I adored this book and movie so much! It was so refreshing to finally see a teen movie entirely focused on an LGBT romance, and not simply as a side story, which is common in this genre!😊💟🌈
ULGROTHA Yes, I agree, those groups definitely need more representation. I read a young adult novel recently called "If I was your Girl" by Meredith Russo, who herself is Male to Female Transgender. It took great care to show how Amanda, the protagonist, was defined more as a person, and not as a girl or boy. I'd like to see a film adaptation of that story.
I think the biggest change I didn't like was how meeting Blue was on the ferris wheel, with a lot of people watching them. In the book, they meet in the Tilt A Whirl, which is much more private, and they don't kiss immediately, which gives it a more genuine feeling. Also, the book gives more insight into Bram, revealing that he already had a crush on Simon and dragged Garrett with him to Simon's play all 3 times just to see his crush perform.
exactly the in the movie where they meet on the Farris wheel is so public but in the book the carnival is closing much more private and i do think that is more realistic
SLAGATHOR Apparently, the whole "exhale" conversation Simon has with his mother was actress Jennifer Garner's idea. You're right, it was definitely one of the most heartwarming scenes in the movie.❤️
The "you get to exhale" conversation and talk with the Dad in the driveway eye both great additions/changes to the movie. Both had me full on crying in the comments both times I have seen it. The movie definitely had more feels to it.
I loved those conversations but they would feel out of place in the book because the book isn’t as dark as the movie, when he is outed in the book it’s shit but his whole life doesn’t fall apart like in the movie so those conversations were probably a little too strong for the book
The book and movie are like siblings. Both great and amazing in their own rights, both great and amazing when together. Just great and amazing overall really.
Simon calling football practice "tryouts" and Bram smiling at him for it The guy from the bar's "go be seventeen, cute Simon" Cal telling Simon he's bi
greg berlanti actually did film the gay bar scene but decided to cut it out sadly. theres a little clip of the BTS on instagram @bbynickr if you want to see.
There’s an article that explains why they took out the bar scene while interviewing the writers. I guess he was drunk and all at the Halloween party so that kinda made up for it Those are all good changes that could have been in the video. I’m guessing the band thing was cut for time but the play change...not sure, probably something only the writers would know
I think the biggest difference was the big blow up. Like Abby and Nick did not ditch him after he was outed instead they stuck by him and took him to a gay bar. Although I loved the book and the movie it was the one change I wasn't happy about. Just because they were better friends to Simon in the book then in the movie.
The movie took things further in terms of Simon interfering to try to help Martin get Abby (in order to set up the fallout between Simon and his friends), which I think was a mistake. Simon giving Martin tips on how to dress, talk or act was one thing, but for him to outright lie to Nick that Abby has a college student boyfriend, and then to tell Leah to date Nick in order to keep him away from Abby, was manipulative and mean.
Yea and I can understand Abby and nick being mad but why was Leah mad, Simon tried to hook her a nick up genuinely and she was all like u set me up to get my heart broken like WHAT!?!?!?!😂
Something that I missed in the movie was in the ending of the book. When Simon and Bram had been dating for a while then they go to the talent show and see Leah and Nora in an all girls band!
They should’ve added his older sister in the movie, I really wanted that cute scene of bram and Simon and I really really wanted to hear him say “why would I want to watch other people kissing when I could be kissing you” ahhdjdjd that should have been in the movie. There’s a lot of scenes/lines I wanted in the movie but I understand why they couldn’t because they have like a time limit and all
Canal do Simon I still like the movie as it’s own but I feel as though it strayed way to much from the book Tbh I would probably rather them say it was inspired by the book and not exactly from it because the 2 were vary different imo
Also Leah’s family. In the book her dad left her and her mom. In the movie Abby’s dad left and she doesn’t have a brother. Also cal is way more important in the book and is revealed as bisexual and shows interest in Simon.
When I was reading the book, I started to really hope Blue was Cal because I thought Cal sounded so cute and dreamy. He was exactly the kind of guy I would have a crush on, too. I was then a little disappointed when Simon asks Blue (in so many words) if he's Cal and Blue says no. But in the movie, Cal has such a small role that I doubt I would've cared if I saw the movie first and didn't know who Blue was going to be. I guess they didn't have a lot of time to spend on Cal because they added a third potential love interest, Lyle (the waffle house waiter).
Slingblade87 yeah, which is a bummer, because I was really interested in Cal's character and apparent bisexuality. The movie hinted towards it but meh. Plus Miles Is a well-known actor, seems like a waste of a role for him.
I thought it was odd that she only kissed him on the head at the end of the scene, though. It was such an emotional moment, it seemed like a hug would be appropriate, similar to the scene with Simon and his dad.
