I was first introduced to the wet/dry setup in the 80s by a friend who played a Boogie thru a single EV 15 (dry) and used a Fender Twin for wet. It’s a glorious and very useable sound.

I mostly use wet/dry at home, but I also enjoy stereo and some days(yesterday in fact) I also play in mono with and without effects, so they're all good! Great video Kris!

Weeeheeee!!!! Thanks Kris! It definetly not work in all situations, depending on the style and what you want for a song, but I'm trying the full panned wet dry rig for surf and I'm loving it! I was doing it on stereo before but, this way, much better, I retain the clarity on one side and I drip on the other, niiice ;) great, I'll give you credit for that ;)
I use wet/dry and stereo all of the time. With a small band it really makes the sound big. Mono sounds so small and thin. Love stereo and wet/dry.
Awesome, man! Thanks! I learned a lot! I'm recording at home these past few months. I'm still at the beginner's level when it comes to rigs, amps, mixing, etc. even if I basically learned to play the guitar 20 plus years ago. It's kind of overwhelming. But when you explained it here, it's easy to understand and process what you said.
By the way, is it the same thing about wet and dry if I record my dry signal to one track and the other track is wet? And just panning both almost at the center. Is that also the same concept in what you've explained?

I've never heard about wet-dry rig before. I play generally via iPad and bias fx app which has signal split feature but I thought it was just for stereo rig. What a cool idea to divide crunchy dry signal from clean wet one. I'm going to try it out right now. Thanks for the video, Kris. Like it, as always
It works fantastic :) I'm not sure if I do it right but it's awesome. Like you have pure sound and sound with a ton of effects at the moment :) and you can blend them independently. The sound character doesn't change at all, just level. Yesterday I thought I found good sound and I can just play but now... No sir, I have many hours to spend on sound tuning. Damn it! :)

Kris…. I use an AB/Y pedal with an isolation transformer (important!). Signal A goes through a little Supro where I can really get the tubes cooking for a nice dirt signal. Then I run the B signal through my pedalboard into a Fender Twin Reverb (headroom for days) to get the modulated clean signal. Magic!
I'm waiting for my order to build my fist pedalboard and with every of your videos I have new ideas what kind of gear I absolutely need 😂. If this continues that way I will get into serious trouble 😳😅

Stereo for me, always. I've been playing a stereo rig for 30 years, and it has the right sound for my music.
Thanks for the pointing out what’s best for what. It would be useful if you describe the problems coming up when using two or more amps in a chain, like ground loop and phasing.
Another great video and as always amazing playing. Getting to dual amp setup thanks to Mick & Dan lol but have many questions. Only play at home and have 2 setups. 1st is Yamaha THR10x & THR10 original with Radial Twin City ABY. Sounds so much bigger for minimal fuss practice. 2nd is Marshall DSL40CR & Boss Nextone Stage with Twin City ABY. Can I place delay/reverb (Source Audio Collider) in effects loop of one amp and drive pedals before ABY? Can I place some drive pedals post ABY with delay/reverb either in effects loop or after drive pedals? Would stereo be better for home use and if so would drive and effects go into front of amps or into effects returns? Am rather confused 🤔
Thank you for a good "for dummys" approach! That wet dry panned left right did really feel terrible and its good to know that beforehand! Worst case would be mixing it towards audience and never knowing why everyone left!
Any comments how multiefects such as line6 pod go would work in this? E.g dry to amp on stage and wet to front of house? Also been trying to search how the preamp from those work with amps having no effects loop. Is it total waste of money or even ok with some amps as long as the cab sim is left out. I'm using fender deluxe reverb tonemaster and been looking into adding pod go with it.

You mention that a Wet-Dry rig also is possible with a multi-effects processor. I own a Boss GT-100 and would like to try this Wet-Dry option, but what exactly do I do?

Most of my playing these days is completely digital in IK's Amplitube. I've always heard that you can get a "bigger" sound out of a multi-amp setup, but when I try it, I don't seem to notice any real difference. Some of it is likely just my ear, but I think part of the problem is I don't know how to do it so it works well. I know you are supposed to use complimentary amps or at least EQs, but I am not even entirely sure what that means.
But this video makes me think that I should try it in more of a Wet-Dry setup and maybe that will get me closer to what I am looking for. At the very least, it will at least encourage me to explore more features the software has to offer. So thanks for the ideas and information.
I found this with my fender micro mini amp. Stereo effects from my computer speaker's and woofer. Sounds so awesome.
Ever since I bought a jazz chorus amp I’ve been wanting to do stereo but my pedals (mostly) don’t have stereo ins and outs. I really want to slowly upgrade and get to stereo for my home rig, anyway thank you for this information it’s really helpful
Great video, I´m gald you use the D20 so often since I own one, I just wish you had talked about wet/dry/wet I´m currently considering setting up a stereo W/D/W rig after trying wet/dry.
I bet that w/d/w rig is going to sound insane! Yeah, the D20 is such a good amp. Takes pedals better than most other amps, it’s portable, loud enough and has the Two Notes cab sims built in if you need it. Killer!
Wet/dry (or dual mono how some purists like to call it) is awesome. Huge fan. It sound big at low volumes, you can run your modulation effects very high and still have very articulate sound. And it work with 2 very different amp. Downside is, that your wet effects need to have analog dry thru.
Stereo is also very nice, but somewhat unnutural for guitar sound and also dont work very well, if you are not in centre.
One day I’ll venture into wet-dry territory... one day!! Mind blowing sounds there, my friend!
I am a beginner guitar player. I just recently heard about stereo setup. I have a Squier 10 amp from a beginners kit and a Fender 20 amp. My new EchoVerb pedal has the stereo outputs. Hooked it up and I am hooked. It really opens up the room. Having two different powered amps seems to work very well.

