Did We Get Wet-Dry Guitar Rigs Wrong? [Proper Wet-Dry-Wet Vs TPS Wet-Dry]

  • Exploring the ‘correct’ definition of wet-dry… and why we don’t do it
Life too short for long RUclips videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ info below.
Welcome to the show! Regular viewers will know that Dan and I are simply in love with ‘wet-dry’ guitar rigs. The term causes a soupçon of mouth-frothing apoplectic rage out there in the world, however, because there are many different ways in which you can approach wet and dry signal explanations.
Erm, probably should say at this point that ‘dry’ in this context usually means just a guitar amp with no effects except whatever overdrive it’s making. ‘Wet’ usually refers to all other effects: chorus, phaser, flanger… but most commonly delay and reverb.
Now then. We’ve evolved to having a ‘TPS Wet Dry’ approach which doesn’t really satisfy the ‘correct’ definition of the term (and indeed causes much of the mouth-frothing mentioned above). So this video is all about unravelling that whole deal and comparing a ‘classic’ wet-dry-wet rig with what we call - eventually - ‘TPS Wet-Dry’.
Why use wet-dry at all? What’s wrong with just a guitar, amp and cable? What about front of house? We talk about all that and more…
Still with us? Let's do this…
    Enjoy the show!

almost 2 years since I stumbled upon the rabea heavy tones video. Had no idea what wet dry was and that it would change my life on guitar tone forever. Been playing for 20 years now and I’ve learned more in the last 2 years then I have in the previous 15 from you guys. Your by far the biggest influence to me and I really can’t thank you guys enough for your honesty and wisdom on your experience with music!

Probably about a year and a half here but absolutely same story. Playing for two decades and I was in such a rut with my playing ability and tone. Nothing about picking up the guitar was inspiring at all anymore. Fast forward to today and I’m absolutely loving my tone and it’s caused me to break through a wall with my ability and fretboard knowledge as well! I’m playing for hours multiple times a week and literally lose myself in the sound every time! Massive thanks to D&M and also a fair amount of love to the leg ends in the Facebook group! ❤️🤘

That is the most amazing take on the 80's rig ever. What is most shocking is that even with that much kit, it is pretty simple compared to all that wild rack stuff we had. Remains impractical as ever, but so amazing and so fun. Great playing, too. Lovely stuff.

Cool video guys! The true W/D/W rigs sure are glorious! Thanks for making this video to help evangelize this approach! Around 11:00 I would say the more common way than the mic'd dry amp feeding a mic pre and then the wet processing effects, was instead, using a Line Out Box or having a line out built into the amplifier. The line out was a line level output tapped off the output transformer with a volume control to attenuate the level to match up with the effects it was feeding, this is different from an FX Loop Send (or preamp output). The Line Out is what Steve Lukather, Paul Jackson Jr., Jay Graydon and others did with their Rivera Modded "Stage II" or "Stage III" Fender amplifiers. They did often have buffered effects loops added as a part of the mod, but for the Wet/Dry/Wet thing would use the line out and either load the Rivera amp with a resistive load (if they didn't want to mic the dry amp speaker) and then feed their stereo effects to a stereo power amp and then wet cabinets (and just have two cabs on stage with the dry and wet in both cabs) or they would mic the dry amp and feed the wet processing effects via the line out that were all in a stereo parallel mixer (except for chorus, compression, and maybe EQ), that would feed a stereo power amp and wet cabinets for L and R.

The overdriven sound is really great and better than other amps like the Blues Junior. No tone stack loss so pretty loud.Less versatile but loved by blues players. 2 of them would be glorious..didnt Jeff Beck use them at some point? Mick would probably know

A working-mans version of the OG wet-dry-wet is to use a solid state stereo combo like Roland KC-220 / KC-990 to run your stereo wet signal. Your wet signal doesn't need a pair of boutique guitar amps. No guitar tech required LOL. Just have the house take the DI L/R out of the KC and hard pan them and your done. Run the DI into an Iridium cab sim if you need that depth. You can stack the KC-220 on top of your combo amp, or put the combo amp on top of the KC-990 to get the Left-Center-Right effect.

I think for the listener of TPS - having "only" the recorded impression - the wet/dry/wet is just more the way you're used listening to records, so that's the sound! I use the "TPS wet/dry" and it is just a great room experience and in addition an interesting form of sound design by matching amps/pedals etc..

Thank you for this episode! I've been exploring variations of wet-dry over the last decade, so I was really interested to see and hear your demonstrations. I agree that for gigs a smaller footprint and straightforward setup for yourself and sound engineers is the way to go. My guitar is a Telecaster, but my main instrument of performance is an electric viola; I began experimenting because I wanted to maintain the viola tone, bow articulation response and clarity that I was already getting, and then be able to add and control the effected sounds separately. I've used one amp with parallel volume pedals - one dry the other 100% wet, two amps with the parallel volume pedals but the wet with some original sound (basically the TPS format) , two amps in series where the second amp is wet, and three amps set up wet-dry-wet with the outer amps in stereo. My basic wet is reverb - sometimes just the reverb on one of the amps, other times a reverb pedal with a big 0-100% range of level, tone, and length. I like smooth resonant plate or hall reverb sounds, and following that with a really slow OTA phaser, usually with both at subtle settings, but sometimes huge for what I call the "space viola" sound.

I think that I need Mick ... to come over and twist knobs for me. Wonderful examples....and those tones can become so inspiring to the moment! Great job. Wet-dry-wet is perfect for studio stuff. The TPS wet-dry is what I would be using live...and often, even for recording. They both have their place. The wet-dry-wet can indeed sound majestic.... MASSIVE .... and absolutely beautiful when tweaked for amazing stereo effect! Love them both for their individual high points.

