Queerbaiting: What It Is & What It Is NOT

  • "Queerbaiting" has become an increasingly popular term lately amongst us queer folk of the internet. But are we using it appropriately? Why do we moniter those in the public eye for queerbaiting at the slightest indication of potential queerness (as if we could ever tell without confirmation from the person themself)? Kit Connor, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, and Harry Styles have all been accused of queerbaiting; but why? What is the frustration that we feel towards queer LGBTQIA+ representation in media? What should we consider when consuming media and public figures' work?

Such a tricky topic, thanks for your nuanced and empethetic take!
I agree, what happened to Kit was gross - didn't similar, but to a much lesser degree, happen to Taika Watiti as well? He didnt want to comment on his sexuality, and since hes written lots of queer characters a lot of people have been accusing him of appropriating and stuff, really unfortunate - these people shouldnt feel owed that information in order to allow him to express himself in a way he feels safe
What you were mentioning in the relationship anarchist part makes me scared as a writer too ngl, I totally agree all those things are not inherently romantic or sexual, and am writing a book rn with an ace protagonist
It's basically all about my protagonist's recovery from childhood personal trauma, building confidence from emotional ruins and finding her identity (in terms of coming to accept her emotions and interests and passions and herself as she is, including being ND and ace) and it's also about celebrating the beauty of friendship (very undervalued and forgotten in our romance and sex obsessed society, I feel)
It has a huge focus on her and her friend to convery all this, but since they're very emotionally close and both women, it worries me because I'm like... if most people do see things like hugging and co-habiting as inherently romantic and etc, will it come across as baiting sapphic women and/or make the theme of challenging amatonormativity? I don't know haha, something I'll have to be very careful of
(Don't feel pressured to help btw I'm mainly rambling and hoping it'll serve as a bit of an example of how grey the topic can get)!

Thank you for this insightful video, Elle. I totally agree with what you're saying here. Thoughtful young folks like yourself feed my hope for the future of humanity. Oh, and even though I'm not the target demographic, I started watching Heartstopper. So far, it looks like good representation!

From what I understand queer baiting is like, promising gay romance but bailing on it in story and just implying it. Or, corporations trying to keep their rep subtle enough that only queer people will notice it. Bury your gays tropes and that kind of stuff.
In fact I don't know how an actor could queer bait? It's not like they write their own lines or stage directions/animation. I don't think we want only queer people to play queer characters anyways. Like, have someone who actually understands queer people write or advise yes, that should be true for anything you write about (for big teams).
However, complaining about cishet (or presumed cishet) actors playing queer characters. Well, it feels like all the people who blamed the actor for Dr. Jackel and Mr. Hide for Jack the ripper's killings. The person you play on stage doesn't HAVE to be anything like you, half the fun of acting (imo) is getting to be someone else.

it's the same issue as having a non-poc character playing a poc role, it's inauthentic and takes opportunities from the minority to give it to someone else. In Ancient Greek performances for example, no women or slaves were allowed to play a role because men were deemed better at portraying abstract concepts because they were smarter. It just feels offensive to disallow the opportunity for diversity because you like some hot white cishet actor instead.

4:06 If only queer actors should play queer characters, should only heterosexual actors play heterosexual characters since they do not belong to the heterosexual community and will never understand the experience?

    • @SpaceyAces

While I suppose you could argue that, I wouldn’t necessarily agree. Queerness is something that has been suppressed and demonized and under attack across history. Straightness has not. I feel neutrally towards queer people playing heterosexual characters because heterosexual people have had disproportionate opportunity to represent themselves, and nobody in particular can “misrepresent” straight people because they are the assumed default. The reason I think it can in some cases be unfair to cast straight people in queer roles is because queer people themselves have historically and continue to not have the opportunity to represent themselves, and I believe that it can be ethically muddy to profit from a “queer storyline” when no queer people are being paid to help tell it. But again, it’s not so clear-cut that we can claim an objective right and wrong. 💜

@@SpaceyAces I think a possibly reasonable middle-ground might be that if a queer character’s orientation is relevant to the story then a queer actor should have priority. If their orientation is sort of irrelevant to the story, then any actor is probably acceptable.

    • @JRTO_

There are plenty of cishet actors playing cishet characters throughout history, this is about taking opportunities from people who know what that experience is like and how they've struggled, and passing on the role to someone else because you like them better. Think about black roles being played by another race and why that could be considered inappropriate, while giving previously ambiguously-raced characters any ethnicity is fine. One role requires you to have a certain background to fill it correctly and authentically, one role doesn't because everyone has basic background knowledge when there isn't any nuance to the background of the character in terms of sexuality or race or whatever.

Um.... Ok, so.... I have a rather strange question. I just watched the ace spectrum video from a year ago, but figured I'd get this question seen easier by commenting it on the most recent video on this channel, which is currently this one. So, my question is this:
I'm unsure of my sexuality, cuz I've never been in that situation yet, despite me being 23. I just know i find the lower parts of both men and women rather gross and/or off-putting, and find irl *corn* off-putting as well. However i find animated stuff, or stuff where the people involved are at least partially clothed over the lower bits arousing. What would that make my sexuality? Genuine question, because i suspect i might be somewhere on the ace spectrum cuz of my aversion to certain parts?
Note, this is me copy/pasting the question i asked in the last video. Sorry if it's annoying, I'm just genuinely unsure and trying to figure it out.

Hi! I don’t know if I have all the answers but as someone on this journey myself here’s my take - you can be ace and be into sex (there are sex positive aces for example) and lots of aces are into sex in a fictional way (maybe look into aegosexuality). There’s also a community of kinky aces!
Being ace is really about whether or not you feel sexual attraction and it’s a spectrum - some aces never feel attraction and some do only very occasionally.
What helped me the most was watching videos and reading books about people’s own experience being ace. Some books are Loveless by Alice Oseman (who wrote Heartstopper too!) and How to be Ace by Rebecca Burgess.
And the last thing I’ll say is if the label feels right - use it! If that changes
in the future then that’s ok. 💜
      Hope this helps!

@@Spidercandy957 this does actually make sense. Thank you for your insight, i appreciate it greatly. Hopefully i can find what i am. Hell, i probably won't find my exact sexuality until i get into that situation, but at least this helps me make a guess as to what it could be. Thx again.

Oh I feel exactly the same way! Personally I identify as ace and homosensual, which means I don't feel sexual attractive but I do feel sensual attraction. Sensual attraction could refer to wanting to kiss, cuddle, or do other more suggestive things without actually having sex, perhaps this could describe your experience too :)

    • @robbiesmith8055
      @robbiesmith8055 Год назад +10

Feeling arousal doesn't rule out asexuality - asexuality is more about if that arousal is actually directed anywhere if that makes sense. So when animations/partially clothed folks get you aroused, does that make you feel like you personally want to engage in sexual behaviour? Or is the idea of sexual behaviour what excites you, even if you're not big on genitalia.
Your comment reminded me a lot of myself, so if you're feeling unsure it might be worthwhile to check out aegosexuality. It describes people on the ace spectrum who aren't sexually attracted to other people/uninterested in sex personally, but can gain enjoyment/arousal from sexual fantasy and/or depictions of sexual behaviour in media. In addition if they have sexual fantasies, they're more likely to fantasise about other people/in third person rather than being a participant in their fantasies.
I hope this was helpful, and I hope you manage to figure all this out some day :)
