedal from the rig since it comes with reverb. The Invective cuts out the gate, but I think the savings are offset by the cost increase. The clean channel on the 6505 isn't nearly as good as the Invective, but it's still fine on the highest wattage setting and it becomes actually good if you put the jj low gain tubes in it (which I highly recommend doing since the gain maxes out around 4 or 5 with the stock tubes).
it's funny for me to watch gearheads try and pick out "cheap" equipment. Admittedly the total being under 2k for a whole rig isn't bad. But I've played gigs with a combo amp and 0 pedals. Not really going to impress anybody with your gear but it works. I also would say, in the kind of setting they are describing, that a cab is not the end of your sound at all. Especially since they're talking about smaller cabs being miked and all, now you're being affected by mic placement, the mic itself, whatever the sound guy is doing on the board (if it isn't your own guy), and the whole mains and the room and all that. But the cab would be the last bit you have direct control over probably. I've also played plenty of gigs where we were outdoors with very little sound system to speak of, or just plain not enough channels on the board for our setup, so we've had to decide between things like having enough vocal or drum mics or just cranking the amps or whatever.
My main gigging amp for well over 5 years was a Fender Mustang III modelling combo. Admittedly it looked dumb next to all the half stacks people would inevitably show up with but it sounded great and got the job done.
Just a FYI for anyone out there, not criticism of the video. The TC electronic polytune 3 has a buffer and true bypass mode, the PT3 has a strobe mode that is +/- .02 cents accuracy. Also has an always on display option. Plus ton of other options. I own two polytune 3. Full size and mini, I use them for gigs, and setting up guitars. The polytune in my opinion is one of the best tuners on the market. Only other that I say may be better would be a sonic stomp reasearch strobe tuner.
Great video fun to watch but... I'm thinking (only because mine is) ... you could find a gigable Rig at 1/2 the price. When you mic the amp ya just don't need much anymore. (a 15 watt combo amp will do the job) just saying ..This is my opinion anyway
Total cost listed on screen 1900 dollars. I use an FM3, which was around 1200 new from Fractals website with tax. A nice powered speaker like a CP12 can be had for 650 ish dollars with tax, or you could go cheap with a Headrush if you think they're good enough. that's 1850, so very similar price and the versatility of the FM3 is incredible and includes gates and reverbs and many other effect options.
I have the LBX III-S and I like having the green channel as a pedal platform for clean and classic rock while using the red channel for the heavy and thrash stuff.
The difference between a100 watt amp vs.a 50 watt amp at full volume is only 3dbs. You'd would've been thinking a lot more but it's not. So yes, you can use a 50 watter with no problem. Great video for the kids and beginners. Thanks Ben and Fluff.🎸🎸🎸🎸👍
For 100 more you could also get the 6505 mh, 5 extra tube watts with a good clean and built in reverb. With that reverb ben could get the sauce he craves as well saving a bit of money in terms of pedals, and damn near identical gain tones. Edit: forgot about this, but it also the tube life indicator that tells you if the power tubes are still good or if they need replaced

Guys, you see how there are 4 plugs on the ns-2? Have you ever used them? If you actually hook it up right its as good as the sentury. Im a high gain metal guy and it is amazingly tight.
Nice vid! You definitely dont need a big rig to gig (haha), I prefer the Marshall DSL20hr with a 2x12 Cab, like a MX212 as for an affordable setup (I personally use the SC20h plus JVMC212 cab with different speakers to mic them and mix them). But great rig there with the 5150! Love it!
Decibels add in a log scale, which makes a 2x12 cabinet only 10% louder than a 1x12, and a 4x12 less than 20% louder than a 2x12. BUT to keep the same volume levels on each speaker you will need to increase output on the amp a lot to drive a 4x12 to be 20% louder than a 2x12, and a 2x12 to a 1x12. Basically you need 2x the amp output to increase 10% on dbs. If its volume you are looking for, go for a 1x12 high output.
Would have gone with a boss katana as they offer so much and sound really good when dialed in, or something like the headrush mx5 for the versatility. Guiter I would have gone with something like a schecter or Jackson and with a little fret work that dead simple... Bam budget rig
Nice video. The next episode should be the lightest rig for a gig. With all the cabinet sims, power pedals or small heads, and lighter cabinets you can easily cut the weight way down without impacting volume and sound.
It depends on the genre, but the dv mark stuff it's so light that once I almost lost my balance because i put a lot of force into lifting the amp (since it looked like it had a normal weight) it was a great surprise

One thing that may be an interesting contender for the pedals is the TC plethora X5, it's ~$400 but much more bang for the buck. It includes a good chunk of all toneprint pedals
With a D I you can use a 5 watt amp. But I unfortunately got my stuff when I was younger and now I'm "stuck" with a couple heavy 60/100 watt combos. My Boogie in a road case weights damn near 100 lbs and my Fender pro tube Twin is also near 100 lbs. Too bad I love the sound so won't never switch up amps.
I have an Orange Micro Dark, and it’s a cool amp with great sound Clean & dirty sounds (with the amp & with pedals) I use it more than the other amps I own
The best deal on a guitar is the black Guild Bluesbird (List $1,270, but showing up for $450-$500!). Incredible specs, with only recommendation, change out the 3-way pickup switch for genuine Switchcraft 3-way (shorter length). As far as amps, US Designed and Built Crates!
This is cute (actually pretty great video) Now for a real budget- clean amp and drive pedals which is more convenient for live use: Same guitar, though I'd go for my favorite PRS SE 245 for the same price. Bugera V22 tube amp - 439$ Line 6 HX Effects - 699$ On amp + cab you saved 598 (cheapest head and cab) - 439 = 159$ On pedals you saved 1120 - 699 = 421$ You saved 580$ and now you have a 22W tube amp and a high level multi effects unit that would give you all of the effects you need + great for live use.
I'm like 2 hours from you guys right now. Also, should've went with the Orange Rocker 15 over the EVH just because it has 2 channels. I think it was $650 when I bought it. The band I was in played everything from Fleetwood Mac and Tom Petty to Metallica and Van Halen with that thing. My pedalboard is just a dyna comp, TC Spark through the loop for a lead volume boost, EHX silencer, and a NuX Atlantic delay & reverb and for a long time my main guitar was a used Samick LP that I paid $200 for. We were one of the best cover bands in the whole state. You don't need expensive stuff to gig. Just do it!! 15 watts is plenty loud enough to drown out my super loud, heavy-handed drummer. I can't even turn it up halfway or it's too loud....I'm also running through an Orange PPC2x12 which is...just amazing. So I'm sure that helps. That part of my rig is the most expensive piece. Still fits in my JNCOs but kinda sucks because it weighs 78 friggin pounds

