friend of mine has a Mercury 4-Stroke and hasn't changed the oil since he had it. i'll send this video to him now to throw hints. thanks for the video.
I have had my 40 hp for 5 years and never remembered to change the engine oil. I just bought 3 quarts of oil and a filter for $90 so have it planned out for tomorrow. I also had to buy the 18mm socket for the big plug.
I really appreciate this. Have the same motor. Yes! Will save me some $$ - thank you I thought it would be really complicated, as they charge way more than a car oil change.
Good video. I just got a boat with a Mercury 50hp of about the same era as yours and changed the oil yesterday (which had clearly been neglected). I wish Merc would have left more clearance for removing the filter. Even a couple mil would help. I have the spring action adjustable filter wrench which didn't really fit in that space.
Not sure if this was mentioned in the comments. You could install the oil drain plug and also install the oil filter while the engine is tilted up and turned away so that there would be no oil leaking at all.
Thank you for the video. Our 60hp has 31 hours on it so we are changing the break in oil today. I think we are also going to change the lower unit oil also.
Hi there I'm new to the channel so I know this comments a little late after the fact but I just wondered if I could add one thing is that when you change your oil filter make sure you check to see if the old rubber gasket from the filter is stuck to the engine sometimes people get in a hurry and don't notice that the gasket has come loose from the filter and stuck to the engine and if you leave it there and install the new filter you will have a oil leak and you should never really need to tighten it more than hand tight cuz after a heat cycle or two it will tighten up significantly on its own thats why they're so hard to remove if you snug them down with a filter wrench when putting them on
I should do this. I’ve never changed our oil because hubby always does but I need to learn. Seems simple enough. 👍🏼 You should help that kiddo in the Mercedes change his oil Mark!! 😂
Im sorry but that boat is gone. I have a new boat I will be doing videos for soon... Good luck it's not that difficult. I suggest you get a manual from merc. They are worth the money! Thanks for watching!
thanks for the great video ... just got a boat with the same motor on it and i am pleased to see how easy a oill change will be .. my motor is new and i am wondering about oil consumption during break in prior to 20 hours... any tips let me know.. i must take the time to compliment you on your video picture quality .. it is excellent !!! thank you .. ttfn
And as Mark mentioned synthetic oil is great oil but make sure you are through with your break in period Before using synthetic oils cuz the synthetic oils is so good that it won't allow the piston rings to set in but after your break in period you are good to go to use synthetic oil or whatever you prefer
thank you ... i closely monitor the oil consumption...at first i was concerned as after following the break in procedure i was adding about 1/2 cup of oil after a 4 hour session following the mercury break in guidelines.. i am not sure about the total hours on the motor i guess by now 25-30 .. it has totally stopped using oil... i intend to leave the non-synthetic oil in for a about 50 hours...at that point i think i will do the first oil change and use non-synthetic mercury oil for another 50 hours.. thanks again
Yeah I'm not sure what the exact break in hours are on the new Mercury but it being new I'm sure you have the manual after your break-in hours with the non-synthetic oil and your rings get seated you can definitely put in the synthetic oil when you change it and also I had mentioned in another comment on here when changing your oil filter be sure that the rubber gasket did not come loose from the filter and stick to the engine if it does and you install the new oil filter on top of it you will have an oil leak sometimes people just get in a little bit of a hurry and don't realize that the rubber gasket has come loose from the filter and stuck to the engine
Now...all I need is another boat to put this info to use...hahaha. like the boat thought bud, I really miss my bass tracker 😥. At what degree do you tilt the motor? So you don't take the filter off as you're draining to assure all the old oil comes out, like a vehicle?
I tilt the motor to drain and add oil and that's about it. As you saw as long as you vent the oil reservoir by taking off the fill cap or pulling the dip stick it drains completely. You might get a drop or two that come out of the filter seal. I love that little boat so much I call it "The Game Changer"
Yes I do install a new impeller every few years. Come to think of it I need to do it next spring! There are tons of video on how to do it out there. I will have to make one in the spring when I do.
Mercury/Quicksilver 10w30 is better for a wider temp range, the 25w40 is 40 degree F and above..the 10w30 better if you fish year round and in cold weather
Boat shop quoted me 900$ for a oil change lamo I work on my older 2 stroke myself and all my cars /trucks so I said fuck that I’ll just do it myself and I checked this video see if there’s any specific or special tools
No special tools besides a filter wrench. I am not even going to ask what they want for my new 200 Merc. I'm about to make another video for that this week. Thanks for watching!
@@CatfishandCrappie I changed mine yesterday after watching your vid, was a big help. For future reference if you drape a paper towel over the filter then drive the filter wrench on it will grip enough to loosen or at least mine did. 👍

Yea it's simple as heck! No reason not to do it! Happy Fishing!

