I think that looking healthy and well groomed, friendly and confident is better than trying to look expensive. The first speaks of a good life, the second denotes looking for approval.

Great video. I have been around affluent people my whole life and have picked up a few pointers. The women invest in themselves. They do try to eat healthy food, they do get exercise, they do get dental work done, and they do go to the doctor’s.
Even though they are always plagued by wondering if people like them for themselves or their money, they invest time and effort in friendships.
If you want to pass for affluent, work on your English, read good books (or short stories and poetry), and have an interest that you enjoy. I also fully recommend doing some kind of volunteer work. This can be only an hour or two a month, but it will give you depth.
With this foundation and videos such as Couleurful Noir’s, you will always come off as a person of distinction.

A similar thing happened to me, too. I dressed very nicely at work, but what my coworkers didn't know was that I bought many of my items at a local consignment shop. I did get the feeling that my boss felt I didn't need a raise because of my appearance. Can't prove it, though, right?

We hired a paralegal whose husband is rich and she wears to work LV, Gucci etc bags. It feels indeed strange, like two worlds clashing (serious, hard working and frivolous).

I like simple yet beautifully made items that will last me several years with proper maintenance. It just so happens to mean that the things I buy are a bit more expensive than what the average person might reasonably spend on a single garment or accessory. I also don't like to wear obvious logos (regardless of price point) because I am a person, not a billboard. Luckily, I don't feel like I have to "signal" or "impress" anyone in my profession, especially with the things I've decided to put on my body. To me, quiet luxury should be something that you can enjoy relatively privately without other people's scrutiny or judgement. Perhaps instead of trying to "look expensive" per se, we should be working towards "developing good taste" and a true sense of personal style whilst living according to our means and lifestyle.

Very thoughtful video, Elaine! When the whole "quiet luxury" vibe started, I sighed and rolled my eyes. Really? And what will we do with the clothes that fit this aesthetic when it's time for the next trend?
I prefer well-made clothes that fit my budget and lifestyle without worrying that they fit a trend. Many of my clothes are from consignment and resale shops - they have a lot of life left in them and are reasonably priced, so I look nice without sacrificing cost.

I believe it is not about looking expensive, but rather that you cared enough to look well-groomed and put together with a smart looking outfit. If one has the budget to invest in designer pieces then that is o.k. We should not try to impress people with high-priced items. It is wise to exude confidence no matter what the cost of your items were. There are so many people in debt because they want to "Keep up with the Jones's." Thanks for your words of wisdom Eileen.

This is such a good topic. I have family members who I would consider are doing well. They wear basic general clothes. I do think when you have a little more money to spend if you like something you like something regardless of where it comes from or how expensive it is. My brothers has friends with extreme well, like own their own private island. The only bag the lady has is one from the gap. I would like to think I am doing good for myself as well. Most days I dress pretty casual. I only spend a little more time getting ready if I have to go somewhere like the doctor's or interview. Plus, just because someone has money doesn't mean they even care about luxury pieces. For me, I spend my money towards education. I like learning new things. The money I spent towards my education I could have a closet full of birkins.

No one came to serve me (which didn't bother me seeing I'm not into cars anyway). But the funny thing is, not long later I went with a friend driving a BMW i8. This time the service was top-notched. I always smiled at these “look expensive”. When you buy low quality fast fashion you can’t look expensive….
It’s better to look normal but classy and well dressed.
I think it’s for a certain young public who confuses classy and spending a lot of money on clothes. Thus the aim would be to look like you spent a lot of money without spending it (because you don’t have it). It preys on the insecurity of people.
Very glad that you talk about it in fact 👏👏👏👏

  • @AnythingBtOrdinary91

There's a difference between looking "expensive" (aka trying too hard) and learning to have good taste (ie gravitating towards timeless pieces vs always following trends). Also head to toe grooming is always a good foundation (this should include nails and behind/in the ears, and haircut/facial hair touch ups).

Personally, I have zero desire to look wealthy. I have a bag now that was only 300 retail and won’t wear it because I don’t want anyone to know I’d spend that much on a bag. So, no way I’d buy a luxury bag! Lol!
I don’t want to look expensive because I don’t want to be associated with the “wealthy class”.
I definitely wouldn’t want to look like a kardashian, or any celebrity.
My goals are to be healthy and to be kind to all people. I take care of myself and dress casually.

I love to look fit, happy and pretty. I don’t desire to look expensive.
The biggest cons of it is that It is not good for bonding with frugal but wealthy people. Looking expensive would likely attract HENRY (high earning not rich yet) to be your friends and worse still you will end up spending more hanging out with them.
I enjoy my quiet lifestyle, going to library, going to cafe to have a cup of coffee, enjoying leisure. Taking a Birkin to library looks out of place. I have never seen one in public library, not even bookstores.
When I see someone holding a Birkin or Kelly, I do admire its beauty and generously and genuinely compliment the owners on it.

I also mix high street and name brands. It has to make financial sense. Buying a 300$ Tshirt simply does not make sense to me. But buying a 1000$ wool coat absolutely does, because it will last me years and I can probably sell it on down the line with little loss considering cost per wear I got out of it already. Buying good quality shoes that can be resoled also makes sense. That doesn't mean I don't love a simple Adidas or Nike sneaker. I really dislike this "look rich on a budget" thing. It always looks so try hard. Like cosplaying as an heiress. It's ridiculous. Just focus on quality rather than quantity and slowly build a cohesive high quality non logo wardrobe and your outfits will automatically have a certain vibe to it.

