I've installed many blinds in the past, but still learned some new tricks from your video. The cabinet screws you suggested work great and saved me a lot of frustration, well worth the extra $10 for a box.
On my window I cant get the screws all the way in! It happened on both an inside and an outside mount even when I drilled a hole first. It seems like I am hitting metal or concrete. Edit: I went and bought some new screws (power pro one ext xl #8 1 1/4" as recommended by the guy at lowes-I think similar to ones in video)and it was so easy! I didn't even have to drill holes. I also got the level (good thing I did!). Now my blinds are hung and I'm very happy! Thanks for the advice.
Good video, thanks. Probably the most important parts of this is knowing there should be wood behind the drywall at the bracket mounting height. I you have a laser, you can stripe the wall level and preinstall your brackets without going up and down with the head rail. Also, an 8 foot straightedge with a 4 foot level on top can set you a level line to avoid all the up and down with the head rail. Most sliding glass doors are less than 8 feet wide. If you cant find those installation screws, hex head installation screws are also very effective. And finally, always invest in Fat Max tape measures. Always. All professionals should be carrying them. They are the best for measuring stuff by yourself.
I want to add that replacing the Levolor track with a new Levolor track was a direct switch-out for the actual individual vertical blinds. I was able to use the old actual individual hanging blinds, saving money. I was also wary of the new mechanism to open and close both the length of the hanging blinds, but also the closing of the blinds once they are pulled all the way across the door. The old track has little ropes you pulled to slide the blinds open and closed and a wand to twist the blinds closed for privacy. The new mechanism only uses a wand to do everything. I was concerned that would be the weak link, but 6 months later we actually like using the wand to drag the blinds right and left. It's so much easier. But we are also careful not to put weird angles of pressure on the wand which may weaken the connection point.
Great instruction video. I also want to do an outside mount, because I just installed a new patio door, and I really do not want to drill holes in the nice new wood.
Hey Rick, yeah makes things much easier not having to hit studs to get a secure hold. Those SPAX screws are way easier to work with on this and many other projects. Best of luck on your projects!
Where can I find the spax screws, because home depot doesn't have them. Suggestion for substitute or where else to find the screws, because I can't use the screws that come with it, and I can' t finish my project
Hey Scott, I’ll build a house from ground up, but I avoid these ‘things’ at all costs! 😳🤔🙄 Seriously, some good points and demonstrations and information. 👍👍👍😁✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻🇺🇸
Hey George, thanks! Interested if you had a project with a sliding glass door is there any other product you would use to adjust light / provide privacy? Vertical blinds aren’t my favorite either but I currently I don’t have a good alternative.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs Scott, only other thing I could think of would be full length curtains, which would open up with a side pull, or some may still open up from both sides? They offer full privacy and light control, but not as easy to clean, nor as sleek as the vertical ones you used here. 🤔🤷🏻♂️🙄 I haven’t had sliding glass doors for years, so not much help to you? ✌🏻👍
Hmmm, I would think there is a "header" over a large opening giving you something to drill into without the need for anchors. If you do need anchors these are my Go To amzn.to/3dkqUm7
My back porch (inside)blinds project is; 72 inches from side to side of the slide glass door frame edges, & 78 inches long, do I add a couple inches to the sides and 3 inches to the top in order to hang these blinds? Thank you for your input..!
I'm wondering if a Home Decorator Collection vertical blind head rail can be installed inside mount... and if it can be installed to the inside side wall rather than above, since it is covering only 1/2 the window space (nothin above to mount to).. and finally if that can be done on a window 60 inches wide. Thanks.
Great guidance. I am planning to install a 104" L blinds on sliding doors but realize I have an issue. I can't do in or outside mount since sliding door is 96" from floor to ceiling. I do not have that stud room for the installation of the brackets. I assume I have to do ceiling install which is kind of unique. Correct me if I am wrong but I'm thinking I would just need to screw the mounting clip to the ceiling, or should I just use the whole thing? Bracket and clip but the upper part to the ceiling. Thanks for assistance with this.
