exactly! Meta has already been investing big-time money for years to the point of losing billions, to this new industry, and is now reaping the rewards. I just don't see google investing similar money to VR right now. I think they're just waiting for Meta to make all the progress and then just copy them.
Unless they make an earth shattering amazing device, it will fail because google wont fix it or be competitive and only get a small marketshare until they close shop and leave people with paperweights.
Just upgraded my Quest 2 for 3. Spending the holidays in Rome, Italy, and Mexico City with "Slice of Life" 8k 180 3D videos, playing Steam games like Firewatch (that works very well for a mod), explore the world with Wander and Google Earth VR (I was inside a museum in Malta recently checking out their collection of medieval armor), and watching 3D movies in a luxury virtual apartment or 4k movies in a cinema with Skybox/Big Screen. But yeah, VR is dying because Apple didn't sell enough $3500k headsets that don't play games or even work with RUclips when 1/2 of Americans can't even afford a $1000 emergency. If VR tech was a gimmick like 3D TV's or the Nokia N-Gage, it would've died a loooong time ago. If anything, this all reminds me when dial-up modems and Windows 98 first appeared. It was slow, complicated, clunky, expensive, and required a lot of patience while the tech very slowly got better. Now look where we are...where even an elderly person can use the Internet with nothing but a cheap smart phone and free Wi-Fi at McDonald's. This tech isn't going anywhere and we can only guess what the future will look like. I always wanted to visit NY, and yet, I'm now getting kind of sick of it despite the fact I've never physically been there.
Once I got over the nasua and puking, it was fun...... I think I was born a couple of decades to early to really enjoy VR... I last about 45 mins before I have to step back...

@@michaelroberts7770 Hey Michael, I luckily don't get sick from it and can keep the headset on for hours. That's a bummer it affects you that way. Maybe you just need to get used to it, but I'm curious, have you looked into getting the prescription lenses? I don't use them, but they're worth it from what I've read. Everyone says they are a game changer. You should look into it. I forget who makes them but a quick Google search will tell you. 👍

I do aswell but there are definitely a few other really good channels with plenty of helpful and entertaining content. I'm not going to promote other channel names in this comment section, but if you like channels like this one, you should definitely look at the VR side of youtube because there is a surprising amount of high quality variety.
Lets See.... Googles OUTRAGEOUS history of Abandoware makes any announcements they have totally laughable and pointless... what Valve does certainly carries a lot more Weight!
Value doesn’t have a great reputation for their hardware either. They come up with something amazing, but then a few years down the line they just simply stop and they refuse to make a better/newer version. Steam link, steam controller, the index, and steam machines. They didn’t make newer versions. Sure you can still buy the index, but at this point, why would you? At $1000 there’s better headsets, the index is not a viable option in any case.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sony updates the firmware for the controllers to be incompatible with Apple headsets. Sony has enough poor sales of their VR headset, they don't need Apple buying their loss leader controllers to outsell then.
@@ThrillSeekerVR Funny thing about today too, I was literally thinking "I haven't seen any Thrillseeker videos lately" at work today after talking some VR stuff with coworkers. Then this pops up XD
@@ThrillSeekerVR For whatever it's worth, I will absolutely click all the videos you make and watch them all the way through. When news becomes daily, I skim, but now I know everything in a video will be worth watching because it's a compilation of the biggest things going on.
With the Deckard, you've hit the nail on the head Recently, some stuff has leaked about Valve working on a 2D to 3D translation layer, wich would render these 2D flat-screen games in 3D and apply to every single game on steam (that is playable on Linux) It wouldn't be like a native VR port though, more like the 3DS, where the game has depth but still played on a screen infront of you
The most painful, painful, thing is, the lowest hanging fruit for great VR content is VR modes for PC flatscreen games. (ie. just like VR mods, but official, more polished, more comfort options.) No need for a full port to standalone, no need to optimize for limited PS5 performance, and often the community does half the work for you. But the de-facto platform holder for PCVR, Valve, won't fund it. There's so many great flat2VR mods for top indie games that could be made official with a bit of money and encouragement, like Deep Rock Galactic, Outer Wilds, etc. Or even Valve's own games, Half Life 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal, etc. Then there's so many huge games that could really sell VR, if a larger company like Valve could make the deal and the right bribe. Cyberpunk. Baldur's Gate 3. Resident Evil series. etc. But they won't do it, and there's no one else who could. The second most painful thing, is Sony not doing it for PSVR2. Even their own games. Even frickin' Astrobot.
The only reason people are playing less and less vr is because there are just no good new games to play (There are some, but 4 good games a year is not much). In my personal opinion meta should just take the nintendo switch approach. Keep the same good/decent hardware and focus on making a lot of super good exclusives.
They should be making games targeted to pcvr and ported to quest, so many games just look like bad mobile games and the most popular/iconic VR games are basically all on pcvr
Current battery tech will make sure that Meta has to do exactly that. Dream case scenario for stand-alone imo is basically micro-oled with PS4-era graphics @500-600$...could be possible maaaybe at the end of this decade.
Agreed. Although, I find enough non-game related stuff that keeps my headset compelling. Everything from superlative hand-drawn VR art by guys like Goro Fujita to what little VR 180 3D media is out there, and of course, sideloads, mods, and emulated vintage games.
This year has definitely been a Rollercoaster. Started it pretty much hating life and not expecting things to improve. It's the end of the year and I've learned to skydive, bonded with so many jumpers and am now working as a the lead parachute packer for my local Cessna-182 DZ. For once in a long, long time I'm looking forward to the new year.