I own one of the last of the great 80s rack amps, the Hughes & Kettner Access, a two-space rack preamp, now a virtual collector's item. It has a Midi Preamp with three channels, a midi-programmable graphic EQ, and three midi-selectible effects loops, followed by H&K's popular speaker simulator outputs in addition to the normal stereo outputs. The Access is meant to be a "Bradshaw rig in a box". The thing was to put a TC-2290 in the H&K's loops, and an amp head like my Mojave Marshall clone in the H&K's midi-selectable "External Preamp Loop", and you could have the whole wet-dry-wet rig just right there. It is so close to perfection!

Evidence suggests otherwise. 🥰 And lest I forget, _THANK YOU_ for giving us the wet/dry with vibrato to create natural chorus. How glorious that is! ❤️ Also, to my ear, that Jam pedal sounded better in vibrato mode wet/dry and wet/dry/wet than it did in chorus mode. YMMV and all that. Very instructive.

I use a TheGigRig Wetterbox to create a Wet/Dry using 1 amp by blending my wet effects in parallel to the direct signal. It's certainly no a true Wet/Dry, but it definitely massively improves the tone at gets pretty close to the sound of my wet/dry setup with two amps! And, I don't need to schlepp a ton of gear 🙂

The visual mismatch was driving me crazy, haha. The wet/dry/wet sounded epic, but I'm glad TPS wet/dry sounds nearly as good. I've built a Trainwreck Express clone, and just ordered parts to build a Trainwreck Rocket clone. The Express will be my dry amp, the Rocket wet, and they will be split in a 2x12. Epic show! Amazing playing !! And you know ... I think you guys have come up with an incredible improvement over the "original wet/dry/wet/whatever".
After attending That Pedal University for a couple of years, here is how I have applied my learning to my budget.
Guitar > Polytune 3 > Radial BigShot ABY
    > B Out to Blackstar HT-5R (either Clean or Dirty channel with Reverb on a bit)
    > A Out to TC Electronic HyperGravity > Nobels ODR-mini > Tumnus Deluxe > Boss CE-2 (which I've had for nearly 40 years) > Flashback II > Keeley Verb-o-Trem > MXR Classic Overdrive > MXR 10 Band EQ > Katana 50 MkII (usually clean but I can use Flanger or Phaser.)
Mick would say that there will be latency causing phase problems but I can't hear it at apartment levels. Flipping the Phase switch on the BigShot sometimes makes a small difference but usually I don't hear any difference.

Finally you guys addressed the elephant in the room... this modern day wet-dry-wet isn't technically what we old time sound engineers / guitar players used to do. I was was running the whole wet (left) - dry (center)- wet (right) way back in the mid 1980's. And just like Robben Ford I needed a 20 space rack filled with stuff ! 2 different Guitar pre-amps running into two stereo SPX-90's. Those SPX's went into 4 channels of a 12 channel keyboard mixer that had 2 Aux(fx) sends on ea channel... so I'd send ea Aux to other FX units.. an Eventide and a Delta Lab timeline delay and those would return in stereo to the other channels. I also inserted compressors / gates on the pre-amp channels. And I had a full pedal board with about 8 fx pedals and a custom switching system / router that I designed and built because there were no companies making those things then. The Bradshaw system was $5k to $10,000 in 1986 money. I didn't have that kind of money. So I built everything myself. Built my own fx pedals, switcher / router, cables, even started building my own hand made guitars and finally tube amps. That rig sounded GLORIOUS !! But the rack weighed 120lbs and took a small van to haul it all around in. And every night I had to troubleshoot the gremlins... i.e. the odd ground loops / hum. It was a lot of work ! In the end... by 1991... frustrated I was suddenly struck by a thought..."Geez.. all this just to sound like a really good Marshall cranked.... and it doesn't even sound like that anymore " So I sold it ALL and bought a 50w Marshall head and two 4x12's... which quickly became 2 heads into 2 full stacks.... which slowly lead to hearing loss and insanity. ahhhhh so many vague memories.

    • @Joe-xe6ev
      @Joe-xe6ev 2 года назад +3

LOLss... nowadays I'm running my pedal board into a 3 channel router that sends out to 3 separate channels (clean ch, crunch ch, lead ch.). Those 3 sends go out to any 3 of a dozen hand made tube amps I own / built.. The tube amp outs are all patched into a patch bay that I can then patch the 3 amps I'm using into 3 Torpedo Captor X's. Those 3 Captor X's have stereo xlr outs which I send , along with my Kemper stereo outs, into an all tube custom made 16 channel mixing console going into my UA interface. So I'm still running at least 10 channels. Now this rig sounds freakin epic ! All my amps are handbuilt / custom... 1968 Plexi, 69" Laney Supergroup, Dumble clone, Trainwreck clone, Jose Arrendando modded Superlead clone... and about 6 other custom amps. No more dry channel though.... it's all wet/wet. Ultra mega mondo stereo.

I run a split post-drive pedals. Dry signal goes to a Hi-Tone DG50 in the middle. The wet signal eventually splits into 6 lines that get remixed into 2 outputs that go to a Two-Rock Bloomfield Drive on the left and a Victory V40 Deluxe on the right, all 3 amps sitting on vertical 2x12 cabs. For the wet effects, a Harmonius Monk gets split to dual-mono, a Free The Tone Future Factory into L-R stereo delay, and a Source Audio Ventris into L-R stereo reverb, all run in parallel. I run the wet amps at around 69% wet mix. Definitely not a gigging rig... it's purely a piss-the-neighbors-off rig. The biggest challenge I have is balancing levels between the 3 amps, but once it's dialed in, it's epic. Many thanks to you guys for the knowledge and motivation to put this together. Curses to you guys for the money I've spent! Just kidding... keep up the great work!