I actually think the most important change is Blue's personality. In the book he is a cute, shy guy where in the movie he organises a party and is very present. Either one worked in my opinion, but it's such a big difference.
my only complaint of the film is switching Leah's interest to Simon , child hood friends to lovers is an awful trope and the fact she likes him totally destroys the friendship in the books which isn't seen in a lot of films and shows
I agree! I don’t like it in TV and movies when they make one friend in a lifelong friendship secretly in love with the other. There are completely platonic male/female friendships in real life and I wish it was shown more in film and T.V.
Totally. I wish that there could be more of a representation in teen movies where a boy and girl are simply best friends, with no hint of romance between them, just a strong friendship.
I wasn't a fan of Leah's character in the movie. She was quite selfish tbh. They also left out that she's a weeb. I also wasn't a fan of the fact that they chose a skinny actor for a plus size character
Maya Elliott I agree with your statement about Leah. While Abby was understandably mad that Simon wasn't honest with her about Martin blackmailing him and deliberately keeping her away from Nick, Leah just seemed petty, especially the way she easily abandoned one of her best friends, all because Simon didn't (and couldn't) love her back. She came across as more sympathetic in the book.
I agree with everything you guys said. They gave Leah essentially nothing to do besides being the friend secretly in love with the guy. They even took the part with her being in the band out of the movie which I thought was the coolest aspect of her character.
Another difference: Movie Simon was way more invested in bringing Martin and Abby together that he even manipulated Nick and Leah, making the fallout on the movie way worse than the books, that only Abby got a little mad (and quickly forgave him)
Yeah, I didn't like how manipulative Simon was in the movie to try to get Martin and Abby together. I get that he was blackmailed into it, but I wish it had been kept more low key like in the book, because it made Simon look pretty bad.
Love the book and the movie, but I wasn't a fan of the change they made for how Simon and Blue finally meet. The movie was a little too much Never Been Kissed (also a great movie), I didn't like how they turned it into this spectacle for all the kids at the school to see, I much preferred the private meeting they got to have, it was their own moment not meant for everyone else. Also their first kiss, I liked that in the book it belonged to them, it wasn't for anyone else.
I completely agree! I didn't like it either how basically the whole school was there when Simon met Blue. And the kiss was also a bit rushed in my opinion, it should've been a private moment for the two of them
julian villegas I'm not saying it was bad, I just preferred the book and to me personally it was a contradiction to him complaining about how gay people are the only ones that have to "come out", it really shouldn't be that big a deal.
I feel a major difference is the fact that the person who first signs the emails with "Love," is switched in the movie and the book. To me, this is significant, especially for the ending.
Literally things that got me to cry in this movie were as follows 1) The exhale scene 2) How relatable it is 3) the fact that at the start he picks up 4 iced coffees.....then when everything’s gone to shit he only picks up 1 iced coffee.....and then when he’s got his man he picks up five agghhhhh it was so cute
Asterismos I know! It annoyed me so much, there's an entire paragraph in the book where Simon talks about how he's glad that blue is introverted like him and it's important to the story and then they totally changed it! Sorry for ranting, I needed to get that off my chest
Yeah, I liked movie Blue, but book Blue was just the cutest ray of sunshine and perfect for Simon in every way and also a very relatable character for me.
uh oh :( i cant go to see the movie bc it isnt gonna show in my homophobic country but heck my expectations for movie blue suddenly crumbles.. i still love to imagine that cute bram greenfeld who was played by keiynan as the blue in the book. he's HELLA cute. ugh sorry im rambling HAHA
as someone who saw the movie first and then read the book, i definitely prefer the book. don’t get me wrong, i still really liked the movie, but the book was way more focused on simon & bram’s relationship, and it felt like when you read the first email shown in the book they’d already been talking for a while. you could really see them falling in love with each other. i feel like in the movie they sent like three emails and simon was already going crazy over him. in the book you can see the progression more clearly, and the book actually continued after they first meet at the carnival. i can respect them as different pieces, but i can tell i would’ve been so disappointed in the movie if i’d read the book first.
helmi That's my main criticism of the movie, which I did like, as well. They spent too much time on the blackmail and Martin (who was really annoying, somehow I found him more tolerable in the book) and too little on the email exchanges between Simon and Blue. It's unfortunate, because the crux of the story is really how they fall in love through the emails.
Canal do Simon yeah, my friend would definitely agree with you on that. i haven’t seen the movie in a long time so i can’t really form an opinion but i probably would consider it to be pretty bad.
I really like the difference between the movie and the book. the Book felt more like a Love story where the movie felt like a Coming out/Coming of Age movie. Him coming out in the book felt like he was more afraid of losing Blue instead of changing his life, but in the Movie every moment was about his fear of being out. Either way it was nice having two different experiences with both stories.