The most interesting thing about Vision Pro using PSVR 2 controllers is that you cannot buy them separately from the PSVR 2 HMD. I'm not sure, with how Sony has treated it, that they'll ever sell them without a headset combo.
Personally dont feel like any of these companies, including google will dethrone meta, but in turn this will ramp up the technological advancements in the vr space due to competition being raised which i think is the true winning point for anybody, the consumers win. (Until we have to buy a $200 vr headstrap from meta)
Meta started the fire by changing their goals and name. Quest will remain in the lead for maybe 3-5 more years before these devices all even out in capabilities.
I don't trust Google to actually stick with this like Meta has. It's cost Meta a ton of money and research just to get this far. Is Google willing to do the same or will it back down?
What I want from hand tracking is the ability to seamlessly switch between hand tracking for things like opening doors and cast magic with my controllers holstered at my waist for weapons and items. Imagine a SkyrimVR mod that could do that, and using a Kat Walk for locomotion.
I appreciate you mentioning games like Triangle Strategy. I do enjoy first person perspective VR games, but excellent immersive titles don't have to be, the shining examples, of course, being Moss and Moss II.
I've been clinging to my ol', beat-up Index for so long now. Resisting the allure of the latest Quest headsets in hope we'll get something new from Valve. And the rumoured Deckard is seeming more and more promising for someone who only wants to use VR to play games. Hopefully we finally see something in 2025.
I'm still using a 1st generation REFURBISHED htc vive with Index knuckles. they don't even make my headset anymore and I wish I had an Index but now I'm hoping something new won't break my wallet.
@michaelbrownlee9497 with no disrespect towards you personally, but "how about meta f#$ks off?". You want the challenge of innovation through competition.
At this point all I’m even looking forward to is the next Valve headset. Meta shows no sign of pushing super cool features like face and eye tracking into the mainstream at an affordable price. Lord Gaben, we’re waiting patiently
So nice to put the disclaimer of what gameplay we're watching in. Would've gotten a lot of questions for it otherwise. This will help. And in case you've missed it: it's called "Behemoth"
man, thats gotta be a super peaceful way to VR. ride your bike out to the county, find a meadow or power line divide and just sit in the middle and play. love it.
Nah. It's the way tech is heading for a portion of consumers. Stadia was unnecessary in a world where Xbox Cloud and GeForce now already exists. AndroidXR will likely reshape the wearables and smartphone market. They've specifically gone after Meta, who's currently years ahead of the curve.
Even Google, always slow and uncommitted to the party, has realized that their continued existence will rely on BOTH halves of the XR future. That's why they're being so cagey about partnerships and legal powerplays for rights. Whoever wins the OS war for AR SmartGlasses replacing (or at least pairing with) the phones in everyone's pockets, AND immersive headsets for the VR internet of the future.
I've been subbed for years, but only recently just got into VR. I see what all the hype is all about. Also this video is tremendous, not only was it not clickbait, but the part where you discussed Valve and what they could do for VR makes me hopeful for the future of VR.
No more headsets for me until the Deckard comes out. There just isn't one to rule them all and if Apple failed at it then everyone else will. The only company I have confidence to release a headset I want to do anything else beyond games is Valve. Maybe Valve will make the OS and software open enough where the community can get what everyone else wants.
I think that's where the fight over the OS comes in. You can't pull off that promised Metavurse/Grid/Netspace/Matrix future of a complete transformation of the Internet from a bunch of hyperlinked 2d documents to a 3D _planet_ until the One True OS to view and interact with it emerges. For all Windows failings, it provided a universally adopted skeleton for Browsers to emerge on. Edit: And it's worth noting that both Michael Abrash who is the Mr Spock at Meta Reality Labs science division and GabeN were both production leads of the very _first_ 3 releases of Windows back in the Way Back When. They, of ALL people in the VR Pantheon, should have been leading the charge for the Universal VR OS and Browser/Net Language. Everyone thinks Paul Allen and Bill Gates when they think of the invention of Windows, but it was more Abrash and Gabe Newell. Two of the most important people behind VR today right now.
If we're being honest with ourselves, Apple wasn't even trying to be "one to rule them all". They intentionally neglected gaming (no surprise there) but completely misjudged appetite among non-gamers to look like total clowns. If they'd embraced gaming, they might have partially bank rolled second generation development on sales of the first gen, instead of spending the entire first gen products lifecycle trying to break even on R&D.
If you’re right about deckard this could be fucking sick. It’s sounds like everything that’s been missing from the vr landscape, and the first hardware to actually tempt me into buying in to said landscape. *If* you’re right. C’mon Gabe, lead us to our salvation once again, you can do it.
@@GraylightSynes Oh no! A gameplay mechanic! Guess I should go back to Google and Facebook after they have had countless lawsuits about selling personal data. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Valve pretty much mainstreamed Proton and added some nice features on top. If they can do the same for VR Injection (on top of Proton allowing Steam deck capable games to work at all), even just injecting a stereoscopic mode for “cinema” play, that would be huge. Bribing or enticing a few devs to make slightly better VR modes would be icing on the cake if it started a trend. I hope he’s right about that.

