  • Hi there, I'm Eileen. Ever since learning about minimalism, I love the idea of curating everything in life, but it doesn't mean I want to have a capsule wardrobe. In this video, I talked about why a super tiny closet is not always the answer (even for minimalists) xx

I had a "capsule wardrobe" when my husband and I traveled for two continuous years: four tops, four skirts, four pairs of shoes, one jacket, one winter scarf, one purse. It worked well, but at the end of it, I was bored with my clothes. When we settled down, my capsule expanded: 10 tops, 10 skirts, 12 pairs of shoes, two jackets, five purses. It was very doable. Now, I'm in a country with defined seasons, and my "capsule" has evolved into summer, winter, and in-between seasons. Life (and wardrobe) is in constant evolution, even when you get the perfect pieces.

Agree 100% with what you've said in this video. I don't have a capsule wardrobe, and don't think I ever would. I have over the past year been eliminating a certain percentage of my clothing to try and get my wardrobe to a much more manageable size. After I'm satisfied with where it's at, I will be using the "if one comes in, one must go out" rule. It will make me think more about buying something down the road. By the way, you look great!

"Nine is not enough and one is too many".....I can so relate. I too, have zero high heels, thanks to a sprained ankle that took almost three years to heal (it will never be the same). Capsule wardrobes work for uniforms only. Otherwise, wardrobes are as individual as we are.

The time I tried to convince myself I needed a capsule wardrobe was the time I spent so much money and “research” trying to find the perfect pieces. It was getting out of hand. Now, like you, I’ve accepted that I need certain pieces for certain types of events and as long as I’m not hoarding, it’s fine. It might work for some people, but it didn’t for me.

I'm on my journey to minimize my closet, I did a 6 month no buy in 2021 and decluttered a lot. Now I shop less and more mindfully, but I'll never be a minimalist, as style and fashion is my passion😅 Capsule wardrobe feels very restrictive to me, I only build a small capsule for vacation.

What a great video (no surprise)! 👏You have a balanced, cogent, and rational approach to building and maintaining a wardrobe. While minimalism may be a helpful, doable path for many, your perspective (perhaps using minimalism as a springboard) is truly "mindful," in that it takes into account the flexibility we need in "real life", where special or unexpected events pop up at any moment, so, in a sense, you inspire us to be prepared (and for many, "what to wear" is a steal source of frustration). Curating a wardrobe can be yet another source of peace and harmony. Thanks for all you do❣

i completely agree, Eileen! Our preferences change and lifestyles may change over time so I've learned to not be so obsessed with the numbers, but be realistic about how often I will need/use something instead. I also adhere (mostly) to a one in and one out rule so that I don't start accumulating excess.

speaking of not numbers: my minimalist style accessory credo is: if it can't be seen frm across the street don't bother putting it on. yes I love Big chunky earings, necklaces etc. I do own delicate Items but I wear many at once & treat them as a single article. Such as my 5 ear piercing forming a single story (think like eye makeup) or I will stack bracelets to form a story. so for me I wear only earings and a fit bit with a black tank & jeans but those earings are over 2oz of silver. Great video

I couldn't limit myself to a capsule. I am a maximalist with my clothes and I love it. Something for every mood and occasion. However there is a coherence in my wardrobe. Many things go together and let me create almost infinite outfit combos. I could never be a minimalist.

Then I stoped myself thinking, oh wait, I ran hot all the time, I live in Southern California and my skin reacts to it. Dah!!

I don’t have a capsule wardrobe per se, but I do like using the concept of having basics form the backbone of my wardrobe with one or two accent colors. It really solves my previous dilemma of,not having things to wear as my clothes didn’t match one another easily. But the whole idea is more intentional dressing and spending, than anything else for me.

I completely agree! Over the past several years, I’ve downsized my wardrobe (clothing, shoes, & bags) to a total of 68 high-quality items. (I am not focused on numbers, I only know because I track my items in the Stylebook app.) I’ve thought about further streamlining this into seasonal capsules but I like to have full access to my wardrobe when I’m deciding what to wear. Also some people who have capsule wardrobes of 30-40 items will have hundreds more items in storage that they choose from when planning the capsules. So capsule wardrobes don’t necessarily equate to mindful wardrobes. I think your wardrobe is amazing. 🥰

When i was younger, I wpuld buy lots of costume jewelry from high street brands. Now with time and age (and money), I have only invested in solid gold, silver and diamonds. Over the years i have built up a great collection that is worn regularly, and shall be passed on to my kids still retaining their monetary value. Just like I’ve inherited from my grandma, mom etc. I think good jewelry can really elevate a simple look.

For me the word is curated and not minimalist, and is mainly about to stop buying aimless, I have learned to buy intentionally, “this piece goes with that one and that other one, etc.” and not buying bc is so gorgeous and than when at home I realize it doesn’t fit well with what I already have, being in style or color. Another rule is going through my pieces in the wardrobe often to not forget pieces and buy duplicates. Besides that I feel with a capsule wardrobe you risk not having your clothes washed and ironed for the day you’re in need of them and don’t have a replacement. For me this is too much, extremism is a no no for me. Another rule for me that I learn from hard experience is to have something to every occasion adequate to my lifestyle and that requires planning in advancing and investing in classics, not trendy.
The other thing I had to conquer, was to not want to part with things, some expensive, that for long I can’t wear anymore bc they simply don’t fit anymore. Girl, you were 20 y.o when you bought that, it’s as already passed several decades, let it go!!!