I agree that a single 12" and 212" is totally gigable. The guitarists in my band use an EVH 50 watt with a 212 and a Mesa 50 watt with a 212 and they have no problem keeping up with my 1350 watt bass head, going through a 4x10 cabinet. On smaller shows, we each drop down to a single 12" and are all 3 still loud enough to keep up with our drummer.......who beats the drums like he's trying to kill them.
Hey Fluff and Uncle Ben , although it’s a fun video you guys made , I Love the humor. I do have a couple of issues with your picks , first of all the guitars , a 700 and 900 dollar guitar is in no way the best pricepoint you could have found , any mid prices ibanez , Chapman , schecter , squire would have done the trick much better , the amps I can’t fault exept maybe the fact that a combo would have been a better pick because you didn’t need to buy a external cab

The Les Paul modern has coil tapping and phase inversion too. It makes it a pretty versatile guitar! Bet that would’ve cleaned up the EVH even more

Nice vid! You definitely dont need a big rig to gig (haha), I prefer the Marshall DSL20hr with a 2x12 Cab, like a MX212 as for an affordable setup (I personally use the SC20h plus JVMC212 cab with different speakers to mic them and mix them). But great rig there with the 5150! Love it!

Decibels add in a log scale, which makes a 2x12 cabinet only 10% louder than a 1x12, and a 4x12 less than 20% louder than a 2x12. BUT to keep the same volume levels on each speaker you will need to increase output on the amp a lot to drive a 4x12 to be 20% louder than a 2x12, and a 2x12 to a 1x12. Basically you need 2x the amp output to increase 10% on dbs.
If its volume you are looking for, go for a 1x12 high output.
Would have gone with a boss katana as they offer so much and sound really good when dialed in, or something like the headrush mx5 for the versatility. Guiter I would have gone with something like a schecter or Jackson and with a little fret work that dead simple... Bam budget rig
Nice video. The next episode should be the lightest rig for a gig. With all the cabinet sims, power pedals or small heads, and lighter cabinets you can easily cut the weight way down without impacting volume and sound.
It depends on the genre, but the dv mark stuff it's so light that once I almost lost my balance because i put a lot of force into lifting the amp (since it looked like it had a normal weight) it was a great surprise
Anyone know what the red jazzmaster looking guitar is that Fluff's holding in the cover photo and at 1:06? I couldn't find it on sweetwater's site for the life of me. It doesn't look like a fender because the headstock shape is different

With a D I you can use a 5 watt amp. But I unfortunately got my stuff when I was younger and now I'm "stuck" with a couple heavy 60/100 watt combos. My Boogie in a road case weights damn near 100 lbs and my Fender pro tube Twin is also near 100 lbs. Too bad I love the sound so won't never switch up amps.
REVV G20 & 2*12 cabinet? Handles all situations! Epi LP , sure. Or PRS SE? Depends on neck feel, personal choice.

I use it more than the other amps I own
The best deal on a guitar is the black Guild Bluesbird (List $1,270, but showing up for $450-$500!). Incredible specs, with only recommendation, change out the 3-way pickup switch for genuine Switchcraft 3-way (shorter length). As far as amps, US Designed and Built Crates!

I'm like 2 hours from you guys right now. Also, should've went with the Orange Rocker 15 over the EVH just because it has 2 channels. I think it was $650 when I bought it. The band I was in played everything from Fleetwood Mac and Tom Petty to Metallica and Van Halen with that thing. My pedalboard is just a dyna comp, TC Spark through the loop for a lead volume boost, EHX silencer, and a NuX Atlantic delay & reverb and for a long time my main guitar was a used Samick LP that I paid $200 for.
We were one of the best cover bands in the whole state. You don't need expensive stuff to gig. Just do it!!
15 watts is plenty loud enough to drown out my super loud, heavy-handed drummer. I can't even turn it up halfway or it's too loud....I'm also running through an Orange PPC2x12 which is...just amazing. So I'm sure that helps. That part of my rig is the most expensive piece. Still fits in my JNCOs but kinda sucks because it weighs 78 friggin pounds

I agree that a single 12" and 212" is totally gigable. The guitarists in my band use an EVH 50 watt with a 212 and a Mesa 50 watt with a 212 and they have no problem keeping up with my 1350 watt bass head, going through a 4x10 cabinet. On smaller shows, we each drop down to a single 12" and are all 3 still loud enough to keep up with our drummer.......who beats the drums like he's trying to kill them.

Hey Fluff and Uncle Ben , although it’s a fun video you guys made , I Love the humor. I do have a couple of issues with your picks , first of all the guitars , a 700 and 900 dollar guitar is in no way the best pricepoint you could have found , any mid prices ibanez , Chapman , schecter , squire would have done the trick much better , the amps I can’t fault exept maybe the fact that a combo would have been a better pick because you didn’t need to buy a external cab