This is a really thoughtful take on this tumultuous time in the industry. You put into succinct words a lot of the thoughts I've had around Google/Meta/Valve. Totally agree with you about the input scheme of the Roy controllers. It should make it significantly easier to know which button to push when. Can't wait to see what Valve has been up to!
Would be incredibly cool to see android phones connected to a vr headset with a cable the same way the apple vision pro requires a battery pack, except in this case the phone acts both as a battery and as an android xr injector. This would enable the headset to possibly be as lightweight and compact as a bigscreen beyond, while having the full computational power of a modern smartphone.
@@MrRoomba2321 quest 3 battery is 4800 mah which is the average phone battery nowadays. Should last at least as long as a quest 3. If you need more power you can always daisy chain a battery pack. Heat is a non issue, there are many ways to prevent it from warming up your skin.
@@FERGX12 I will agree that battery life may be better than I initially thought, especially if you just daisy chain batteries. But I disagree with heat being a non-issue, seeing as the phones use the screens as a heat sync. By keeping it in your pocket there's no airflow and thus no way to cool it down. At least, that's to the extent of my knowledge, I don't know if they somehow managed to make modern phones any better in regards to passive cooling. Even my quest 2 gets very hot after a decent vr session. And that's with a fan and massive heat syncs built in that take up like 80% of the size of the headset. If a standalone headset needed that much cooling and still couldn't use the full extent of it's cpu, I don't imagine a phone would fair much better.
That is exactly what I wanted when I got into VR, I just wanted to experience normal 3D games in VR. I didn't even care if I had to use regular controllers. Just to see the game through the headset. Regular games.

