      It's fantastic, you did an amazing job. One thing I'd like to see change with it though is the position it holds the user. I noticed that you almost have to walk at a heavy slant, like it's holding you back rather than supporting you upright. Other than that, it looks great and like a lot of fun!

    For the future of competitive vr games, I think the simplest solution would be to make the use of omnidirectional treadmills detectable by the game so it can send you to servers full of other people using them. Basically, like how PC and console players are often divided.
    Only problem is that the player bases are probably small enough as it is that you wouldn’t want to do that yet. Maybe in a decade or so.

    • @jaredflynn3750
      @jaredflynn3750 2 года назад +42

      Personally I'm more a fan of the idea of not using VR treadmills at all and instead using room scale VR and giant arenas I had the idea of basically making a 1-1 scale pavlov map thats the exact size of a football field with different environments to fight in that you could select like the holo deck or X-Men style danger room lol. Basically anyone with access to a football field could have a arena scale tournament with their friends running around the field. I always felt omnidirectional treadmills would be more for people who don't have access to Big spaces like that but still want to be able to Sprint around

    • @davisbradford7438
      @davisbradford7438 2 года назад +27

      There is a visual technique that makes you walk in infinite circles instead of cardinaly. If that is integrated into VR game map design, we could do away with treadmills. VR motion sickness is also alleviated with the technique as you body actually cannot tell you are walking in circles.

    • @Aycheffe
      @Aycheffe 2 года назад +8

      @@davisbradford7438 can you explain more about this. I often walk the perimeter of my room and turn the world the opposite direction when i hit the physical corner of my room. is this what you mean? @@NextGenVR wow! that tech is so interesting. Thank you for making me aware of it. I don't see running in those being a thing in those anytime soon... but I love the portability.
      The one thing all these different devices have in common is a Return To Center. How they do it is different but the goal is the same. Even the expensive true omni directional treadmills have issues like the delay when you stop walking but the treadmill keeps going even for a split second.
      The one thing I noticed in the KatVR's recent gameplay videos is the guy is standing erect and putting his foot forward toward the front edge and letting his foot slide back to center. Thrillseeker and others on the earlier Katwalk C like Nathie and VoodooVR are leaning, starting with their foot in the center then pushing it back. I don't know how difficult it is to do it how KatVR are showing on these videos but it looks to make a huge difference in realistic movement and way less strenuous.
      I guess I will soon find out.

    This kind of stuff is going to be key for generations going forward, heart disease is still a pretty big issue that plagues a lot of the world and with gaming culture continuing to go more mainstream platforms like this can really bridge the gap for gamers to have healthier lifestyles while still being in the comfort of their own home.
    If anyone over 130kg/287lbs is struggling to find motivation to lose weight - I think losing weight to start using this device (or these devices) might be worth it in the long run. Pricewise I get it's a little expensive but considering the good 'gym' style treadmills are normally like over $1500-$2000 it's not that terrible in comparison.

I mean VR has helped me lose a pretty good amount of weight given my genetics. And I don't exactly have the self esteem to be able to be outside or in a gym working out in front of other people... very few people look cool exercising in real life and no one looks cool exercising in VR to the people watching them but INSIDE VR we are all badass Jedi so... that solves that problem for me personally.

Stick to RPGs and exploration games like Skyrim or No Man's Sky. I will say however it was incredible to play Payday 2 on it, until I tried to play Heat Street. I think the best device for VR would basically be an exo-skeleton mounted on a robot arm that you strap into. The exo-skeleton stops the motion of your limbs the moment they wouldn't be able to move in the game and applies some force to you as feedback. So when you run the device would stop your feet the moment your feet touch the ground in the digital world.
    The robot arm would be to simulate your orientation in the digital world. Like if you do a flip. Your real strength and fitness wouldn't necessarily matter in the digital world bearing exceptions. It'd be augmented by the machine you are strapped to. So you would be able to flip all you want. Swimming in the digital world would be a little more bearable on your body as well.
    And it wouldn't have the problems of modern mobile exoskeletons when it comes to power. Because you don't need an onboard battery.
    We already have the technology for something like this. It just needs to be made. Even if it would be very expensive at first I can see VR Arcades opening up with many of these so people will just have to pay for their time on their machines instead of buying one.

    I had tried mobile vr before, I thought I knew what vr was, oh boy, I was truly wrong. My whole family was baffled by how intuitive and immersive using a vr headset really is.
    Additionally, I am extremely happy I went for a quest instead of any other headset. Air link works surprisingly well, I love the fact I don't need any cables and I can play anything my pc can run while in a whole other room.
    (I understand this video has nothing to do with the quest, but since this is the latest video I suppose there's a higher chance thrill will see it.)

    I really hope in 5-10 years we start seeing full VR setups on the market. A powerful 'base station', probably with extremely fast GHz dedicated connections, and sensors to put in the corners of whatever rooms you want, with those costing 25-50 USD apiece. Coming with omni-directional treadmill optional, plus full body tracking through either a suit, or AI-driven real-time video analysis. Given the performance Console creators can squeeze out of hardware to cut costs, I'd love to see what dedicated hardware and software together can do!
    If they can sell these at MSRP of 5k or less, then people are going to be okay with living in really, *really* cramped apartments soon. Imagine being able to explore the entire world from a 1.5 meter square.

    Imagine one of those types where it actually is a treadmill moving under you, big enough that you could jump as far as you can forward and still land in it then it recenters you in the space. That would be peak immersion!

