Thank you for making this video, I have the same exact motor and now am doing my first service as it is now broken in. This is so helpful! One thing on mine, I added a stainless steel slip over the original skeg. I makes a big difference for me as I go through some tough creeks and ditches. Great job with that video! Greetings from Australia! Thanks very much for this video, I have just bought a Tohatsu 50 and wanted to know how to service it. great tips about buying the spare parts; really appreciate your effort to getting this out there!
Thank you for an awesome video. Got the same motor coming in the spring with my first boat, so just doing some early research. Appreciate that you got this out there. :)
Excellent vid!!.....Lookin' for a 17' jon boat used (new prices these days too high.... I can afford new, but don't want to be dinged for all the add-on fees)...Had a 60hp Merc on my Mako 18 several years ago not happy with paying nearly $500/yr or 100 hrs for warranty required servicing ...Excellent motor, but pricey (have owned two power cats with 200hp and 150hp eTechs that were great and only serviced at 300 hrs or 3 yrs....sad they went out of business, I guess newer outboards had problems or something).... If I can get a good deal on decent condition jon boat, will replace outboard with new Tohatsu 40 or 50 4stroke.....Easier access to powerhead, etc.....
Gran video , hay poca información así en internet. Una pregunta sabrías como resetear la luz de aceite de mantenimiento me parpadea cada 9s y nose resetearlo.
My tohatsu dealer told me You don’t change that fuel filter, you just dump it out spray lil starting fluid or break cleaner in it and wash it out and put it bck on.
Great video. I have same it. But it dont have crome propeller. If you installed propeller later can you give information about the model number and brand
If you think you may have lost a little too much lower end oil while putting the bottom screw back in could you take the top screw out and just add a little bit that way?
@@TripleRwoods Also, I noticed on Tohatsu's parts list that the gaskets there are listed under the number 332-60006-0 instead of 332-60006-1 like you had in the video. Any idea why? Would 332-60006-0 work just as well?
I just bought my 50 on the 9th of this month dealer told me I did not have to do foot oil until around the 50 hour mark is that around the time you doing it
Hi mate , did you experience any trouble with bad valve timing ? Here in Greece we had two engines that broke a piston bc of that . One with 20hrs and the other with 200 . Tia.
Also are all of the gaskets you replaced the same? If so I will go ahead and order the same 4 that need to be replaced after my break in period. Maybe I should ask if they are all 4 the same part number? Sorry I’m scatter brained at the moment
You talking about the washers that go under the drain plug? I think 2 were smaller on the lower unit and the main oil was larger. Don’t know the exact part # off the top of my head.
Okay thank you. We have a tohatsu service place down here by me. I’m in NW Louisiana so I’ll show them your video and I’ll get the gaskets from them if they keep them in stock. If not I’ll order them through them
my 100.hr light just went out eventually by itself... i think you can reset it by some form of removing the kill cord then pulling out the kill button numerous time while ignition on ....something like that. google it.
I am currently running a 15p vengance prop. I think I need a 16p. At some point this summer I'm going to switch to a 16p. I'm running around 38 mph right now, I feel I should be running 40 mph.
Just depends on how fast you wanna go. If your just idling around you can trim up and be in less than a foot of water.... but it’s slow at that. In 2+ ft of water you can jump on plane and go as fast as you want.
When you said to make sure you look for steel shavings at what part of the engine do we need to be checking for that? Also I saw in other comments you only did a 10 hour break in. I was told 12-15 hours on break in. I have the same 4 stroke 50 HP motor as you do but my boat is a havoc and not an edge. Maybe the break in is a minimum of 10 hours. I’m not sure
I would imagine the break in is flexible. Most people don’t do it as soon as it rolls over 10 hours. When you change the power unit if there are metal shavings on the plug then the gears may be grinding and wearing. The lowest plug would probably be the one to inspect the most.
@@TripleRwoods Nice boat. I see the Arkansas license plates. Where in Arkansas can I find a boat like yours? I’m looking for one in that size range. 15-16 foot in length. Thanks
Give me a time stamp so I make sure I know what part your talking about. I went to my local marine store and told them I was changing my oil and they put a kit together. I think it’s a crush washer if it is what I think your talking about.
Useful video but your video taping skills were God awful! Camera almost always moving and many times not even aimed at what your were doing with your hands.
That was rude! This guy is doing a volunteer episode on how to maintain a motor. If you need to be this critical get off here and go buy the manual and have your struggles…. You deserve it!