Well - that and Leah is actually plus-sized. I mean for most people it's not a big difference but it definitely important to her character. If you like Simon, Leah's book Leah on the Offbeat comes out April 24th!
I missed the gay bar scene on the movie. Ultimately I absolutely adore both the book and the movie but I think I like the movie better just because there really is a low point in which everything seems to be breaking apart and ,besides the drama of it all, I think it’s beautiful and really inspiring to see simon overcome that. In the books he never really has any trouble with Nick and the Abbey situation it’s not really that big. But both stories have really inspired me and I just love it
the gay bar scene was really awesome in the way that Nick and Abby expressed their support for Simon. It was funny and also a little heartwarming for their friendship
the gay bar was filmed for the movie but cut in the end as the director felt the scene could feel a tad out of place in relation to how the movie was made. since the movie took a different turn he said he felt the gay bar scene was in some way out of place. but the scene was indeed filmed. just cut from the theatrical release.
lyanne OMG!! I’m so hoping they release every deleted scene they might have because I just can’t get enough of this movie. But I think it’s true this particular scene wouldn’t fit in the movie, because if you think about it, where would they have put it? Simon gets out, then he avoids his friends, and then they are already mad at him and don’t make peace til just about the time to meet Blue. Still, I’ve seen the behind the scenes videos here in youtube and there seems to be a couple of scenes that didn’t make it to the final cut and that I would like to see
THE GAY BAR SCENE!!!! THE FACT THAT BRAM DELETED THE BLUE EMAIL ACCOUNT UNLIKE IN THE BOOK WHERE THEY TALK IT OUT!!!! UGH THIS MOVIE AND BOOK MADE ME CRY! I can't, my gay heart...
the gay bar scene was actually filmed just cut from the theatrical release as the director felt that it could feel out of place in relation to how they were portraying the movie.
The movie had a much bigger falling out between Simon and his friends than the book, which in turn meant they had to cut the gay bar scene. There's just no place to fit it in: in the movie, Simon's friends are pissed at him after he's outed, so they wouldn't be taking him to a gay bar. By the time they reconcile, the movie is almost over.
Having read the book before seeing the movie I was in total shock when he first suspected Bram, I honestly thought the movie was over like 30 mins in and then he thinks it's someone else. I kinda hurts the reveal at the end.
claireice see I dont think he had a crush on Bram, he had mentioned in the book that he was cute and it came up a dew times but it was never a crush, he never even considered Blue to ve Bram because he never pictured it could be someone black, and then he feels like an idiot for not having thought of it.
I was honestly kind of annoyed with that bc he actually thought that bram liked Leah and NEVER expected him to be blue. I also hated that Cal Price was such a minor role bc Simon literally thought it was him for almost the entire book.
I have never read the book but I just watched the movie and I instantly knew Bram was blue the whole time i dont know how I guessed but it popped into my mind
Yeah I much prefer the way it was revealed in the book but maybe I would have had a different reaction had I not read the book before seeing the movie 🤷🏻♀️
A big one is that in the book, Simon never guessed that Blue was Bram. For most of the book, he thought it was Cal, until he realized it wasn't, then worried to might be Martin, then found out it wasn't, and didn't find out it was Bram until Bram revealed himself. In the movie, Simon first thought it was Bram, then Lyles, then Cal, then realized it was Bram all along once Bram revealed himself. They also left out Taylor Metternich, right?
Simon also has more teachers in the book as well. He takes French but he admits that he isn't good at it. Also, in the book, Simon is shorter and he has blond hair. Cal is more prominent and he comes out as bisexual. Taylor is the huge primadona for the play and the school play is Oliver! not Cabaret. Martin is a tall lanky kid who really has no friends and the movie give the impression that Martin believes he's part of Simon's world again when, in the book, Simon doesn't forgive Martin before the end.
I just loved all the extra Bram and Simon moments we got in the book, but the movie was incredible. The only addition I didn’t like was Leah having a crush on simon, it just made no sense!
Once you've read the book, it's always hard to be satisfied with the movie because you pictured things a certain way and some parts you especially liked in the book don't make it to the big screen. That said, I think Love, Simon is one of the better book-to-movie adaptations. I can think of some changes I wish they hadn't made, but it's pretty solid overall. And God knows it's important to finally, at long last, have a mainstream big studio rom-com that focuses on a gay teen and a same-sex love story.
It’s a really good movie that I love it is incredibly important as far as representation go. Still, it is one of the worst book to movie adaptations I’ve ever seen. Nothing about the stories are the same.