Google has failed to make a synergetic android ecosystem like Apple's. Every computer has chrome, smart tvs are android but they still don't work well together. They are all separate individual devices. Google just can't do it. Android XR is going be an independent thing that doesn't integrate with your smartphone or PC. Not very different from the quest.
Private companies and small teams can say fuck all to making profit. They innovate and Foster communities that develop. Then when they get big the leaders are change to people who only care about profit. Profit oriented stuff cannot grow shit. Only milk shit ino
Youre comparing apples to oranges. Apple can only do it because they control ALL the hardware. Google just controls the software. Not even that. Because almost everything running googles software is modified by whatever company is making the product. So it will never be as seemless as the apple ecosystem. But it works amazing for what it is. MY entire home is FILLED with android and windows products. From Gaming pcs, servers, full smart home, multiple galaxy devices, watches, cameras etc it all works together great. As well as apple products, no. But thats the cost of open source software and not owning crap apple products. SO im good
I'd argue the difference is Android XR will likely be open source, meaning someone will finally make a more privacy focused firmware. Meta doesn't exactly have the best track record with user data...
@@patrickrosington1174 look at the trouble they are having with quick share formerly nearby share while they have a perfect opportunity to instantly give cross platform integration with chrome but they are wasting it. Now they have to rely on Microsoft and their your phone thing or Samsung with their flow thing. Being open source isn't why they are behind. They are behind because their departments are fragmented and can't focus. This is the issue that killed stadia and why the Google graveyard is so massive.
Thanks! Always love the shows and get how they aren’t as regular. Enjoy your Christmas and time with family. We all have so many stresses going on and I think VR is going to stay steady, I’m really excited for it, our community will live! It’s too cool to stop now
About Android XR: The one thing that holds VR back the most is that everyone is racing towards being the company that controls the platform VR is run on. Since Android XR, Meta Horizon OS, and SteamOS all being Linux there is some hope that VR is just going to be Linux in the future and you'll be able to install every software store on every headset. This will help a lot.
I got back in vr this month. I am happy that you did too! I love your content and I was planning to watch some of the old ones. Thank you for making this video ❤
I started looking for other vr content creators that cover the major news that happen, but I haven't found a single one where I get satisfied by the end of the video. I wish you all the best :D
For some reason, this videos hits different 😅 It left me with a weird feeling of being lost not knowing what to expect for the future of VR AND technology as a whole. You don't release a ton of videos, but oh god they are soooo well made. Thanks for the content. (Oh and ✌ from France to all riders)
I come from the future. Google released their AR/VR headset called the G1 and discontinued it after only 6 months because it "didn't meet sales expectations," leaving people stuck with a headset with almost no games or apps
Are you still planning to release that video about the VR lenses designs? I find these technology things really cool to understand, and how they work and such, and would love to see a video explaining about them!
VR isn't dead, but its going that way. There are so so so so many educators and buisness's that are chomping at the bit to use VR for Education and training. Meanwhile, the content is either non existant or so price prohibative that they can't afford it. On top of that, using headsets for Edu and Enterprise is a serious pain in the butt to manage. I was hired specifically at a college to create VR sims, manage XR technology, and teach with XR equipment and it has been a nightmare. For example, the college I work at wants to use VR apps on the quest store. Meta won't let us purchase the apps tax free like we MUST as a government taxpayer funded entity. Therefore, our only option is to directly contact the makers of said software and ask to buy the software tax free. Most small VR companies don't even know how to do this or ignore our emails. If we can't buy tax free, the college can not buy the software. That means if I or an Instructor really, REALLY, wants software, it comes out of our own pockets. Over 4 years I have spent over a grand on VR software for my work because META refuses to make anything Gov/Edu friendly, while also claiming how great the tech is for Gov/Edu. VR itself is not the problem, its the artifical roadblocks that Meta has thrown up and refuses to solve.
For real, if Meta was smart, they could reclaim all the headsets that start going obsolete every 2 years as a trade-in program from retail customers, distribute them to schools and create a dedicated VR Education Program division to help visually teach kids everything from geography to chemistry and visual math, CAD...The killer app that sold the most Apple computers was Oregon Trail in schools. Spawned a whole generation of computer literate students and future programmers. It wasn't the Atari 2600 that did that. They need their Oregon Trail, and they need to put headsets on 5th graders.
although i some times miss the frequent uploads your quality has gotten so much better to wear im just like hype asf to get a video notification from you
Google isn’t going to do anything significant. It’s easy to see their long list of failed projects and ambitious endeavors, as well as their phones, which are still in the early stages of development.
I would disagree, google make a lot of experiments to check and understand the market, however when it comes to project that might shape their future they take it the fullest.so it might be a big deal
If it's a means to compete with Apple and Meta in this space, then they don't have to do anything game changing, just making software for the hardware is good enough to make a lasting impact
Hey Thrill, nice to have you back! There's a noticeable increase in the quality of most of the clips in the video. Did you increase the bitrate during export? Whatever you did, keep doing it :) Also, please consider producing your videos in 60fps. It looks much better that way, especially when showing gameplay footage. And maybe produce them in 1440p (or even 4K) resolution, that way youtube will encode them with much higher bitrate, increasing the quality further. Anyway, happy holidays and let's hope 2025 will be great for all of us when it comes to VR, and in general!