Great job. First start after oil change manual says to disconnect the stop switch and crank the motor 10 times to disburse the oil, then fire it up.
Very helpful. Now I don’t have to get price gouged to get a service. Thanks!
Great video! Appreciate you putting it out there for us! Struggling to find the Oil Drain Plug Washer but the part numbers were great for the rest!
Call southern mud sports in Auburn Al they will ship them to you

Really appreciate this video. Just about to do this on my exact same motor. Good job, and thanks again! Greetings from Norway.
I always had a hard time removing the oil filter so I ordered a filter wrench through East Marine. Works great! No slippage.
Do you have a parts list for the 3 washers used, the oil filter, gear case oil, universal pump etc ? Awesome video. thank you !

You won’t regret the Tohatsu
Epic!! thanks for this vid, you rule :)
If you trim up with your transom saver on it will lock the kick/jack in place and you won’t have to use the strap
Was looking for this video. Thank you.

Thx TO... where did you get the washer from.... hope you make more videos on the tohatsu ...
When I picked up my fluids I told them I needed the washers and they had them. On one of my older Tahotsu 40 I just reused the washers.
Thank you for this information 😎
Great video. I have same it. But it dont have crome propeller. If you installed propeller later can you give information about the model number and brand
It is a vengeance steel 15 pitch prop. They come with an aluminum prop most of the time And you have to buy an aftermarket steel prop.
Great video !!!!
Much appreciated
If you think you may have lost a little too much lower end oil while putting the bottom screw back in could you take the top screw out and just add a little bit that way?
Yea you could. Just make sure not to add too much. But it should drain back out of that top hole and be perfect. So I think that would be a good idea.
Okay thanks for the help
Can you give me a review of what you think of the motor, 2 years of ownership? Thanks
Best bang for your buck! Great motor. Highly recommend. Tons of power and quiet.
Have you done a video of the impeller change at all?
Hello, thanks for the great video! Mind sharing links to where you found the parts and oil?
I picked the items up locally. I think you can probably order it on Amazon.
@@TripleRwoods Ah ok. Was it a big box store? Was trying to see is West Marine or Bass Pro had these items.

do you not pour some fresh oil in the oil filter before putting it back on the engine? I find doing this helps in my Tohatsu
I just bought my 50 on the 9th of this month dealer told me I did not have to do foot oil until around the 50 hour mark is that around the time you doing it
That’s about right. Not sure exactly
I think I can come with everything but that adapter for the lower unit. Do you know how to find that or could you put oil in from the top?
Hi mate , did you experience any trouble with bad valve timing ? Here in Greece we had two engines that broke a piston bc of that . One with 20hrs and the other with 200 . Tia.
No I’ve never seen that happen and this is the most popular motor in the duck woods

I couldn't see the gear oil good can you give the name thx
Yamalube 80w-90
Hi Ave just bought the same engine. Was this service after the 10 hour break in?
Yes. This was the 10 hour service.
Where did you get your kick plate?
Came with the boat. You can get them at local marine shops.
hi, tell me, is tohatsu outboards 4T oil good?
How do you reset the oil light on the tiller handle?
Man I’m not sure on that one. I’ve owned 2 of these motors and I don’t think I’ve ever noticed the oil light coming on. 🤷🏼♂️
It flashes every 15 seconds or so while it’s running so ya know when to change it just wasn’t sure how to reset it
Need a video on the 100 hour oil light reset
my 100.hr light just went out eventually by itself... i think you can reset it by some form of removing the kill cord then pulling out the kill button numerous time while ignition on ....something like that. google it.
Could you post a link to all the parts? Also, what prop are you running?
I purchased all of my parts at a local marine shop, but I'll try to find the parts on amazon to link below the video.

That’d be great.
I have the 40hp. It’s a good motor!
Thanks for the prop info!
What brand jackplate Is that?
Watch out for wrench size, it is in metric not in imperial units.
How shallow can you run with that setup? Thanks

Lower*** not power
Thank you. I’ll be doing my post break in oil change this week
Whats the top speed with that 50?
Lots of variables. On this 1656 I hit about 40 or 41. The bottom of my boat is pretty beat up so that doesn’t help.
@@TripleRwoods good to know..thats still plenty fast.
What size boat do you have? Jackplate set up?
1656 boat. Can’t remember the exact Jack plate but it’s just the basic one
