I was a framer for close to 40 years and I can't imagine doing all that cutting without a set of simple sawhorses. I really like my fingers where they are.
I have built the saw horses under your recommended and you will see them used in the next video!
When you have horizontal joints between T111, it's best to use Z flashing. Or you can caulk it, which might work, although not as well for as long. The sides of your building have tiny eaves, so rain is going to hit those upper boards, flow down, and then get in behind the lower boards. Probably it'll be OK because of your house wrap, but the flashing would be even better. Or, if you're planning on adding another layer of exterior siding in the future, that would also address the issue.
That makes total sense, I will caulk it all and then solid stain it in the spring. I think that will hold and I can always recaulk it every two years or when it needs it
I most definitely want to flash the roof and window’s properly. I’ll have to watch some videos on best practices

When you cut boards, you should put two cinder blocks on a level surface, and cut so the end piece falls off. If you take a bit of caution, it may prevent you from injuring yourself later. It's fun to watch your videos, your build is happening really quickly! Be safe !

I was a little concerned about how you attached your building to the posts before, but the addition of the blocking around the posts supports the weight much better than relying on mechanical fasteners (screws). What a fabulous adventure you have going on. Enjoy every minute!

Make sure you put in your headers and jack studs for your windows and doors before installing. If you don't, in a years time the glass will crack, and you'll have a hard time opening and closing due to the downward pressure from the roof and structure settling

Perhaps add a 1x4 or 3 Centered over the seam. Caulk the seam first add the 1 x 3 nailing it then caulk the top of that piece with a good paintable caulk. A fine bead should work.

Hey, love the content! 2 Questions for you. 1.) Did you need a permit to build this cabin? Some townships do not require it apparently. 2.) Why did you chose to buy land and build 5hrs from home? Was there not options closer to where you live? I'm in the same boat, looking for land and chasing that dream. Living vicariously through your videos dude!

I did not get a permit for a couple of reasons. One there is no local inspector in our area, I highly doubt one would come out to our property so I’m not going to get one. Another reason is I don’t want to apply for a permit I don’t believe in. It’s my land, my skin in the game, I’m not looking for permission from the government to house myself how I see fit.
The reason I bought land 5 hours from where I am is because it was what I could afford. I own a house in NH and I believe we are top 5 most expensive states to purchase land in. Durning Covid everyone from NYC & Boston moved here and doubled the average price of housing. The average price for 5 acres here is like 200k but in Maine where I’m at you can get 5 acres for 10-20k. I’m going to release a detailed video next week about buying the land, why we bought where we did and how much it costs and some tips to help others with.
If it’s your dream chase it with an obsession. I had told everyone I’m going to buy land. I watched videos every night. I daydreamed about it and that manifested it to the opportunity we are at now.
Hoping there is affordable land in your area, I would love to follow along with your adventure.

Way too late now, but you are supposed have put hurricane clips between your roof decking. And use roofing tacks for your felt paper.

You should have used metal flashing between the lower and upper T-111 siding.

How come you didn't do your Ridge rafters blocking before sheeting,
It’s tough working out there and I’m not a legit carpenter. So I had to jump around to get it done
Not 100% sure that you didn’t do this but when you sheeted the roof, I don’t think you staggered the joints.

It's separate the men from the boys! You a few loads of gravel and a bobcat to make a little path.

use the framing square while your cutting the wood helps you cut faster and straighter

My wife and I are going to try again with something like this we're starting to buy a lot and wish to use logs from the lot to build a cabin if not it'll take a long time to build cause of little income
We considered building with logs and getting a saw mill but I don’t have any real equipment to haul the logs to where we would set up the saw mill. So far the building materials have been pretty expensive but much less work than sawing the logs so it’s a trade off
A saw horse would make your cuts easier and safer. You could put the other end of the board on a windowsill.
I finally built saw horses! I don’t know why it took me so long! 🤯
You need to make some saw-horses to cut your boards. Looks like you are cutting in the window area.

You really need a header installed over your 5x6 window you need headers over all doors and windows on load bearing walls

We just had so much laying around that I had to burn it to make space to store the fire wood!

Did you frame with 2x4 or 2x6 s
I framed with 2x4 for the walls and 2x8s for the ceiling. My next cabin I want to frame with 2x6 in the walls so I can put in thicker insulation
Looks amazing man. You should go over the joints and seams with a weather sealant to help keep it airtight and critter proof. Are you planning to add insulation?

We have the floor fully insulated and will go full insulation throughout the walls and ceilings. Then going to do pine v grove for the wall finish
@@Practicalforest I meant like a liquid flash sealant, you can look it up. But they make tapes, too! Just something to make sure bugs aren’t getting in.
With the insulation it sounds like you will be all set for winter up there, super inspiring! I hope I can build something like this one day.

Hi, you say the moisture barrier you put up last on the front side bec you ran out of the other one is not the same as you say. Can we agree that the moisture in a house comes from the inside. Americans make there house so odd, to us. From the warm inside of a house you shall have a moisture barrier so you do NOT get wet inside the walls/floor and ciling. Using only Tyvek on the outside and make a ventilated wall from the outside is the better way to do it. Now you got a plywood that is filled with glue and can not breathe and on that a roofing waterproof "paper", no chans for the walls to breath to the outside and your moisture gona stay in the walls. Also no ventilated roof. I also wonder why all do there flooring first, now you got a wet insulation in the floor and same there no moisture membran and why install plywood between the wall and the floor all the way to the outside. Now you can not lift the floor sheets and dry the floor insulation. Much better to just install the floor joists and do the rest when the house is water proof.

A couple of pointers the roof decking joints should be staggered and there should be a small gap like 3/16” between the rows vertical thermal expansion and contraction. I hope you don’t have any issues. You guys did a great overall job and worked your butts off. Congratulations on the cabin.
Thank you so much for the advice brother. We don’t leave a small gap but we stagger the pieces of plywood. I bet that metal roof is going to get hot this summer, that makes complete sense.

At first our truck was 1300 ft from the rd and now with the drive way it’s 400 feet.

@@thomasdausch8557 it’s usually dry but this year we had the most ever recorded rain fall in history. It rained 25 out of 27 weekends from the spring to the fall. That and I ripped all the vegetation up around the whole site. We plan to throw a bunch of grass seed everywhere

I build a single pitch 12x20 myself and I kept the house wrap on the floor while building. There was a lot of “in and out” and house wrap helps keep the wood in good condition, no mold. I also did a fascia and went flush with the fascia.

Do you already have firewood? If you don't you should save the bigger logs cut them up and stack them somewhere come so you have wood to burn this winter . You live in Maine it will take approximately two to three cords of wood to heat in the winter time. If you plan on living in that cabin. Just a little knowledge to help you out
Great advice. I want to make a place to stack the wood, even if it’s a simple stand. I’ve been burning as much as possible but will need to make a fire wood pile next weekend. Should I cover the wood that I stack?
Enjoying the series of videos, I hope to one day do the same as you and be independent of most things like power, water, etc. Living off the land has always been a dream.

What size nails did you use for the siding?
Whenever you she’s a house with T1 11 you should use a metal Z flashing on top of the other sheet when you put the other sheet on top of it
I just found this out last week! I am going to caulk the cracks on or try and flash them but there is no taking them off at this point. What do you think my best option is?

I would bring my wife and have her do some work. Also I would bring a chair and sit back with a glass of tea and watch her work. I do this and watch my wife cut grass or clean my roof off. After a good number of years you can pick up this tip.😅