    • @LotusesGalaxyOcean
      @LotusesGalaxyOcean 11 месяцев назад +5

Absolutely. But, I find that people are not very well educated on what quality is. Grades of silk? Grades of cashmere? Supima and pima cotton? And on and on. So I think many people are not even aware of what they should be looking for and what a reasonable price for it would be. A cashmere coat is going to be expensive, but rightfully so. I have found that being like this, I always get treated very well and kindly as opposed to when I don't. Wearing a designer item as well, only compounds that for me..but also attracted unwanted attention (from thieves and shady people).

I grew up in one of the wealthier towns in the country, if not the wealthiest. This is clearly a generalization, but here it goes- wealthy people look nice, meaning they are clean, well-groomed, and dressed in unassuming attire that suits them. Unless there is an occasion that necessitates differently, this is casual dress, or classic casual. (think Lacoste, brooks brothers, even Target). They do not wear flashy designer labels, dressed in the latest trends. Do they buy higher quality items, sure, but not necessarily from-called "luxury" brands. Their money goes elsewhere because they dont need it to prove anything.

No, it’s not important in the least to look expensive, but it important is to look well-dressed and well-groomed. I don’t care in the least about looking expensive, but I want the best quality for my wardrobe.

I personally wish, sometimes, there were rules and laws about how to avoid dressing, too many people look like they fell out of bed, dress in such way in which one should plant potatos, maximum. I like the idea of people trying to look expensive, at least they are trying something, means there is chance they will end up looking elegantly and decent, if they try hard enough. T-shirts is not even clothing, its undergarment. Majority of people dress horribly, basically are dressed with no idea, no style, no elegance, so whatever trend is waking up at least a tiny little bit of desire to look more towards polished and well styled looks when picking outfits for the day is good, don't forget majority doesn't care about anything- no culture of understanding what is for home, what is for city life, what is for jumping in a forrest when camping, what is for walking down the street. So more trends like this, its better than pj styles on the streets!

Wearing designer brands or high end fashion at work doesn’t work at all. I believe in being relatable weighs heavier than looking expensive and people feel like you can be unapproachable.

Whenever I try to mix a luxury bag with some contemporary brands I feel like it downgrades the bag and make it look like a counterfeit. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I really feel that your entire outfit as well as make up and hair must be of decent quality so that you look “genuine”. If I see a woman carrying a chanel bag but wearing old dirty adidas sneakers and having messy hair I immediately think the bag is a counterfeit or that she has spent all her money on this one beloved bag and now is broke.

    • @EvangelineNeo
      @EvangelineNeo 11 месяцев назад +2

I agree, so many super fakes now. If I see an expensive bag, I would think it may be a fake if the lady is not well dressed or paired with another luxury accessory

Personally I like the idea of premium quality handbags. However, since following a man who breaks down the cost and manufacturing I have a price point limit. Unless it is a large item even using the best materials and made by hand it usually should only come out to a few hundred dollars. So unless it is a large bag or luggage it should stay well under $1000. I don’t want to buy anything for branding, but quality and design. And I think that buying items in this way means I won’t feel the need to unnecessarily fluff up outfits. This is just my approach to this because the idea of spending thousands on a small bag just for the reputation make me break out in hives.

Thank you so much for sharing! I must say I used to have that worry too-- feeling like I wasn't dressed up enough for the designer bag or jewelry, but something kind of changed along the way, and now I don't put much emphasis on 'looking worthy'. I personally don't mind mixing designers with high street as long as I feel comfortable with the outfit xx

Or when someone dresses up like a kardashian…that downgrades their handbag as well imo.

No matter how well dressed you are and no matter how well groomed and well mannered you if you don’t have self respect and respect for others you will never have “it”. And that means dressing well and properly. You don’t need to drip diamonds, but pajamas and trainers everywhere and leisure wear are a full no.

Not so much 'expensive' but more well groomed and not like a crazy homeless person. You look upscale and you will be treated upscale. Thats just unconscious reaction in many areas. You want to present yourself well so that others treat you as you wish to be treated. Also looking expensive doesn't equal actually spending alot. The counterfeit market is thriving because some people simply don't want to pay stupid money for not very much.

Honestly, I think most of the accurate part of “look expensive” is just health and beauty related. Put a stunning person with gorgeous hair, skin and bright smile who is fit as anything in a tee and jeans…. They still look like a knockout. Fashion also helps, but you can see the limits of how far it goes with celebrities who don’t look after their health.

*YES, Looking Expensive IS Important* to MANY people. This and Wanting what's Expensive is a game, and is one people who Purchase/Desire *"LUXURY"* items play to make themselves feel good (I've done this myself). A Birkins is NOT Worth the price that's asked or is paid...PERIOD-T - *Stunning Bag* (would love to own one) *but NOT worth the price*. There are two $15,000 bags *you desire to own one* - Identical, except one is Plain Without name or mark, the other says Hermès - which would you buy?😁 Nothing is worth no more than a person is willing to spend for it. Just because a person can afford it doesn't mean it's worth it. Bottom line, we ALL desire to be/have something we are not/ don't AND the Luxury Market can be just as, if not More Deceitful than the Counterfeit Market.🧡🍂

I think the whole "looking expensive" is meant to make women feel they are not good enough. Why do we push such high expectations on women? We need to encourage each other to be our best selves, and be healthy and happy!!

Looking “expensive” is all fine if you actually have the finances to back it up. Sadly most people will get themselves into a huge amount of debt to achieve the look which is a sad state of society.

Personally, in order to look your best, I think we should try to achieve the following: 1) be in good physical shape 2) practice good hygiene and 3) the cherry on the cake is have a good haircut that suits you. That is it. If you can tick all those boxes you are good to go. No matter what you wear you are going to look wonderful. In fact if you are at your physical best and you've got a good eye for what styles and colours work for you, you can make cheap clothing/handbags look more expensive than they are.