A friend of mine accidentally came out to me a few months ago, I remember she even apologized to me which made me actually kinda sad since she didn’t do anything wrong. She’s still not openly gay and actually hides books, posts and anything related to the lgbt community from her parents and people at school; I know she feels quite uncomfortable sometimes and it’s seriously so sad. Today was her birthday and also the premiere of the movie in my country so we went together to see it. She cried and felt really happy to finally see a story like this have such an impact. I think movies and series like this need to have more recognition and support since they’re great conversation starters. This is a reality and people need to start letting it sink in. And to anyone out there dealing with this kind of stuff I just want you to know that you’re not alone, the people who love you will understand and be there for you. You don’t need to apologize for being yourself and love is accepted. Being gay or straight, bisexual or asexual doesn’t make you any more or less of a person, we’re the same and if people can’t get that don’t let it affect you.
one of the biggest changes is Bram and Simons first kiss. in the movie they met & kissed on the ferris wheel but in the book they meet on a tilt-a-whirl and kissed a bit later in a publix parking lot (in the rain ;33). the book really made me cry. also lyle isnt even a character in the book. ANOTHER change is Cal's importance. in the book, Simon always thought that Blue was Cal. those are just a few of my favorite changes
What i find kind of funny is that Leah didnt like Nick. She liked Abby. In Albertali's book Leah on the Offbeat, it reveals shes bi and didnt like Nick being with Abby because of her feelings for her.
I loved in the movie how Simon reacted when he was exposed. I think his pain is way more real. In the book, he didn't seem as pained, and hurt, or bothered by it. In the movie, he was rightly very upset by it, and I liked that better
this is just one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. Accurate Representation matters, an accurate portrayal of coming out matters. I really think this movie changed my life despite me being out for a good 6 years now. Definitely in my heart
Same, I've been waiting for a long time for a movie to really wow me and have me so in love with it and THIS IS IT, SOOO in love SOOO obsessed and feel SOOOO represented
i really missed the storyline that leah and nora were in a band together and nora learned to play the guitar from nick and his everything for simon lol
I really didn't like that they left out the part of the Elliott t-shirt in the movie; seemed like a vital part to me in the book in which Blue really shows just how much he likes Simon. Additionally, I also really miss that in the book, Blue realised who Simon was without the proof on the Tumblr, and they actually stay in contact, whereas in the movie he sees it on Tumblr and deletes his email-address. Lastly, I kinda hate that they made the whole Blue and Simon finally meeting into such a public spectacle. Made the meeting and kiss seem super awkward and made me really uncomfortable. The book was so much better with them just meeting, just the two of them, and Blue even getting onto a ride that made him nauseated for Simon. I still like the movie, but I am slightly disappointed, because I just completely fell in love with the book. They could've done it more justice.
Gosh same bro. Its really annoying seeing people loving and defending this movie when I completly hate it. Book is sooooo perfect and the movie is disapointing
The movie still feels like it’s part of the book and that is very hard to achieve, so props to the film makers for that. I’m a huge fan of the book and the little changes in the movie didn’t even faze me, they kinda excited me. I got to see a whole new side to the story in a completely different way.
I will go to my grave saying this. Alice should have at least been mentioned! She is such an important character, as she was the whole reason for the best scene in the book! The ending of the book wouldn't of happened without Alice. Even if they didn't have her character appear, they should have at least mentioned her existence.
I actually watched the movie first, then realized it's based on a book, read the book (what a wonderful book!!!) And then watched the movie again. Going back to the movie I was sure they did mention her in the beginning, I remembered a scene when they talk to her via skype. I was so surprised to discover I was wrong!!!
This video brought back the wave of emotions and the feeling in my gut that o felt during the film and I don’t know how to describe it but no film has made me feel this way before. I hope to see more great films like this in the future
The whole bar in Atlanta chapter/SImons getting drunk and shouting at his dad was brutal in the book and a pretty significant change but I don't know if it would have worked with the films tone
The way Simon's dad made disparaging comments about gay guys without realizing his son is one was such a realistic and emotional plot point in the book, I wish we could've seen more of it in the movie (and the part where Simon lashes out in anger about it). There was that one scene where the dad says that a guy on TV is "fruity", but that's it.
I love how nobody who has read the book has read the sequel so nobody knows (including the person who made this video by the sounds of it 😂) that Leah and Abby actually end up together by the end of the 2nd book!
Currently reading the book and I like it so much! The movie doesn’t come out where I live until the 22nd of June (sadly) so I’m hoping to be done with it by then!
I really appreciate you guys talking about the situation with Leah and the way Simon comes out because in all honesty, the way the film did it made me dislike some of the characters whom I really didn’t want to dislike. It put Simon through unnecessary pain in the film which made me sad. We already see so many films and shows where the kid isn’t accepted by his family. The only one where it was clearly accepted by the parent was Glee. It would have been nice to see his friends be accepting of Simon instead of being upset.
