Simon vs the Homo sapiens agenda is one of my favourite books and I was frustrated by the movie because it took away so much of Simon’s personality. I also hated how much they changed Leah’s character.
I definitely agree with what you’re saying about cis white males who are gay being the main characters in queer movies, and I would love to see more diverse character who are perhaps female/gender diverse and not gay or not only gay (meaning aro, ace or trans) ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
i like this kind of video very much! I'd be happy to see more of your thoughts abt queer represantation. Also: what ia really interesting to me is that I remember almost nothing of the movie besides me finding the characters bland and boring. On the other hand I remember scenes from the book vividly and me liking the depiction of Simon's relationships with others and himself... I don't see why they always have to change or cut so many of important details that actually define the characters' authenticity and depth :/
I feel like this movie was very… safe? I’m not sure if that’s the correct word. I watched the movie with my parents who deemed it a “good movie” however I think they would’ve said that the book, in comparison, is too “inappropriate.” This movie was definitely made for straight audiences while the book was made for queer audiences.
Good thoughts! I read Simon VS for the first time fairly recently after years of hearing about it online, and I did enjoy it. However, I think I missed the time when it would’ve made any kind of major impact on me, it just didn’t hit home for a long laundry list of reasons 🙃 all that is to say, I enjoyed hearing your perspective on it, it was quite illuminating! So yeah, thanks very much \:) Have a good day, sending good space ace vibes ✨💜
This was a great video and makes me look forward to finishing the book (for the first time), I think I mostly get what you’re saying about the movie and I’ve heard of quite a few cis-het people say they enjoyed the movie too, which isn’t to say that they aren’t aloud to, it’s just rare for a queer movie to be so well known by the cis-het community (in my experience).
I’ve only just started reading the book version tonight so maybe it’s a bad idea to watch this right now but the book version is soooo different to the movie (which I’ve seen so many times) so I’m interested to see what u say in this review 💜💜💜
Thanks for putting words to this! I also read Simon Vs in my babygay phase (14-15 iirc), and i was thrilled when the movie came out (this was back when any gay content was a HUGE deal & therefore extremely important and "good" to me). ut as time has gone on, i realise the movie seemed quite soulless in comparison, and i truly don't feel it was made with people like me (trans, genderless, aroace, dyke-adjacent) in mind. I think it was just made for capitalist reasons, not to create a valuable & accurate retelling of the book - to "make a statement" and gain all the 2015 progressive points, while maximising its appeal to straight audiences & not demanding any self-reflection from them/reinforcing existing homophobic ideas (e.g. Simon "not being like OTHER gays", and never really being checked on it or realising his mistakes). Nowadays the book is remembered FAR more fondly than the movie, for me, bc i at least felt genuinely seen & understood by it, even if Simon WERE of a more privileged experience than me :^)
Thank you for this comment!! I agree, and your point on Simon being “not like the other gays” is so true of the movie, and I think I could have spoken on that more in this video because it rubbed me the wrong way for sure (e.g. the rainbow flash mob scene where he says “maybe not THAT gay,” and the general portrayal of Simon as “normal” and other queer people as outcast and weird). ❤️❤️❤️
@@SpaceyAces especially the pretty much outright judgement Simon casts upon the one openly queer kid in his year, for being feminine & predominant hanging out with girls . THAT feels like straight-person pandering :/
Can we just agree that books are always better than their movie adaptations? I feel like movie adaptations always lose a lot of meaning from the original book. Completely unrelated but this is the first video that's come out since I discovered this channel and I just need to say that this channel has helped me so much in questioning my sexuality and I really appreciate you, Kaden, and Lau for sharing your authentic experiences. 🖤🩶🤍💜
YAY A NEW VIDEO!! I've been considering reading the book. I love how deeply you dive into stuff like this. 💜🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
Thanks so much! 💚

What are your thoughts on SvtHSA and Love, Simon? ❤

I have yet to read or watch either Love Simon or Simon vs the Homosapien Agenda but the book is definitely on my to read list!
Yes, I would recommend (if that wasn’t obvious from the video, haha)! ❤️
Very interesting video!
i've been really enjoying your videos

I love your hair!! And the new setup for filming is very pretty and nice 💛
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback. 💕

Much appreciated! 🌈

Yes, for sure on books vs movie adaptations. Also, I’m glad our content has been meaningful to you. 💜💜💜