    • @Maverickib
      @Maverickib 2 года назад +20

      Smarter Every Day kind of did a video on something like that. The issue with that design is how disorienting/motion sickness inducing the act of the treadmill "correcting" your position would be. You jump forward, but then feel yourself moving backward to reenter you. Tracking devices would also have to know the difference between movement and the treadmill recentering. You jump forward, you move forward in game, but when the treadmill recenters you in the room, how does the game know to not make it seem like you're moving backward in the world?
      Just doesnt seem like that concept will be easy to make a reality. These low-friction style treadmills make a lot more sense from design, production, and implementation viewpoints.

    • @ThunderDraws

    • @Demmrir
      @Demmrir 2 года назад +8

      @cameron tennant He IS saying that. He's saying both things. And his concern about the tracking is irrelevant. It's a trivial problem to solve. The feeling of inertia is still a legitimate concern. Likely, to make treadmills like that practical, they would effectively have to give under the force of your own friction--sliding away as soon as you start moving your feet--and then provide just enough resistance to keep you in the same place. It should be a tractible problem, but it is certainly a lot more difficult than a slidemill. And since there are sheets of floor moving rapidly and motors driving them, there's a lot more room for physical injury if things go wrong in ways that exposes the manufacturers more directly to lawsuits.

Head tracking, hand tracking and six degrees of freedom have brought us closer then ever, at aa affordable price too. Just 2 things holding back VR, movement and visuals. Third one being sensory feedback but thats probably a long ways away, although, haptic feedback already exists for tactile feedback and object impact but its not yet affordable nor is it fully realized.
    When we get full freedom of movement and better visuals (without a $3k PC), VR will truly be all immersive.
    Sidenote: Headsets have their flaws too but it seems, until we get away from Fresnel lenses, that will be an issue. Most people can look past those lens artifacts though (literally)so its not a deal breaker.

    I feel like something to be able to spin around in place would be better. Still have to use sticks but it makes VR require less space. Even at 13 square feet that's a fraction of a good VR space. Tho it will also need to be easy to get in and out of for mass appeal.

      @@jokerzyo because its not meant for that. If you want, you can buy yourself some stuff from a hardware store and build a nice spinning pole you can tie yourself to. The product in the video is specifically meant to enhance immersion. If you want to solve a problem that barely exists, like just spinning in place by yourself, you can do that.

    One of the things supposed to be added in that is a feature to tilt the platform based on the terrain we are walking on.. making going uphill harder and downhill easier
    But I am amazed to see that we have reached this level of technology in just a few years of vr development!

    I am thinking of all the non-gaming applications for this sort of VR technology and excited for the future. Think of all the ways simulators are used not just for fun gaming times, but real world serious reasons: flight training, practising job tasks that are difficult to practise out in the field (space, military, engineering, medicine etc), practising and analysing sports data (I'm thinking of those virtual golf places where instead of hitting the balls onto a driving range, they hit a net with sensors indoors). People who struggle with agoraphobia, PTSD, or other mental/stress conditions that mean they would benefit from VR therapy to work on those issues.
    VR goggled alone are usually a little expensive and require a bit of learning to utilise the best, so there are already VR arcades popping up around the place. I don't know if any of them have omnidirectional VR setups, but it would certainly be interesting.
    Once the omnidirectional treadmill VR is mastered, the next step would be to make it easy to switch between treadmill and non-treadmill movement in the VR games (e.g. use buttons to move long distances, but jump back onto the treadmill during a fight scene). Maybe someone will use the Kinect movement tracking technology with the ODT to make a better system. Because if I need a break from Kinect gameplay, I can just hold my arm out to pause it and go sit down/walk away without having to unstrap myself and get down from a lubricated platform.

    This was a great review, and I think for someone like me who doesn't get out much (I'm a software engineer who spends a ton of time on the PC), I could get plenty of fitness out of something like this plus the immersion. Definitely hope to pick one up. New to VR, but I have absolutely fallen in love with it.

    Now I really want to try this with Breath of the Wild. That was the first game I ever played that made me feel a true sense of scale, and with this in VR it would be even more incredible (probably exhausting though).

    I find a huge difference in immersion when using real locomotion/room scale compared to thumbsticks. Walking in real life feels so much more immersive!! Once one have learned walking with the C2, will it be as good as walking for real (room scale locomotion), or is this just a glorified version of walking-in-place (that didn't do anything for me, immersion-wise)?

    In Dune they have to desert walk but it gets normal over time. Slide walking is equally valid as a way of locomotion and with games allowing different movement speeds etc it'd be even better

    Well, I guess one advantage to being too broke to buy something like this is, while I wait to eventually be able to afford one, the technology continues to improve. If I had been able to afford it, I would have bought one of the early ones last year. This one has a ton of improvements, and I'm at a point where I could theoretically afford one, but it would be an insanely bad idea given my other responsibilities. Imagine how many more of the kinks will be ironed out by the time I can afford one and not put myself into potential disaster. (For example, I would imagine a future model having a retracting upper harness like backpack straps that extends enough to be able to better balance a "swimming" user more comfortably than just a single waist loop.)

    VR gameplay has been a revelation...I play action-shooters on hardest-difficulty with full-immersion: so physically standing, turning, crouching, some small steps. Currently enjoying the Half-Life 2 VR mod. Did a 5-hour session last night (with an hour break in-between).
    What I've noticed in my case - 44-year old Dadbod here - is that I sleep deeper & more restful after long VR sessions. To compare: the sleep-quality after a few hours sitting down watching TV or playing flatscreen games is inferior...for obvious reasons, I guess: the body & mind isn't really tired enough...it hasn't 'earnt' its sleep.
    A VR Treadmill looks to be the natural next step forward (literally!). The KAT C2 is probably the best on the market, at least for moderately-affordable enthusiast-prices. I think I'm gonna go for it!

    The shoes are getting to a point where they could just be a thing that straps on to normal shoes. All the electronics are on the bottom, so the hard part would be attaching it stably.