I love how fantasy comes to show itself like it’s reality itself in a book. But, no matter how good and life-changing the climaxes are, it’s different. It’s different between you and your expectation
Things they left out. Cal is interested in Simon as cal is bi, the Elliott smith shirt, the title, they meet on a tilt-a-whirl, nicks white in the book, his email isn’t hour to hour note to note, in the book leah and simons sister are in the band, they missed the Oreo date, there is no spirit week, Martin gets rejected in private, and ALICE. And there is so much more
2 years late but I’ll shoot anyway. I love both book and the movie. It had different taste. What I just love about the book is that you can feel the connection of Blue and Simon. The movie just showed more about his self-conflict rather than connection he had with Blue. The Elliott Smith shirt was a HUGE opportunity missed. I think Blue giving that shirt to Simon was such a huge step, it showed how he was finally reaching out to Simon after few rejections. It showed he was ready to reveal who he was. The only interaction they had outside the emails. The meeting could have been more private. If I was Blue I would never have the guys to step out when the entire school is looking at us like we’re some show to entertain everyone. What I also love about the book is the built up anticipation and that Blue’s identity remained a mystery till the very end (unless you paid close attention to the details given, like how he had perfect english and Bram getting a high grade in english when Simon took his paper by mistake) In the movie, they could have emphasize more on the email exchange than Simon desperately looking who Blue was. I was also kind of disappointed how they didn’t even emphasize Garrett. He was like the typical jock who host house parties and had the first impression of a bully but for real, he was such a supportive person and didn’t even had an ounce of doubt when Simon came out. When Bram decided to abandoned Simon was also a turn off since Bram was like Simon’s paradise escape but even he turned him down. Regardless, I know the book is more flexible when it come to plot lines and the movie had to adjust in terms of financial aspects (casting. location sites and etc) also, not all audience are book readers so they had go make room for heavy drama that will entice those who haven’t read the book. The book gave me a lighthearted feel meanwhile the movie had the intensity of the characters and brought them to life. Also, well more screen time from Bram 🤧❤️
the ones that have been bugging me when i watch the movie is how Leah loves Simon, how Simon and Blue meet in front of a lot of people and not im private (and the kiss was way too rushed) , also Bram's personality. since i absolutely loves the "i'm quiet around you" i'm one of the cute guys that gets you tongue tied??" "you're _the_ cute guy" part in the novel and it won't work with movie Bram's personality :( other than these, it's a great movie.
I was so mad that my country rated this movie M18, but I finally got to watch it a couple days ago and I was so proud of Simon's coming out that I cried. It was so touching and amazing that he had the courage to come out(the ending where he met Blue felt a little rushed for my taste), and I hope there are more movies like this someday that are available to all audiences
Very touching, true. Hard at times to remember hard times but all in all it took a brave young man to come out. Terrifying. Many of my friends killed themselves, or are still killing themselves, drugs, liquor, etc. I admire Simon, few chose the hard path but the right path to loving yourselve to be able to love anybody else.........KUDOS!
I came across this clip when I just start reading the book. I am pretty sure Bieber, in the book, was also differnt. Or did I miss anything? But in total, I've watched this movie 4 times, once a day. I kinda absorbed much of it already. Great crew, great team!!!!
I saw the movie(twice)before I read the book. Enjoyed both very much! The monologue for Simon near the end before meeting Blue I wished was in the book.
I think one of the most significant changes from the books to the movies is what they're focused on. In the book, it's more focused on Simon falling in love with the Blue over the emails, but in the movie, it's more focused on the Simon trying to prevent Martin from outting him.
Caitriona Quigley I love that book!
Topaz_no_life Me too, I hope that they make a movie out of it someday.
THANK YOU
Caitriona Quigley That would make a wonderful movie.
L
And it’s a bigger deal because he normally can’t go on the tilt-a-whirl without puking but he did it because he needed to meet him
bucca2 right ! guess some changes were meant to enhance the romantic ending but i def did miss those details
exactly the in the movie where they meet on the Farris wheel is so public but in the book the carnival is closing much more private and i do think that is more realistic
Geek With Glasses my thoughts exactly
Also, the book lacks the whole “you get to exhale” conversation which I think it’s a nice addition. That is one of the most touching parts of the film
SLAGATHOR Apparently, the whole "exhale" conversation Simon has with his mother was actress Jennifer Garner's idea. You're right, it was definitely one of the most heartwarming scenes in the movie.❤️
I totally agree with you!
Joshua Ross-Smith - this is true, the movie goes a bit darker in tone for the outing and the fallout from it.
The book and movie are like siblings. Both great and amazing in their own rights, both great and amazing when together. Just great and amazing overall really.
Kieran-sw but like siblings, they’re different
10/10 film I think
I like that because i love both the movie and the book :)
Simon calling football practice "tryouts" and Bram smiling at him for it
The guy from the bar's "go be seventeen, cute Simon"
Cal telling Simon he's bi
*auditions not tryouts lmao
He called them auditions
How did bram knew... After the tryouts scene?