When you get started with and you cut the rail to where you want it. How do you know how many pieces of the blind go up. We did this once and there was to many pieces of blinds and they over lapped on one end. Is there a way to figure this out?
How far above the molding do you go? I am doing the same job and I am trying to figure out what I need to measure. The high of my sliding doors is about 80 inches and about 82 if I include the molding.
I just measured from the floor ensuring I had 1/2" clearance so the slats wouldn't drag on the floor when opening the blinds. So it is less about the molding and more about the distance from floor. Best of luck on the project.
I just had a fella install 2" faux wood blinds. They stick out of the trim about an inch on the front. Does this mean he didn't put they back far enough?
I’m re-installing vertical blinds with a new mount….my old vertical blinds are 82 3/8 “ in length….what height should I install the brackets and how much space will I have between the floor and blinds? Thank you!
Helpful but please people, do not be cheap and come up short on the length of your outside mount. That gap at the end is not only aesthetically atrocious, it defeats the purpose of the blind. Especially if it was a blackout…ish.
Hi I need to install roller blinds into a recess which has a sliding door in the middle what I have encountered in the process is the sliding door has a bar sticking out which will damage the blind while sliding so what are my options to get this done
Great info and instructions! Question: If my window don't have enough depth/indent, 1.5 " only, will I still be able to install 2" inside mount blind? Thanks!
Thanks for the clear instructions. I have vertical blinds on the sliding door in the home I'm renting. It's an outside mount. I'm wanting to replace them and I'm wondering if I can use the existing hardware that the old ones are mounted with on the new ones. Are mounts universal or does each brand use different mounts?
When you get your blinds home, check the brackets inside the box against the ones you already have on the wall. You should be able to determine if you can use the old ones pretty easily. Most of them have a slot to adjust the blinds closer or further away form the wall/trim and a separate piece that clips on the blind's head rail that is what moves in or out making that adjustment. You may be able to use the old brackets on the wall with the new parts that clip on the head rail.
Those bñinds do not properly fit that window. 1. The blind should completly cover the window. 2. The blind should extend beyond the window so that when you open it the full window is visible. In other words the open blind does not block part of tne window. That blind is a good 2 feet too narrow. If you are being cheap you should have installed 2 units that open to the opposite sides of the window. The right way to do it would have been to order a custom split opening rail that propely fit.
Hey John, thanks for the feedback. I tried to make that clear by mentioning it several times in the video that these blinds were about 6 inches too short. In an ideal scenario I prefer only 2 inch overlap for each side on vertical blinds but appreciate your thoughts.
You might check your spelling John, as it doesn’t properly fit your comment. 🤔 Scott explained and showed his personal choice of why he went with the size he did. Peace 🤔🙄😳😄😅😂✌🏻🤣

I don’t understand why you didn’t go all the way to the end!
Because it is cheaper at cost. NOT BY MUCH. So in other words he's to tight to pay a little extra to have a much nicer finish.
What size I will buy in Home Depot 72’’x 84 inch is OK for wide sling door
After the blinds are installed, do they slide easily so you can open the sliding door?
Yeah, The quality of the blinds weren't great but they served the purpose and could easily be slid to the side.

Where do you get the verticals blinds..Home Depot?
Would the spax #8 1 1/14 screws work? Or the #8 2? The size you recommend is out of stock everywhere i looked
Mine hit the window trim when i try t turn them idk whats the problem too big ? I got 3.5
Can you buy just the header materials? I would prefer to use curtains since I have kids and don't want them to destroy the blinds.

Does the header go wall to wall?
No, the header is only over the door. Do an image search for "exterior door header framing" to see what they look like.
OMG your eyes ❤ !!!
You completely skipped the one part that i needed help with from putting mounts up then putting the frame in and attaching it
How do you stop the end blind? How do you install the stopper?
When you sized for inside mount you didn't compensate for the device. The part that holds the slats. 1.5-2 inches
