Thank you! I live in Florida and could not figure out why mine was so foggy. I also sweat a lot. So this video put things into perspective. Appreciate it!
I've heard the sweat is also an issue with fishbowls, but being in the midwest, the fogging might affect as well. Thanks for the heads up! I'd love to try one someday.
I've always wanted a fishbowl for a long time and after this review, I might consider trying to get one. I live in a relatively cold place (definitely not warm unless it's summer) and I don't think the fog will affect me so much. As you've said that the fishbowl provides clearer vision, I think that has hooked me. Great review lol. My friend has a fishbowl, maybe I'll ask him for his opinion
I think the Bauer Concept 3 shield will improve my game. I just entered the A hockey tier and it would improve my on ice vison and plus its got some nasty stye. Something I don't have. I've also been playing and loving the sport of over 6 years and always have wanted one.
Thanks for this. I'm using a half shield for coaching and just got back into playing. Had a couple close calls lately so I'm reviewing the options again.
Thanks for the review. I'm in Dallas so your comment about fog and southern climates resonates. I've been unhappy with a cage so I'm going to give the "fishbowl" a try!!
I found mine fogged up too much and didn't flow enough air. The Boulder Hockey Shield Zero Plus cage is what I use now. Smaller clear plastic visor and flows air nicely.
Get a titanium wire cage; the wires are profiled such that the slim side is towards your face, makes a huge difference as it almost doesn't impair visibility yet provides all of the benefits of a true open cage.
I have really been thinking about the switch over to a bowl from my cage. I do not want a visor yet just because of the risks with it. This video really helped me with that decision. I think the bowl will definitely help with my vision. Keep up the great vids!
That is why I got a hybrid cage with visor having a notch around the nose and cage with holes above the visor. Zero fogging at all thanks to good air circulation.
@@pajerhockey Mine is from bosport but I saw fischer, hejduk and many other companies making the exact same model. Two of my teammates also decided to pull the trigger on them.
Im 34 years old and just starting playing hockey after wanting to since i was little. On the fence about a fish bowl still. Currently rocking a cage but too scared to use just a visor.
Very interesting. I play in Canada and in different arenas where most are not that cold, and one super cold, like freezing cold. The fogging issue only comes up in the freezing arena, but before each game I wiped anti-fog on the fishbowl, and it's absolutely not that bad and I don't even have a tower on the bench. In warmer arenas, I never get any fog at all. It's a strange contrast to where you live. I've been using the fishbowl for a good 8-9 years, vision is so much better that the cage. If you have a cage and you see great....no need to switch.
I've had my fishbowl for 5 months now, I play d1 high school hockey, and the best method for anti-fog is to wash the fishbowl with shampoo and once you rinse off the shampoo your fishbowls should never fog up
I recently switched from a silver profile 3 cage to a CV1 bubble. My impressions after having used it a handful of times: First and foremost, I've had no fogging. I do live in the northern midwest though, so YMMV. Impressions from others seem to be that the CV1 doesn't fog, unlike the Concept 3. I haven't tried the C3, but I'm inclined to agree regarding the CV1. As you'd expect, vision is unobscured. With a cage, my brain quickly ignores the bars which blur out of focus. It's not terrible and you get used to it, but it was enough of an annoyance to be curious about how the bubble would compare. It's not groundbreaking. I haven't had to deal with any scratches yet but I'm assuming I'd ignore it like I would the even larger bars from a cage. I wouldn't say the bubble is hot, but rather, the wind in my face from using a cage is like having a nice luxury. Casual chit chat is a little more annoying now as I have to increase my volume a bit in order for others to hear me. No change in how well I'm able to hear others though. If I need to scratch my face above my mouth, I can't just poke through the bars since there aren't any. For me, I wouldn't say the change was so drastic that I'd never go back to using a cage. Not having to deal with any sharp metal corners ripping up my gear/bag (not really even an issue) is the only thing right now that makes prefer the bubble over the cage. I've been feeling a little more self conscious though about my ugly mug being easier for others to see. 😄
@pajerhockey I used the CV1 for at least 6 months and went back to a cage for a month to compare. The bars were annoying knowing what visual clarity I can get with the bubble, so I'll be sticking with the CV1. No issues with fogging.
I play high school hockey and my season just ended. I am deciding between a cage and a fishbowl. It would be so much better to have better vision on the ice. Also, this video really helped thank you!
I had to switch from a half visor to a bird cage after getting a puck to the jibs 10 years ago. I could barely handle the fog on my half visor, my face emanates too much heat. Couldn’t imagine what a fish bowl would do
I tried a visor once that someone gave me, it was old and scratched and it kept fogging up, so I went back to a cage. Since then the rink has had a major refurbishment, and people who wear both visors and fish bowls say that fogging is no longer an issue. So I guess it depends on how effective the air handling is where you are playing. Just a thought, that it may work in your rink, but maybe you could run into issues at an away game.
I actually found the biggest problem with fish bowls is that it is too hot. I sweat a lot, so when there is little ventilation, buckets start coming down when I take off my helmet. The fog issue was a problem at first. However, after I started using anti-fog wipes that you can purchase at REI, it wasn't too bad. The other anti-fog methods I tried were garbage. One wiping before a game lasted me the whole game. The fishbowl is a little heavy as well, but that's not a big problem. I was thinking about going back to the fish bowl just because of the improved visibility. Maybe if I win one, I will give it another shot. 😀
@@pajerhockey Just make sure you get the wipes from REI. I tried a bunch of other stuff from different companies. Nothing worked like the wipes at REI. I think they are meant for ski goggles, but they worked well for my visor the last time I used a fishbowl face mask. That was over ten years ago, though. Hopefully, they haven't changed the formula.
I’m a sweater and find the ventilation to be perfectly fine. Also doesn’t feel much heavier than a cage. The fogging does get annoying, though. I found Dawn dish soap works amazing for preventing it. I rub it on both sides, let it sit, then wipe it with a microfiber cloth.
Great review! Just broke my jaw wearing the half visor so now I’m figuring out which I want to switch to (honestly because the wife is pressuring me to protect my face). 😂
Sorry to hear that! I went through something similar when I lost my front two teeth from a stick while wearing a visor. My wife says I have to wear a full face shield now haha. Hope you have a speedy recovery!
I totally prefer the visor over the cage, the fog is an issue though.. Sometimes at the end of the practice I just cant see anything at all. The cage is like a prison with bars infront of my face, dont like that at all.
MY son plays triple A travel ice on the Atlanta fire and his birthday is coming up and he has been asking for an fishbowl everyday when comes home from school
Wow I’m surprised after all these years they still can’t make clear face shields that don’t fog. I remember playing minor hockey trying one and quickly returning to a cage. Thank god I’m an adult now and don’t have to wear either, I’d rather have increased access to my vision. So my face gets beat up a little…..it’s hockey.
I'm just getting into hockey I have bought a helmet with no mask so I'm currently looking for a mask for my helmet. I've always liked the fishbowl style so I have better vision and can focus on my stick handling, With you saying that it would be better in cold climates it seems like a perfect option for me living in Chicago! Thank you for the informative video I think I have made up my mind on which type of mask I want. "Edit: Verified"
I play with a hybrid and it seems to be a decent compromise, the increased ventilation on the bottom half seems to vent out out my breathe while getting the visibility around my eyes. I'd say it's a happy midpoint.