And they made a race in the school :')
what about they gay bar and leah and the little sister being in a band in then end! and how they changed the play to cabaret?
greg berlanti actually did film the gay bar scene but decided to cut it out sadly. theres a little clip of the BTS on instagram @bbynickr if you want to see.
There’s an article that explains why they took out the bar scene while interviewing the writers. I guess he was drunk and all at the Halloween party so that kinda made up for it
Those are all good changes that could have been in the video. I’m guessing the band thing was cut for time but the play change...not sure, probably something only the writers would know
they also didn't have alice!!
true true it was supposed to be oliver twist
I loved these two parts in the book. It’s a shame they decided to cut them out.
I think the biggest difference was the big blow up. Like Abby and Nick did not ditch him after he was outed instead they stuck by him and took him to a gay bar. Although I loved the book and the movie it was the one change I wasn't happy about. Just because they were better friends to Simon in the book then in the movie.
they actually cut that scene from the movie
The movie took things further in terms of Simon interfering to try to help Martin get Abby (in order to set up the fallout between Simon and his friends), which I think was a mistake. Simon giving Martin tips on how to dress, talk or act was one thing, but for him to outright lie to Nick that Abby has a college student boyfriend, and then to tell Leah to date Nick in order to keep him away from Abby, was manipulative and mean.
Yea that scene was actually deleted. You should be able to find it in the “extras” category and on RUclips
I haven't read the book but that makes me very happy bc I was upset with Simon's friends
Yea and I can understand Abby and nick being mad but why was Leah mad, Simon tried to hook her a nick up genuinely and she was all like u set me up to get my heart broken like WHAT!?!?!?!😂
I needed more Oreos, their lunch date, the Elliot Smith shirt, and the older sister
Yeah! Eliott Smith.
THE CHIPMUNK SIBLINGS
We’re reading this in class (don’t ask why) and I realised he actually has two sisters
Something that I missed in the movie was in the ending of the book. When Simon and Bram had been dating for a while then they go to the talent show and see Leah and Nora in an all girls band!
Em H and then the scene at his house it’s so precious I love the book
sameee
YESS
ikr those scenes were so beautiful😭
The whole band thing sets up the next book for Leah being Bi [its canon, Leah On The Off Beat if you havent read it, do it. Much gay]
They should’ve added his older sister in the movie, I really wanted that cute scene of bram and Simon and I really really wanted to hear him say “why would I want to watch other people kissing when I could be kissing you” ahhdjdjd that should have been in the movie. There’s a lot of scenes/lines I wanted in the movie but I understand why they couldn’t because they have like a time limit and all
Varonica Gomez !!!!!!
I know that line was freaking amazing! Literally paused reading and said that line ten times.
YES THE BOOK IS AWESOME AND THE MOVIE IS HORRIBLE
Canal do Simon I still like the movie as it’s own but I feel as though it strayed way to much from the book
Tbh I would probably rather them say it was inspired by the book and not exactly from it because the 2 were vary different imo
@@varonicag3420 i know right? The email address is not the same and even the name of the book!
The scene with his mother kills me. I cried when I saw it. It was such a good scene.
brithanoakleaf oh my god same! tbh towards the end of the movie i was a mess and it took me days to get over the film, it really hit home.
Me too 😢
I thought it was odd that she only kissed him on the head at the end of the scene, though. It was such an emotional moment, it seemed like a hug would be appropriate, similar to the scene with Simon and his dad.
same.
That was easily my favorite scene. One of the rare times I've cried during a movie
They even took the part with her being in the band out of the movie which I thought was the coolest aspect of her character.
tHEY LEFT OUT THAT OREO DATE IM
Chanel c:
I KNOW
THAT WAS THE BEST PART
Is the book good?
@@Ogdadwiththemilk yessss it's amazing
Cute Bram with the soft eyes and soccer calves.
the cutest boy ever
His cute soccer calves are everything💕💞💕💓
Cute and grammatical. :-)
Quoting Simon, My brown eyed, grammar nerd, soccer star boyfriend
Cute knobby hands too
Also in the film Nora is about 11 but in the book she's a freshman and they go to the same school
She was 13 in Middle going in to High School in the book
no she was a freshman lol. she was in the high school talent show and it did mention that she was a freshman a few times
That was my least favorite change from the book to the movie. It makes Leah telling Simon about the Martin outing Simon so much more loving
I know! I liked Nora being a bit older. Like I'm all for little sisters, but I just had a much more mature image of Nora.
Kristin Greenfield Well Creeksecrets was the whole town’s anonymous posting area, right? That’s what I thought but I might be wrong
And the kiss was also a bit rushed in my opinion, it should've been a private moment for the two of them
Kealley Mayhew me too! It also pissed me off a bit about how Leah loved Simon instead of Nick. I just thought that was weird and very stereotypical.