My favourite wet-dry rig is Troy Van Leeuven's rig from Queens of the Stone Age at their Like Clockwork... tour. While Josh Homme had that thick beefy midrange heavy riff sound, Troy used two AC 30 for a wet-dry setup to compliment the songs where that ambient/modulated sound is needed.
Perfect match! They know how to benefit from having two guitar players!
Troy V. has been a big influence of mine for a while, as well.The Queens know how to mix sounds and frequencies.
YES, to stereo! Even best when you can wire your guitar to spit the bridge pup out a different line than the neck pup, and run two independent pup->pedal->amp chains.
I usually use wet/dry and make each track stereo. Sounds thick! 😎

At home WDW is phenomenally fun, clear and wide. I typically run WDW at home and mono on stage ( back when I did go onstage)
I was just thinking how the Wet would be the ideal in Stereo in wide, while the Dry in the center. Glad to know it works.

Very good topic. I agree with all you said but I’m not sure about using a wet/dry with amp and speaker simulators. To me it doesn’t make sense if the sound isn’t coming out from 2 different speakers and it would be just like a mix of dry and wet from the same amp .
I use 2 fender champ 40's with a twincity aby pedal...many pedals as well...great sound for solo act...
How about running stereo out of say Boss Me70 pedal. One going to mixer direct and other going thru an amp which is mic’d? Will that work?
I do both, wet stereo and dry mono
I've been running wet/dry for years. So I thought, until this video. I guess what I do, would be more like a wet/dry stereo. I run two separate amps and cabs, But I have always run my guitar though what ever pedals I like, then at the end of the chain, I run a stereo effect. Not necessarily using the effect just as a splitter. Coming out of that left and right. One side goes to right side effected but real time. The left side goes through delay pedal with the mix 100% wet. This delay has three memory settings. The first one I turn the time as fast as it will go. The second slightly longer and the third a little longer yet, basically at slap back length. Even in the first setting which I use most of the time, the sound is huge.
@7:13 the ox box has a stereo output, how do you set it up in your stereo example? Pan it all to one side? Or take out only the left channel out of the ox box?
If I use the OX for one side of a stereo mix I use a „mono patch“ and still use both outputs. You can pan the two mics and use a stereo room mixc in there if you want to. But you can also leave everything in the middle, so that’s what I do in that situation. Cheers!
How do I know which amps will pair great?
Totally agree. In my band playing mostly hard rock with a second guitarist, I am still going mono, because most of the time I am using just a bit of reverb (on gigs not even that) on the rhythm tone and a bit of delay for solos. At home in my "music man cave", I have a stereo rig with two tube amps but not primarily for stereo effects but just to get that full sound in the room. When recording my rhythm guitar tracks are most of the time nearly hard panned with two different takes and amps layered on both sides, summing up to a kind of "quadrophonic rig".

Do my effects necessarily need kill dry function for wet/dry?
Con wet/dry would be I have no control over the mix of my effects right? So every effect is 100% wet and at the same level. I can’t make my reverb less loud than my delay right?
I like to run my modulation effects to both amps but only one amp gets delay or reverb. Sometimes I'll run my boss ce3 to both amps in stereo ad well
Wet- dry setup is the best. Jimmy Herring uses for the entire live show he played..the sounds glorious .
Is THE critical piece of equipment for WET - DRY setup an ABY box? I didn't see that in any of the pedal overlays during the playing time. thx.
Exactly. You go from the last drive pedal into the A/B box. One side goes straight into the dry amp, the other goes into modulation and time based FXs.

So I have a Fender Deville for my clean tone aswell as most of my drive and miscellaneous pedals running thru it ; and I have a Marshall for my heavy dirt tone. I have a Boss A/B switch to go between the two.
Now, I don't gig ATM, so this is just my home arrangement. I got sick of having to fire up another amp and rewire my pedals whenever I felt like playing clean for a bit...or to use the dirt, if I was already on the clean amp. Or alternatively, using the Marshall clean channel just for convenience sake, even though I find it inferior to Fender. Or vice versa with Fender and the dirt channel.
This way, all my best tone are at my fingertips. Or... my TOE tips!

