As someone who picked up boxing as a new hobby a year and a half ago because of how cool fighting games made it look, Ed is the character i was most excited for in season 1. And he's even more awesome than I imagined he would be.
This video single-handedly made me pick up the game again to give Ed another go and I had a blast! He's not a mindless rushdown character, he's patient and methodic. Actually won a few matches! Can't wait to lab it our and learn his ins and outs more thoroughly.
what rushdown characters are mindless? ik people love to talk shit about rushdown characters but i honestly think they all require a lot of skill and thought unlike grapplers who can just steamroll any form of defense and deal a shitton of damage sure ken may look mindless but a lot of thoughts do actually go through a ken players mind at a higher level and as a ken main im obviously gonna be biased but i do actually use my moves wisely cause if i dont im gonna pay the price and id say the same for all rushdown characters in street fighter luke included
That Luke Parallel was lowkey making me wonder when he came out, I loved him in 5 and I’m grateful him and Luke are still doing good now. Luke and Ed were my favourite dudes from V
1:15 it’s not UFC that’s the company it’s MMA that’s the sport and I think you really should have mentioned how Ed’s level 3 as well as his win pose reference a double end bag one of they most essential pieces of boxing equipment that teaches you rhythm, accuracy and distance all at the same time and is a really nice reference to boxers and boxing fans. But I can still recognize and appreciate all the effort that went into this video and highlighting all the boxing elements incorporated into Ed for SF6 any fan of the sweet science can see them and appreciate them.
One detail I really like about Ed is the fact he plays incredibly well with Drive Guage economy: Kill Rush lets him keep up the pressure after knockdowns without needing to use Drive Rush, and by holding Psycho Flicker he can bait Drive Parry and drain the opponent's Drive Guage. I love this not just because it makes for genuinely engaging gameplay, but also because I always interpreted the Drive Guage as a representation of a fighter's stamina; an a boxer having excellent cardio is extremely appropriate, contrasting someone like Zangief who has to tire himself a lot to get his big body moving.

The version of SF2 shown here is most likely a console port for either PS3 or Xbox 360, as I recall those ports having an option or two for pixel smearing filters. Pause the video and you can see how blurry and out of focus it makes the image, especially on Honda's face and the background of the bathhouse. Also note that this is immediately followed by a clip of Dudley, showing the impeccably beautiful spritework of the SF3 series.
Hey I’ve been a day one Ed lover in 5. When he was announced for 6 I was excited to play him. I got immediately discouraged by how much more dense he was and I dropped him and actually deleted the game because he was the one I wanted to main. This video made me redownload and practice him. I’m not perfect with him but the connections to real boxers in this video made me try and now item part of my strategy. Thanks for this video you saved my street fighter 6 journey
I always had a soft spot for ed cus (correct me if im wrong) i think balrog's arcade ending in sf4 was him saving ed, and that was my first sf game. So i saw him as the natural next gen boxer or even a main character compared to dudley, seems like an unpopular opinion tho :/ Awesome video btw! Would love to see more!
while id say his burnt out animations definitely resembles peekabo, which makes sense because his mentor was balrog, the way he moves his whole body instead of slipping punches resembles what you do to adjust in high guard position. His hands also seem to be up to his forehead and above, i also notice his elbows rise up slightly. but i love the analysis you gave for his fighting style
I hope Capcom someday will add character based on UFC or ONE Championship fighter. UFC has very interesting personas like Robert Whittaker from Australia, Max Holloway from Hawaii (I know Hawaii are in US but Max is embracing his Hawaiiness), McGregor from Ireland, Jan Blachowicz from Poland, Francis Ngannou from Cameroon. All of this fighters are representing countries and cultures which never was shown in any SF. Maybe someday in SF8 😅

Pankration is sort of grandpa of MMA cause it had various techniques of wrestling, striking (boxing) and submissions emerged into one formula of fighting which later evolved into MMA when competetive fighting sport became popular so I think it would be legit to call Marisa MMA fighter but I think the modern pankration has more options than old pankration so I think it would still be pankration

The psycho break is not exactly inspired by the 1 2.Its actually a technique in which you parry or redirect your opponent's punch with a punch of your own then utilise the momentum to return with a cross or a hook or uppercut .This technique is used by a japanese boxer named Naoya Inoue you can check out this technique on The Mordern Martial Artist channel's video named Naoya Inoue drills to KO.Aside from that nice video.

I really like how Ed's style of Psycho Power is so different than the usual torrents of power from Bison or the almost mage like style of JP, instead of Psycho Power being the crux of his martial arts he instead uses it in synergy to his skills as a boxer compensating for the weaknesses of the style while still sticking to it in full by refusing to kick.

I found it so frustrating to play with until I looked at character select screen and said it was more of a zoner type, bit counterintuitive at first, I thought he was a rushdown fighter, fun character tho
He’s a mix of both, he has good zoning skills that put Dhalsim to shame and good combos with stand HP and MP and his maid zoning move pulls them in to fight up close and personal so he’s a mix of both.
He’s an anti hero since he isn’t hostile to any good guys in this game other than Guile but still he targets M. Bison’s remnants exclusively so I would use the argument that he is a good guy entirely because the fandom page says he’s chaotic good so I think he isn’t a bad guy or neutral.
Its funny how T8 Steve leaned more on more comical boxing moves while SF6 Ed becomes more grounded in actual real boxing moves. I especially love how Ed moves like current era boxers. Its more refined and methodical in doing combos rather than slugging
Honestly, I'm pretty sure Ed's flicker is more inspired by Hajime No Ippo, than by its HJN's real life inspiration for it. It wouldn't quite be the first time, either, as both of Dudley's Supers in SF4 are basically Ippo's Dempsey Roll and Date Eiji's Corkscrew.

Hey not to be that guy, but you got mixed on the balrog/Dudley comparison. Dudley is an in-boxer, witg his combo and mix-up game, and balrog focuses on spacing and safe pressure, like an out-boxer
i would say dudley has a mix of infighting and out boxing, he definitely starts in neutral like an outboxer, but once he gets in and gets the chance he’s an infighter mixing you up
I'd like to add that Thomas Hearns himself admitted that Muhammad Ali was a great inspiration for his fighting style. From what I hear, he sees Ali as his hero.
yeah i feel like most people didnt give capcom enough credit ed was awesome and is my favourite character so far of course akumas gonna end up being my favourite but ed is also really awesome in his own right and a character i actually wanna play now which i wouldnt have said about his sf5 version

I always thought Balrog was more of the slugger boxing type rather than in-fighter.
In-fighters refer to those who fight better up close which would definitely describe Mike Tyson/Balrog but he does have some slugger attributes

Hey not to be that guy, but you got mixed on the balrog/Dudley comparison. Dudley is an in-boxer, witg his combo and mix-up game, and balrog focuses on spacing and safe pressure, like an out-boxer
i think balrog is a slugger
i would say dudley has a mix of infighting and out boxing, he definitely starts in neutral like an outboxer, but once he gets in and gets the chance he’s an infighter mixing you up