Kealley Mayhew I kinda liked how they did it in front of everyone, basically showing who they are and that they're proud to be it
julian villegas I'm not saying it was bad, I just preferred the book and to me personally it was a contradiction to him complaining about how gay people are the only ones that have to "come out", it really shouldn't be that big a deal.
Agree agree u read my mind!!! Also don’t like how turn Martin Addison anyways ...
I feel a major difference is the fact that the person who first signs the emails with "Love," is switched in the movie and the book. To me, this is significant, especially for the ending.
Chris Hart yeah I agree I think the small things really change the story (like his email although that’s actually a pretty big deal)
Literally things that got me to cry in this movie were as follows
1) The exhale scene
2) How relatable it is
3) the fact that at the start he picks up 4 iced coffees.....then when everything’s gone to shit he only picks up 1 iced coffee.....and then when he’s got his man he picks up five agghhhhh it was so cute
Oliver Mackenzie yes I thought that single iced coffee summed up Simon’s isolation from his friends perfectly.
3) true dat
1) Blue's entire personality.
THANK YOU
accurate
as someone who saw the movie first and then read the book, i definitely prefer the book. don’t get me wrong, i still really liked the movie, but the book was way more focused on simon & bram’s relationship, and it felt like when you read the first email shown in the book they’d already been talking for a while. you could really see them falling in love with each other. i feel like in the movie they sent like three emails and simon was already going crazy over him. in the book you can see the progression more clearly, and the book actually continued after they first meet at the carnival. i can respect them as different pieces, but i can tell i would’ve been so disappointed in the movie if i’d read the book first.
helmi That's my main criticism of the movie, which I did like, as well. They spent too much time on the blackmail and Martin (who was really annoying, somehow I found him more tolerable in the book) and too little on the email exchanges between Simon and Blue. It's unfortunate, because the crux of the story is really how they fall in love through the emails.
TRUEEE
Yeah same. I watched the movie first but the book is actually way better. I dont know, but now the movie is really bad for me
Canal do Simon yeah, my friend would definitely agree with you on that. i haven’t seen the movie in a long time so i can’t really form an opinion but i probably would consider it to be pretty bad.
YES THANK YOU
I really like the difference between the movie and the book. the Book felt more like a Love story where the movie felt like a Coming out/Coming of Age movie. Him coming out in the book felt like he was more afraid of losing Blue instead of changing his life, but in the Movie every moment was about his fear of being out.
Either way it was nice having two different experiences with both stories.
That's actually a really good way to describe the difference.
Well - that and Leah is actually plus-sized. I mean for most people it's not a big difference but it definitely important to her character. If you like Simon, Leah's book Leah on the Offbeat comes out April 24th!
I agree! It was one of the major let downs of the film even though I still loved it!
If any of you have read Leah on the Offbeat, how is it?
Precious Bradford Thanks.

REALLYYYY
Still, I’ve seen the behind the scenes videos here in youtube and there seems to be a couple of scenes that didn’t make it to the final cut and that I would like to see
It’s been confirmed that the gay bar scene will be in the deleted scenes/directors cut editions of the movie when it arrives on DVD
I hope that the gay bar scene is included in the dvd. I just pre-ordered Love, Simon on Amazon. The movie is due for release on sale in June.
**OUR** gay heart*s
TheFamousRouse yeah I think it really made the reveal seem very anticlimactic since Simon already thought it was him in the movie
Yeah I much prefer the way it was revealed in the book but maybe I would have had a different reaction had I not read the book before seeing the movie 🤷🏻♀️
I really missed their “first date” scene and all the cutesy stuff that happened after Simon realised it was Bram
I’ve read the book twice and seen the movie 7 times...both are fantastic
“Did you date me because I look like a guy”
“No...I broke up with you because you don’t look like a guy”
That scene killed me😂
I missed the gay bar scene that was in the book :/ hahaha
Matt Leicht that was an amazing scene
I loved that scene the best.
GoYoshi18 A totally perfect gay bar scene.
It's sadly a deleted scene
ahh that is what was missing, couldnt figure out what it was that was missing
I just loved all the extra Bram and Simon moments we got in the book, but the movie was incredible. The only addition I didn’t like was Leah having a crush on simon, it just made no sense!
Yo Whaddup They probably just wanted more drama, so that's why they went with the crush storyline. I agree that it didn't make a whole lot of sense.
The fact that they didn’t have Alice really bothered me. Like why didn’t they add her to the story? How hard could it be?
Same
I really wish they had the bed scene after he came out to his family
I know as soon as I saw the email, I saw the real email on the wall.
Yeeeeeessssss
The gay bar scene is a pretty integral scene that is cut as well.