Discovered wet/dry around the same time as discovering tps. One con though, its loud and not suited for practising alone whilst being aurally addicting as well.

Yeah that’s pretty much reality, isn’t it? I don’t bring my amp and pedalboard because of the (majority of the) audience. I take it to entertain and inspire myself on stage. Haha! And then there is that 5% in the audience of course who do give a damn about your playing and your tone. It’s nice to chat with those after a gig. Man... I miss gigging quite a bit.
I can recommend WD for pub/small gigs only if you provide a "ready-to-go", cab-simulated and already center mixed blended signal to the service guy.... two mics in phase are often not an option...
Absolutely true. You should only use two amps on stage of the sound person knows about the possible phase issues and is willing to solve it. Haha!

How to make a Wet-Dry center mix in opposite to a hard panned mix, what settings do you need in the DAW?
Hey, it’s pretty simple. You could leave the first (both tracks) in the middle. Or if you want to pan the guitar to one side (because of another guitar player for example) than pan the wet track to the same side as the dry track. Basically keep the dry and the wet track together in the mix. I hope that made sense.
Dude for me the best concept of tone is to control how much of the stereo image you want to fill and how intense you want to play through an effect. Kemper has served me better than standard pedals in that way
I’ve never been interested in a stereo rig. I don’t really care much for that back and forth ping ping delay or wide stereo chorusing effects? I’ve found that a stereo setup, no matter how beautiful and ambient it can sound, just like a mono setup when you turn up your effects mix, it tends to lose the punchy transients that I love through a dry mono tone. So I think a wet/dry system would be best for me. Just as you explained, you can have your direct mono punchy sound then you can mix in your wet sound to taste. But, that’s just me. I guess it depends on your style of music and playing.
Is it wise to use a vox dry and a mesa for wet sounds. Using their own drive channels, and not a drive pedal for both? Greetz Didier
Oh totally! That will probably sound amazing. Just don’t forget to put those wet effects you don’t want to distort in the Mesa’s fx loop. 👍

Wet dry wet is like a souround system with a center in the middle for direct speech and left right for ambience and music. Not a bad choice.

There's an even bigger reason for having a wet/dry rig that no one ever seems to know about, when you run a delay pedal for example in front of an overdriven tube amp, the delay gets all distorted and nasty sounding, like really crappy.. try it, it's because the delays from the pedal keep adding more input into the front end of your tube amp and it starts this nasty cycle, It doesn't happen on solid state amps for some reason. But If you take a line level signal derived from your main tube amp, (because that's the main source of your great tone that you want effects on without degrading it), usually from some type of load box with a line out, and run that to your effects set full wet, then to another clean amp, you get that beautiful clear delay you've been looking for, it's the same with any time based effect really. There are some hit songs where you hear this distorted delay, I can hear it a mile away and I hate it, but it obviously worked for some popular songs, I just think they didn't know what to do about it actually. ha

Here's my Conjecture:If you can determine how 7 Priestly Trumpets,let's say each with an XL.470 Bore, knocked down the Walls of Jerico,then I think you will have discovered the ROOT Cause of why a once beautiful Stereo Field got so ugly.A rule of thumb is that Guitars should record at -18db.A Trumpet's apx db production is 120.If I add my guitar or Trumpet to a Backing Track,the Song's File and all it's information changes.Ayn Rand's Objectivism discusses how 'More is NOT better' in interesting detail.

You didn't talk about the ultimate Soundrig. One dry Amp and another two (or 2 Direct channels to the DAW) for the Stereoeffects. Ask Devin Townsend how it sounds 😋

The Dry needn't be %100 Dry either,- you can have some less extreme effects / settings on the Dry, and only the longer delays,heavier reverb, ( etc)on the Wet.The idea is maintaining the impact on the Dry, which doesn't necessarily require a " pure" signal.Where this truly stands out is when using two very different amps.
Obviously, the style is going to make big difference, something which is rarely accounted for.With certain" Shoegaze/ Post Rock" arrangements, reverb, delay , and other modulations( Vibrato, Vibe, Chorus, etc) are often placed PRE Drives, and many Garage Rock sounds are built on " Vintage" , mono,but heavily reflected , signals.
Live and Studio are very different realities; so much gets lost in live mixes, you learn quickly to economize the set up.
Once you start working with multiple amps, it can be tough going back.The basic principle of wet/ dry is the most practical and flexible, IMO.

Not every wants to "cut through the mix". In a lot of genres of music, the guitar sound is based upon blending into an overall mix. This is particularly the case with a lot of late 80s/early 90s shoegaze/dreampop/indie rock, which happens to be the genres in which I play. In my old band, when I was on rhythm guitar, both the lead guitarist and I used stereo rigs. But one thing that was always true was that we never played the same tones at the same time.

And to be honest I also used to play the cheapest Ibanez with a first generation Line 6 POD for many many years. If someone told me about gear back then I could’ve saved so much money with not buying the wrong stuff over the years.