It actually took me longer to watch your video than to actually change the oil.
Glad it helped!
Nice tutorial for us who haven't changed oil on a boat. Now I have a reference video that is simple and straight to the point.
Thanks for the kind words Sean! Hope things are well your way!
Things are well up here, still trying to break free of winter, but all next week looks good for fishing.
Thanks for taking the time to show how it´s done. Greetings from Norway!!
My pleasure! Best Wishes!
Nice walk through of oil service Mark..... Looked quick & easy.....ready for more trips..... Nice edit....
Thanks My Friend! See you on your live this week...
Looking at outboard videos and your video came up, definitely need to get me a 4 stroke
You will love it! I just upgraded to a 200 Merc boat and that size motor still gets great fuel economy!
I really appreciate this. Have the same motor. Yes! Will save me some $$ - thank you
I thought it would be really complicated, as they charge way more than a car oil change.
Any time!

I have the exact same outboard motor and you just taught me on how to change the oil thanks man👍🏽👍🏽
I live for comments like yours! Thanks for watching and Best Wishes!!
thanks dude.. love from finland
Glad you enjoyed it!
Place a paper towel or rag across the oil filter socket face and push it on filter to make wrench fit tight. Works great.
Thant an awesome tip!! Thank You!

You can do it! It's easy as heck! I will be doing a lower unit service in the next two week!
How do tell the hours on the motor, thanks
Thanks Mark good information thanks for sharing be safe
Thank You sir! Same to you!
Well done. Thanks for the information.
Glad it was helpful!
Tech tip of the week!
Thanks For Watching! Happy Fishing bud!!
Nicely done big guy!
Big thanks Lyle!
Thanks just did it. Manual also calls for the side suction filter to be changed. How about a video of that? Thanks for your help
Great suggestion! I will try and get that done at the next oil change!

Or you can come here next spring and practice on my boat while watch and I drink beer! G-Wagon Kid!!!
Very nicely done. I'm about to do mine soon too. Appreciate the reminders on things.
Get it Done Chad!!! Thanks for watching!
A strap wrench would make quick work of that filter. Thanks for the video.
Yea tried that. Not enough room for the one I have at least..
any chance you can do a video on how to change the spark plugs? I have a 40hp mercury bigfoot efi

Good Video Mark! ;).

Good video. You don’t pre fill the new filter?
No I do not...
I bet this one will help a lot of people!
I think it just may do that ;) Thanks For stopping by!

Thanks for the Kind words! Just check the oil often (before each trip) during the break in and add what the manual says to. Don't overthink things ;)

does the motor need to be warm for the change?
It does not BUT cold weather may effect the viscosity (rate at which it flows) of the oil when draining and filling.
Nice video, do you change your water pump? If so i have a question,
Yes I do install a new impeller every few years. Come to think of it I need to do it next spring! There are tons of video on how to do it out there. I will have to make one in the spring when I do.
Kirkland signature paper towels?
Not sure where my wife got em LOL Could be! Happy Boating!
Oil kit came with tiny gasket. Is that optional?
I have a Merc 60hp 4 stroke CT
I have not used one even years ago on my bridgeport I didn't use one.
Mine did not come with a gasket.

What is PN of oil filter
I used OEM 35-822626K04 Double check your part numbers with the manufacture...

I have the worst luck with those oil filter remove caps.
Yea they are not the best that fort sure!
👍
Thanks for Stopping by Bud!
We’ll, now I feel like an idiot. I changed my oil today but filled it with new oil using the dipstick hole
It's all good now you know! At Least you got it done yourself!
get a small table for your drip pan brotha. cover it with a old towel...
Great tip man!
What’s the filter part number
Here is the one I use for my boat. amzn.to/3RR0KW0 Check your service manual...
That oil filter is WAY WAY too tight. Hand tight is all they need and you’ll still have trouble taking them off.
Thanks for the tip!
@@dougb27 the oil filter on mine was very very tight oil filter wrench actually slipped I had a hell of a time getting it on
Too many wasted paper towels and somebody put that filter on way too tight. Nice video.