Leah's personality was changed so much in the movie.
is nobody gonna talk about the oreo thing
I wish they had the first date scene where they eat oreos, it's the cutest scene ever ... but I really enjoyed the movie
What i find kind of funny is that Leah didnt like Nick. She liked Abby. In Albertali's book Leah on the Offbeat, it reveals shes bi and didnt like Nick being with Abby because of her feelings for her.
When the dad said let’s sign up for Grindr together I busted out laughing 😂😂
i missed that end scene where simon's older sister covers for simon and bram so they can go home and "study"
”You don’t know what Grindr is, do you?”
”It’s facebook for gay people.”
the problem with him being a senior is it means we can never have a leah on the offbeat movie
This movie and book will forever reign in the brightest cliffs of my mind and heart. *stops tears from falling again*
I think the change in the costumes for the Halloween party was to show a connection between Simon and Leah so the audience knows that Leah likes simon
Slightly Mysterious That's a neat theory! I never would have thought of it that way! 😄😀
Nah I didnt like it
This is my favourite film in the whole world. ❤️🏳️🌈❤️
Same! Honestly, this film is now my favorite movie.
Same, I've been waiting for a long time for a movie to really wow me and have me so in love with it and THIS IS IT, SOOO in love SOOO obsessed and feel SOOOO represented
Same. It's my favourite book too
They’re basically two whole ass different stories but I love them both
After years of tragedy LGBT movies FINALLY we are getting the happy ending story THANK YOU SIMON.
I really missed the whole tshirt part in the movie. I feel like it was a serious 'key-thing' in the book.
Usually when they make a book into a movie, it's lame, but they did a great job with Love Simon.
i really missed the storyline that leah and nora were in a band together and nora learned to play the guitar from nick and his everything for simon lol
I’ve read the book twice
Same
Same
"leah has resentment towards to abby because she is dating nick" - or do you mean IS TOTALLY IN LOVE WITH ABBY BUT IS TOTALLY REPRESSING IT?
He did wear glasses in the film in one scene.
Good list! I think the new characters added was another huge change (the vice principal, ethan, etc) but other than that I agree!
I haven’t seen the movie but I loved the book! My favorite scene was the “hot simon with eyeliner”
I love how it showed the emotional side of coming out so they story wasn't just gay, gay, gay. It showed how it takes a toll on you
Yeah I didnt like it. The movie was supposed to be GAYER. this isnt supposed to be a straight movie with a gay kiss at the and. this is a GAY book
OMG I can't believe Leah actually went from Tohru from Fruits Basket I love her!! I've literally been watching the reboot since it came out. lol.
Leah had a relationship with Abby in the second book, and she never actually had feelings for Nick.
I would of loved to see the book ending in the movie, when they skipped school in the end during lunch.
Ugh, such goals, i wish it had stayed ❤❤
The litte picnic Simon and Blue had together...
That was so cute in the book.
The movie and the book are both AWESOME though!
Also, well more screen time from Bram 🤧❤️
the ones that have been bugging me when i watch the movie is how Leah loves Simon, how Simon and Blue meet in front of a lot of people and not im private (and the kiss was way too rushed) , also Bram's personality. since i absolutely loves the "i'm quiet around you" i'm one of the cute guys that gets you tongue tied??" "you're _the_ cute guy" part in the novel and it won't work with movie Bram's personality :(
other than these, it's a great movie.
By making him a senior they totally missed the opportunity to make a leah on the off beat movie.
I literally read the entire audiobook and watched the movie twice JUST today. SO GOOD!
This is literally my favorite movie, ever. I didn't read the book, so I found this very interesting.
I honestly want a movie on brams POV so we could see what he thinks and stuff
Literally cried through half of the film.
i seen Love Si 13 times but I only did not cry on the last showing Cheers Everyone should see Love Simon!
We need a Love Simon TV show,
Because my heart is aching for more.
Where's Albert? Why does Leah have two parents?
Also, we NEED a Leah on the Offbeat sequel or even an Upside of Unrequited spin-off
The dementor costume was so fun I hate it when they change everything in the movies 🙄
There are so many differences but both the book and the movie are still brilliant
how simon meets bram in the book is so more romantic and powerful. they don't have alone time in the book, which is very much needed.
What about my favorite scene? Where Bram and Simon go skip lunch and get a box of oreos and a carton of milk? ;-; I loved that scene.
I love the movie. But Honestly... Love Simon is not enough in just 2 hours.... Make it a series!!!!! Huhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhhuhuhuhu😥😥😥😥😥😥
I think one of the most significant changes from the books to the movies is what they're focused on. In the book, it's more focused on Simon falling in love with the Blue over the emails, but in the movie, it's more focused on the Simon trying to prevent Martin from outting him.
I have to write an essay on the differences of a book that was made into a movie. Dint wanna find the differences. SO THANK YOU SO MUCH