I think the real reason vr has taken a drop is things like the “meta verse” or people trying to get in the xr or ar space which in all reality is just really gimmicky and gets annoying. Eye tracking and FOV-rendering are going to be needed for bigger adoption imo. We need to reduce the compute & render overhead to just whats necessary both for standalone and connected headsets. Just my opinion. I've recently switched back from VR to triples for simracing (semi-reluctantly) after 7yrs. I found I was always struggling to stay afloat, keeping fps smooth was always a battle.

The power-move from Valve would be to open source the OS for the Deckard with the intention that the OSS community would create a VR-OS that you could install on other VR-hardware, effectively turning Quests and other ARM-based headsets into Steam headsets sort of like how Bazzite turns ROG Ally and Legion Go into a Steam Deck .

Lets See.... Googles OUTRAGEOUS history of Abandoware makes any announcements they have totally laughable and pointless... what Valve does certainly carries a lot more Weight!
Valve abandoned VR hardware and keeps PCVR going as a pity gesture.

@@GraylightSynes continuing to update SteamVR (which also includes backend updates for Deckard) would be pretty silly if that were the case

Meta doesn't need to buy it out. Just look at the graveyard of google products.
Sony: Psvr2 controllers work with apple vision pro. Also Sony: no, we don't sell psvr2 controllers separately from the headset.
They make more money that way
Maybe we can buy spare vr2 controllers from the apple store
I wouldn't be surprised if Sony updates the firmware for the controllers to be incompatible with Apple headsets.
Sony has enough poor sales of their VR headset, they don't need Apple buying their loss leader controllers to outsell then.

Agree
With the Deckard, you've hit the nail on the head
Recently, some stuff has leaked about Valve working on a 2D to 3D translation layer, wich would render these 2D flat-screen games in 3D and apply to every single game on steam (that is playable on Linux)
It wouldn't be like a native VR port though, more like the 3DS, where the game has depth but still played on a screen infront of you

at this point just call it someday newsday

What kind of setup cyberpunk vr would require? Truly a cyberpunk level of technologies
The only reason people are playing less and less vr is because there are just no good new games to play (There are some, but 4 good games a year is not much). In my personal opinion meta should just take the nintendo switch approach. Keep the same good/decent hardware and focus on making a lot of super good exclusives.
Agreeeeeeeeeeee
Also the experience with LCD headsets is rather bland. I would stay in VR a lot longer if it was a micro OLED headset.

This is going to join stadia in the Google graveyard.
Rent was due, finally another Tuesday newsday.
Meganex is the perfect headset for what is possible today, as long as you got the money for it
If we're being honest with ourselves, Apple wasn't even trying to be "one to rule them all".
Whenever Tuesday Newsday is on a Tuesday is when civilization will cease to exist.

Tbf that would probably work well for all of 10 minutes before the phone battery dies or starts melting the flesh off your leg.
Just slap a cooler on the phone or maybe manufacturers could sell kits of gaming phones with proper cooling with an included vr headset.
@@Loanshark753 That's actually not a bad idea for a product. Like a phone case designed to actively cool the phone when it's in your pocket for vr.

The number one sold electronic on amazon is the quest 3s. How is that even close to dead ?

If it's a means to compete with Apple and Meta in this space, then they don't have to do anything game changing, just making software for the hardware is good enough to make a lasting impact
Hey Thrill, nice to have you back!
There's a noticeable increase in the quality of most of the clips in the video. Did you increase the bitrate during export? Whatever you did, keep doing it :)
Also, please consider producing your videos in 60fps. It looks much better that way, especially when showing gameplay footage.
And maybe produce them in 1440p (or even 4K) resolution, that way youtube will encode them with much higher bitrate, increasing the quality further.