they are also front heavy. some people may notice some serious strain on the neck from the weight of the bowl. it pulls to the front with some force. drove me nuts.
It would help see the puck better and I won’t have to switch to contacts as much and since I live in a very cold climate I feel it would be good for me
Been using a visor for the last year since I aged out of minor hockey. Always hated the cage so switched to a visor as soon as I could but with a couple close calls would love to try the bubble.

I live in Finland, it's winter time, and my damn full face visor will still fog up after fucking 6 coats of anti fog buffed on it... I just quit... going back to cage.
I don't know if I would change as I really never tried one and when I'm playing I really don't notice the bars..if I get better vision , that could improve my game
I live in Canada and mine was also fogging a lot after a couple months using it so I went back to my half visor. I haven’t tried it but I’ve heard that using shampoo or body wash does prevent it from fogging though.
You shouldn't add an anti-fog to your fishbowl or visor. The problem is, they already have anti-fog on them and if you add a new one, it breaks down the original causing it to fog. Simply rinse with water from the beginning and you will have no problems. If you want to add something, your spit actually works better than any anti-fog does.
I got a skydiving helmet from Bonehead and it's literally impossible to fog - I tried hard just huffing inside of it and it simply would not fog. No idea how they did it but that's something to look into.
hello i used to play with a visor but then i keep taking my hand off my stick when blocking shots to cover my face, im back in my cage but missing the vis of the visor, pls i want the best of both worlds agian xxx
Switched from a half shield to a fishbowl after taking another half dozen stitches under my eye. The thing is awesome. Better visibility than a half shield...no line like on the edge of the half shield. It is a little warm but I play in cold rink so not very noticeable. Has never fogged up. The only drawback I found is it blocks your voice when communicating with teammates.
All the anti fog sprays and other special treatments wont help. Only thing that helps with fogging is soap water / shower gel rubbed into the shield. Thats how i ve been doing it in warmer conditions and of course if it gets too warm or some condensation starts building , its still going to fog.
I’ve always used a cage, and hardly notice it anymore. Never tried a fish bowl style because I don’t want to waste the money and end up never using it if I don’t like it.
I hate mine. Vision is great but the increased sweating, fog, and water drips on the inside from the sweat were all too many downsides. Got tired of spending all my time on the bench wiping it.
Really been trying to save up for a fish bowl the cage really messes with my vision I play roller hockey down in Tucson,az so I don’t think fogging would be an issue for me with how dry it is all the time
I am a 14 y/o boy that play hockey at a high level and i think it could help me have a better game vision due to better visibility and I live in Quebec so it is fairly cold for the fog.
Trust me in some arenas in Quebec a fish bowl is unusable, after every shift the whole thing gets fogged up. Lasted 2 games (the vision is not a huge difference)
It would probably help my vision because i dont have the best eyes and a cage Is a no for me, but i have not yet bought a full visor and i would love to get it.
Hey man have you ever tried the Ccm fv1 I see you have a Ccm bucket and based on what I’ve seen Bauer fogs more and the air ventilation is better in fv1 just wanted to let you know. It could help my game because better clarity of the puck and it looks like there is basically nothing so nothing is ruining your vision

fish bowls are just cool
Good review. Thanks
